When Zach was killed in FF7. Cloud basically took it in memory of him.

it be zack's sword man...he got it from zack before he passed over..that is in VII though...in AC it was a gravemarker for Zack after time caught up with the blade and it was rendered useless pretty much...RIP Zack..we love ya man..

Way too many Pages for me to search to see if I'm reiterating or not...
The Original Buster Sword, Belonged to "Angel," Zack's Mentor... Zack Later Inherited/Was Given/Took it, and Used it during his stay in SOLDIER... As the Two Approached Midgar... "Events" Progressed, and Zack Died. Cloud Wound up with the Sword From then On.
After the Events of FFVII (PS), Cloud Placed the Sword, Blade-Down into the Ground, Pointing into the Skye, Where Zack Died as a Memorial/Tribute... Which Just happens to be on the Outskirts of the New City, "Edge."

Also, Because I just now Noticed it... The AC Sword, Which has a name... "First Tsurugi," or "The First Sword," does not appear in FFVII anywhere.
The Ultima Weapon, True Players will recall, Was a Double Bladed Zweihander, whereas First Tsurugi is a Single Blade, Given it's merged... Therefore, The Ultimate Weapon in FFVII is not the "First Tsurugi" Nor is there any other Sword in the Game that actually has a Similar Shape to the "Buster Sword" or the "First Tsurugi..." That shape being the Extremely Broad, Single Edge Cleaver-like Sword we all know and Love... There are many Alternate Shapes for the Swords... The "Force Stealer" and "Ultima Weapon" are examples of the Double-Bladed Versions, the Realistic Swords "Yoshiyuki" and "Ancient/Rune/Noble Sword" (I can't Remember Which, but it looks like a Real Claymore ><)... None of Which Resemble Either of the Blades...
It is Speculation, on my part, that the Name and the Shape of the Blade, or moreso it's Similarity to the Original Buster Sword... That Cloud May Have Had it Fashioned in Memory of Zack, or an attempt to Create his own Identity, thus the Variations in the "First Tsurugi"... (Think... Cloud Used the Buster Sword for a prolonged amount of time because he thought that Him and Zack were the same person... and then for a short while until the death of Sephiroth) or even a Combination of the two...
Now, Who exactly forged/created it for him? Who knows... Maybe The Sleeping Mythril man did, or Maybe the Planet Created it... It's all Possible, even if not Plausible.

Jhay-R Yeah, Cloud's buster sword was originally Zack's before he died. So, I'm pretty sure he took it from Zack when his memory turned to that of Zack's. That is true, but it wasn't officially Zack's...First it was Zack's mentor, if you seen the pictures of the up coming game Crisis Core.
