    Abandoned
    Unyielding Winter | 3 of 5 | 119 words

It was enough. It was the way of things, the natural order. Winter didn't need to assure herself of anything, but there was always some distant flicker of amusement, a dark humor that almost made her want to smirk when she came upon such folly. Unattended bird eggs. Burrowed sacks or kin eggs. Bleating babies without a protector. It wasn't a hunt, but it was a lesson, and it culled the weak -- or at least, those unlucky enough to be born to the weak. Those unworthy of populating the land.

To most kin, quiet nests or loud children were just a part of the Swamp. To Winter, they were abandoned, and she'd swiftly snuff their presence from her home.

7/4 - Lace - Murkcrow VI - 125 words (Wasp V, Hollyhock V, Dogrot III)User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Flies.

In the summer the swamp blazed with thick, oppressive heat. The humidity climbed until Murkcrow wasn't sure if he was a fish or a Kimeti. And the flies swarmed over everything.

Big ones, little ones. Flies that drank blood and flies that drank sweat. Flies that were prone to biting, and flies without mouths. All the insects of the swamp, raining irritation down on the populace with delicate, lacy wings. Murkcrow swatted at one with his tail. Most sane kin would be sheltering any way they could when the flies swarmed the thickest in the twilight hours. But Murkcrow was still far from home, and didn't care much for wandering the swamp in the dark. He would have to put up with the flies.

42. Starving

Through Your Eyes hadn’t gone hungry a single day of her life. She didn’t know what the feeling was like, let alone what it would be like to starve. She hunted too well for that. If she starved, then there would be none to blame but herself. She was far too proud to let it happen anyways.

She had seen starving creatures though, seen their slowness and their pain. She could not feel it though. She was not so picky, not so stupidly obsessed with proving her strength that she felt a prey such as this beneath her. They did not make good meals, but at least she ended their suffering. They would have died sooner rather than later with or without her help.

Though they were starving, they did, in their own way, keep her from starving; such was the hierarchy of life and Through Your Eyes saw nothing wrong with it.

2/5: Forever and a Day

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. They found her when she was searching for nothing in particular .Serendipity. It was the best surprise. And she was forever grateful for them. They loved her fiercely as she loved them in her soft manner. When she fell into the cold rapids, she had no hesitation that they would find and rescue her. Fear could not latch itself onto her. She had her family and in time, their group had grown. All save Gloom, had their own broods. They nurtured and sent off their wayward little ones to grow and forge their own path. And when things got a little stale, they took a break from all the blood revelry. Her family was hers forever and a day, and she would always be there for them. But now she had a way to ensure it.

    The Path Less Travelled
    Unyielding Winter | 4 of 5 | 107 words

Routine? No. A schedule? Only by the sun.

Her mind spun and she followed her nose. She was driven by the scent of blood and the needs of her stomach, the needs of her partner. Each day was a challenge to be better, to learn more, to perfect a skill or acquire a new one. Hunting was a way of life. Hunting is life, literally and viscerally.

Some might say she took the path less travelled, the road with the last amount of hooves imprinted upon it. She would tell you, had she mind for philosophy and wit, that you assume she saw two roads at all.

3/5: Look-See- Tickle

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Something tickled her. And would not stop. As far as jokes went, this one was in pretty bad taste. Especially since she was near-blind. Look-see could only see general shapes and outlines of things. Color was one bone the swamp threw to her. She would have much preferred textural recognition. It would have saved her from that quicksand or the fallen honeycombs. She thought they were eggs to be saved! But that insistent tickling continued. What in the hell? She swat at it with a quick fick of her nose. It continued. Angrily, she opened her milky eyes and stared at some green shape. "What?" she snarled. The tickling stopped.

7/5 - Beginner's Luck - Wasp VI - 155 words (Hollyhock V, Dogrot III, Murkcrow VI)User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

"Is this how you do it?" Wasp wiggled and shook in a perfect imitation of the dance moves the acha next to him was demonstrating.

"Yeeee-eeees, but now you do this, and this, and this..." The other acha added a series of complicated steps to the end of the dance, and smirked at Wasp. Wasp followed his steps perfectly.

A crowd started to gather as the dance lesson turned into an impromptu dance-off. The acha tried every move he could imagine, and Wasp matched him step for step. Finally the acha sat down, panting with exertion. "I thought you said you couldn't dance?" he gasped.

Wasp shrugged. "I only said I don't know this dance. I didn't say I couldn't dance." The onlookers murmured to themselves. Wasp usually abstained from the dance...ground. He pointed at his mother, tearing it up some distance away. "Did you really think the son of that doe couldn't dance?"

4. Are you there?

She only ever felt a sudden absence once.

She was only a filly at the time, gangly and small, but already strong and sharp. She had eyes out to pick at weakness and a tongue to give a good-natured lashing that always came with a smile even if she made others cry.

She doesn’t think much about it now. Sometimes when the moonlight shines just right and the weight of her bones is light enough, frail enough, she lets herself think about it, but even now she does not associate the memory with pain.

It is a simple enough story. She had woken up in the middle of the night, alone, without her siblings and this time she knew they were gone for good. They had left her behind because she was a wolf and they were dragons; they were simply not meant to be.

She had, for a moment, thought that she heard them and wondered if they were there, if they had come back for her, but they had not. It was curious, this feeling of being alone, but in the end, it was for the best. She was not made for idealism and delusion. They were.

Breaking The Ice (1/5) - 24. Blue

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Breaking The Ice lay out on a dry patch of land that allowed a clear view of the sky. No trees to obscure it and no long stems of plants to tickle his face. He wasn't sure how long he lay there for contemplating the color of the sky. All he knew was that the light blue of the day was fading into a darker, deeper blue. It was something that happened every day but that he had never bothered to watch. Why he was laying in the grass? Through could not think of a possible reason. He merely took in the beauty of each shade of blue. A reminder that change was inevitable.

Breaking The Ice (2/5) - 17. Innocence

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Through watched as a pair of songbirds flitted about. Twirling, and diving, and singing in harmony together without a care in the world. His eyes never once left them in their dance. Such innocence drew him in. Perhaps because he had yet to really experience anything of the world. He himself was still quite innocent. Except for a brief meeting and a chance encounter, he had yet to really live. He supposed innocence was bliss and experience was living. It immediately sparked a desire in him to move, to not stand still anymore, not settle for existing. Though the movements of the songbirds brought to mind days of his youth, he could not help but want to do everything he was still afraid of doing. A revelation for him since he never once pursued that which his innocent mind shied away from.

"For you, naturally," Wasp said with a flourish and a grin as he set an overturned skull filled with mixed fermented fruity drinks - and actual fruits - in front of a pretty partygoer. She giggled and nudged it with a hoof. "But what's in it?"

"Naturally, that is a secret of this establishment, madam," Wasp said cheerfully. "Perhaps you should take a sip and find out!"

The doe nodded and lapped delicately at the drink with her tongue. "Oh, it's good!" she said, somewhat surprised. She was new here.

"We do have a reputation in these parts," Wasp said, waggling his eyebrows at her. "Do try not to have too much, now. Though my mother always did say you could never have too much fermented fruit..."

4/5: Look-See- Comfort

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Comfort. Comfort was knowing you couldn't see anything and knowing that your little family of monsters would never let you fall. Comfort was knowing the monsters you were with were strong and powerful. And beautiful. At least that's what they told her. She smiled. No doubt they shone in their brilliance. Theirs was a delightful trio that kept each sometimes sane member full. She was happy and life was good. She settled down onto a prepared nest of moss and flowers and fell to sleep. Jasmines opened their petals to welcome the night. Sleep came quickly and she fell into a comfortable lull of sleep with her family.
