River Angel Odin Okay, this has been bothering me for three years...since 6th grade when I joined the middle school band. I'm not saying I downright hate my band director or anything, but I can't possibly keep tempo without having to tap my foot. And he's told me so many times to stop (but I still havn't) and he says that tapping your foot is for babies, which was quite insulting to me, actually. My dad's a big music teacher (He was Rhode Island Teacher of the Year) and he taps his foot, which basically means that Mr. Fortier was calling him a baby. The funny thing is, he looks up to my dad yet he's calling him a baby. sweatdrop Anyway, do you think tapping your foot is at all bad? I dont agree with you BD but I never tap my foot but I cant keep tempo so try tapping your toes in your shoes

the whole thing about not tapping your foot is because at concert festivals it is distracting to the judges. when i started band, yeah we were taught to tap our feet but when i got to high school i was told not to. then our new director came my second year of high school and told us to count in our head. but if you have to tap your foot, don't. instead, tap your toes inside your shoes so it isn't distracting and you'll still be in time. hope that helps a little...

Foot-tapping is one of the first thing they tought us in band...I mean, they ask that we tap inside our shoes at concerts, but otherwise it;s strongly encouraged. Your band director is weird....tapping your feet keeps you in tempo! Our new BD even suggested that we learn to be ambidexterous with our tapping and learn to tap with our left foot.

I used to tap my foot until I got the bassoon and you can't tap your feet with bassoon really, confused so managed to learn to sway to the beat, then I was yelled at. sweatdrop So I then learned to tap my toe in my left shoe. It was difficult at first but it is very useful. 3nodding

Ummm... Yea, you kind of can tap your foot with the bassoon... And swaying is bad too. My old junior high band director told us to tap our toes inside our shoes. The reason why you don't tap your feet is 'cause when videotaped, the many tappers are ALWAYS off time with each other and sometimes even the music. When I went back with a group of my friends when we had a late arrival and they still had school and morning practices, we held the little tappers feet down, and videotapped their badness. I never tap my feet (Duh...).

Sometimes you just gotta tap your foot, but it looks strange in a concert setting.. Just tap your toe inside your shoe.

I tap my foot all the time. Sure, during marching I couldn't try to march and tap my foot because I'd break my ankle, but in concert season I tap my foot all the time. Particularly when we have a lot of tempo changes and retards.
Lately, I've started mentally keeping tempo, though.

hell without foot tapping our clari's wouldn't know what measure it is half the time... tapping is always a good thing... unless it's during a show while playing on a hardwood floor with hard soled shoes. it happened to us once... me and two of the clari's were tapping and the song got quiet and all you heard was, while the song was playing, *tat tap tap tap tup tap* we realized that we were so loud and almost started laguhing out loud.

Tap your foot, there is nothing wrong with it.

I tap my foot listening to any music now, in and out of band lol. And when we get a good song to play in jazz band I'll be taping my foot and at big rests in the song I'll alot of the time notice my foot has gotten stuck with my toes in the air lol. xd

the first instrument i learned to play was the piano, and my teacher even told me to tap my feet to help with keeping time. however, i didn't need to.
now that i'm in band, i sometimes tap my foot but somehow i'm able to keep beat in my head.
my band instructor says nothing about it, and she taps her stick on the chairs to help us with the beat as well!
