The Deepest Promise

After an evening of shrieking around the yard, a new experience with Indian food (that Airyn had, reluctantly, agreed to try and subsequently found quite good), some graham crackers and milk for dessert, and shadow puppet stories acted out by Paimon's clever clawed fingers, Star and Airyn were tucked into bed - the demoness leaving her actual bed behind in favor of her pink sleeping bag on the floor next to Airyn's.

"Star?" Airyn whispered, after ten minutes of trying to get to sleep. "Are you awake?"

"Shh," came the immediate reply, to Airyn's surprise. There was movement, and she saw the demoness was sitting up, watching the sliver of light under the door intently. "Quiet..."

Airyn sat up too, and the two of them stared at the hallway light for what seemed like hours, until it finally flicked out. Only then did Star relax with a sigh. "Mom and Dad went to bed."

"Why does that matter?" Airyn asked, as Star scrambled up onto her bed and clicked the light on her nightstand on. "What're you doing?"

"I told you that we were gonna do something, but I'm not supposed to do it... so I had to wait until Mom and Dad went to bed. And we gotta do it at night, so." Star climbed down quietly and squirmed under her bed next, digging around. "Oof."

"What is it?" Airyn's curiousity was piqued, and she squirmed out of her sleeping bag too. "Whatcha talking about?"

"I'm sick of Renswell bugging you... an' there's something I can do..." Star scooted out from under the bed with a shoebox in one hand. "I got this stuff."

"What kind of something?" Airyn sat down cross-legged on her sleeping bag.

"Something demons can do with anyone, even normal humans... anything, as long as it has a soul and can say 'yes'..." Star worked the top off of the shoebox and pulled out a sharp kitchen knife.

Airyn pulled back. "W-what's that for?"

Star smiled. "It's okay," she said, quietly. "I won't do it unless you want to. It's, um... it's a soul pact. I told you about my brother... he made a soul pact with a sorceress. I can... well, I can make a soul pact with you... and give you magic..."

Airyn stared, disbelieving. "Are you... are you serious?!"

"Yeah," Star said, putting the knife down and rummaging in the box again, this time coming up with a tin of band-aids and a small, rolled-up piece of paper. "I don't know exactly how it works, but... my parents told me how to make one, so I wouldn't do it on accident or let somebody trick me into making one."

"And it'll give me magic? Really?" Airyn scooted over, close to Star. "That'd really surprise Renswell! I could get him back, and he'd never bug me again... ever!"

"Magic... yeah, you can ask for magic. Lots of grown-ups ask to live forever 'n' ever," Star said, pulling one last item - a pin - out of the shoebox. "I guess it depends on what the person making the pact wants..."

"Magic," Airyn said, firmly, her excitement building. "Are you sure? This sounds amazing!"

"It'll work," Star replied, confidently, although her voice was oddly shaky, just a little bit. "If you really want to do it."

"What kind of magic?"

"Um. Ronove, my brother, said it depended on the person. That it'd work with what they were already good at... um. So I don't know?" Star shrugged. "It'd be fun to find out?"

"Yeah! Okay." Airyn took a deep breath, then smiled. "Let's do it! I can't wait! Does it hurt?"

"A little," Star admitted. "We have to use blood."

Airyn gulped. "I can do it," she said. "A little hurting is okay if it means I can have magic."

"Okay... the first part is the contract. I took this one from Daddy's desk," Star confided, with a little giggle as she unrolled the sheet of paper. "He has a bunch of 'em all locked up, but I got one out..." The demoness squinted at all the long words, some written in arcane runes. "I don't know what it all means but... here." She put it down so Airyn could read it. "There's a blank there to put in what you want."

"Magic, you know that," Airyn said, impatiently.

"Okay." Star fumbled around and came up with a sparkly gel pen, then carefully wrote 'magic' in the blank. "Ooh, the paper warmed up, feel?"

Airyn poked at the edge of the paper. It was, indeed, a little bit warm now. "Neat!"

"Okay... and then we both sign it... but we have to do it in blood."

Airyn made a face. "Ew! How do we do that?"

"That's what the pin is for." Star held up the pin. "p***k your finger... um. No, not your left hand. Your right hand. You have to do it with the hand you don't use."

"Why?" Airyn looked dubiously at the sharp pin.

"I dunno. It's the rules. Just... poke yourself so you bleed a little, and write your name on the bottom..." Star held the pin point-up, straight, for Airyn.

The girl thought for a moment, then reached out with the pointer finger on her right hand and winced as the pin pierced her. "Ow... ooh." The blood beaded on her skin. "And write with it?"

"Yeah."

Airyn carefully brought the finger down and wrote her name. The blood smeared awkwardly, and the fact that she was writing with her off-hand didn't help, but the final result was something that was basically her name, even if it wasn't very neat. "Okay."

"Now I do it." Star winced too as she poked herself, then followed suit. The instant both names were complete, the contract glowed brightly, a flash of red, before subsiding, all the text shining with a red sheen.

"Whoa." Airyn stared at it. "Is that all?"

"Nope. Now we finish it..." Star put the pin back in the box and picked up the knife. "We need more blood."

"Ooh... um. How much more?"

"We have to cut our wrists and hold them together tightly, so the blood mixes... then say some special words. Then the pact will be made," Star said. "Ready?"

"Y-yeah," Airyn replied, nervously, and offered Star her right wrist. She flinched visibly as the demoness made a shallow slice across the inside of her wrist, making her bleed at once. "Hurry..."

Star quickly drew the knife over her left wrist, and the blood began to overflow at the edges of the cut. "Okay, put them together... mine on top..."

"It hurts," Airyn whimpered as Star pressed their stinging, bleeding wrists together. "Is it almost done?"

"Yeah. We gotta say some words, and then... I guess it's done, and I brought bandaids so it'll be okay," Star said, trying to be reassuring. "Okay. You go first. You say... 'I, Airyn, enter into a soul pact with the demon Astarte Baphomet for the sake of power, bound by blood and deeper than blood, to hold until our souls perish.'"

"I, Airyn, enter into a soul pact with the demon Astarte Baphomet for the sake of power, bound by b-blood and deeper than blood, to hold until our souls p-perish," Airyn repeated, haltingly. "Ow!" Her cut warmed and stung sharply, as did the p***k on her finger. The contract glowed, pulsing once.

"And I, Astarte Baphomet, accept the pact offering of this human Airyn, bound by blood and deeper then blood, to hold until our souls perish-"

As soon as Star finished, there was a sudden, blinding flash of light - and pain, more intense than anything Airyn had ever known, both in her wounded wrist and somewhere deep inside. She screamed, and heard Star screaming too as light burst around them, and was relieved when unconciousness rushed up to grab them both.

The last thing either of them were aware of was a sudden bright light, and distant, frantic voices.

"Airyn? Star! STAR!"

"Oh, hells..."

"STAR!"

Aftermath

Ugh...

Airyn ached... everywhere, but expecially her right hand, which was throbbing painfully with every heartbeat. She felt tired, which was weird... because wasn't she just waking up?

She opened her eyes, and saw an unfamiliar ceiling, neither the woven branches of her own room nor the glowy star-speckled ceiling in Star's room. Where...

"I think she's awake," came a quiet voice - Star's mom?

"Thank goodness," and that frantic voice was definitely familiar. Airyn tried to turn towards it, but everything hurt.

"Dad...?"

"Airyn..." Her father's voice was stilted, shifting between lots of emotions at once. Relief, and... anger? Why would Daddy be angry?

"What... what happened?" She tried to sit up, but a hand touched her shoulder and pushed her lightly back down.

"No. Rest," Star's mother said firmly. "You may speak, but don't try to move."

"What..." Airyn swallowed, hard. Everything had been going fine, she was going to get magic, real magic... and then it had hurt, bad, and now she couldn't move and everyone sounded so angry...

Tears rushed up, and overflowed.

Star's mother sighed. "Poor thing." She glanced at Riven. "I need to go check on my daughter - if Airyn is awake, chances are Astarte is as well. Please, do not let her move."

"I won't," Riven promised. Footsteps indicated Star's mom had left, and Airyn looked blankly at the boring white ceiling. There was a long silence.

"Airyn," Riven said, finally.

"Daddy?"

"Do you... are you aware..." Her father seemed to be struggling with his words. "Do you... really realize... what you and Star have done?"

"We made a p-promise... and I'm going to get m-magic... my very own..."

Riven sighed. "It's a little bit more... complicated than that."

"Where's Star? Where'm I?"

"Star is in her room; you're in her brother Ronove's old room. No, don't try and get up," Riven said warningly as Airyn shifted a little. "Stay down. You need to go back to sleep."

"Why?" Airyn began, then yawned hugely. "Ooh..."

"Because it's late. Okay?" Her father sounded very tired.

"'Kay," Airyn mumbled, and let herself drift away, feeling deeply confused by the whole thing.

Reckoning

Airyn sat quietly in the chair, feeling very uncomfortable. The adults were quiet and solemn, especially Star's mom and dad. Her own father was there in the background, his brow furrowed in concern, watching and waiting quietly.

Star was sitting on a chair next to her. Neither of them looked at the other, but kept their gazes fixed firmly on their shoes. Their shame and guilt was absolute.

Finally, Star's mother came over to the two girls, shaking her head. "Well then. Let us see if this... thing... has been successfully averted." The demoness reached for both bandaged hands, and carefully peeled away the gauze.

There was another long moment of silence, and Airyn was afraid to look. Star's dad said a bad word, under his breath, and Star's mom sighed long and low. "The pact has been forged," the demoness said, with a growl of exasperation.

Airyn's heart jumped - so it worked, she could have magic! - but just as quickly plunged as she looked up at three very stern grown-ups. The look on her father's face made her want to cry.

"What... what does that mean, for right now?" Riven said, quietly.

Star's dad shook his head. "For now? They are children. The price does not demand payment so soon as all that. But there will be a price."

The adults drew in towards each other, into a huddle, and began talking in low voices that Airyn couldn't make out. After a few moments, she worked up the courage to look at her right wrist. There, snaking across her skin, was a twirl of red like a bracelet that circled all the way around her wrist, covering the scab from where Star had cut her.

She turned to look mutely at the demon child, and Star held out her own left wrist, which bore an identical red marking, though it looked less startling on Star's darker skin.

"We match," Star whispered, and allowed herself a quiet, quick giggle.

"Sisters," Airyn whispered back, but the knot of talking grown-ups twitched as though they might have heard, and the two girls quickly returned to staring at their shoes.

Retribution

Airyn flopped on her bed, and rolled around, bored to bits. She'd been taken her out of school for that entire week, to give her time to recover from the shock of the soul pact and, hopefully, so that they could find out what had happened because of it. Normally, a week off of school would have been wonderful, but Airyn had also been grounded. Solidly.

"I'm sooooo bored!" she whined, to nothing in particular, for the umpteenth time. Her dad was in the Spirit Realm, but Biome was watching her as firmly as any parent. A few hours earlier, Airyn had made a screaming fit at Biome; the twin dragons had been unmoved by her pleas to let her call Star and so the girl had worked herself up into a full-scale tantrum, to no avail.

"Chrt?"

"What?" Airyn grumbled, rolling on the bed so she could see her door. There was a fluff of purple fur half-under it.

"Cht! Chrrrr," Dillin said, the tiny kiri squirming in under the door with ease. He hopped quickly across the floor and managed to scrabble up onto the bed by hooking his claws into the bedspread, then perched himself on one bedpost, ears flicking back and forth. "Chrrrrrrrr?"

"I'm bored!" Airyn repeated, sighing and flopping back onto her back, staring at the intertwined branches that made up the ceiling. "Biome-butt won't let me do ANYthing." Nevermind that her father had set the rule; with how hurt her father had been she knew she couldn't be mad at him... but Biome, cold and implacable, was a very easy scapegoat.

"Chrrrrt." Dillin hopped off the bedpost and padded down to rest by Airyn's right hand, nosing with concern at her wrist. "Cht?"

"It doesn't hurt anymore," Airyn sighed, holding her wrist up so she too could look at it. The cut Star had made had faded to a bumpy white line of scar tissue; the nurse had said it would probably leave a small scar, but nothing serious. Much more interesting to her was the mark of the pact that encircled that wrist now, still livid red, with a pattern of interlocking diamonds. It was all pointy and prickly, very different from the other soft markings that were naturally present on Airyn's skin. The difference was jarring, somehow.

It made her nervous, and she turned away from it, putting her hand back down on the bed, narrowly missing Dillin. The kiri scooted back, then fluffed out his tail-tuft and proceeded to chew Airyn out with a series of chattering squeaks for her carelessness.

"Yeah, go ahead, everyone else is," Airyn grumbled, stuffing her face into her pillow. All of this, and the guilt she felt and the pain and regret in Star's eyes, the last time they'd seen each other... and where was the magic?

There was nothing magic about this. Nothing.

Redemption

Airyn doodled idly on one of her coloring books, refusing to stay within the lines, bored stiff. Third day of being in her room - and dad hardly talked to her. It was awkward, and miserable, and while she knew her dad didn't hate her or anything... it was as though he didn't know what to do with her. Her mom's tree was more talkative, almost!

So she doodled, and pushed on the paper a little too hard and ripped it, and all in all got so annoyed at it, and how things had turned out, and how she didn't seem to have gotten anything but people being mad at her out of this - no magic of any kind, it seemed! - and thus didn't notice when the door behind her creaked open.

"Airyn?"

She jumped, the crayon skidding across the page, then turned. "D-dad?"

To her surprise, the look on his face was gentler than she'd seen in days - no more the constant pain and odd blankness. He moved and coiled his tail down to sit next to her, then put one arm around her and pulled her close. "Airyn, I'm sorry..."

"Dad..." She leaned against him. He smelled like odd mist, almost baby powder, the scent she'd come to learn came from his Spirit Realm. "I... I'm sorry too..."

"No. I know you're sorry. But I... I haven't been doing what I should for you. I admit it, I don't know how to handle what you and Star did..."

"I don't either!" Airyn burst out. "And I was s'posed to get magic too, and I didn't get anything but... but..." She sniffled.

"Sprout, I know, but I'm not going to let not knowing paralyze me any more. Or you. We're going to find out what this did, and... go from there, and hope that your mother doesn't kill us both when she gets back!" Her father glanced out the window, where the blue berries and green leaves of Ghlyssa's tree were clearly visible. "Okay?"

Airyn smiled, and reached up one hand to wipe the welling tears from her eyes. "O-okay."

Realization

The doctor's name was Dr. Caryn Mephisto, and she was mostly human - but with a demon tail, kind of like Star's. "My father was a halfblood, and he married a human, so I really don't have much in the way of pure demon blood - but it's enough to give me a peculiar sensitivity to the arcane, especially regarding demonic taint. You came to the right place," she had said when they arrived, reassuringly. She'd led Airyn in to her office and sat her down on a comfortable couch, and asked her many questions.

Airyn's dad was watching her, nervously, and Airyn was just as anxious as Riven seemed to be. Dr. Mephisto carefully examined the red seal on Airyn's right wrist. "And this is where the major cut for the pact blood was made, yes?"

"Yeah," Airyn said, quietly, feeling another little squirm of guilt.

"Hm... well, power from a soul-pact tends to develop in areas where the mortal is already proficient. In one already posessing power, it increases or intensifies what ability they already have... but you have no magic naturally..." Dr. Mephisto looked thoughtful, while Airyn tried to process all the big words. She wasn't sure what they meant... but the doctor interrupted her thoughts. "Airyn, what are you good at?"

Now that, she understood. "Um." Airyn thought hard. "Reading... drawing... passing notes in school!" She giggled a little.

"Hm. Reading is passive, passing notes is... hm, not grand enough to attract power." Dr. Mephisto smiled. "So let's try drawing." She walked over to her desk and got out a pad of paper and a pencil, then handed them to Airyn. "Can you draw me something? A butterfly, let's say."

"Okay." Airyn moved so she was comfortable, and began to draw, the doctor watching her closely. She was nervous at first, but when everything seemed normal, she relaxed - and after a few minutes Airyn presented Dr. Mephisto with a finished butterfly and nothing had happened.

"That's quite good!" the doctor praised. "But... hm. It seems likely, but..." She frowned... then looked thoughtful again. "Can you try that again, but with your right hand?"

Airyn made a face. "It won't look as pretty, though."

"Try it, please?"

"Okay..." Airyn switched the pencil into her other hand, and began to draw - and as she did, the pact seal suddenly began to glow, and feel warm.

Airyn faltered, staring, and the glow died down. "No, keep going," Dr. Mephisto encouraged, and Airyn swallowed hard, then continued.

The glow increased to a warm, pleasant hue and steadied there as Airyn kept drawing. She wanted to stop and watch, but Dr. Mephisto's knowing look urged her on, even though her wrist felt uncomfortably warm... but with concentration, she finished drawing the wobbly, lopsided butterfly.

And then, as she put her pencil down... something moved.

Airyn stared as the butterfly she'd drawn flapped its wings, along the plane of the paper at first, but then moved free of it, fanning once, twice, then lifting itself upwards to hover in front of her face. She stared at it in total shock, this little white creature edged in graphite gray.

"Excellent! A manifestation called into being by your artistry! It should obey your commands, Airyn - please, direct it to do something?" Dr. Mephisto made a note on her notepad.

"Um. Butterfly... go land on my dad's head!" Airyn said, and instantly the butterfly bobbed towards Riven and landed on top of his head, its wings fanning lightly up and down.

"Well done! And... there should also be a dismissal cue. Right now it's drawing on your energy." Dr. Mephisto pointed at the pact seal, and Airyn realized it was still glowing lightly. "You can't let it hang around forever or it will drain you. A classic dismissal is 'you have done your work, be at rest'. Tell it that, okay?"

"Yes, ma'am... um. You have done your work, butterfly - be at rest!"

Instantly, the thing vanished, but in little pieces - like it was being erased. At the same time, the faint warmth remaning around the pact seal died away.

Magic. I... I just did... magic.....

And Airyn was suddenly beaming, radiant, joy written across her face.

"Well. That's that, then. Manifestations called into being through drawing. It will be interesting to see your range and your limits, Airyn - if I am allowed?" Dr. Mephisto nodded at her dad.

"Um. Oh. Yes... yes, I think that would be a good idea," Riven replied, with a nod of his own.

"My own magic," Airyn whispered, her heart singing with the first real joy she'd felt since that fateful night. She could hardly wait to show Star!

Experimentation

Riven was chopping up a carrot for stew when he caught it out of the corner of his eye - a small bright shape swooping around the far side of the kitchen. He put down the knife with a sigh and drifted over, watching for a moment before lunging at the fluttering bit of paper, stained with color.

"Got you!" he grunted as he pinned it against the wall, then pinched it with care between two fingers. The construct - a small bird, he realized, drawn in marker and peeled neatly off the paper - struggled, but he had a good enough grip that it couldn't get away.

Shaking his head, the spirit Fa'e headed down the hall to knock on Airyn's room. "I think you forgot something," he said, then opened it...

... and a torrent of constructs poured out, birds and butterflies, dragonflies and fireflies, even a few tiny dragons that wafted heatless, inky flames. In his surprise, Riven lost his grip on the bird he'd caught and it floated quickly into the wheeling throng.

"AIRYN!"

She peeked out from under the bed, her face oddly lit from the pulsing glow of the pact seal on her wrist - it was bright as fire from all the power expended in keeping that many constructs active at once.

"Um..." she stammered.

"Call. Them. Off. Now."

"I just wanted to see how many I could do at once!" she said, and Riven realized she was trembling from the drain of it.

"Call them off!" Riven repeated, his brow furrowing in concern. He coiled his tail and sank down next to her, helping her out from under the bed. "You don't need to stretch yourself this way!"

"Ngh..." Airyn cringed, then stared out at the swirl of paper creatures in the hallway. "Y-you have done your work... be at rest!"

There was a sudden snap that was almost audible as the power recoiled away from the suddenly lifeless constructs, and Airyn jerked as though she'd been struck, her eyes wide. Then she slumped.

"Owwww..."

"Backlash... Dr. Mephisto warned me about that," Riven said with a sigh, scooping his daughter up and laying her down on the bed. "I'll go make that special tea she recommended."

Airyn made a face. "That stuff tastes... bad..."

"No buts." And Riven floated back to the kitchen for the kettle, frowning slightly as he moved over the fallen flock, laying crumpled on the hallway floor.

Reunion

"Star!" Airyn called out, beaming, waving wildly from her door at the two approaching figures. Much to her delight, the parents had agreed to lessen the grounding on that final Sunday before school... secure in the knowledge that if the girls didn't get to meet and talk before classes started, they'd do it during class.

"I missed you!" the young demoness said as she ran up and stood outside the door for a moment, breathing hard, then lunged forward and nearly knocked Airyn over with a flying-leap hug.

Paimon and Riven smiled in spite of themselves, and ushered both girls into the house. "Okay, Airyn - you can show Paimon and Star what you can do, but I don't want you overextending yourself, got it?" the spirit Fa'e said, firmly.

"Okay!" Airyn was grinning from ear to ear as she pulled out her sketchpad and a crayon from under the coffee table. "Look, look!"

The sketch of a butterfly took shape quickly, if a little messily, under her right hand - though she had to pause when she realized that Star's own pact seal was glowing too, along with her own. She gave the demon girl a questioning, anxious look.

Star smiled back, a little sadly. "I knew you found magic. I could feel it... some of the power comes through me... so I always know, whenever you use it."

Airyn stopped drawing and looked nervously at her friend. "Does it hurt you?"

"No!" The demoness shook her hair, the curled pigtails swaying violently with the movement. "It just feels a little weird, but it doesn't hurt. Keep going! I want to see what happens!" She leaned forward and looked avidly at Airyn's paper.

Airyn nodded and turned back to the sketch - and when she was done, the butterfly peeled itself off the paper and fluttered around as both girls' pact seals glowed lightly on their wrists.

Star tilted her head to follow the butterfly's awkward flight; one of the wings was bigger than the other, so it moved in an odd, lopsided motion. "Wow! A construct... right?" She looked at her father for confirmation.

Paimon nodded. "Yes."

"Wow! That's amazing, Airyn!"

Airyn beamed.

Revenge

For once in her life, Airyn couldn't wait for Renswell to catch up to her after school. She'd heard from Pina, one of the other girls in the class, that the mage boy had decided he had been responsible for Airyn's week-long absence... that she'd run away from him for a week after being bullied.

So Airyn lingered on the edge of the playground, making small experiments - doodling in the sand with a stick, using her left hand. Sure enough, gravel-dripping constructs erupted from the sandbox whenever she finished a drawing... but she dismissed them all when she saw the door open and Renswell saunter out, and scowled at the cruel glee on his face when he spotted her.

"Finally came back, huh? Stupid mundane scared of her betters?" the boy jeered at her.

"It wasn't because of YOU," Airyn said, firmly.

The boy just smirked, and flicked a finger at her - Airyn quickly jumped to the left, and the sand plowed up where she had been. If she hadn't moved, she'd have been knocked to the ground. She grabbed her stick and ran along the playground, drawing a line... a shape... a big, big shape.

Renswell watched her, confused by her odd movements.

When she was almost done, ready for the last tooth that would complete the drawing, she gave Renswell her sweetest smile. "Renswell?"

"What, stupid?"

"Don't ever call me mundane again," Airyn said, wickedly, and finished the last stroke.

The sand burst upwards and the pact seal pulsed as bright as fire, the huge alligator she'd drawn tearing itself loose from the ground, dripping grains everywhere. It wasn't anywhere near as long-lasting as paper and pen constructs, but it was much, much bigger... and much, much scarier.

Renswell stumbled backwards, fear suddenly written on his face. "Wh-what..."

"Bite him!" Airyn ordered, and the construct swung to face Renswell, the toothy jaws opening wide, drooling sand.

The boy screamed, and ran, with the alligator trundling after him.

And Airyn laughed and laughed.

Error
one week later

Airyn sat in the principal's office, looking fixedly at the floor. She'd gotten used to studying the floor lately, it seemed - and now it was Friday and her dad had been called in to the office. He was sitting in front of the principal's desk, his tail coiled tightly around one chair leg... which wasn't a good sign. He only did that when he was nervous or angry, or both.

"Over the last week, Airyn has been simply unmanagable," the principal was saying, the old centaur's expression grim and serious. "I understand she has come into a new power... but her usage of it has been simply unacceptable."

"I assume you've had talks like this with the boy Renswell's parents?" Riven said, his tone weary.

The principal nodded, and rubbed at his temples. "Of course. The boy is a nuisance, but the fact remains that his family is a prime funder of this institution... and Barton Primary simply cannot function without their support... which they will not offer if the boy is expelled."

Her father scowled. "That hardly seems fair."

"We've punished him every other way possible. It's... good that your daughter can, hm, defend herself... but she's been turning the tables far too much. Showing off. Sending constructs after the boy at every moment. Making flocks of... things... flit across the room whenever the teacher's back is turned..."

Riven's frown deepend, and Airyn dropped her glance to look more fixedly at the carpet than she had before. It was true... but... she wanted to prove herself... prove that she had magic. She was just as good as any of them!

"Airyn has been an exemplary student prior to this event; her grades are good and her artistic talent is exceptional... the magic element notwithstanding, of course. But now, I feel she may need special handling for her unique circumstance," the principal went on.

"What would you suggest?" Riven said, sounding tired. Airyn bit her lip.

"You are taking her to a counsellor for magic issues, yes? She may have some ideas. But it may well be that the bullying she suffered, and her current desire to stand out... in my opinion, it might be best to break the cycle entirely." The principal pulled out a sheaf of papers from one desk drawer, and handed them to Riven. "There are many other fine educational institutions in this area that you might want to look into."

"Change schools?"

Airyn's heart dropped into her stomach. Leave Star?! No...

She bit her lip again, harder this time, and tried not to cry.

Ruminations

Airyn tried to ignore her dad as she leaned against her mother's tree and doodled - with her left hand, not her right. She wasn't in the mood for magic right now.

Riven was inside the house, looking at all the brochures and pamphlets that the principal had given him... the stupid pieces of paper that talked about other schools and other places. And even with Renswell and the other kids that she'd made mad that week - even quiet Pina had yelled at her to stop showing off during recess - she didn't want to leave... because then she'd have to leave Star...

She felt miserable. Part of her wished she'd never done the soul pact with Star, even if the magic was cool. It seemed like nothing but trouble had happened, with more on the way later on if what Star's mom and dad said was true.

"I miss you, Mommy," Airyn said, pressing her cheek into the tree's bark and trying to pretend it was her mother as she remembered her. It had been such a long time... it was hard to think of Ghlyssa as having been what she was in their photo album. There was a very big gap now that was only pictures of Riven and Airyn, or Airyn alone...

"Airyn?"

She jumped, and looked up. Her dad was floating in the doorway with a smile on his face.

"What?" she mumbled.

"We're going to Dr. Mephisto's office in an hour, don't forget - but she said on the phone she could recommend a school for you."

"Oh." That didn't matter, and Airyn turned away.

"And I talked to Paimon..."

Airyn turned around again, so fast that her braids slapped her in the face.

"Whatdidhesay?" The question wasn't so much a sentence as one long, run-together word, frantically blurted out.

"He said that because of the nature of the pact, it would be a good idea to keep you and Star close... and that he'd been considering the same thing. So wherever you go, Star will follow. Is that okay with you?"

"YES!" Airyn jumped up and lunged for her father, catching him in a hug around his waist, mood changed in an instant. "Yes, yes, YES!"

"I thought it would be," Riven said, amused.

Revelation

Dr. Mephisto looked thoughtfully over the brochures Riven had produced, after narrowing down the school choices away from those that were most expensive or solely for members of a certain species. Religious academies were right out too, as there weren't many who would take in a demon.

Airyn swung her feet back and forth on the edge of the couch as she watched her father and the doctor examine the remaining choices. They'd already had their meeting, which involved Airyn repeating her stunt of keeping as many constructs as possible in the air at once; the max seemed to be between 15 to 25, depending on the size. Dr. Mephisto had nodded and warned Airyn to be careful, because beyond backlash there was also 'overtax', and that would knock her out for several days.

"Hmm." Dr. Mephisto looked up, then, and Airyn and Riven both stared at her. She laughed. "Goodness, you'd think I was a rare beastie."

"Sorry," Riven apologized. "We're just... rather curious what you're going to say."

"Well, enough suspense! Hm..." Dr. Mephisto fanned the pamphlets out in front of her again. "Blackthorn Grove is a renowed black magic school, but it may be too intense for Airyn. Still, if she thinks she can handle it, I could get her at least an entry interview with my recommendation..."

"Is that your first choice?" Riven asked. Airyn merely kept listening intently, squirming a bit.

"No, actually... my first choice, considering what I know of Airyn, is actually Westchase Academy." Dr. Mephisto pushed one pamplet towards Riven. "It's a more mundane school, and it doesn't even teach magic... it has a more normalized population."

"Then why?" Airyn blurted out.

"Because what I think you need most right now is grounding. You can easily get tutoring in magic from me or another tutor if you so choose... but what Westchase should give you is solid academics and balance in your life. At Barton Primary there was a skew towards favoring the magical elements. Now that you have power, you need to learn how to use it with respect to those who don't have it - or would you like to end up like Renswell?" She raised one eyebrow.

"No," Airyn said, immediately, and felt guilty. "But..."

"What you were doing at school leads easily to what he was doing, believe it or not," Dr. Mephisto went on. "Now, Westchase is a good, solid school. It is expensive, but-" She held up one finger as Riven visibly drooped. "But Airyn should be a shoo-in for an artistic scholarship, and from what you've said about Astarte it shouldn't be a problem."

Riven nodded; Star's father was quite the businessman and indeed had no shortage of funds. "And where is it located?"

"Outside of Durem. Close enough so that Airyn can easily live at home, though there are boarding dormitories if you'd rather that..."

"She'll live at home," Riven said immediately.

"Very well. Do you want to hear the other options?" Dr. Mephisto said.

Riven hesitated, then turned to Airyn. "What do you think, Sprout?"

"Um... that sounds okay," Airyn said, tired and wanting to get out of the office now more than anything else. The discussion was kinda boring, even if it was about her future.

"Very well, then... I'll write out a letter of recommendation, and I'd recommend getting one from Airyn's teachers as well. Preferably her art instructor, if the classes are separate by subject."

Riven nodded, made as if to get up, then paused. "Oh, and there was one other thing I wanted to ask you about, doctor."

"What's that?"

"An... unrelated issue." Riven removed something from his pocket and held it out to her - a blue crystal on a silver cord. "I found this a while ago, and was informed that it was 'waiting for me'. I was wondering if you could tell me anything about it?"

"Hm..." Dr. Mephisto took the crystal and examined it closely; Airyn watched her father's tail abruptly wrap around the chair leg again, as it did when he was agitated about something. "There is power here... and it's strong," she said, with some surprise. "But it's... wounded. It's not easy to tell, and artifact reading is not my specialty. You might want to take it to someone who specializes in analyzing items."

Riven was visibly relieved when the doctor gave him the jewel back. "Hm. Well... thank you. Is that all for today?"

"I believe so, unless you have anything else to add."

"No, I think we're good. Ready, Airyn?"

"Yes," Airyn said, with relief, and jumped down.

Friend in the Mirror

Britain
It was a considerably longer trek to Riven's house than Rio had imagined. When he had spontaneously decided to go and visit his friend, he had thought of it as a light journey; now he was wishing he'd had Galatyne drop him off a bit closer. The Doppelgaenger was feeling a bit better about letting him go places on his own, and had gone to run errands...for some time Rio thought he was completely lost!

After a while, however, he came face to face with the forest house. It was as if he blinked and there it was! It was the sort of thing that happened in the forest, he knew, but it still took him by surprise. The entire place felt peaceful to him...if a bit odd.

Stepping up to what he hoped was the front door, the young Fa'e knocked lightly. He had plenty of time to doubt himself, wonder if he should have called ahead, or consider walking away before anyone responded; surely he had better manners than this. But it was Riven, and he was willing to chance the awkwardness to see him and Miss Airyn again.

Sosiqui
The door creaked open after a moment - but what greeted Rionne was not Airyn or Riven, but Biome. The twin dragons, reared up on their hind legs, regarded the Fa'e with implacable, unreadable green eyes.

"Who areare you?" they asked, finally.

"Who is it?" came a familiar voice a few seconds after, and Airyn peeped her head out of the kitchen. When she realized it was Rionne, her mouth formed a round O of surprise for a moment before a wild blush suffused her face, and she ducked back out of sight.

For a moment, as Biome continued to stare at Rionne, there was a flurry of activity from inside the kitchen. Something fell over with a clang, there was more rustling and the sink went on, then off... but at the end, Airyn came out, blushing, her hair pulled back and slicked into place with water, smiling brightly. "It's okay, Biome, he's one of Daddy's friends. And my friend?" she added, shyly glancing at Rio.

Britain
All of his trepidation dissolved when Airyn came to the door- though the other creature/s were QUITE intimidating neough to make up for it. How could he stay uneasy with the little girl nearby? She was too adorable for him to remember being uneasy.

He gave her a small bow, eyes dancing as he looked away from Biome. "Of course, Lady Airyn," he teased, voice warm. He seemed much less...well, half-dead than he'd been when he first met her, even if he did still wear the veil. "I hope I am not disturbing you on this lovely afternoon...?"

Sosiqui
"No!" Airyn squeaked. "Not at all! Um. Dad's out for a walk right now... Mommy's here though, and Biome... get DOWN, Biome!" she ordered, putting her hands on her hips and glaring at the twin dragons.

After a moment, Biome lowered themselves out of Rionne's way and lumbered off into the kitchen, without so much as a word. Airyn shook her head. "Sorry. Daddy told them to watch me and the house and Mommy. I'm safe with them here, but... they're kinda... intense?" She blushed again, then brightened. "Oh! Do you want to see... something cool?" she added, with a nervous smile. "Something I, um, learned how to do? Y-you liked my art before..."

Britain
Rio's thoughtful eyes were on Biome; they were fascinating, and he seemed to remember something like them in Britain's house. A good protector, at least, and it made him feel better that Riven had left them with Airyn. He imagined her mother could protect her well enough, however.

"Certainly," was his reply, and he tucked dark hair back behind his pointed ears. "I still have the pictures you gave me. I should give my greetings to your mother, however, as a guest in her home; I do not believe I've met her before."

Sosiqui
"Okay - I'm not sure if she can here you, but c'mon out..." Airyn skipped to the front door and opened it, then led Rionne out to Ghlyssa's tree. It was small compared to the forest around it, but stately, with rich green leaves and blue berries that had never fallen, not even in winter.

Airyn placed one hand on the tree's bark, with obvious affection. "Hi, Mommy... I don't know if you can hear me, but my friend Rionne is here to say hi to you too," she informed the tree. Looking back up at Rio, she added, "Mommy used to walk around like you and me, but a long time ago she decided she had to be a tree for a while..." A wistful expression came over her face. "I miss her..."

Britain
Dear Gods.

Rio wasn't particularly religious- given the fact that he seemed to KNOW several of the 'beings' that people worshipped, and his recent encounter with Ra- but the thought ran blindly across his mind as he looked at the tree. Airyn's little hand on the bark was so loving that it hurt his heart to see...the poor child! How long had her mother been like this...?

Still, it would do no one good for him to exclaim in horror or make her feel bad about the situation. That decided, he took hold of himself and leaned over to whisper to the little girl.

"You should give a lady's name when you introduce her to a gentleman, Lady Airyn." ^_~

Sosiqui
"Oh!" Airyn turned beet-red immediately, and quickly dropped an awkward curtsey. "Um. Mother, this is Rionne - Rionne, this is my mother, Ghlyssa...?" Her voice turned hopeful at the end, pleading for a reply.

But none came, of course, except the wind in the branches, and Airyn's face fell - just for a moment, before her soft smile was back. "I'm sure she'd be happy to meet you..." She shuffled her feet.

Britain
Ignoring the lack of reply, Rio swept the tree a graceful bow- as if he were still a prince in some far-away Court. "It is a pleasure to meet you, Lady Ghlyssa," he stated formally, satin hair falling over his shoulder. "If you will please excuse us, I believe Lady Airyn has something she would like to show me. I do hope we will speak again some other time."

He straightened, and offered a hand to the little girl with a smile that was still evident even behind the filmy grey guaze over his features. "Shall we go back inside?"

Sosiqui
"S-sure..." There were butterflies in Airyn's stomach for sure now. What would Rionne think of her magic? Would he like it? She shyly took his hand and led him back inside, trying her best to act like a Big Girl instead of a little kid. But it was so hard, he was so grand and so polite and knew so much that she didn't...

"Sit down. Um, please?" she said, quickly, indicating the couch in the living room, before darting into her own bedroom and retrieving her best and biggest sketch paper and pencil. While in her room, she quickly checked the mirror again and took a moment to try and wrestle her hair into something somewhat neater. Still, her hair took after her father's, and it refused to behave in any special way despite the very special occasion.

Exasperated, Airyn did what she could as fast as she could, and zipped back out to sit, flushed, in front of Rio on the edge of the coffee table. "I learned something new," she said, breathless with anxiety.

Britain
Rio had seated himself patiently, eyes focused in the distance as he considered the issue of Airyn's mother. The subject struck a harsh chord with him, as well- he hadn't been able to contact Smoke since she returned. I miss my mother, as well.

When Airyn returned, he did his best to put the thoughts aside and give her all of his attention. Leaning forward curiously, he gave the girl a wide gesture, indicating that he was listening. "Please, show me," he told her, ears flicking slightly with curiosity. It must be something quite amazing, for Airyn to be so worked up over it!

Sosiqui
Airyn beamed and pushed up her right sleeve with somewhat of a flourish, before scooting down to sit on the floor, across the table from where Rionne sat. "Watch this!"

She picked up her pencil, and began to draw. The lines were more wobbly than with her left hand, of course, but as she began the pact seal around her wrist began to glow.

Airyn had chosen a butterfly at first; they were easy to draw and simple to make work properly, since their wings were paper-flat anyway. When she was done, the butterfly detatched itself from the paper and flapped in confused circles over the table. Airyn looked up at Rio, anxious for approval.

Britain
Snow white eyes flicked first to the glowing mark, recognizing it instinctively (or perhaps from too much association with Astaroth) as something bad. He opened his mouth to ask about it, but was then stolen away from the subject by the paper butterfly now flitting around the table. For a long moment he stared at it, blinking, as if trying to figure it out. Wonder was victorious over scientific theory, however, and he reached up carefully to try and touch it.

"Amazing, little Lady," he murmured, and couldn't help but smile. "Simply amazing! you've created life with simply a pencil and paper- what an incredible skill to have!"

Sosiqui
Airyn flushed with pleasure... but her smiled turned a little sad and she shook her head at Rio's last sentence. "It's not life... it's just a construct. It'll stop moving when I tell it to, it can't move around forever or it'll suck out too much power... but isn't it cool?!"

The butterfly was white as the paper that birthed it, with graphite lines delineating the edges and markings. It fluttered and landed on Rio's outstretched fingers, the pencil-line legs leaving small gray dots on his finger as they touched. With every movement the butterfly made, the pact seal on Airyn's wrist pulsed lightly.

Britain
"Life is in the eyes of the beholder," Rio told her staunchly, and brought the butterfly carefully close so he could investigate. The little graphite marks were dark on his very pale skin, but he was more interested in studying the actual creature itself. Construct or no, it moved and flew on it's own- which couldn't have been easy, for a child with 'no magic.'

"I am very impressed," he said then, offering the pretty thing out to her. "Is it anything you draw? A type of spell, or a special paper...? I've never seen anything like it." He knew it stemmed from that mark, but he didn't want to frighten her into hiding it. He'd MUCH rather know the story.

Sosiqui
"Um... it's only if I draw with this hand." Airyn pointed to the faint glow of the pact seal on her right wrist. "I'm left-handed, so when I write stuff or draw normally it doesn't do anything... just with this one..."

She hesitated. What would Rionne think of how the power came to be? But he'd asked, and... she couldn't not tell him. "Um. My best friend is a demon, and... we made a pact..." She squirmed. "A lot of people got mad. You're not mad, are you?"

Britain
Oh dear. Rio leaned back in his seat to consider her words, knowing well that this must be an incredible headache to her poor father. "I believe I need more information," he replied slowly, clasping fingers together around one knee. "Your friend is a demon, and you've made some sort of bargain that gives you this magic...but surely there was a price to be paid?"

Sosiqui
Airyn bit her lip and looked down. "That's what Star's mommy and daddy said." Her voice was quiet and guilty. "But they said it wouldn't happen yet... I don't know what it is, Star doesn't either, but... I'm kinda scared," she admitted. "But she was just trying to help me... this boy at school was bullying me because I was mundane and I wanted magic so much...."

The butterfly flitted off of Rio and moved to float towards the window; Airyn looked up suddenly. "Be at rest!" she ordered. Immediately, the pact seal stopped glowing and the paper stiffened, now ordinary, drifting down to the floor.

Britain
"So you can control them," he murmured, and sighed. What a heavy weight for her to carry. He stood and moved to kneel next to her chair, taking her right hand gently to examine the markings. Serious business, this was, and he could tell the dark cloud still lingered.

He couldn't exactly fault her, considering his own choices. "I am not angry with you, Lady Airyn," he replied slowly, consideriing his words before they left his lips. "I have someone very dear to me who is a demon, as well. Many have told me that involving myself with Astaroth is a bad idea, and I have been hurt by the decision...but I would not change it for the world."

He looked up at her, and touched her nose with one finger. "You have likely laid a hard road for yourself, but I believe you are strong enough to walk it well."

Sosiqui
"I..." Airyn took a deep breath. "Th-thanks," she managed, blushing red as a beet. He was holding her hand! What should she do?!

Fortunately - or perhaps unfortunately - the front door opened just then, and the moment was broken as Riven floated into the house, looking haggard. The spirit Fa'e stopped short as he realized Airyn was not alone, but he relaxed when he realized who it was. "Ah - hello, Rionne," he said, sounding tired.

"He came to visit, so I let him in," Airyn said, defensively.

"It's fine, I trust him," Riven reassured her, and gave the other Fa'e a wry smile. "What's the occasion?"

Britain
"I thought I might visit," Rio replied cautiously, shocked by his friend's appearance. Considering that his position was a little awkward, he rose to his feet and brushed a hand over Airyn's hair. "Would you please forgive me for asking for a few moments alone with your father, Lady Airyn?" He murmured, making sure to meet her eyes so she wouldn't think she'd just been dismissed. "I certainly won't leave without saying my farewells."

Sosiqui
"N-no... that's okay... bye Dad!" Airyn scrambled to her feet, grabbed her sketchbook and pencil, and darted for her room.

When she was gone, Riven let out a sigh and settled down on the couch. "Sorry, Rio - I wasn't expecting visitors and someone just told me something unbelievable. Sei too, actually." He shook his head. "But you're always welcome. I could use someone not a kid to talk to, actually..."

Britain
"From the little I've seen since I arrived, I can see that things have not gone easily for you as of late." The Doppelgaenger shifted to take the seat Airyn had vacated, leaning forward with elbows on his knees. For Riven to look as he did now shook some of Rio's stability.

"That your day has been even more remarkable tells me you are in need of a small, padded room somewhere very quiet. Is there some way I can help...?"

Sosiqui
"Listen?" Riven gave Rio a weary smile. "If you're willing. What I'm worried about right now is this." The Fa'e pointed at the new necklace he was wearing, a bright blue crystal, rounded as if by ocean waves, hanging from a silver cord. "A strange woman who called herself Death has told me that it contains the essence of a child. Worse, Sei was there, Shina and Hoshi's child, and the woman said the same to him about a necklace he had! He's only a child himself..."

Britain
"Shina and Hoshi..." Rio blinked, then smothered a smile at the memory of Astaroth stuck in a certain pregnant angel's body. "It is good to hear that their son is well."

He leaned forward to study the necklace, curious about it, and tilted his head as the light caught it's curves. "Well, certainly WE are miraculous enough in nature that I am surprised by nothing. That it contains the spirit of a child...well, it's certainly what I have come to expect from Gaia. I can think of no better 'guardian,' however. Perhaps Sei's own Guardian will help him with the soul his pendant possesses?"

Sosiqui
"Sei seems well enough, but it seems Shina is gone again... I wish I knew what had happened to her, and to Hoshi. They are... very old friends." Riven shook his head. "Sei, of course, misses them very much. I worry about him. And about this... this thing." The spirit Fa'e made a face. "I stopped at my Guardian's house on the way back here and she laughed in my face, saying now I'd know what it felt like."

Britain
"From what I understand, we were all dumped on our Guardians in much the same way," Rio pointed out dryly. "Well, most of us. It is sad to hear that Shina is gone, and Hoshi...more of a loss for their son." His smile was tight, and he shook his head. "I have only distant memories of both of them; it seems Morion took those with him."

Brushing off the melancholy and sick feeling that came with the thought, he reached up to tuck his hair back behind his ears. They were flat to his head at the moment, having learned much greater mobility in the last few months. "At least this will give you something new to concentrate on," he said gently, knowing the conversation wasn't going to get any easier. "I've been talking to Airyn. Is there...anything else you'd like to talk about? I don't want to reopen old wounds, if you would rather not."

Sosiqui
Riven smiled, sheepishly. "Yeah, I did show up out of nowhere, like my Guardian said. She also said that it seemed like hardly anyone got pregnant any more...?" The spirit Fa'e looked confused; obviously the gist of Sosiqui's statement had flown right over his head.

He leaned back into the couch at the mention of Airyn, and shook his head. "Airyn. Don't get me started on that. She must have told you... I'm sure she did. She has a crush on you, you know," he added, in a quieter whisper lest his daughter hear, his eyes brightening with mischief. "I found a whole page full of your name and hers, with lots of little hearts. What have you been doing with her?" The question was lighthearted, but there was a thread of steel in the middle - just in case.

Britain
"I noticed the worship in her eyes," was Rio's very dry reply, but his eyes were very serious. "You have no worries from me, my friend. She was showing me her magic; she told me what happened. Honestly, you are much calmer than I might have been, if I did not know Astaroth. If there is any way I can use my influence on her to help you guide her safely, I will not hesitate to offer my assistance- though what I really think you ought to do is speak to Astaroth himself. Unfortunately, I will be little help there, for now."

He hesitated. It was quite a personal move, but he was truly worried; he reached for one of Riven's hands and met the older Fa'e's eyes as his voice gentled. "She also...introduced me to her mother. Riven...I am concerned for your health as much as hers."

Sosiqui
"Glee." Riven sighed again. "Somehow you're finding everything that's bothering me, one after the other. She's gone to the Earthkeeper - chasing who she was or is, I'm not sure exactly how it works, but... it's what we do. Since September..." He fiddled with the crystal pendant. "Sometimes I see Airyn looking at family pictures with this desperate look on her face. There's nothing I can do about it." He glanced at the tree, just visible outside the front window. "And that's the problem."

A pause, then, "And don't worry about Airyn. I know you'd never do anything to her. I just hope she never gets the wrong idea, but there's nothing I can do about that, either. Everything is complicated," the Fa'e proclaimed, with a wry smile.

Britain
"Airyn...is a very strong girl. She will msot definitely be as strong as her father," Rio said softly. It was half compliment, half pointed reminder. "If one wants to begin solving a problem, one must begin at the source- which is you, Riven. You are so bound by the things that are making you uneasy that you have nowhere to turn. If you do not take them on as you have faced Chaos' minions, there will not be much left of you when your Lady returns."

His smile turned grim beneath the veil. "Believe me, I will do anything to keep Airyn from being mislead. I have had more than enough broken-hearted maidens for this lifetime. That is one worry you will never have to face."

Sosiqui
"Thank you. I'm sorry, I suppose you're just too charming for her." Riven smiled at Rionne, grateful for his comfort. "I'll manage somehow - I've managed so far. Airyn's going to switch schools to get away from her bullying problem, and whatever price to pay for her power won't come to visit until later, thank goodness." Riven made a face again. That was the last thing he needed, some kind of arcane business knocking on his door. "I was thinking of asking Astaroth about it, actually. Have you seen him lately? I've been so busy with Airyn, the house, and my Spirit Realm duties... that I haven't really done anything except for what I'm supposed to do for a long time."

Britain
"Morion...apparently 'broke up' with Astaroth." The words were brutally painful, when he'd gotten so used to saying them to himself- telling someone else hurt. "So, I am a 'fake' who has been deceiving our dear Hellking all this time. Astar didn't want anything to do with me. I know that right now he is hurt, and probably not thinking very clearly...perhaps when things have settled a bit more, I will try and speak with him again."

It's been over six months, a mutinous voice whispered in the back of his mind. How much time does one require to let things 'settle?' His lips tightened, and he brushed the thought aside. "I believe in him, regardless, and you have never been one to condemn him. I think he would help you. As who he is, what he is, he is very responsible. I would offer to speak to him for you, but- I think that isn't the wisest course of action right now. Leaving a letter with his Guardian will help you reach him; Lady Kali is a wonderful woman."

Whom he missed terribly. Again, thoughts best left alone. "Still, however, that will only solve one of your problems. Riven- have you thought to get someone to help you with any of this? Perhaps someone in the Spirit Realm to help you there, or someone Airyn can stay with for short periods of time so that you have more time on your hands? You need the space to take a deep breath, organize your thoughts, and continue on."

Sosiqui
"Oh... I'm sorry, I didn't know," Riven said, feeling guilty, but because of that he welcomed the turn of conversation. "Airyn's been staying with my Guardian and with her best friend, the little demoness who made the soul-pact with her... so my problem's not time. And before too long I'm going to have a baby to deal with too... a baby. Ghlyssa changed all the diapers, after that one time when I got both legs in one hole, with Airyn." The spirit Fa'e looked vaguely panicked.

"Daaaaaaaaad, don't say embarassing things," Airyn said, aggrieved; the child had come to spy through the doorway. "What about a baby?"

Riven looked even more panicked. "Nothing, Sprout." He prodded Rionne lightly with one elbow so he wouldn't mention it in front of Airyn; he needed to explain it to her alone, with plenty of time.

Britain
"You have a mother for a reason," Rio murmured low to him, smothering a smile. He raised one hand to beckon to his little princess, one ear flicking slightly. "Ah, but we have been spied upon. Come out, Lady Airyn, and join us. Riven tells me you are changing schools...? Perhaps he shall talk to my demon friend for you, and he will be able to assist."

He shifted so that he faced her again, and reached up to remove the veil. The movement had become much more smooth, less fearful- his smile was warm once the silk dropped into his lap. "I will have to come and visit you at school, some afternoon." heart

Sosiqui
Airyn beamed when Rio took the veil off. "Yay! You should not wear that more often. You're much handsomer without it," she added, and blushed again - but she didn't shy away, she stood her ground against the embarassment.

"I'm inclined to agree with my daughter for once," Riven said, some of his high spirits coming back now that Airyn was here, though he wasn't sure if it was actual joy or just the artificial brand he'd gotten so used to wearing for his child's sake. Probably closer to the former than the latter, though.

"I'm gonna try and go to Westchase Academy," Airyn continued, toeing the ground. "It'll teach me, um, important stuff and balance..." She tried to remember what Dr. Mephisto had said, failed, and latched on to what Rio had started with. "You have a demon friend too? They're nicer than people think, huh?"

Britain
"Airyn!" Rio scolded lightly, though it was HARD to hide the laughter in his voice. "A Lady has no need for such violent measures. You should defend yourself, but be above fighting in the schoolyard. It isn't very proper at all, and it will make you look as mannerless as those you fight!"

He leaned back against the chair cushions, ears relaxing enough to flick curiously at any given sound. "It is good, however, that you have some assistance. Dr. Mephisto sounds like a very wise woman." He smiled at Airyn, wondering just how far her amazing abilities would go. "Perhaps someday, you will be able to create entire paintings that move."

Sosiqui
"I'm trying," Airyn mumbled, abashed. "That's what Dr. Mephisto said."

Riven groaned. "Not more things that move, please... I've had more than enough already."

Airyn sighed. "Yes, Daddy..." But from the look in her eye, it was obvious to all that she was goign to try that trick out as soon as she had a free moment, and Riven groaned again, but inwardly this time.

He turned to Rionne. "Can I get you anything? Unfortunately, I can't ask you to dinner, because it's a school night for Airyn and you, my friend, are very distracting..." The spirit Fa'e grinned.

Britain
"Just make sure you use water-based paints, Lady Airyn," Rio teased, and turned his smile to Riven. "No, I should not impose. I simply wanted to visit, and see how you were doing... I confess that I needed time to get away from my own frustrations as well. I am having much better luck with the piano than I am with my own magic."

He made an amusing face at the thought, vaguely like a fairy squished between screen and glass doors. "I am quite happy to preach at others, rather than overcoming my own tedious aggravations!"

Sosiqui
"Piano? You're a musician?" Airyn sparkled at Rionne, finding that intriguing; she couldn't carry a tune in a bucket, annoyingly enough.

"Goodness, he's never going to come back if you make this a... what was the word my Guardian used to throw at me when I asked too many questions? Um... an inquisition. Right." Riven said, amused.

Britain
Snorting, Rio traded an amused look with Riven; he felt vaguely as if he were being interviewed for a magazine or talk show. "I try very hard to play the piano. My 'teacher' forced me to in the beginning because I had no focus; it has become even more important since I returned from Egypt. I seem to have quite a bit of trouble controlling my temper, these days."

A frown touched his lips, and he played with the ends of his hair thoughtfully. The embedded mark on his arm ached faintly in response to his thoughts. "That is a story for another evening, but I really must share it at some point, Riven. It was...exciting, to say the least."

Sosiqui
"Oh, yes - we got your package," Riven said, glancing at Airyn. The giddy squeal that erupted through the house when she realized the sender had been... something. "It sounds fascinating, though... yes, another night. I should make dinner." The spirit Fa'e drifted upwards from the couch. "You're welcome to stay if you'd like, though I'm not sure what your taste is. If nothing else, I've gotten a lot better at cooking with all this."

Airyn nodded. "The scarab is so pretty, thank you!"

Britain
"Certainly not, you have enough to worry about- and, as you said, it is a school night." Standing, Rio carefully spent a moment to fasten the veil back in place, eyes distant as he worked around long fingernails. He looked back at Airyn with a smile, brushing his hair over his shoulder.

"I am happy that you are pleased with it. There were all colors and designs; I thought you might like that one best." Fishing around in his pockets as a thought occurred to him, he pulled out his wallet, removing two business-stye cards and handing them to her. They bore his name, a phone number, and the logo for 'DarkMirror Financial' in the corner.

"If you would please give one of these to your father, Lady Airyn, I would appreciate it. I keep forgetting that I HAVE a cellular phone; you should both be able to reach me should a situation arise where my aid could prove useful." A hand rested on her hair with another smile, before he turned and moved towards the door. "Airyn has my number, Riven- please don't hesitate to use it if you need someone to rant at again!" ^_~

Sosiqui
"Ooh... I will!" Airyn accepted the cards as if they were something rare and precious, blushed at the touch, then turned back to glance at her father. Riven was standing in the kitchen doorway.

"Go ahead, see him out like a good hostess," Riven prompted her, grinning. "Thanks so much for visiting, Rionne. I'm... really glad you did. And I'll use the number if I need it, though I think I'm a lot further away from that edge than I was before you showed up!"

Airyn skittered to the door and opened it, sticking her head out to look at Ghlyssa's tree for a moment, then shuffled her feet at Rionne. "I, um, thanks for... visiting!" she squeaked, finally.

Britain
"Good luck, Riven- try not to work yourself too hard!"

Pausing, Rio realized that he still had company. There was a moment of hesitation before he stepped back over to her, kneeling down where he could give her a hug.

"Take care of yourself, and your father," he said softly. "Though it may be difficult, I know everything will be alright. Believe in yourself, as I believe in you."

Baby Brother?!

Riven stood at the doorway to Airyn's room for a moment, just listening. The night sounds surrounded the Glade, branches and what few leaves remained after the winter rustling in the breeze. Somewhere Biome was moving, the dragons' movements a subtle mechanical sound... and Dillin was in with Airyn, his high-pitched squeaks and chirrs showing his amusement.

He could see her through the partly open door, working dutifully on her homework, though every so often she'd reach to the side and doodle something on another piece of paper with her off-hand. She did so now; a small moth fluttered free, inciting a spate of leaping and grabbing from the tiny kiri.

Riven pushed the door open. "Airyn?"

"...at rest," he heard her whisper quickly, and the moth fell to the ground, only to be overwhemled by Dillin's eager grasp. She turned. "Hi, Daddy!"

"C'mere, Sprout..." Riven floated over to the bed and sat down on it, smoothing the covers with one hand before she bounced up next to him, leaning into his side in that way that made him smile, grateful for her affection. "I have something very important to tell you."

She stilled immediately. "Is it about school?" she asked, a nervous quaver in her voice.

"No, it's not... it's about this." Riven reached down and pulled the crystal pendant out into plain sight, not taking the necklace off but dangling it off the silver cord. "This necklace."

"The one you an' Biome found? It's pretty. Can I have it?" She perked up.

"No." Riven made a face. "This necklace is... very important."

"Is it magic? You asked Dr. Mephisto about it, right?" Airyn peered curiously at it, then looked up at him. "Didja find out what it is?"

"Yes... um. Sprout, it's alive, sort of." Riven swallowed, then went on, speaking quickly. "There's a spirit bound to it. You know, like what I've told you I can see? Like the creatures I've called sometimes?"

Airyn nodded, her eyes wide with curiosity now. "Can I go to the Spirit Realm yet? You promised..."

"I know, when you were older - maybe soon, but that's not the point," Riven said. "The point is that the spirit bound to this crystal... um... it's going to become a baby, Sprout."

Airyn froze. "A... a baby?"

"Yes... a little brother, a new part of our family."

Airyn reached up with one hand to touch the crystal; Riven resisted the completely irrational urge to move it away from her. Her fingers touched it lightly, as if scared it would bite her. "Are you telling a true story, Daddy?" she asked, skeptically.

"Just like how you told Star your mommy was a tree and your house was made of living trees," Riven said. "It was weird, but it was a true story... and so is this."

"Um. O-okay," Airyn replied, rubbing lightly at the crystal before letting it swing freely on the cord again. "Um."

"Are... are you okay with that, Sprout?"

"Um. I dunno." Airyn squirmed. "It's kinda weird."

"It's going to happen, though. I just wanted to tell you... so you'd know..." Riven sighed, then smiled at her. "But you'll always be my very special Sprout, no matter what. My special girl."

She smiled, and snuggled into him.

Springtime

Sundragyn
Ghlyssa swept upwards, trickled into old roots, and filled the body she had vacated so many months previously.

For a moment, she was disoriented, unable to find her head or her feet, before she abruptly remembered that she had no head and feet. She was a tree, thinking tree thoughts, remembering being something other than wood.

Time to return.

She stretched; her branches shook violently, shedding a few leaves and what berries the birds hadn't eaten during the winter. Her roots twitched, heaving up the earth above them.

This was harder than it had been to turn into a tree in the first place.

She paused for a short rest, wondering if anyone was home. She certainly hoped so.

Sosiqui
Someone was definitely home, but the first being in the Glade to notice Glee's imminent return (besides the trees, of course, which began rustling immediately) was Biome. The twin dragons padded sinuously outside and regarded the shifting tree with deep suspicion, then split off and each walked one circle around it, in opposite directions.

Then they nodded, and darted inside.

A moment later, Riven and Airyn came flying through the front door, both of them with eyes as wide as dinner plates. "Glee?" Riven whispered, staring at the tree.

Airyn threw herself at the tree and wrapped her arms around it. "Mommy!" she cried out.

Sundragyn
Ghlyssa would have cried out, but she as yet did not have a mouth. She had felt something, through bark that was slowly becoming skin again, the first thing she had felt physically in many long months. It was incredible, indescribable.

Could she focus on growing a mouth? Or eyes? She wasn't sure. Better just to let it happen as it needed to.

She could guess who it was based on height alone, though. She shook her branches in an attempt at acknowledgement, shaking more leaves loose in a sudden shower.

Her bark was definitely growing smoother, warmer, and smaller branches were receding into the tree's limbs. On two large branches, the leaves seemed to be slowly changing into feathers.

She tried to speak, and managed to make a whispery, wordless sigh, not unlike wind rustling through the leaves but with a slight touch of a familiar voice to it.

Sosiqui
Riven was shaking, but he moved forward and gently unwrapped Airyn's arms from around the tree's trunk. "Wait just a little bit longer, Sprout... I think..." Airyn fought him for a moment, then gave up and let him pull her away, though she looked at the tree with a combination of fear and longing. Biome still stood on both sides of Fa'e and child, alert guardians just in case.

"Please, please be Glee," Riven whispered as the leaves showered down onto them.

Sundragyn
Almost there. Tree limbs that were suddenly arms fell to her sides, the last few excess leaves fluttered away, and she was Ghlyssa again, standing with her feet underneath the dirt, wearing the same dress she had been wearing in September, though it was considerably grubbier now.

"...oh," she said, sounding almost surprised, and broke into a wide smile. She picked her muddy feet out of the soil, and all but flung herself at Riven and Airyn, arms wide.

Sosiqui
"MOMMY!" Airyn shrieked, tears streaming down her cheeks, and threw herself into her mother's arms - with Riven close behind her. It took all the willpower he had to stop and let his daughter go first; he made himself keep a bit of distance and watch and simpy smile, with growing joy, as Airyn clung fiercely to Ghlyssa.

It was okay. She was okay. It was all going to be okay.

Sundragyn
"I'm sorry I was gone so long. I didn't mean to be gone so long. Trees think slowly sometimes, they can't help it. I am so glad to be back." Ghlyssa had tears in her eyes; she was clinging to Airyn almost as tightly as her daughter was to her. "I think you grew a bit while I was gone. I don't remember you being this tall."

She looked up at Riven, and let out a small, guilty laugh, her wings folding against her back. She didn't seem quite sure of what to say.

Sosiqui
Riven grinned - and, to his surprise, Airyn squirmed out of Glee's grasp and moved to one side, giving him an expectant look.

The spirit Fa'e laughed, and moved forward to enfold Ghlyssa in a tight hug, his insubstantial wings spreading to fluff over her as well. "Welcome home," he murmured, and kissed her hard.

Airyn smothered a high-pitched, happy giggle. Riven didn't particularly care.

Sundragyn
Ghlyssa embraced Riven tightly, letting herself fold into him. She could imagine not moving from this spot for a long time. "I really am sorry I was gone so long," she murmured back. "It feels like... I don't even know what month it is anymore. I missed you so much. Was everything okay while I was gone?"

Sosiqui
"March... I think," Riven said, holding her close still, breathing in the scent of her. The tree had held the scent of her leaves and flowers, but nothing else. "And everything was-"

Oh boy.

"Everything was fine... but a few things changed that we need to tell you about," the spirit Fa'e said, gently, and saw Airyn squirm out of the corner of his eye. "But they're mostly good," he added, quickly. "So don't be worried."

Sundragyn
Six months? It had been six months? It hadn't felt like six months. It had felt like... two, tops. She would have to be careful of that in the future.

"Mostly?" Glee squeaked. She shook her head. "I'll try not to worry. Oh. Oh. It's too long."

Too long without smelling, without seeing, without feeling. She felt nearly dizzy with the sudden rush upon her senses.

Sosiqui
"But it doesn't need to be now," Riven said quickly. "Come on, let's go inside." He released her from the hug, reluctantly, then took her hand and gently guided her towards the door, and Airyn skipped next to them with a big smile on her face... and started talking a mile a minute.

"I missed you so much Mommy! I talked to you almost every day, did you hear me?! I told you everything! About school and that horrible bully Renswell and about making friends with Star and about sleeping over an' making a pact an' getting my own magic an' Dr. Mephisto an' switching schools an' my new art teacher an' making butterflies an' the weird stuff happening at school an' the new baby!"

Riven stared in vague and unspeakable horror at his happily babbling daughter when she stopped for breath.

Sundragyn
Ghlyssa had begun to follow back to the house, but she stopped short as Airyn's long speech began to sink in. She pressed a hand to the side of her head.

"What?" she asked, weakly, and shook her head. It was far too much to process at once. "One thing at a time. New... baby? Should I sit down first?"

Sosiqui
"Um. Possibly." Riven opened the door, his thoughts spinning on overdrive. He'd hoped to be able to take it easy, tell her about things simply... but no... "Sprout, can you... let me explain all this to mommy? You can wait and show her later," he added, as Airyn ducked in ahead of them, arrowing for her sketchpad and pencil.

"Aw..." She pouted, but moved away to sit, pencil-less, on one of the armchairs.

Riven tried to guide Glee over to the couch. "I promise, it will all make sense once I've explained it to you, okay?"

Sundragyn
She sat, her brow furrowed with worry. "I hope so."

The rest of the spiel was beginning to filter down, and it was making less and less sense to her. Airyn's own magic? A pact? What sort of pact? What on earth did "making butterflies" mean? Who was that Doctor person?

"Start with the new baby part," Ghlyssa said, her eyes wide. "Whose baby?"

Sosiqui
"Well... ours, I guess," Riven said, tugging at the necklace he was wearing so that the pendant, still hung in mesh, swung free of his clothes. He took the mesh off, and the small spirit flowed around his fingers before returning to stay close to the crack in the stone. "I found this necklace a few weeks ago, lying on the ground... and apparently it has the soul of a fallen being in need of a second chance bound to it." His lips quirked in an ironic smile. "Sound familiar?" he added, gently.

"So it's going to be a baby before too long. It chose us to be its family," Airyn interjected, her eyes wide.

Riven nodded. "The child is the Guardian of Serenity. I... don't know why it chose me... us... but my Guardian..." He made a face. "I complained about children coming from nowhere, and she laughed at me... we showed up in a similar way." The Fa'e sighed, and grinned. "So I guess I can't complain. It was just... really surprising, all of a sudden."

Sundragyn
"That's... that's a baby?" A small pucker appeared between her eyes for a moment, then it faded again. Ghlyssa laughed lightly. "Or it will be? When? Do we know where it's going to sleep? Riven..." She shook her head in disbelief, but there was an excited sparkle to her eyes. "I can't say I would ever expected to come back to this."

Sosiqui
"You and me both... but yes, it's going to be a baby. A boy, apparently." Riven held the crystal out to her, and the spirit attached to it ventured out a little bit, curious. "Though, Sei - Shina and Hoshi's son - he's also got one of these crystals! At least this one chose a family instead of a child... poor Sei."

Airyn hopped off the armchair and clambered onto the couch, snuggling up next to Ghlyssa. "But I'm still going to be your very special only little Sprout," she added, making sure her mommy remembered that.

Sundragyn
"Well, of course." Ghlyssa fluffed a wing around Airyn's shoulders and planted a kiss on her forehead. "No one else could possibly be my Sprout."

She frowned slightly at Riven, though. "Poor Sei," she agreed. "That's... that's not fair to him at all. I hope he'll be okay." She thought that she'd heard, at the very least, that Shina and Hoshi had had a son, but she certainly hadn't met him. Oh, but she had been so... so distant. No more, she promised herself. "What else happened?"

Glee looked back at Airyn, obviously worried.

Sosiqui
Riven sighed. "The rest is mostly one thing, but it's more complicated... do you want to rest first? It can wait, it's not really really urgent or anything. I wanted to make sure you knew about the baby thing first, so you wouldn't be really surprised if he showed up soon." He glanced down at the crystal, then carefully tucked it back in the mesh and let it hang freely again.

Airyn squirmed a bit, but fell quiet when Riven raised one eyebrow at her. "You can sleep first if you need to, Mommy," she said.

Sundragyn
"I think I might need to wash before I sleep," Glee said, looking rather doubtfully at the earthy smears up to her ankles. "But I'd like to know now. I couldn't possibly sleep while I was wondering."

Sosiqui
"Okay..." Riven prepared himself, mentally. "Well... Airyn was feeling kind of unhappy because she didn't have any magic."

"A nasty boy at school was bullying me 'cause of that, too," Airyn said with a scowl, and she folded her arms to her chest. "Nasty stinky Renswell Colton."

"Yes... and Airyn made a friend."

"My best friend! Her name is Star, and she's a demon!"

"The kind that's okay, like Astaroth," Riven added, quickly. This tag-team storytelling was tiring, but he wasn't going to tell Airyn to be quiet now... it was her story, after all.

"She's wonderful and- you didn't hear what I said when I talked to you, did you, Mommy?" Airyn pouted, and leaned against her mother's side. "Otherwise you'd know 'bout Star."

Sundragyn
"I'm sorry, I didn't." Ghlyssa's mind was reeling from this story, but apologies were important. "The tree was... well, it was my body, but I wasn't always really in my body. And trees can't exactly listen in the same way people do. I wish I could have. I'd like to meet Star, though."

Demons she could understand. Astaroth had been extremely gentlemanly the last time she'd seen him, and Bronnie, even if she was only partly demonic, was, well... her sister, for lack of a better word. That was nothing worrying in itself. There had to be something more to this all than that.

Sosiqui
Riven caught sight of Airyn as she nuzzled into Glee's wings... She should do this herself. He shouldn't save her from having to tell her mother what she did... it was one of those important things his Guardian kept telling him about raising kids. "Sprout, why don't you tell your mom what happened?" he said, gently but firmly.

Airyn cringed a bit; Riven had scored a direct hit. "Um... well..." She squirmed, then sighed. "Um. Since Star's a demon, she can... make deals with humans... so we made a deal so I could have magic," she mumbled, and pushed up her sleeve on her right wrist. There on her skin was the bright red mark of the pact seal, and under it the thin white scar. "We... did it on a sleepover... and her mom and dad tried to stop it, but they couldn't... it was all our fault." Her voice dipped down to an ashamed whisper. "It's gonna have a price someday, they said. I... I'm sorry..."

Sundragyn
Ghlyssa stared at the mark on Airyn's wrist in stunned silence for a moment. She put her hand to her mouth, her jaw working with an attempt to find words.

A price? She had gone away, and this had happened to her daughter? She should have been here, while Airyn was having problems at school--wasn't that what a mother was supposed to do?

"Oh, Airyn." Abruptly, she hugged Airyn tight to her, rocking slightly, her eyes filling with tears.

Sosiqui
Airyn crumpled into the hug, sniffling. "Do you forgive me, Mommy?"

Riven felt awkward, suddenly, as though he was on the outside looking in.

Sundragyn
Glee sniffed. "I forgive you," she said. "I'm sorry I wasn't here."

Without letting go of Airyn, she glanced over at Riven. There was no censure in her expression or her voice, no blame. "What... what sort of price? Do you know that?"

Sosiqui
Riven shook his head. "Star's parents, Paimon and Rakshasi, said that they couldn't tell for sure, but that there would be a price to pay... they just thought it wouldn't..." What was the phrase they had used? "... 'come to collect' for a while... until the girls were older."

"Do you want to see what I can do, Mommy? It really did give me magic," Airyn said, anxiously.

Sundragyn
Ghlyssa nodded, her expression grim. "I guess we can only hope that it's... not too great a price. For both Airyn and Star's sake."

She loosened her grip on her daughter slightly, and made herself smile as warmly as she could, though the worry was still evident in her face. "I would love to see, Sprout."

Sosiqui
"'Kay!" Airyn vaulted off the couch, snatched up her sketchpad and pencils before returning, and began to draw with her right hand.

Slowly, a flower took shape - blue, pretty, like the ones in her Mommy's hair. As she drew, the pact seal on her wrist began to glow softly. When the final line was complete, the flower abruptly peeled off the paper, standing straight up, attached only to the paper at its base as though it were growing there.

"I made that," Airyn said, shyly, looking at her mother and hoping for her approval. "If I draw butterflies, they fly around until I tell them to stop."

Sundragyn
Ghlyssa reached out to touch the flower, but seemed to think better of it at the last moment. "It's... it's wonderful, Airyn! I've never seen anything quite like it. You'll have to show me some butterflies another time." She broke off, yawning. "I think, though, that right now... I need to wash up, and sleep for a while."

Sosiqui
"They can't stay forever though... I hafta tell them to be done, or they'll pull on the magic too much and make me feel sick." Airyn refocused on the flower. "Be at rest," she told it, and immediately the pact seal stopped glowing and the flower flopped backwards, mere paper again.

"That's enough for now, Sprout," Riven said gently. "Mom needs to rest now." He fluffed one insubstantial wing around Ghlyssa's shoulders. "I missed you," he said, softly. "And I love you."

Sundragyn
"I love you, too." Ghlyssa kissed him, and then turned to Airyn to hug her tightly.

She rose, gave her wings a slight, tired shake, and wandered off vaguely in the direction of the washroom, already beginning to yawn violently.
