it was our last home football game of the season, and it had rained ALL that week. the field was one giant mud pit, and ironically, one of the songs we were playing at half time was Wipe Out. we had a dance to do while we played Wipe Out, and it was extremely difficult to do when your feet were constantly sliding out from under you or getting stuck in the mud. luckily, nobody actually fell, or it would have dominoed and we would have all "wiped out." which would have been AWESOME except that we had contest the next day and couldn't get our uniforms extremely dirty. stressed however, the visiting team did a dance that their seniors made up, which involved them laying on the ground and rolling around. we were all jealous, because we hated doing Wipe Out, and wanted to fall to spite our director. we were also mad because we had focused mainly on perfecting the Wipe Out dance that week, and we all wanted to focus on our contest show. mad

omg, fall of 2005. we had a huge "monsoon" (haha, that's what we call uberbad rainstorms) all day on a saturday of a competition. so it was postponed until the next wednesday. the field, sadly, was not astroturf...
it was just one HEWWWGE mud puddle. seriously. by the time we were done, us, the pit instruments, the guard equipment, and the backdrops were muddy. luckily, i didn't fall. and thank God our pants were black and not white. though my one friend fell, and our tops are white, and she got her pants and top all muddy.

and then this year during a football game it started getting REALLY windy, and it rained. we were all gone, enjoying 3rd quarter with food, and everything starts blowing around. the TUBA, of all things, starts blowing down the bleachers... luckily, the parents saved it, and there were some other people there who secured stuff. we all just took as much stuff as we could carry back onto the buses, and it took about an hour to sort it all out once we got back to school. i was the last person back to the stands and got none of my stuff. when we got back to school, i couldn't find my flute. ANYWHERE. i was freaking out till someone told me it was in the trailer w/the big instruments.

you know it's WAY too cold out when you tune and then not even 5 minutes later you're out of tune again. xp

Well, I guess it wasn't THAT bad, but it was pretty awful.
After we got off the charter busses, we went to a local school in Flagstaff to practice our show. Their field had real grass (not turf) and was all torn up, with holes and mud everywhere. xD; (Their yardlines and hashes were right on, though. =])
So yeah, we kept having to do this one set over and over. I had to march backwards for eight counts and then transition forward. About on the seventh or eighth step though, there was a HUGE hole where I was supposed to step. I totally kept tripping. It was like: "step-step-DROP-step...RESET!" xD

At one of our marching competitions it had been raining ALL day and we had to march on a grass field (not to mention my first time marching on a grass field, thank goodness for turf) Anyway, we were second to last to perform that day. It was dark, cold and extremely muddy. I almost fell marching onto the field, and I was leading the line. We managed to get through the show with only about three people falling and we came in first place : )

Northern States Regionals. Giant's Stadium.
Thirty degrees, if not colder.
Winds like whoa.
Rain with drops about the size of my eye.
Felt like snow at times.
Deff some hail.
And being as it was inside the stadium,
the wind whipped around.
The guard (me and others) were in, basically, bathing suits with see through skirts.
But the rain wasn't too bad, if it weren't cold, cuz our band camp it POURED.
ha ha.
good times, bad weather.

we have grass fields. performing on turf is like heaven. our practice field as two sets of yardlines, one right and one wrong. it has holes, many. very muddy. but, on the bright side, it is uphill, so the field hockey field, which it is practically illegal to step on, even just the corner, gets flooded and we dont =P

Our first game this season it started to rain so hard that you couldn't see in front of you. We had to fun back to our bandroom, which is about 150 yrds away (1 and 1/2 football field). We and our instruments were soaked. about half of the instruments had to go to the shop. One freshman ran into the door trying to get back in the room. lol

We had one year where we were getting ready, and we had just arrived. It was freezing cold and we hd sub zero temperatures. We were practicing then and all the sudden we heard the drummer hit his snare and the drum stick went right through the top of the drum. After we fixed that things just got worse. We kept blowing through our instruments and everything to try to keep them warm and we had icicles of spit hanging on the bells of all the brass instruments like my trumpet. When we were finally up we went out and it was so cold that all the valves from and the reeds on the woodwinds cracked. The whole rest of the show consisted of "role playing" with our instruments. It was so funny. All the other bands after us had the same problem. The screwed up part was our marching and counting and our forms were so good that we won second place. We were all very surprised.

Our first show of the season last year was marched on wet Astroturf.
Not a fun experience. Talk about major Slip N Slide action..

I've have few here. For 1 i live in Colorado.

One time it was a football game and really really cold one. It was snowing and had already snowed about 4 inches. Theirs a drum break in our show and in that time my valves on my trumpet got frozen. OH MY GOD! It was awful i spent the rest of the show blowing air trying to thaw it out! But me and some other people ditched afterwards and got pizza ^.^

Another time we had to march at a local parade. It was about 90 degrees. 2 yes 2 people fainted because of dehydration. Blarg!!!

Hmmm...
Well, there have been a few.

One was a 110-degree heat advisory day, but because we were honoring veterans, we had to be in full uniform. Ugh. That was miserable.

Another time was during a Saturday rehearsal. We had to use the football practice field, of all things, because the darned soccer players stole the BAND practice field. It was full of mud pits and only went to the 20 yard line.

And then there were a couple times it rained when it usually isn't supposed to. One of them was a football game. We all got stuck in moldy ponchos and the woodwinds weren't allowed to play (and that was during "area night" where all the elementary schools and our middle school gets to come and enjoy the football game, and when the high school plays with the middle school). The other was during a Veteran's Day Parade with our intermediate school feeder. It was raining the entire time. And the worst part? There was a kid from the middle school playing one of the greatest brands of flutes out there. In the rain. Everyone wanted to strangle him. xD

Last year's homecomming game it started to pour the minute the first marcher stepped onto the field. When we got to our starting set, we had to wait there for a LONG time while pit put away all of the electrical equipment they had just taken out, so no one got electricuted. We have a "fake" field (not real grass) so it got real slippery real quick. Ironically, the minute the last person was off the field, it stopped raining. XD

We've hit some pretty awful weather. 100 degree weather, 90% relative humidity. In wool uniforms. Just about every game we had this year was like that. Minus one, which was worse. 90 degrees and drizzling most of the game. We are in the worst stands imaginable and we have to shuffle around putting on ponchos whenever it'd start to rain heavily. Our horns would fall and tubas lost their mouth pieces down below the stands. And then at half time! We go onto march, it's wet and sloppy and awful, and right before we kick off for our drill, the rain gets to its peak for the entire night. Then the other band gets onto the field... and it stops raining altogether! x_x; it was insane. We decided that they had a weather machine XD
