"He's out cold right now. I made sure he wasn't able to interrupt us." The voice that spoke to Nathan wasn't anything like Yoru's. It was rough and full of rage.

His heart started to pound, but he looked calm as he closed the door and moved into the house. "Mao, you didn't kill him, did you?"

"No... I can't as long as he is in that body. I would be screwing myself over if I did then. Just imagine... I wouldn't have anywhere to go." Mao stepped out from the shadows so that Nathan could at least see part of his face. Though he was only a spirit without a vessel he still seemed as if he had a solid form. "Nice to see the man I thought loved me so dearly living with the only person in this world I truly hate. It warms my heart."

Or should I have died quickly and joined you? I thought about it, I really did. I couldn't cope, still can't. But the second main point is this: I only met Yoru a few days ago. Not even a week. I haven't been any kind of happy for seven years: how long did you want me to be alone and unhappy for, Mao?"
Then he smiled sadly. "I suppose you could kill me and then I'd be with you forever."

And you can't blame Yoru: he wanted to live. Wouldn't anybody? Isn't that the reason we're born or created, so we can live? And he never knew about me, Mao. It was a shock to both of us, not to mention that I thought I'd never love or live again. He reminded me of you, but I couldn't follow him - or so I thought, until I did it anyway. It made no sense to me. At all."
Nathan sat down with his back to the wall, shaking as tears trickled down his face, unchecked, unnoticed.
"How were any of us supposed to know? And I wasn't impatient, I just thought you couldn't come back. Wasn't sure I could have you back: what if I caused you to be killed again?" he whispered, voice hoarse.

Mao seemed unmoved by Nathan's tears. Everything he said just made him more angry still. "He didn't know!? I can believe when you say you didn't know, but he didn't!? No! He knew! He knew all along and he still went along with it. He lied to you and he got close to you just so he could gain your trust. That's what he does! He's a lying, thieving snake! He knew we were together and he still went and tried to take you away from me. He gained your protection so he could make sure I couldn't get near him. I can believe you had no idea at first but even you should have noticed by now. He plays mind games with people. Do you know why? Because he's nothing more than a shadow! A filthy dark shadow that manipulates and destroys. He know nothing about love. He was the reason I wa sick when I was young. I was sick because I got a damn ball of pitch black energy in my body and it took form and by the time he was pulled out he was already almost whole. I bet all he wanted with you was your soul. All he needs is the soul of an angel to become real. A real demon. I'm luck I was able to knock him out before he had the chance to find me. Otherwise I wouldn't even be here right now talking to you Nathan!"

He didn't know who to believe anymore. But instead of crumpling further, he raised his head. "Is your grandmother still alive? Someone who will help me? Me. Not necessarily either of you two, but me. Because you're right: my mind is messed up. Both of you keep pushing and I'll break, since I was pretty close to being unfixable during those seven years.
So is there someone who will explain to me, who can help me?"

Mao sighed and looked away sensing what was coming next. He stepped back and stood in the spot he was originally in as a portal opened up in front of Nathan. "Go on then. You called for the Devil Lady now she wants to see you." With that Mao disappeared.

Nathan almost snorted: go into a portal alone? But then he wiped his tears away and stood, stumbling his way forward into the portal.

The portal lead to a vast garden. The sky was painted a mix of blue and lavender and there were several white fluffy clouds. A single bench stood lifeless in the center of the garden and a woman sat on that bench reading a book. Her hair was golden and her eyes were emerald with very elegant looking glasses resting on he nose. She looked now to be in her mid twenties but she only assumed Nathan would know to recognize her by now.

Nathan walked forward, unsure of his reception. "Good evening. I'm sorry for intruding on you, but I need someone to explain to me, and I hope you won't think me impertinent."

Nathan took a deep breath. "I need the truth and I know - I hope - that you won't let bias get in the way. I know you love Mao, and a large part of me always will but... I can't let Yoru die if what he said was true.
Can you help me by telling me what happened all those years ago when Mao got sick?"

She sighed an nodded. "Most of what Mao claims is true. One would think that a demon could not be possessed. After all demons are supposed to be the ones doing the possessing. While that is partially true, there is an exception. Demons can be possessed by dark entities which we simply refer to as shadows. When Mao was young he was rather anti-social. By a cruel twist of fate he ended up befriending one such creature. That shadow entered his body and that is when he became ill. He was like that for almost three years. Our doctors had no idea what was happening to him but if they didn't do something then Mao would die. They decided the best thing to do was to take the part of Mao's soul that was infected and separate it from the rest of him. They did and they took the shadow along with it. By then it was able to take the piece of the soul and merge with it so that it could take form. However because it did not gain the entire soul it wasn't able to develop well. This is why when Yoru was created, he was weak and often ill. The name also originally belonged to Mao. Yoru took that name and Mao's father gave him the name he has now. Mao explained the rest to you but I cannot say for certain that what Yoru may have felt for you was real or not. The truth is he is like a mirage. He never should have been allowed to exist."
