Woeful eyes could only stare at his pocket card as he recalled his own rewards dropped from the first two bosses. Loot cards. Loot cards. He had no particular in collecting more loot cards. R0GU3 was rather pleased with his current inventory of cards. He admitted that he was definitely not suit to be an all-out attacker, but he could at least confess that he was a pretty good healer that people could depend on. Perhaps he could gather a few luck cards to add to his deck to help increase the number of average heals per turn. Gathering extra luck seemed to be a rather logical conclusion after all, given his class designation as a white rabbit. Rabbits were supposed to be lucky, were they not? After the raid he would have to collect more luck cards to strengthen his deck, but they were rather hard to come by. They were a rather lucky find, after all.
If only he had devoted more time to searching for good cards. If only, if only…
No, no he should not be drowning himself in the game. He was not supposed to be in this game. He was not going to lose himself to this stupid game. There was something happening behind the coding and hardwiring of the game, but he could not figure out what it was for the life of him. The memory of the Alice AI hidden in the secret room with the golden key was still fresh in his mind as if it was yesterday. Perhaps because it really was yesterday. He could not recall the last time he had fallen asleep. It was a game, after all. What kind of avatar slept during a game?
This game was not right. There were glitches. If he looked hard enough and if he looked in the right places he could watch the data pixelate. He could watch the data glitch and reveal something he clearly should not have seen, but it was too late. They were clearly imprinted into his memories. This game was not right, but this game was too alluring. He could not help it. He had to play. He wanted to keep playing. Let him pretend he was happy for just a little while more, please oh please.
He stood in front of the fourth dungeon boss with a mixture of dread and confusion. He could not tell if he wanted more to leave the raid to figure out what was going on with the game or to drown himself in the pleasures of escapism. It was so hard to decide. The dutiful part of him wanted to do his job as a hunter. Alice had said they had made her for a purpose, that they had made this game to begin with, but why? For the life of him, R0GU3 could not conjure up any memories that could provide answers or clues. Yet he was so tired of being a hunter, tired of the heavy feeling that sat on his chest and refused to go away. It was good to be able to ignore his responsibilities for a while, yet there was a part of him that said not to shirk his job. The fate of the entire world was riding on the shoulders of the hunters, were they not?
Try not to think about that right now, a voice sounded in his head as he finally approached the boss of protection. He could feel himself grow smaller as he approached the creature. He could not even see its eyes or mouth or ears. There was only a crown surrounded by a crowd of slithering snakes. The crown was vaguely familiar to him. In fact, hadn’t the previous bosses also possessed crowns in their grasps? They were all shaped familiarly, as if he had seen them before once upon a time in a dream, yet he could not recall where from exactly.
And like all of the other previous bosses, the creature spoke. This time it was a question, a vague question. They seemed to have a habit of asking vague questions or making observations that made you think for better or for worse. “A good question,” he murmured softly as he held his dagger and watch in hand. He paused as the large watch swung in his grasp, and with each swing he wondered if the weight was gradually growing larger and larger. R0GU3 stared down quizzically at first, but somehow he could no longer care. He was merely one player against a mountain of problems, and there was only so much he could do on his own.
But the footsteps were still echoing in his ears. That was right. He still had his party. And this may just be a game, but that was okay. He had to become strong in the game if he wanted to get anywhere further than here, if he wanted to escape the game once and for all. R0GU3 could not say why the creators had decided to throw them all into the game together, but that did not matter at the moment. What did he seek to protect? himself... olivia.... his family. they were important too. perhaps he... he had been going about things wrong. he wanted to protect olivia.... but the thing he had to protect her from was himself. He couldn't fight on. Really his goal was to get her out of here by this point, this was no longer a fun game but he felt hopeless. this just.. wasn't working at all. Protect, he suddenly remembered Big G, his sacrifice, and how it... did nothing in the end.
