My God that was a long post, he-he. mrgreen Thanks for coming and sharing the info about SCA with us Jasta. You are a baroness, you say? My word!

Really Gornwen? Is it being taken over like that? I don't think anyone minds you stating anything, really.

Yay SCAdians!

I live in the Barony of Jararvellir (pronounced "yar-ah-VET-ler." No really.) in the Kingdom of Northshield where I am known as Lady Sarah the Foole of Greyfeathre, an Englishwoman of nebulous time period (I'm a rapier fencer, which is late period, but I love so many early period things, none the least of which is clothing). The name is pretty self-explanatory, except for the Greyfeathre bit, which is the name of my household.

Rank in the SCA is an interesting affair. When you join, you're assumed to have been noble-born and therefore have the right to be addressed as "my lord" or "my lady." After that, rank is awarded based on accomplishment and contribution, starting with Award of Arms (which can either stand alone or be attached to another named award), which gives you the right to use the title "Lord" or "Lady." After that, comes the Grant of Arms, which can also stand alone or be attached to another award (in my kingdom at least, it's almost always attached to another award). That gives you the right to use "Honorable Lord" or "Honorable Lady" or "Lordship" or "Ladyship."

Then comes Peerage, or Patent of Arms, level awards. These are Knight (in recognition of accomplishment in the arts martial), Laurel (in recognition of accomplishment in Arts and Sciences, or Pelican (in recognition of massive amounts of service). Being made a Peer of the Realm is a really big deal, since it means you've done something really majorly cool and you have the attitude of the best of the best nobility has to offer.

There are a couple of other ways of becoming a Peer of the Realm, all of them involving Royal Peerage. One, you can have been King or Queen. Upon stepping down from being King or Queen the first time, you are made a Count or Countess. Upon the stepping down from being King or Queen for the second time, you are made a Duke or Duchess. There's no other technical titles after that for being King or Queen more times than that, but there is a long-running joke that you then become an a*****e. You can also be Prince or Princess of a Principality (by the same method by which you become King or Queen of a Kingdom). Stepping down from that, you get to be a Viscount or a Viscountess. There are also Landed Baronies and Court Baronies. Landed Barons and Baronesses hold the High Seat of their Barony. The length of the term varies from Barony to Barony based on each group's own choosing. Usually upon stepping down, the King and Queen award them a Court Barony. Court Baronies can also be handed out on the whim of the King and Queen for accomplishment, either because Knight, Laurel, or Pelican don't quite fit or because their accomplishments cover more than one area, or any number of reasons (but, for the most part, the people who receive Court Baronies get them for reasons that everyone in their kingdom understand). That to is a very big deal

So, yeah, I'm long-winded too. We all like to talk and explain things a lot when people ask. mrgreen

*giggles* Yes, indeed we do...

I'm in the Barony of Stierbach in Atlantia, but I was born and grew up in Carolingia, in the Eastrealm (Boston area). Hod still lives there, but I don't think he's playing right now; he's insanely busy at work.

Or just insane...

But yeah, I do still live in Carolingia. Haven't been to an event in like, years... haven't had a life in about the same length of time.

With luck that'll change soon tho.

Yer welcome Gornwen!

I suppose you were right Jasta. Berz here just added a demonstration on long posts, he-he. mrgreen

You know, that "ladyship" sounds a bit odd to me. I mean, it's like hearing about a ship that only a lady can sail for whatever reason. sweatdrop

Hi! I live in Ontario and I love reading about fantasy, medieval stuff and I love video games. I hate when people put down fantasy and other stuff related to fantasy.

Hello everyone... it seems I got the summoning to join this guild from DM_Melkhar. I must say, it appeals to my love of fantasy and history quite well.

Most of my information is found on my profile; it's pretty detailed. :] I just became more active this past month after leaving Gaia for a few years. It never did catch my interest much until now, for some reason. But I'm happy to be here, and happy to meet you all.

You can call me Frey, my nickname that I use everywhere, or Alynxis, or Lynx. -waves-
