xd what kind of sword work Delmar?
I've had very little formal training with swords the little instruction that I have had (using the katana and chinese broadsword) I combined what I've learnt from stick work and just experimented through trial and error (I've got the scars through the error part of it). I remember my first instructor (a very hard traditionalist) telling me that the first blood that my sword should draw is my own (go figure).
The way I learnt all of my weapons work (including knives, chucks sticks etc) was my first real instructor would show me the bare basics and then I would go away and get as many different resource materials as possible and spend hours and hours alone practicing and experimenting techniques and methods studying anatomy, using the weapons blind folded etc.
I would then go back and show my instructor what i'd learnt and he would pick me up on little bits and pieces and then I'd go away and keep refining and learning.
While this does seem to be a little unorthidox (sp) i've found it very effective. Because our bodies are all different we all move differently. No two people will ever use a weapon the same. This is why you'll never see somebody handle a weapon like me and visa-versa.
It takes a lot of dedication and it can be very lonely at times. I remember spending my evenings and weekends locked away somewhere on my own just practicing and drilling while every one else went out partying because all that mattered to me is that I improved and achieved my targets so I could reach my next target level. The same apllied with my bag training and wooden dummy work.
I've got many fond memories of myself and my best mate on friday and saturday nights would be out the back of the house with a glass of OJ or a beer (in my friends case) and throwing knives into a target untill the early hours of the morning.
