"Thank you very much! You are very kind to..." At that moment Evren fell forwards. She put her hands up as an attempt to protect her head. This was a little scarier than she thought as her vision went black and she could no longer control her legs. But before giving into unconsciousness she hoped she didn't worry her new companions to much.

For the most part Briar had kept to himself, yes he'd rifled through the video games for a bit and played a couple of games but in between trips for more ice cream the games console area had been taken over by a couple of older kids.

The first had been a guy with a black mask, in some kind of jeans and tux jacket combo and a clinking, rattling coming from the chains around his hips. The other was some guy in a purple mask, the second talking to the first although distance and the loudness of the music both served to prevent Briar from hearing what they were discussing.

Not that he particularly cared. Instead he left the video games area to the two older boys and took himself and his bowl of chocolate chip ice cream off to a corner that didn't appeared to be claimed.

There were quite a few people in here now, from the three people who had been by the ice cream bar to the older boys over by the video games area and Briar moodily ate his ice cream.

He didn't want to be here, would much rather be at home but who knew when his Mum and Dad would reappear to take him home and whilst Briar was perfectly capable of taking himself home, he had the feeling that his Mum and Dad wouldn't see it the same way and he would rather not start off the New Year being grounded.

He found himself yawning, feeling a little woozy all of a sudden but it was only nine o'clock - at least it was if the clock up on the wall was correct - not that late at all.

He got up from his corner and headed back to the ice cream bar, they'd had juice there and whilst Briar didn't want any juice, he'd also spotted some fizzy drinks. Maybe he'd get a coke, one with lots of ice or even cherryade or that fizzy blue lemonade stuff which was fun caused it turned the tongue blue.

He'd settled on the blue lemonade and gotten plenty of ice and all, but it hadn't felt the woozy feeling, instead it had just gotten stronger and stronger.

He ended up waking up in the nurse station, a woman with a kind face smiling down at him, Dad had been there too looking concerned but the woman had talked to his Dad and mentioned something about overheating and that after a bit of quiet time he'd been fine and by the time she'd finished his Dad had seemed convinced - enough so that Briar had once again found himself deposited in the kiddie ballroom with the stupid mask that the nurse station lady had given back to him, instructions to take it easy and the mention that Dad and Mum would be in the main ballroom if he needed them.

Dad had left him close by the balloons, but no way was Briar intending to stay there now that his Dad had disappeared back to wherever Mum was because balloons were for little kids and he was most definitely not one of those.

As he started walking away, he found himself almost colliding with a little kid in a pink dress and blue mask making a beeline towards the very balloon area he was trying to escape from.

The last thing Laney remembered was that they were heading up to one of the other floors in the hope that the air would be cooler. The game floor, maybe -- those were usually extra air-conditioned in places like this, because they apparently attracted a high volume of teenage boys who considered showering to be an optional activity.

She didn't remember getting there. She remembered being on the stairs, and she'd missed a step, or her heel had slipped and caught on it -- and she'd slid backwards, trying to catch herself, but her arms had felt oddly heavy and . . .

Had Xanthus caught her? Presumably, since she hadn't snapped her neck or incurred any other new injuries, but -- wasn't it sort of weird to just pass out in the middle of a staircase?

Where was Xanthus? Was he okay? Had he passed out too, was he hurt, did he need her help --

"I have to go," she explained to one of the attending nurses, getting to her feet before the recommended resting period was up. "I have to find my friend, he'll be worried . . ."

Outside the nurse's station, there was a small group of people that appeared to be waiting for friends and loved ones. More people passing out, then.

They said Laney had overheated, but they . . . hadn't given her any water to drink. Shouldn't they have been trying to get her rehydrated? Did they even know what they were doing?

"Xanthus?" she said worriedly, looking for him in the little crowd. Maybe it would be best if they just went home.

Xanthus nudged his way through the gathering of worried faces near the nurses station at the sound of her voice, his mask shoved up to the top of his head so he could see better, his expression somewhat paler for concern.

"Laney! Are you ok? You just...." He gestured vaguely with one hand, indicating her sudden drop before he'd even had a chance to really register the other thumps they had heard, or her theories about them. "Really, are you ok?"

He had been surprised at the number of people hanging around the Nurses station, waiting for someone they had seen drop like a stone.

He offered her his arm in concern, just in case she fainted again. "You just sorta... dropped... and you weren't the only one."

He had suspicions, damnit, and he didn't like them. Damnit why could they not have a nice evening without the possibility of something or someone ruining it with something?

Melinda felt strange being back in Destiny City only a couple of nights, only to be going to a ball. She just returned from England a couple days before, and called Boaz. She tried to explain to him, worried about the blossoming relationship she left. It seem though, it didn't matter to him one bit as he invited her to the ball. So here she was, stepping out of her car looking around car a brief moment. She was in a simple gown of black. The corset tied as tight she would be able to handle so she could breathe.

Slipping into the warm building, her eyes glance around before they spotted who she hoped was her date. She spoke not a word as she slips the pink mask on sbe been given. Moving over to the blond man, she slips her hand into his as she leans against him alittle "So the first time you see me after months...and I am in a mask.." she gives a weak chuckle as she looks up at him.

Fritz St. James / Celsus Knight of Chronos - Purple Mask

"Ah, so if need be, you could teach me," said Fritz, his eyes sparkling in amusement. "I've never tangoed before, but maybe I just haven't found the right partner yet. Isn't that how it goes?" he added, a little mischievously as they stepped around the floor.

"Also twerking is such a terrible turn," he said, giving a mock shudder. "I was very concerned when I discovered what it actually meant."

The tiredness was rather frustrating; he had started off the night feeling quite cheerful, but now Fritz could feel his head spinning, his vision wavering a little in and out. Delilah as well seemed to be suffering from the same bout of weariness; he squeezed her fingers in an attempt at reassuring her.

"The lobby," he said, flashing her a small smile, but his brain felt horribly sluggish. Fritz straightened, tugging at the collar of his suit and loosening the tie a little so that he could breathe more easily. "I think that would be a marvelous place to continue our discussion. And I do believe you're right," he added, with a glance at the drinks table; but he let his gaze move back to Delilah after a second, catching her coy smile.

"Perhaps we could take a turn, later," said Fritz, grinning. "But for now, I think a nice breath of fresh air and some lovely conversation is an excellent idea."

Kirra stumbled and nearly tripped over a balloon when one of the big kids came past, and the red lolly snake she'd been chewing on dropped to the floor and was lost amid the rainbow of popped balloon bits and similarly half-sucked candies. An expression of dismay momentarily crossed her face, but she quickly remembered that there were still whole bowls of sweets for the taking, so it was a bright smile that she turned up to look at the boy in the white suit and leafy mask. She touched her own mask, feathery like a blue bird, and crooked after the near fall. His was prettier, she wished Gigi had let her choose instead of just grabbing one.

"I'm sorry!" she carolled, since she had been the one running. "Are you okay? Did you get some ice cream, they have the one with biscuits in it, and I think choc chip! Ice cream fixes everything."

This was a solemn statement of fact, and the eight-year-old offered her hand to the taller boy, sure that if he was the least bit upset about the bump, more sweets would smooth things over.

The party was in full swing by the time Steve and Chloe finally turned up. Marlin had indeed let his two friends talk him onto the dance floor and spent sometime chatting and catching up with the two over a second beer.

But much as he loved his two friends, he also didn't want to intrude and so he had excused himself with an excuse that he'd spotted another friend and wanted to catch up with them when the two of them had started with the lovey-dovey stuff.

In truth, however he had slipped off the dance floor and made his way over to the buffet table, helping himself to some of the food laid out as he contemplated what to do with himself next. He didn't really fancy heading back onto the dance floor and whilst he might contemplate a third beer later when it got closer to the final countdown, he was pretty good for now.

He guessed he could see if he could find somewhere to sit, especially since Chloe and Steve were going to eventually come off the dance floor at some point and they'd probably want food when they did and the food wasn't half bad - the organisers had definitely made an effort with it.

Actually finding a place to sit, somewhere to fit the three of them sounded like a great idea, he suddenly felt tired and could do with getting off his feet for a little bit.

Although it was a little strange considering that it wasn't really that late and it wasn't like he'd worked the shop today. Although he had yesterday and he'd been up pretty late with it, so perhaps it was just that.

He found a table and made a mental note to himself to definitely keep off the beer or anything else alcoholic until they got to the final countdown part.

A bit of time to rest up his feet and he'd be fine and he'd rather not be like the couple of people who he'd spotted passing out, something that he put down to an early overindulgence in the alcohol that was readily available here.

Wait, was someone talking to him? Oh, God, yes, someone was talking to him.

Jonah flinched as an unfamiliar voice drew near. He looked like a deer caught in the headlights when he glanced up, but he made an effort to smile. At best, one corner of his mouth twitched up. At worst, he looked a little pained.

If asked, he'd blame it on the fatigue. He really was feeling pretty tired. What time was it anyway? It had to be getting late. Hopefully it was close to midnight and he could be on his way before whoever this person was decided to sit by him and prolong the interaction.

All Jonah could think about in that moment was how awkward he felt and how awful of a human being he must be for not being able to appropriately interact with other people.

“Oh... um... yeah, I'm alright... I think...” he said hesitantly. “Just... tired. I just need to rest.”

Of course, that was more or less what he'd been doing all evening, so he couldn't really explain why he was feeling this way. Maybe he was coming down with something. A cold or the flu. The flu was getting to be pretty bad this year, wasn't it?

“Sorry,” Jonah quickly apologized, searching for something he must have done wrong. “Am I in the way? I can move.”

Magiore Carpenter / Lieutenant Aurostibite - Blue Mask

He was not usually the type to go up to anyone on his own, but this was a different situation, and Magiore was attempting to act more like a human being and less like a robot. Socializing was a key aspect of getting to where he wanted to be, after all.

(Even if that socializing was out of his comfort zone.)

The young man was giving him a startled look, but Magiore stood there with his own face impassive, calmly waiting for him to answer. When he finally did, it was hesitant and halted, and Magiore could not help but feel slightly more at ease, some of the tension leaving his shoulders.

"I apologize for speaking to you so abruptly," he said, absently brushing a stray lock of black hair out of his face (even pulled back into a ponytail, the curls were relatively unruly and difficult to tame entirely). "It seems to be that there are many who are feeling tired this evening."

An understatement, apparently. Several had already collapsed. Magiore glanced sideways at the dance floor and then back at the young man in front of him.

"You're not in the way, no," he said. "Would you like a drink of water? Perhaps that would help."

. "It's nice to meet you!" She beamed a smile at Quenton as Faust made himself comfortable on her shoulders. It certainly wasn't every day that she met a cat a bold as Faust and Quenton, despite his...eh...odd dress wasn't all that bad either! No, she was certainly enjoying herself which is why when she began to feel tired and almost sleepy she was a bit puzzled but, it was hot in here. And with Faust sitting on her shoulders and and the lights and press of people, well it wasn't so odd anymore. She always got sleepy when overly warm. She'd have to get a drink at some point.

"Oh! Sure!" She snapped herself back to the conversation at hand as Quenten requested her assistance with Faust's training. She had been physically keeping herself from scooping up the cat, afraid he may not like it much, but with permission she was more than ready coax the feline into her arms. But, as she reached up her hands to nab Faust she felt him slip from her shoulder at the same time the lights appeared to flicker in her vision. An incredible wave of exhaustion hit her as she felt herself fall to her knees and the last thing the orange masked girl saw was Quenten as she lost consciousness and fell onto her side on the floor, thankfully missing poor little Faust.

And like Faust, Chailee was quickly recovered by the on-staff nurses but instead of being rejected from the party was taken to a room to recover with others who had also succumbed to either overheating or too much libations.

To be fair, in his situation, Hitch probably would have thrown the other guy a very, VERY similar look. He was about ready to bow out of the situation to cause minimal trouble when the other man asked him about his foot and made a comment about his cane. Something in Hitch's shoulders relaxed, and his smile came a little more easily as he shook his head. "No man, no, don't even worry about it. This place is sorta... "

His head was swimming, more than he expected; it was sudden, and he tugged at the collar of his suit, drawing in a deep breath and shaking his own head to try and pull himself back together. What the hell? So maybe he was sort of tired. So maybe it was sort of warm in here. So there were a lot of people. But all of a sudden, it was taking everything he had to stay on his damn feet, and then that wasn't even enough.

"... the hell, " he managed to gasp out loud before his eyes rolled back and slid shut, falling like pure dead weight straight into the food table behind him with a resounding crash.

Boaz had admittedly been worried when Melinda seemed to have upped and left for England for a few months without another word. Was it something that he did? Couldn't be. They were making good progress in their relationship plus even if something was really wrong, leaving Destiny City at such short notice just didn't seem like the kind of thing that she would do given what he knew about her based on one of the first conversations that they had together.

Did something crop up back home then? Probably. She did recount previously that the rest of her family was back in England after all. He had sat down with his cousin James to go over the events prior to her departure any way. If anything, it was something that he felt had to be done just so that he could have some ease of mind in knowing that it wasn't really him but something else entirely that made Melinda do what she did. In any case, he didn't see himself as having any other choice in the matter short of going after her in England but he wouldn't know where to start looking for a Melinda Reese in such a huge country so he had in the end chosen to bury himself in his responsibilities in the meantime while waiting for her to return.

Now that she was back and obliging him with a date on New Year's Eve at such short notice, he wasn't about to spend the entire night questioning her on her sudden disappearance however. Complicated things like that could wait till much later. For now, he was simply content to reconnect with her and pick up the relationship from where they had left it. "Mm... but you're still as ravishing as ever I must say Mel." He tugged the black mask on with a smile, his hand giving hers a small squeeze as he guided her into the main ballroom.

"Can I get you something? Some food? A drink? Or maybe a dance?"

"Ah! Into less mainstream-y stuff? Cool! You know, there's an area downstairs with video games set up. If that's more your thing? Or you could put in a request to the DJ. You never know what they have on hand." She winked, glad that at least it looked like people were still having fun. Chiku felt bad that people had to be drained some...but it wasn't any worse than what some people did to themselves on NYE anyways!

And at least here, they could get medical attention if they really needed it.

"Eh, if I find my friends, awesome. If not? Well, it's a good night to make new ones."

Of all the things she'd been expecting, that had not been one of them. Kaida knew better than to try and catch someone so much taller than her [the last time she'd tried with Matt, it had ended in a good dose of pain for her], but as the hotel staff shuffled him off to the medical area, she followed. She had to make sure he was okay! Maybe he'd had too much to drink? Or too little and had gotten overheated? It seemed the staff seemed to think so, so that had to be true...

It was a little worrying, but people did have a habit of overdoing it on New Year's Eve.

“Oh no no no, it's fine. I'm... sorry, I just wasn't expecting...” he trailed off, unsure how to argue against being startled when it was quite clear he had been.

Jonah shifted in his chair. He sat up a bit, removing his elbows from his knees and pulling his hands from his face in an effort to look more like a sociable human being; however, his posture remained somewhat hunched over. He hoped it looked as if it might be from fatigue rather than the discomfort he felt in socializing.

It bothered him a little that his sudden company seemed so impassive. It made the guy hard to read, and Jonah had enough trouble reading people without missing out on body language and voice inflection.

Jonah's eyes darted about the room, taking in the scene around them. This guy was right. It did appear as if there were quite a few people being affected by... something. Maybe they were all tired? That was weird for so many people to collapse from fatigue in so short a time span, though. Jonah had never known it to happen before. It did feel a little stuffy and uncomfortable in the ballroom. Maybe it was just a little too hot with so many people congregating in one area.

They should really look into getting the AC fixed if that was the case. Of course, it could always be something worse.

“Water? Oh, yeah, water would be good,” he said, appearing somewhat distracted now. “What if it's something like a gas leak, though? Shouldn't they evacuate with all these people passing out?”
