Sora stood up, Nyra jumping from her lap in rush towards the grass. "Nyra wait, lets plan this out." Sora looked at her battle eager Snivy with a smile. Were they really ready to face wild pokemon? They had not done much battling other than going against her friends. But for the most part her friends were interested in becoming co-ordinators, they wanted to stay within the city limits and maybe go up to Nimbasa city for the musicals. Nyra turned around to face her trainer. The two of them could do this, it was simply a matter of how. And her father was there if anything went wrong. Besides, what could possibly go wrong?

With her father watching to two approached the grass with careful consideration. They could hear the sounds of wild pokemon from within.

Teleportation was a curious thing. While it had the obvious benefit of transporting a being from one place to another in mere moments, it did come with a drawback-- if a person wasn't accustomed to being Teleported by their Pokemon, it could-- and often would-- cause them to suffer physical side effects. The most common seemed to be splitting headaches; upon first becoming acclimated with teleportation, Nina described the headaches similar to what she would expect it to feel like if her head was placed into a vice and the clamp tightened until her head seemed it would pop like a grape. Nausea and dizziness also went hand-in-hand with those headaches. Of course, Nina had long since been using hers and Sabrina's Pokemon as a means of instantaneous transportation, so she hadn't felt those sorts of side effects in quite a long time.

Until that moment, anyway.

Nina, Anna, and Mimien materialized outdoors, where rain was falling both steadily and heavily, and the light of day was nowhere to be seen due to the obstructing clouds and endemic tall trees. No sooner had they appeared did Nina find herself overwhelmed with a terrific headache, causing her to lose her balance and fall to her knees, clutching her quickly-pounding heart with her right hand. "Mimien... where...?" she slurred, though it hurt even to speak; she turned to look at her sister's Pokemon.
The mime returned the glance with an apologetic expression on his face, and he shook his head once or twice slowly. He vanished, leaving Nina and Anna in the rain.

It was then that Nina began sobbing; this caused the pain in her head to increase, and it didn't do much to alleviate her rising heart rate. "Sabrina, why did you... do this? Whitney... she could be hurt, and you're taking it upon yourself to... stop Raimundo and to save her?"
Anna nudged her Trainer. "Nina, now is not the time. I'm just as upset over this as you are, but right now there's nothing we can do about Sabrina or Whitney or Raimundo or that redheaded harlot. Right now, what we need to do is to get you inside and out of this rain. Can you stand? Here, let me help you."

Despite having collapsed only moments before, Nina was able to stand with Anna's aid; the Ghost Pokemon helped Nina up by use of her Psychic powers. Nina knew that had she attempted to stand of her own volition, she would merely collapse again; her legs felt as though they were made of pure rubber, and they would be completely useless. Beyond that, her body felt heavy, and the headache was causing her to lose her vision somewhat. The constant downpour of rain wasn't providing much for a clear visibility, either.

"...Where?" Nina mumbled. Her mouth felt numb, as if she had been injected with Novocain.

Anna floated beside her Trainer, looking around a little. "I don't know," she confessed. "I don't recognize our surroundings, nor do I sense any familiar presences. Our best bet is to locate the nearest Pokemon Center so that you can rest. Just, please, stay with me. Stay conscious, and just try to loosen up as much as you can. I'll use my powers to control you so that you can walk."
"Will it be painful?" the girl asked.
"It won't. Just relax, and I'll help you to walk. Trust me."
"I always... trust you, Anna."
The Misdreavus smiled. "Good girl. Now, come along, and let's find shelter."

Nina found herself drifting in and out of consciousness as she walked on autopilot, due to Anna's influence. She was replaying the recent events in her mind over and over again, everything from the beginning of that battle to Phoenix flying down from the sky and swooping Whitney up and taking her to parts unknown. Whether Sabrina defeated Raimundo or not didn't seem as though it would make a difference; after all, he would undoubtedly reunite with his partner one way or another.

A flood of more questions washed over her mind, none of which she had any answers to-- this was partially due to a plethora of factors that left those questions unanswerable at the moment. It also didn't help that her head throbbed in time with her heartbeat, the pain of which only seemed to continually grow stronger.

She was uncertain as to just how much time had passed when she heard Anna exclaim,
"Nina, this is it! There's the Pokemon Center, right up ahead!" The girl willed her eyes open, ignoring her persistent and crippling headache; near a small pond, she saw the familiarly-colored red and white building. Maybe it was her current state of semi-consciousness, but this building seemed somehow different from the ones she was accustomed to seeing. She didn't question it, however, and walked through the automatic doors and up to the front desk.

"Excuse me, Nurse!" Anna exclaimed. "My Trainer and I are... well, we're lost, and she is in desperate need of rest; I have had to exhaust a great deal of my power to bring her here. Please, do you have a bed available?"
Nurse Joy took but one brief look at Nina before nodding her head. "Of course, dear." She hurriedly walked to the other side of the desk, and lifted Nina's right arm and draped it over her shoulders. "Please, come with me. I shall see you to a bed immediately."
Relieved that Anna could rest, she released her psychic grip over Nina's body, allowing the kindly nurse to support the girl as she walked.

With an extraordinary amount of assistance from Nurse Joy, Nina found herself in the dormitory of the Pokemon Center; the nurse even aided her in changing out of her wet clothes and into pajamas. "Th... thank you so much," the girl said, her voice a mix of desperation and confusion.
Nurse Joy shook her head with a bit of a smile. "Think nothing of it, dear," she replied. "If you need anything during the night, please don't hesitate to call for me. Right now, however, it's time for you to rest. You look as though you've had a very trying day." With a soft smile, Joy helped her into bed before exiting the dormitory.

Anna rested nearby, fast asleep, on a bed adjacent to her Trainer's.

The girl looked to her faithful companion, and found a smile on her face. Thank you, she thought. I don't know what I would do without you, Anna.

As she closed her eyes to sleep, however, Nina found herself met with an unnerving feeling of balefulness.

"This is... not at all what I was expecting," Jasper murmured once he had gotten a good look around inside the gatehouse. He had entered, fully prepared to find the place empty, but the exact opposite was what he found. The gatehouse was full of people; kids, mostly, and the majority of them either around Jasper's age or younger. "Just what the heck is going on here?" he muttered, scratching the back of the head as a kid wearing a particularly prominent straw hat walked past, a rather large butterfly net strapped to his back. 'Oh right, it's Saturday morning,' the youth thought, finally putting two and two together. 'That means the Bug-Catching Contest is on today.'

Figuring he really didn't have anything to lose by entering (and the fact that it didn't cost anything, either), Jasper quickly slipped into line behind the kid with the ostentatious hat where he had difficulty not continually looking back over his shoulder at the doors every time they opened. He wasn't sure his old friends were even aware of his new profession as a Pokemon Trainer, and they were just as savvy to the city's events as he was so it wasn't very likely that they'd bother looking for him at the National Park. Not only that, but participating in the contest would grant him a few safe hours to himself, where at the very least he could figure out his next course of action. The line moved along at a slow pace, and when Jasper's turn came he filled out the form slowly, unable to hold back a slight smirk as he recalled the one and only other time he'd entered this dumb contest. Of course, he hadn't used his real name then but he decided that now wouldn't be such a big deal. He finished signing his name and then looked to the last section to fill in - which Pokemon would he be using in the competition?

'Last time, it was a no-brainer,' he thought, frowning as he tapped the pen against the counter. After all, Ditto had been his only option at the time. 'Zorua might be a bit young, and aren't dark types weak against bugs or something? I can't remember. Koffing wouldn't take it seriously enough and might cry if she gets stung by a Beedrill or something. If I went in with Paras, we'd run into every Scyther and Pinsir in the place and he'd die of fright. Croconaw and Ditto seem like my only viable options this time around...' Both Pokemon would easily be reliable enough, and finally he opted to just flip a coin - heads for Ditto and tails for Croconaw, seeing as she actually had one. After rooting through every pocket on his person he finally found a lone nickel, which would have to do. In a very practiced and easy manner he flipped it up, watching it spin before catching it again and in the blink of an eye he'd slapped it onto his overturned hand. "Tails it is," he said, quickly jotting down 'Croconaw' in the appropriate place. There, that had been easy enough!

For a solid moment or so, Hayley just stared blankly at the spot where the Onix had been recalled from. She was oblivious to the cheering Rattata still perched on her shoulder and she didn't even really realize it when a celebrating Ivy had jumped into her arms. "Wait... we won?" she asked tentatively. "We really won?" The brunette's expression of shock quickly morphed into one of excitement, and soon she was jumping up and down with her equally-happy Pokemon. "We did it! We won a badge! Forget the badge, we're winning BATTLES!"

Okay, so maybe she wouldn't be forgetting that badge, at least not any time soon. As Brock held out the shiny, shiny new badge for her to take, she couldn't help but practically squeal with excitement. The other winnings weren't nearly as exciting, but she accepted them regardless. "Thank you, Brock!" she said, completely oblivious to the sudden shift in his personality, at least until he asked her out on a date. The normally-cheerful girl suddenly seemed a bit nervous as she recalled her two Pokemon into their Pokeballs, not missing the way Ivy was glaring at him before she vanished. "Dinner? Um, well, that's kind of unconventional, don't you think-" Hayley would be cut off as her phone had suddenly started to ring, and she tried hard not to look as relieved as she felt. "Oops, that's me, gotta go!" she said quickly, bag slung over her shoulder as she was already retreating from the gym's battle arena. "Thanks again for the battle, Brock! Goodbye now, bye!"

For some time, Mike stood in place, mulling between his ethereal company on what exactly to do next, much to the confusion of passersby.

"Let's see, I could fight Brock, then try to see if I could work out some way to fight Misty."

Doesn't she have her gym in a giant pool?

"Ugh, she does." Mike shuddered at the very thought. He could avoid a stray water attack here or there, but if Misty or any of her trainers threw a whole pool at him, that wouldn't end well.

Maybe you could just have Beacon blast the whole gym in one fell swoop. a ghost offered with not enough sarcasm in his tone.

"Yeah, I don't feel like going to jail for super murder, thank you very much." the boy replied. While he wouldn't lie, the image of his Ampharos blasting the pool and seeing a bunch of knocked out fish floating to the surface did make him smile.

Powalski with Camerae on backup?

"That's the plan. I could just drown most of the gym with Camerae," his face contorted at the irony of that statement. "But since Powalski has been learning these Psychic and Dark moves, I figure he's got a solid enough chance to do some good damage. Don't wanna be rude, after all."

Not like that time when you did exactly that with Shiver in Roxanne's gym.

"Hey, listen you." Mike said, pointing his finger, hoping an appropriately sassy retort would spring forth when he opened his mouth next. "Bluehugh." Nope. Just a lot of tongue. It was true, His first gym battle did involve a little bit of bullshittery with his Cloyster and a particularly useful HM move.

I wonder how Hayley did in her gym battle. another asked, changing the subject.

"Well, she had a Ss-uh, Snivy was it?"

Pretty sure it's pronounced 'Snivvy'. a phantom 'corrected'.

"Ah! Well, I'm sure she did well. She seemed like a spirited enough girl. First gyms aren't too tough, anyway, especially with such a drastic type advantage."

Says you, Mr. Tsunami.

'Sucker Punch?' Riza thought, looking on as the dark vine suddenly struck out and caught poor Eris right in the stomach, causing her to squeak out in pain before the stunned Quilava was sent rolling back. The raven haired girl was surprised that Eris had even been able to finish firing off her Ember attack as the Sucker Punch had hit hard and fast, and she wasn't at all surprised to see that the fire-type could no longer battle. 'You were great, Eris,' Riza thought with a smile as she returned the Quilava to her poke ball, and she looked over at the Victreebel and frowned. 'Okay, let's see how they like this,' she thought with a devious smile and a flick of her wrist. Faustus the Dragonair appeared in a bright flash of light, his winged ears flapping lightly as he surveyed the situation. "Thunder Wave," Riza called, pointing at the Flycatcher Pokemon. She wanted to slow that thing down as much as possible. Faustus gave a gentle coo, and the orb on his neck began to crackle with electricity. The dragon-type flew up a bit, giving another, louder coo as he sent the jolt of electricity spiraling toward Victreebel.

The feeling of relief that Katie felt upon handing over the device was very short lived. Mai's voice was cold and harsh, and very successful in making Katie feel as though she'd done something wrong. The orange haired girl had never really been scolded in her life and it wasn't exactly pleasant, especially considering just whom she was being scolded by. Katie's first instinct was to run away, as she could feel the tears starting to well up in her eyes, but hearing Mai say her full name made her snap to attention, and her ruby eyes narrowed as she glared up at the older woman.

"I'm not a quitter!" she shouted, her hands balled into tight fists. "I got scared before and I made a mistake, but I'm not a quitter, and I'll prove it! I'll go back to Solaceon right now and get that egg! I'm going right now!" She continued to glare at Mai for a few more moments before she turned on a heel and began to stomp toward the warehouse door, fully intent on following through with her threat, not that it really was one.

It was well past suppertime when the nurse finally approached Juliet and Jack, the former of the two leaning against Jack's shoulder as she'd fallen asleep. Jack was also dozing quietly, and the nurse actually had to shake the two teens to wake them form their impromptu nap. "Oh, Lottie…" Juliet said sleepily, quickly sitting up and stretching. "Is Lottie going to be okay?" she asked, oblivious to the feverish blush slowly creeping into Jack's cheeks.

"Yes, your Riolu is going to be just fine after a good meal and a full night's rest. I suggest that you and your boyfriend do the same," she added, smiling brightly at the two before turning and leaving.

"Oh, no, we're not-" Juliet tried to correct her before she was out of earshot, but she was a tad too late. They weren't too late, however, to see Brett standing there nearby, trying desperately to mask his jealousy with a vapid smile.

"How long have you been standing there?" Jack asked, his face slowly returning to a normal color.

"Long enough," Brett said simply, now folding his arms across his chest. Juliet instantly got the feeling that he was trying to be imposing. "Your bike's locked up at the rack outside," he said, nodding to the blonde trainer. "And I'm glad Lottie's going to be alright. I'll leave you two to it, then," he said, turning on a heel.

"Brett," Juliet sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose with her thumb and index finger, as she could already feel a headache coming on.

"It's not like that," Jack said defensively. "You're getting all bent out of shape over nothing!"

"Yeah, sure, nothing," Brett shot back. He'd said something else, but it was drowned out by the whoosh of the sliding doors of the Pokémon Center.

"What's his problem?" Jack grumbled.

Juliet rolled her eyes, and then sighed again. It was all pretty clear to her that both Jack and Brett liked her, but unfortunately for them, she wasn't exactly in the market for a boyfriend right now. "Jack, it's just that... you should probably go," she said finally, also not really looking to come between friends. "I'm going to be spending the night here and I don't want you to be stuck here."

Jack opened his mouth to protest, but the firm look on Juliet's face quickly disarmed him. Looking disappointed, he nodded. "All right, I'll go. If you pass by the Daycare, stop in and say hello though, okay?"

"Promise," Juliet said. "And the next time I see you guys, we can have a battle. You'd better watch out though, because Lottie and I are going to get super strong." Jack had nothing to say to that and simply grinned before exiting the Pokémon Center, leaving Juliet all by herself.

While her PokeNav charged, Kasiya thumbed through her PokeDex, having decided to familiarize herself with her newest Pokemon's moves, both known and future. She wasn't a total stranger to the Duskull species, as she'd been rather fond of the one that belonged to Dante (and at one point, Keegan), and she'd been menaced by bunch of them and their Shuppet friends after leaving the Breeder's Gala in Lilycove City. She also decided to look over the entry for Shuppet, but it wasn't much later before her boredom caught up with her, and she frowned upon seeing that her 'Nav was only just a bit more than a quarter charged. This is taking way too long, the blonde thought irritably, now frowning at the device specifically. For a moment, she considered seeing if she could get Shocker to somehow charge it, but she quickly realized that it would probably be a bad idea as the powerful Raichu would probably overload it. Speaking of the Electric-type, Kasiya couldn't help but wonder how the mouse was feeling today.

Kasiya then made the executive decision to go for a bit of a walk in hopes of passing some more time. As she left the Pokemon Center, she let Shocker out of her Pokeball, as she was already missing the mouse's company. The Raichu, however, almost seemed to freeze up upon being let out, and she looked around in a paranoid fashion before she realized where she was and who she was with, and only then did she relax a little. Kasiya smiled warmly at the Pokemon, realizing that it would probably be a while before it fully sank in for the Electric-type that she was safe, and it was then that the blonde made a silent promise to Shocker - no, to all of her Pokemon - that nothing like that would ever happen again.

Finally, Erika thought, closing her eyes and giving a respectful nod to the Quilava as she was recalled by her trainer. It was a relief to finally have taken down Riza's first Pokemon, and also remove the Fire-type from the field, though she couldn't help but worry that the raven-haired girl's next Pokemon could be a Fire-type as well. This wouldn't be the case, however, as she was confronted with a Dragon-type, no less, and her dark eyes narrowed slightly. She'd only battled a few Dragonair in her time as a Gym Leader, and every one of them had been a tough opponent. Riza wasted no time in calling out for a Thunder Wave, and Erika knew she had to act fast - Victreebel wasn't the speediest Pokemon to begin with. "Victreebel, darling, use Toxic!" The electricity coiled around the Flycatcher Pokemon, causing him to flinch a little. He recovered, this time, at least, before spitting out a large, highly-toxic liquid at the Dragonair.

As Katie went from looking hurt and scared to defensive and angry, Mai smiled. It was exactly the reaction she'd been hoping for. The Rocket Admin hadn't been lying when she said she liked the girl, and seeing the determined look in Katie's ruby-red eyes only helped to validate her previous assessment. "Good, that's what I like to hear," she said, still grinning, "but at the moment, I have a different assignment for you. Since you are here in Veilstone City, I want you to challenge the Veilstone City Gym Leader - Maylene - and defeat her. You are not to leave this city until you have done so. I'm sure this mission requires no further explanation, yes?"

With a few of his eggs out of commission, Kilik grit his teeth. Attacking with Barrage would continue to work, that was for sure. But very little damage could be done with just two eggs. He crossed his arms over his chest and closed his eyes for a moment that felt like an eternity. I could use Uproar and that would awaken Carnivine, but all the eggs should be screaming, even the ones in his grasp. Perfect! His eyes shot open. Immediately, he saw the four eggs wiggling and straining to get out of the vines. "Alright, Exeggcute! Time to give a little rise and shine! Use Uproar!"

The Overlord Brain hovered back a moment with his remaining egg and opened his mouth. A low rumbling "Eeeeeeegg..." began to shake out from his vocal chords. Following, his free egg did the same with a little higher pitch. Three of the four eggs that were currently held captive had their mouths uncovered, but even the fourth began to release a muffled tone. They began to thrash around as they got louder with the Overlord Brain shaking intensely. Sound waves washed over the Carnivine like water on a shore, forward and back, forward and back. With one final "ECUTE!!" a massive burst of sound fired out towards the foe.

Kilik stood with a slightly impressed look on his face. He'd never seen the move in action before, at least not that he could remember, and seeing it done in such style was just fantastic. Here was hoping it would have been enough.

The rest of the preparations for the arrival of the new trainers consisted mostly of tidying things up and double and triple-checking everything. After the Pokemon had finished eating, Professor Juniper inspected each of them, carefully taking notes of their heights and weights, and she flashed a knowing smile in Miharu's direction when she saw that Oshawott was currently suffering from a mild case of balloon-belly. Despite this, all three of the starters were in perfect health and ready for training. Juniper sighed a bit sadly as she recalled them into their PokeBalls and handed them over to Miharu so she could polish them before setting them in their places in the cart. "Um, I'm sorry if I come off as a bit nosy but... what's the matter, Professor Juniper? Why are you sad?" the small girl asked, tediously moving each sphere so they were perfectly centered.

The professor chuckled at Miharu's polite inquiry, placing her hands on her hips as she looked around the lab. Everything was ready for the new trainers. "As happy as I am to be delegating these young Pokemon to brand-new trainers, it does make me a little sad to part with the little ones after we've invested so much time and love raising them. But, by doing so, we ensure that each trainer and their new partner will get the best start possible." She watched the girl as she spoke, noticing that she seemed to be preoccupied by staring at the three PokeBalls, namely the one that held Snivy. "Miharu, may I ask you a hypothetical question?" she asked, that mischievous glimmer once again appearing in her eyes.

The green-haired girl had been staring at Snivy's PokeBall, but mostly because it was the one in her line of sight. She'd been thinking about the day she'd met what would qualify as her starter Pokemon - Tingle the Beldum. She'd certainly not expected for the quirky, arm-shaped Pokemon to 'hatch' out of the egg she'd won from the art contest, but the two had bonded almost instantly. She looked up as Juniper spoke her name, nodding quickly to show she'd heard the question. "Yes, of course," she said.

Juniper continued to smile. "If you had the option of choosing one of these three starter Pokemon, which one would it be?"

Unlike Karrigan, Damien did not bother to watch the screen as the trade progress sorted itself out. He didn't dwell on the curious nature of trade-induced evolutions or the mystical energies involved; all he really cared about was evolving that useless little fish. To the dark-haired boy's surprise, Karrigan was the first to snatch up her PokeBall, and he nodded as well, grabbing Feebas' PokeBall as well before he followed the redhead outside, even though he was mildly curious to see how the patrons of the Pokemon Center would react when it had suddenly been taken over by a giant rock/steel snake monster.

As they made their way around to the center's outdoor battlefield (by now, he had realized that most, if not all Pokemon Centers seemed to have one of these), Damien caught sight of the same female ghost from before. She was leaning up against the side of the building, and the glare she was shooting him was nothing less than hostile. Yeah, because that makes me want to talk to you even more, he thought bitterly, pointedly looking away from her as he studied the painted white lines of the arena. Deciding that he'd waited long enough, he tossed Feebas' PokeBall to the ground, actually grinning (it was a small grin but hey, it still counts, right?) as it burst open to reveal the Water-type.

Like the ghost girl that was still lingering nearby, Feebas glared daggers at him as a white luminescence overcame her body, and after a few seconds of blinding light, the tiny, hapless fish was a tiny, hapless fish no more - in a matter of moments, she'd gone from being around two feet to about twenty, but her colouring was much different from the image he'd found in his PokeDex earlier that day. Her long 'ears' were grey and her tail was yellow, and the reds that did remain were slightly difference. The one thing that was the same was the cold, hateful stare the newly-evolved Milotic was giving her trainer, and he was only just able to step out of the way as she spat a relatively-weak Water Gun at him. "Now that's more like it," he said, mostly to himself, and he recalled Milotic before she could attack him again as he looked over at Karrigan and Aegeus.

The Angsty Rocket

Rajasi frowned as Moti suggested that they hit the sack. This man was too slow. Sure, these things took time and it probably would be useful to have one of the doctors look at Claire, but they could easily get the same results after acquiring the data. Moti knew (or at least he should know) the truth about her situation. It was Team Rocket’s fault that the poor girl had lost her memories in the first place and the rest of this trip was just a charade to buy her trust as they continued to experiment on her and record the effects of their amnesia machine.

There was just something about Moti that rubbed the brown haired boy the wrong way. Maybe it was his generally upbeat attitude, or his goofiness, but Rajasi could tell that there was something dangerous further down. Whatever it was, it did not seem to fit the Team Rocket code. Not just anyone joined the nefarious organization. The everyday grunts excluded, everyone in the higher tiers of Team Rocket had a vice to hold them to the organization. This guy seemed to want to help people, a much too altruistic goal. It reminded him of each new family he had encountered as a child after the untimely death of his parents. The system had tried to pair him several times, but each time the family eventually gave up once they realized he wouldn’t be the ultimate son.

In any case, he’d go to the other wing once Moti was asleep and see what he could dig up. He could play the game as well as anyone, but he wanted to get higher in the organization and to change the world in his own way. If that meant skipping the chain of command every now and then, who would question him? He had been promoted by taking similar actions on previous assignments.

The Memory Experiment

Claire fell asleep quickly, but her body found little rest. Her dreams were filled with smoke and fire, shrieks and screams. A multi-tiered tower stood defiantly in the sky one moment and burst into flame the next. Brass tiles and planks of burning wood rained down around the young girl. The inferno was terrifying, but she knew she had to walk through it. She had to get inside the tower. She crept up to the broken doorway and paused. Apparently it was a mistake to do so. The blonde haired girl gasped as the frame collapsed, awakening her from her fitful slumber.

The dormitory was dim, but in the light of the full moon she could make out a figure walking across the floor. ’Rajasi?’ she said to herself as she recognized his silhouette. ’What’s he doing up?’ she wondered as she glanced over to see if Moti was in his bunk. ’Still fast asleep.’ After a moments consideration, she decided it wouldn’t hurt to follow Rajasi. Claire’s curiosity was piqued and it didn’t seem like her dreams would let her rest anyway. Deciding her socks were sneakier than her sneakers, Claire plopped off her bunk onto the floor, silent as a shadow.

All the scientists had followed them to bed so she didn't need to be too careful. It seemed that Rajasi had also come to the same conclusion, as he had already left the dormitory and seemed to only be concerned with looking ahead of himself. Claire didn’t want to get too far behind so she quickened her pace, only slowing down enough to make sure she wouldn’t be noticed if he suddenly decided to turn around.

The Steel Singer

Although there was a full moon, Mawile didn’t have any trouble sneaking up to the Memory Institute. A storm was brewing and the rolling clouds provided ample darkness to get in close. It appeared that grounds security wasn’t all that important to the humans that owned the building. The Deceiver Pokemon managed to do a full lap of it, using her “dowsing egg” without being bothered by anything other than the breeze. It had wiggled the most on the west wing, but she found on her second trip around the building that the only quiet point of entry was an unlocked window on the east wing.

She quietly slid up the pane and hopped through. Despite her sturdy steel body, the Mawile was as quiet as a house Meowth. The room, which was more of a closet than a room proper, was empty except for a few filing cabinets in the corner. The Deceiver Pokemon ignored them and went to the door ahead of her, opening it just enough to see out. In the larger room ahead, she saw a lone figure in a white lab coat, sitting at a desk in front of a computer.

“Cre-rei-ze, croa-te-zei.” And just like that, the scientist was out like a light. Mawile smiled as she poked his sleeping body. This was going to be a piece of cake. She honestly hadn’t expected to use her special move at this time of night, but it certainly proved useful (even if her target was probably already sleep-deprived). She turned and located the exit that lead toward the western portion of the building.

On a haunch, the Deceiver Pokemon decided to climb the first staircase she came to. In the center of the building she had a close call as a brown-haired human charged by her. Mawile managed to hide under a well placed desk that was waiting in the hallway to be put into a dumpster. Although she thought that he might have seen her, it became apparent after half a minute of waiting in the dark that he was too distracted to notice. Unfortunately, she didn't know that he was being followed.

Lava Plume really? Given that Normans floors were a nice polished wood the gym leader wasn't to happy with this call. Frowning the gym leader thought quickly on what to do. "Get in close and blast it with a Toxic." He decided after a moment. It was a risky move and it would put his pokemon close to the other, the lava falling everywhere would for sure hit the rabid white Zangoose. However there was another reason for him wanting to get in close. This gym's special move would make things a lot more interesting if his pokemon managed to get burned. That is if his pokemon managed to live through the attack.

The Zangoose let out a challenging roar as it took off across the now somewhat on fire gym floor. It's nimble body managing to dodge the huge pools already on the floor. Still as the Cat Ferret pokemon got closer more and more of the flames hit its body. With a loud hiss at a particularly hard hit the Zangoose shrieked as it barfed up a huge hairball/toxic attack before falling to the ground right in the middle of a lava pool and blacking out.

"Hm, good work Zangoose." Norman offered while he recalled the white pokemon. It seemed like he was down to his last one. Things were about to get a lot more interesting in here. "Hope you don't think my last pokemon will go down that easy." He called out as he tossed his last pokeball out into the field. In a flash an extremely large, extremely fat and extremely lazy Slacking appeared on the ground. The huge pokemon took one look at the battlefield before giving a large yawn before slumping on the ground and began to pick its nose.

Dante could only stare in surprise? Yeah, surprise was the right word as an man probably in his early twenties let out an inhuman screech and practically killed himself getting up a tree in some sort of escape method. Dante had to give him credit though, he had never seen anyone climb a tree that fast, pokemon or human. Raising an eyebrow at the actions Dante took in the scene in front of him. Kali was barking angrily at what appeared to be a Ninjask that was holding... Keegans Axew! Haha! "Did you steal my friends Axew?"

The blond just stared with wide eyes down at the Deino that was growling at his own pokemon. After a moment grey eyes glanced over at him. "Look, look I don't even want it anymore. It was a momentary lapse of judgement! Just take it and take that... that thing away from here all right?" The would be thief managed to stammer out.

"Thing? You mean Kali?" Dante was more curious now that he saw the Ninjask buzz over to his side and offer the Axew over to him, below him Kali just kept barking angrily at the other dragon. "Are you afraid of her?" Taking the Axew back Dante felt a wave of relief that Keegan wasn't going to beat the ever loving s**t out of him and everyone else around him now.

"Look just shut up and go!" The other managed to bite out holding onto the tree like a life line. The would-be thief let out another strangled whimper at the sight of Dante's newly hatched Turtwig ambling into the area munching on the grass the whole time.

"Ok weirdo." Dante muttered. "Just don't steal other peoples pokemon or something?" Feeling pretty justified now Dante struggled to grab Kali's pokeball to recall her again before bending down and scooping the baby Turtwig back into his arms. With one last glance over at the thief still clinging to life in the tree Dante headed back to the gym.

Admittedly, Jasper was more than a bit reluctant to part with his other four Pokemon, even if it was just for the hour or so this contest would take, and he muttered his thanks as someone wearing a uniform handed him a small bucket full of Park Balls. Soon, Jasper and the other contestants were all lined up outside, their Pokemon partner at their sides as they listened to the rules for the contest. Jasper was standing next to Big Straw Hat Kid, and he easily noticed the healthy Butterfree that seemed to be his partner of choice for the competition. As he studied his competition, he saw that a lot of the Pokemon chosen to compete were of the bug, flying or grass variety. Most noticeably, one girl had a Noctowl at her side, and Jasper felt a chill as the Owl Pokemon turned its head all the way around to cast him an icy glare.

"Are you sure that's the Pokemon you want to use?" Big Straw Hat Kid asked, peering out from behind the brim of his hat. His tone was more than a bit condescending, as well. "Just how do you plan to win this contest? You don't even have a net!"

Jasper looked down at the kid, for once unable to think of something witty or clever to retort with. After all, winning the contest hadn't exactly been part of the plan. "Maybe I'm not trying to win it," he said casually, shrugging. Croconaw currently wasn't offering much help, as she was busy taking large bites out of the tall grass. "Maybe I just like bug Pokemon, and thought of this as a good opportunity to learn a thing or two about them." Okay, so it was a tiny bit of a lie, but whatever.

The kid's patronizing gaze softened then; apparently Jasper's answer, truthful or not, was quite satisfactory. "Me, too," he said, now wearing a big, goofy grin. "I love bug Pokemon! Me and Flutters enter this contest every Saturday!" His Butterfree chirped happily in agreement.

"Never woulda guessed," Jasper chuckled, giving the kid a respectful nod. "Best of luck to you in the contest," he added, looking forward as the official raised a small pistol and let off a shot. Jasper frowned at the sound; perhaps scaring the hell out of all the Pokemon in the park was part of their game-plan. The sound had taken Croconaw's attention away from her chomping of the grass, her eyes narrowed as she looked around for the source of the sound. "Let's go get us a bug Pokemon, or something," Jasper mumbled, nodding to the gator as every other contestant had already set out.

'Saved by the phone!' Hayley thought as she all but rushed out of the Pewter Gym; her phone still ringing impatiently in her hand. It wasn't that she disliked the idea of going out on a date, and with a gym leader, at that; it was more the principle of the thing. Wasn't it a tad unprofessional to be asking your gym challengers out to dinner? Oh right! Her phone was still ringing! Hayley's pace was still quite quick as she headed back towards the Pokemon Center, and she finally located the talk button. Of course, by that time, it was too late and whoever had been calling had been directed to her voicemail.

After several tries at inputting her password, Hayley finally managed to pull up the message and she squeezed her phone between her shoulder and her ear as she tried to think of what to do with her sparkly new Boulder Badge. The message was from her mother, and though she'd only left home a few days ago, it was rather satisfying to hear the familiar voice:

"Hi sweetie! I guess I caught you at a busy time, but that's okay! I'd expect nothing less from my Watcher-In-Training! I wanted to call and tell you that the Adoption Agency finally got back to us about the inquiries we submitted a few months ago, you know, about your brother? It seems he never did find a permanent family to live with, and eventually went off on his own. He's no longer in the system, but they did give me the address of the last foster family he stayed with. It's in Goldenrod City, how about that? I'm going to email you the files they sent me, and if you want to try and track him down, well, that's up to you. Just keep in mind that no matter what you find out, your father and I love you with all our hearts, and you'll always be our little girl! Take care of yourself, and give Cynder our love as well!"

Hayley had stopped walking entirely as the message ended. Her hand was gripping the phone so tightly that her knuckles had all turned bone-white. She'd almost forgotten that several months ago, she and her parents had submitted a written request for the agency to send them information on the whereabouts of her long-lost brother. To be completely honest, she'd never expected them to comply; red tape and rules and confidentiality and all that. This news sparked all sorts of questions in the young brunette's mind: where was he now? Was he still in Goldenrod City? What was he doing? Had he become a trainer, like many other kids their age? Did he even have any idea that he had a twin sister out there, somewhere, that was looking for him? It was a little overwhelming to think about. For the first time in, well, ever, Hayley had a solid lead, and with the blessing of her adoptive parents, she fully intended to follow it, wherever it would take her.

Walk walk walk, walk to the gym.

Mike placed one foot in front of the other in a masterful display of casual locomotion as he walked down the streets of Pewter City, carrying on his previous conversation about gym strategies and the like. Every so often he checked his face to make sure he wasn't wearing his sunglasses because it was a bit too dark to have them on, old hit songs be damned.

You don't own a pair of sunglasses. One phantom insisted after the boy's third inspection. Mike twisted his lips in frustration and looked at the sky. Clear as could be. He snorted out a small bit of black smoke out his nostrils.

"Don't you pull any more of that rain s**t on me, sky." he said, looking up. "And you!" he pointed to the sun. "You keep doing your thing. Shine on."

The only crazy diamond here is you.

"Cruel, but accurate!" Who was he to dispute facts?

The Pewter City Gym loomed over him. The aesthetic was pretty predictable. It looked like it was carved out of a giant stone slab. "Not gonna lie, pretty hardcore. Not as awesome as Blaine's, but that's a bit of an unfair comparison."

Not like you're biased or anything. a ghost commented with no lack of sarcasm. Once again, they spoke only truth.

"Well, let's see what Kanto's first gym has to offer."
