Rachael noted the cognomen 'Squire'. While names like 'Tailor,' 'Smith', and, indeed, 'Archer' were common enough, she had a feeling that the name was given for Elizabeth's own occupation, not for a family trade. Maybe that was the way it was done in the city... After all, Del Isyl sounded kind of funny. Anyways, squires were usually noblemens' sons, and they had their own fancy last names. Whatever way, she suspected that it proved true the insult she had heard hurled in the square earlier -- she was the b*****d Knight.

Her mind wandered back to the name, and a little smile flickered across her face at the thought of being Sir Squire's squire, but quickly returned to the square.

"Those... people. The ones in the robes, and the man with the yellow birds -- who were they?"

Elizabeth frowned lightly as she thought back to the events. Lots of people in Isyl wore robes to keep out the cold, although the yellow birds rang a bell. "The man with the yellow birds - he's Life. The story about him changes on where you go and from tavern to tavern, but the main jist of it is he gives and takes life. I don't know why I chose to believe it then, normally I don't believe in anything I can't touch, I guess my head was still spinning.. Although.. If you saw him too.."

She shook her head and quickly dissmissed the thought, "The robes.. Robes... You must mean the Ones of the Flame. A religious order who believe it is their job to return the city to what it used to be, generally by killing people off. Guess I'm on their list now.." She gave a little, nervous, chuckle at that although it wasn't very heartfelt.

Rachael's brows knotted, and she chewed on her lower lip. Finally she asked, "Why do they want to do that?"
PostPosted: Thu Sep 28, 2006 10:57 am

"Who knows.." Elizabeth replied, "It could be because of my non-existant birthright.. Or it could even because I'm a woman in a man's world. Their religion has a history against women. They have never had a woman acolyte progress further than low-level priest or healer."

This idea clearly troubled Rachael deeply. "But, I mean, surely now is the worst possible time to be trying to kill anyone, particularly a knight... are they really that mad?"
PostPosted: Sat Sep 30, 2006 5:22 pm

"They're trying to provoke something big, is all I know. Something that goes back to when this city only had one name." Elizabeth gave a light sigh, "And if you do not know the stories of what this city used to be in the age of Ancients - I'll tell you another time. It's a long story."

The knight hauled herself up from the bed, wobbling slightly on her legs for the first few seconds before she straightened her back. Her spine protested and let out a series of small pops, the sound travelling down her back. "-Ah.." Her eyes closed for a few seconds, her jaw locking so as not to let anymore sounds out. Wthin half a second it was gone and her eyes were open once more, trailing down to peer at Rachael.

"Do you have a bedroll..? Blankets..?" she asked before moving off down the narrow room at an uneven walk.

Rachael did not know the stories about the city. Oh, she had some vague ideas from tales told back at Ferndale, but she doubted every word of those. It was just insane.

"Er... do you really think that..." Rachael began as Elizabeth pulled herself up out of bed and to her feet. The knight's face made it quite clear that she did know it wasn't a good idea, but was going to do it anyway.

Once the pain had passed, the knight asked, "Do you have a bedroll? Blankets?"

Rachael blinked. She had been living in those furs since she left Ferndale... she had lost track of quite how long ago. She didn't own a blanket, and she hadn't really needed one anyway. "Er. Not... as such." As Elizabeth started walking -- or stumbling across the room -- she moved quickly to her side, lest she fall. "You probably shouldn't ..."

"You probably shouldn't.." the youngster pointed out, appearing at her side.

"I probably shouldn't do anything I do, whether or not I am injured." was Elizabeth's response, "I never was an obediant student and sitting still is an ability I lost a long time ago. Heh." She paused by the large mound underneath the white sheet by the door. Slowly, she leant down and pulled up the sheet a little to uncover a dark-stained saddle on its stand.

The dark saddle almost reflected Rachael's face it was so well polished. A plaited white cord hung from the horn of the saddle, contrasting directly with the dark leather. The seat of the saddle looked a little worn out, but well-kept, the soft suede of it having been well used over the years. Sitting on the back of the saddle was a neat roll of material attatched with two dark straps of leather each with a shining silver clasp depicting a birds head.

"I'm sure my master wouldn't mind you borrowing his. He hasn't used it for so long and now has no need for it." Elizabeth murmured, her fingers easily undoing the two catches one by one to release the bedroll and thin blanket, handing it to Rachael carefully.

Rachael's jaw dropped. The saddle was beautiful, and the rich, albeit faint smell of the well-kept leather almost intoxicating. Her eyes did not leave i as Elizabeth spoke to her, or even as the knight carefully placed the bedroll into her hands. She held them a little away from her body, feeling even more small and grubby than she usually did.

"Th-thp-thankyou," she finally managed to stutter. When at last she managed to tear her eyes away from the saddle, and look up at Elizabeth, she stated simply, "that is very beautiful."

Elizabeth turned her gaze to Rachael at her words, giving her an amused smile before reaching up a hand and mussing up her hair. "It's never used - that's why. I could never ride in Sir Tripwood's saddle, I wouldn't be able to forgive myself if I damaged it in any way." she half explained before turning her gaze back to the saddle again. I haven't looked at it for a while.. she mused silently before reaching up and pulling the white sheet over it once more in a careful manner - afraid that the dust sheet itself could damage it.

She stood there for a while, peering at the distinct shape of the saddle even under the sheet. A look of reget passed through her eyes although it was soon replaced with a rather mournful look - even that didn't last long, however, for she soon hid away the expression and turned to hobble back to her bed.

"I trust you will be fine on the floor..?" she murmurmed halfway on her travel, "There.. Isn't anything more you need..?"

---

Selden grumbled as he ended up with two bedrolls instead of an actual bed. Still, he wasn't quite ready to be sleeping entirely on the floor and so he made do. Whisking off his cloak and various cases and trinkets, left him in his smart (and rather colourful) attire. He grumbled quietly about his clothes getting crumpled as he settled himself on the bedrolls, having to use his cloak as a blanket for they were in short supply. He took a quick glance at the bed he had settled Miss DuVall into before looking towards the door and going on to worry about the way Elizabeth conducted herself. His last thought, before he slipped into sleep, was of the meeting he was going to force her to attend tomorrow.

Scarlette let out a small sigh, turning her back to Selden and letting her e yes slip closed. She placed the boy beside her on the bed and covered him up before anything else. She really was beginnign to wonder if the boy was a mute or not. He could possibly be. Or maybe he was just overly frightened. She yawned lightly, having to push her thoughts from her mind and let the sleep take over. Soon enough, she was fast asleep.

Rachael's stomach answered that question for her, and she cringed a little, turning bright red with embarrassment.

The long and pointy eared little elf boy watched Scarlette as she fell asleep. He wasn't hungry anymore and he could feel properly again, but he couldn't help but wonder how it had all happened. Although, this didn't really worry him too much as he took advantage of the extra heat the lady's body gave out - the little boy struggling to get himself closer to the heat source and bury his head against it.

---

The knight paused at the sound of a growl, half turning and giving Rachael a little chuckle. "There's not much... But I'm sure we will find something for you in the kitchen." she murmured, turning all the way to head back in the direction of the door.

"Thankyou," she murmured, bowing her head in embarrassment.

Elizabeth led her new squire down the hallway, ocassionally pausing to lean against a nearby wall to have a short rest. The kitchen was empty, and growing cold quickly for the fire in the oven had been put out. The only people up in the building were the insomniacs and the guard stationed outside.

The only food that could be found left over from the soldiers' dinner was half a roll of poorly made bread. Elizabeth gave a light sigh at it before handing it to Rachael - she could go without tonight. "Looks like there'll be no breakfast tomorrow." she commented before turning Racheal about and leading her away back to her quarters. It was then that she finally collapsed atop her bed, only just making the two wavering steps to the sturdy frame with the uncomfortable mattress.

~~~
As the night drew on, it grew even colder, the old wooden walls of the barracks offering no protection against the freezing air. It was almost as if it was like sleeping outside, even colder than the past few days. Elizabeth, quite used to the cold, managed to sleep quietly through it. However, Selden, unused to the poor conditions in the barracks, shivered all the way through the dark.
The rising sun brought little relief, the red and orange hues hitting against the window and casting eerie shadows about the silent room. In reality, the barracks should have been a hub of activity, but nothing stirred within the deathly cold rooms. The oven should have been lit and warmth should have been spreading from the kitchen. There should have been shouting and squabbles over the measely breakfast, cries from a game of cards where they gambled shifts and their week's pay.
Selden remained fast asleep, used to late starts and lounging in during the morning. However, Elizabeth - quite used to sleeping through the racket for her shift didn't really start until noon - was awoken by the silence. Something seemed odd even before she was half awake, the yellow canary sitting outside on the windowsill was a start.
The knight sat bolt upright in a fright, the yellow canary no longer there. Swiftly the frozen air gripped her torso, the blanket sitting across her lap. Shivering, she half heartedly pulled the blanket up and around her, turning her gaze about the room.
Silence.
