Buy Now prices tend to be higher than what the GEN and other price guides list. The actual prices are probably determined by the sell price after an auction, since those prices are determined by buyers and not sellers.
I've only won two or three auctions. I'm an impulse buyer...I don't bid because by the time it runs out, I'll either not really want that item anymore (I probably only bid on it because it was cheap) or someone will outbid me.
Donation items, especially unopened letters, appreciate in value, so I decided that if I couldn't think of anything I wanted for my avatar, I might as well buy the Gaian equivalent of savings bonds.
