"Strong elvish names," Elrohir couldn't help but murmur, smiling. "Do they resemble their names, do you think?"
Naming children with names that meant something special was something that had been done in the Aldrich family since they had first taken the throne. It had always been a source of interest to see whether or not the children turned out like their names' meanings.

Triton mused on that for several moments, "I do think so," he mused thinking about how Skye was, Storm and Starr were certainly the opposites in some ways that their names sounded like, "I don't know elvish names to know their meanings or what a certain name would invoke," he admitted.
Especially for Celebor and Idhril it was very difficult for him.

"Celeb," Elrohir began, "silver ... or, tall. In a name, together, Celebor: tall one of silver. Idhril ... thoughtful woman."
He shrugged. "I admit, if they're just children, it might not be possible to tell if they reflect their names yet - though our naming system is just strange altogether, and Elnara, being single, wouldn't be able to use our proper naming system ... but still, it's a curiosity."

"Why do you say it's strange?" Triton asked.
He was use to names meaning something so he hadn't thought much of it. Though he was sure Celebor was going to grow up tall, and for that matter what did being single have anything to do with it?

"At birth," Elrohir explained, "a child is named by his or her father - a Father-name, that cannot be changed. At ten, a child choses or invents their own Chosen name, expressing preference or experience. A mother can also give her child a name of her choosing, a Mother-name, one by which only she calls him or her."
He shrugged. "There are others, but those are the main three. Not having a father, her children will have no Father-names, the core of their identities. I suppose the names Elnara gave them would take the place of their Father-names, but then they won't have any Mother-names in the future."
Well, perhaps in the future, if she ever married, their new father would give them their Mother-names. There was an interesting thought.

"Wow..." Triton mused on that, "That's a bit confusing..."
He couldn't imagine having to depend on a father to name him, even though his name derived from the name of his mother's first love. He couldn't even imagine being able to change his own name. He had heard of nicknames but not that.

Donovan didn't say anything on that but listened, that was a complicated litte ditty. Though it now explained why it seemed to be important to Elrohir what a father was. Still, he was use to having Kara name all the children, unless she asked his input.

"Sorry," Elrohir shrugged. "Simplest possible explanation. It's actually more complicated than that, but unless you do something to really impress someone, I don't think you'll have to worry about it."
Though if they managed to get rid of the freebooters, or the slave traders, or whoever it was who was so determinedly harassing his mother, he was sure someone would try to give them another name.

"Well, I mean.. the idea is simple enough," Triton admitted, "It's just that, I can't imagine having more names besides any nicknames I might have, and it might have to do with the fact Mom was single for a very long time."
And even then most of the time she did the naming.

"Well," Elrohir said with another shrug, "different world, different culture. You can imagine some of the elder elves here, I'm sure they have several dozen names."
Sir Valdemar for one. Elrohir was certain that by now he was the oldest elf alive.

Yue nodded slowly, though he couldn't imagine such a thing. His name, it's meaning, the meaning his mother gave to him was far too important, even if other names bestowed upon him by other people was meant in good reason. He was the moon, his brother was snow, together they represented the two things that made their magicks.
Still.. he understood.

"Hmm..." Triton hadn't met the man, but he had heard about him from Yukito, "Good point."
And he of all people should understand the term culture difference.

"Learning one's Chosen-name, or Nick-names, is a good way to learn what someone is like before you know them well personally," Elrohir suggested. "Sometimes asking them can help you to get to know them."

"I never thought of it like that," Triton murmured.
Partly because nicknames at home weren't like that, but then again naming was an important thing here. Not that it wasn't back home, but well there was more than one way to name yourself and main names were important.

Elrohir nodded.
"I ... don't want to be presumptuous, but ... your culture names your children like the humans of this world, I suppose?" he asked hesitantly. "Just ... the parents agree on a name at birth, and that's it?"
