Of course everything went quiet again when Maia came down the stairs the rest of the way. The immediate thought was of course that she had overheard, but if so she hadn't heard anything dire.
When she came into the living room she'd find an oddly youthful scene; Dari, unpainted, sitting with one arm around the back of the couch. Toby was still cross-legged but now slightly sideways toward Dari, holding onto one ankle. Both heads turned to Maia. Dari smiled. Toby did too, but it didn't quite reach his eyes.
"Can't sleep?" the blonde asked.

Maia took in the scene and sipped at her water. "No," She admitted. "Dari, can I talk to you a moment? I keep having these awful dyreams." Dreams, no. Thoughts of Toby? Yes. She offered Dari her hand. "Upstairs." In private. So Toby wouldn't realize yet. Bleh. She hated keeping secrets.

"Sure," Dari responded, standing and taking Maia's hand. He had a feeling this was going to be about Toby whether it be his current situation or his existence in general. Either way she needed to talk. "I'll be back?" he more asked than told Toby.
Toby, sullen, shook his head. "Nah, I think I'm going to watch some TV and go to bed."
"If you're sure."
Toby smiled. "I'm fine." Why did the idea of a secret between his partner and his roommate upset him? God, it really was getting to him, wasn't it?

Oh, now Toby seemed sad again. She let go of Dari's hand for a moment and gave the blonde another hug. "Goodnight Toby," she said. She took Dari's hand and led him upstairs. She sat on her bed.
"How do I get him out of my head? I can't even sleep."

Toby smiled and gave another hug. "Goodnight."
Dari followed her upstairs then and stood at the foot of her bed. Oh.
"What about him?" He invited himself to sit on the guest-bed-turned-Maia's.

"Everything," Maia sighed. "Well. More I'm worried about Selkie love. But I'm worried about him too. He's acting all strange and I want to help. And I don't know how to tell if what I feel is real because I've never felt this way..." And she didn't know what to do about fixing this.

Dari gave himself a few moments to think before he responded.
"I don't know what to do about the risk of selkie love. It... happens. It must be hard, I'm very sorry," he said, taking Maia's hand. "As for the way he is acting...this time of the year is difficult for him. In a few days, it will be over again. There's not much to be done to help."

Maia sighed. Dari's words hadn't been especially reassuring. "Maybe I'll email one of the other selkies and they can tell the difference." She gestured for Dari to sit on the bed with her. "I hate this."

Dari joined Maia and nodded.
"I can put you in contact with one. Niamh is always open to helping other selkies." She was often busy with official assignments but she always made time for her own people. They'd been planning to contact her from the beginning, but of course nothing really ever went as planned. "I'm sorry. I wish I could help more."

Maia nodded, giving Dari a hug. He'd helped so much already just by talking to her when she needed him; he was so special. "I love you Dari. I'd be lost without you. Do you think I can email her tomorrow? After class?" She hoped Niamh would be able to help.
"Could we bake a cake for Toby? That might make him feel better."

"Sure. I'll get you her email address. I can get you her phone number too if you'd rather, and you can talk over the computer." Dari wasn't sure Maia would like what she heard, but it was the right thing to do to give her access to it.
"We could bake him something, sure. It might just make him sad, though. The best idea is to keep things as normal as possible, I think."

"No, I don't need her phone number," she said, shaking her head. She didn't want to distract the woman, and she wasn't particularly keen on talking to strangers. "That's the opposite of what I want to do," Maia sighed. "I'll try to ignore it, then and act like everything's normal."
She hugged Dari. "Thank you. I'll try to sleep now."

"It won't be normal," Dari assured her, "but we'll have to pretend it is. Things that make him smile should still make him smile." He nodded then and stroked Maia's hair as he had seen humans do and offered her a smile.
"If you can't sleep, call for me." He'd hear her regardless of how quiet she was.

"I will," Maia said, nodding. She gave Dari a small smile and layed back in bed. "Goodnight Dari," she covered herself in the blanket and layed on her side. "Are you going to check on Toby?"

"I'll keep an eye on him," Dari agreed, "Goodnight, Maia." He left quietly and closed the door behind him.
The next morning Toby was up early, but not quite so early as the night before. He stood by the toaster, waiting. No eggs today, no meat, no biscuits. He didn't feel like cooking.
