"I thought we liked browns," Rochelle raised a pierced eyebrow quizically. She leaned up again, using his arm as a place to grip and balance herself with. "I mean, they're totally straight bait, sure, which is sad for those of us that like the menfolk but not all of them get stuff handed to them on a platter."

She squinted and flopped back down, shaking her head. "I can't tell. He's all covered with gross still. Hopefully whoever Impresses him tells us."

-----

Another one bites the dust.

Kaeyne hummed the little tune from an old Harpers tale under his breath, hooded eyes moving from the quiet, still eggs on the Sands left to hatch. They seemed lively enough during the Touching, if he remembered correctly, and at this point they seemed his only change. The brownze skulked about the Sands among the boys and the remaining two eggs had either atypicals or duds.

He could Impress atypicals. A chance remained.

(Vaail and Naanash)

Koi green, and ahh a girl. Vaail clapped slightly, antsy and well nearly totally bored. Dragons were lovely and interesting and he like the colors and patterns but he wanted to do something already instead of just standing here. Like paint... well maybe not paint. He did better with puncturing the skin in designs than anything else.

At least the little healer will have someone to hang out with. Naasash snorted at his twin and tipped his head, looking out at the strange brown, bronze, goop cover dragon and then the remaining eggs.

Discreet spared one glance for his now Impressed sister but didn't go so far as to stop walking. He had a place to be, and a person to meet. As he walked onward and began to dry he began to look more and more brown and less and less bronze, though perhaps in the wrong light freshly oiled he could still be mistaken for one.

Ultimately however the large brown would still turn out to be a surprise to many, though to near all this would only become apparent later. The dragon decided, and having conducted a careful assessment of every mind present the pale hatchling made his choice.

Step, step, step...halt, halt before Kaeyne.

Meroc felt his heart drop with the unfamiliar and unwelcome feeling of dissapointment as the light brown dragon impressed to another boy instead of himself. Letting out a soft disappointed sigh he watched as the new pair was made. Well there were still two more eggs left on the sands. However that knowledge did little to ease the harpers wounded pride.

Things seemed to have settled down somewhat. The next round of hatchlings – a brown, a few more greens, a color he couldn’t tell whether it was brown or bronze – they all seemed quieter, more sedate. Less inclined to screaming and charging things. Corloss approved on principle, although naturally he still thought Nimith had been the most sensible about it.

A gentleman tries to be prompt. Pass me the meat, C’ross?

“Oh! Right, sorry.” He’d nearly forgotten in the sudden rush of healers and Stands Impression and all manner of distractions. Finding a place where he could sit down and take the weight off his injured leg, he picked up a few scraps of raw meat and set about methodically handing them over to Nimith, who downed them one by one. The deep red of his eyes (a color C’ross now understood probably meant hunger) was being replaced by a lighter green that contrasted pleasantly against the midnight blue of his hide.

After a few moments, however, Nimith paused in his eating and turned his head back towards the sands, alert and attentive. Ellibreth and Psaumith have chosen. Brother, sister! The blue bugled aloud, calling to the two of them. Come and join me?

C’ross looked up, and Ildresaak was all but running towards him, with his arms full of gawky baby green with limbs sticking out everywhere. And out on the sands, a brown had just Impressed to one of the other boys who had been standing with them, and C’ross could instinctively sense a wave of approval from Nimith at the thought of them coming over to join him. He lifted a hand to wave. “Congrats,” he called to the new riders.

Kaeyne didn't have time for silly browns and their pacing, he had smaller eggs to stare at like an Impression-hungry wher about to go feral. The skulking brownze provided nothing but distraction for the sensible sorts on the Sands. In fact, so determined to ignore it was Kaeyne that he didn't realize there was a brownze around him until he stopped in front of the Candidate. Kaeyne dropped his eyes and line-faced at the now-obviously brown.

"I'm busy," he said.

The dragon replied, his voice grave.

K'yne paused. Rainbows flashed, a feeling of possessive approval wrapped around his mind and squeezed. Stubborn Psaumith. Survivalist, strong, suspicious, self centered Psaumith. His. He thought, now would be the time to say something tender and heartwarming, a few words about how he found the other half of his soul (which would be, in fact, very true). K'yne didn't exactly know these words.

He blurted out instead: "But I'm gay."

Psaumith snorted and shoved his nose against K'yne, his large sturdy self leaning closer to the equally sturdy human. No affection twisted his words but slow, wry approval at the blue already offering out a helping hand. How nice. For the moment, it would be taken until he and K'yne weighed the pros and cons of it all.

K'yne patted his head and pushed, gently. His eyes flicked briefly back to the small eggs, surely atypicals, before he and his Psaumith headed towards the feeding table after I'saak, C'ross and their dragons.

Psaumith nosed at a bucket of meat much as he had K'yne until his rider grabbed it and started to feed him. the brown turned his thoughts to Ellibreth and Nimith.

The walk to the tables where the other weyrlings were gathered seemed to take forever, for some reason - Ildresaak couldn't wait, wanted nothing more than to get there and see Corloss and his dragon (Nimith, Ellibreth informed him patiently) and get started on the road to becoming a rider. Faranth, it seemed like everything had happened in a rush, one that made almost no sense. One moment, he had been on the Sands wondering if he was even cut out for life at the Weyr, and the next...he was following in his father's footsteps. He wondered if S'aak would be proud. Ellibreth crooned, pressing her muzzle against Ildresaak's cheek. I'm sure he will be, when you tell him, she murmured. Then, What are you going to call yourself?

...Right. Men elided their names, didn't they. Ildresaak paused, frowning thoughtfully. He had never really thought about it. Somehow, his dreams never really covered that bit. "...I'saak, I guess," he said. Ellibreth cocked her head, considering it, and then her eyes whirled sky blue and she peeped in approval. I'saak. I like it.

"Glad you do," I'saak murmured, rolling it around in his mind, trying to get used to going by something different than what he had been known by for the past twenty turns. It would take some getting used to, he supposed. But riders managed it every day. He could do it.

Nimith! Ellibreth crooned cheerfully, twisting her head over her shoulder and fixing her blue brother with eyes that sparkled a rainbow of excited colors. Oh - your friend Impressed, I'saak, she said, glancing back in the direction they had come to where Psaumith was currently standing with Kaeyne. She trilled and wriggled in Ildresaak's - I'saak's - arms, twisting in an effort to put her feet ground-wards. Let me down? she said, more of a request than a demand, and I'saak complied, setting her gently on the sand. Crooning, Ellibreth lashed her tail, put her head down, and paced toward Nimith. I'm glad you're well, brother, she said quietly, brushing her face against the blue's before twisting back to look at I'saak.

He smiled, glancing a little sheepishly at Corloss and giving him an awkward, shy smile as he reached for one of the waiting buckets of meat. People were handing the meat down to their dragons, rather than letting their dragons eat from the bucket, and so he mimicked the motions, handing Ellibreth a sizable chunk and watching it disappear down her gullet. Her eyes flared red with a sudden hunger she hadn't noticed until that very moment, and she opened her mouth instinctively, begging for more. I'saak complied, smiling. "Thanks," he said aloud, finally looking up at Corloss. "Her name's Ellibreth..."

And there was Kaeyne, with a - "Faranth, how did you -" I'saak sputtered, pointing at Psaumith with a chunk of herdbeast, inciting Ellibreth to lunge and snag it from his hands with a surprisingly delicate precision. "That's a brown," he managed eventually, frowning at Kaeyne. He had seemed so certain of things just then, when they were on the Sands, and yet...here he was. With a brown.

Happy hatching, Psaumith. Ellibreth warbled around a mouthful of meat at the newcomer. I'm glad you found Yours.
PostPosted: Mon Apr 29, 2013 5:09 pm

Happy hatching to you as well, Nimith replied gravely, inclining his head to Psaumith. He reached forward and brushed his blood-spattered muzzle briefly against Ellibreth’s, acknowledging the green’s affection with good-natured tolerance before he returned once again to the terribly important business of eating.

Well, that and making sure that C’ross didn’t try to stand up again and put more stress on that leg. It had only just stopped bleeding, no sense in starting that back up again.

C’ross, for his part, was entirely content to remain on the ground with Nimith sitting sphinxlike beside him. When he got up he was going to have wet sand all over him, but that was fine. He would deal with that later. For now, he was all smiles for Ildresaak – or whatever he was going to call himself now – and his new dragon. “See? Told you I’d see you at the weyrling tables. She’s pretty.”

And indeed she was, if a little on the gawky side. The blue and the brown were both big solidly built hatchlings, and Ell looked even lankier next to their sturdiness. Not that C’ross could accurately judge how big a green hatchling was supposed to be. Hopefully they’d cover that sort of thing in weyrling lessons – he’d hate to end up accidentally stunting Nim’s growth or anything.

“And congratulations to you too – don’t think I caught your name before?” he asked K’yne. “I’m going by C’ross now.” Ildresaak’s shock was puzzling to C’ross, who had missed the entire revelation about sexual orientations and Impressions and all those shenanigans that had just happened. As far as he was concerned, a perfectly ordinary brownrider had just impressed brown and that was Just Fine And Dandy. “Is there a problem with browns?” he asked I’saak, one eyebrow raised.

K'yne bristled. His full lips curled to reveal small white teeth in a sneer. The angry expression died only with Psaumith's headbutt and the heavy brown pressed against his legs. The brown had a deeper patience for this than K'yne; what would hurting them do? Nothing. Woul snapping do him any good? No? Why waste the energy? No one cared about his poor hurt feelings except for K'yne and, if K'yne were to be honest, it did nothing except waste energy he shouldn't have.

"I'm well aware what color he is," K'yne bit out, offering his hungry dragon another bite. Psaumith gobbled it down, hungry but unwilling to taste the food. He was more interested in getting things done and perhaps sleep. K'yne grumbled and scritched at his eyebrow ridges, grumpy again. "His name is Psaumith. He's mine."

Psaumith yawned, gnawing again on some meat before swallowing it down. K'yne rapped his headknob for the cheek and fed him again.

No. You did. K'yne shrugged, his lips pursed into a tight line again. Psaumith hummed contentedly. C'ross, though... K'yne grumbled and side eyed him, studying for a moment. "I'm K'yne. An in the past, browns have only Impressed straight men."

He paused. "Not so much the case anymore."

Kaeyne's response to I'saak actually made him step back, which drew Ellibreth's attention to the young man and brought the green to her feet, eyes whirling yellow-orange concern while she twisted her head to one side and regarded K'yne. You upset him, I'saak.

"I didn't mean to," I'saak answered his dragon in a rush, hurrying more meat into Ellibreth's mouth like it would somehow stall her mindvoice, and looking at Kaeyne apologetically. "I didn't mean to - I was just surprised. I guess things are...different?" He shrugged helplessly. "Or maybe he's different. I like it, though," he added softly. And then Kaeyne was speaking to Corloss - Faranth, I'saak still hadn't asked his new name yet - and I'saak flinched, not sure what his old friend was going to say. Corloss was...Holdbred. And Holders tended to be hidebound. I'saak had shaken some of that - enough that he hadn't been frightened to admit himself to Kaeyne - K'yne now - moments before. And now he had a green, and it seemed like nothing really mattered. Things were different at the Weyr. Things would be better here, for a young man like him.

But Corloss...

He didn't know what Corloss would do. And he didn't want Corloss alienating the first person he had managed to have a friendly conversation with since he had arrived at Trine. The look he cast his friend was hesitant, doubtful.

He confused mine, I think, Ellibreth answered Psaumith with a croon, nudging I'saak's hand hard for more food and snatching the meat he dropped her delicately. But I'saak is better now. He is happy for both of you.

K’yne bristled like he was spoiling for a fight, and I’saak actually backed up, as if physically backing down as well as verbally backing down could somehow defuse the situation. C’ross, for his part, just looked back and forth from one to the other in confusion for a moment.

“So – wait. You’re…?”

Well. He couldn’t be that gay if he’d Impressed a brown. Maybe K’yne had just been confused? The Weyr was full of male greenriders and the like, and that sort of behavior was tolerated around here. That was enough to confuse any young man who wasn’t sure which way his proclivities lay. And it wasn’t as if it was a bad thing if it turned out that he preferred women, that being the natural order of things and all, so he wasn’t sure why K’yne seemed so angry and defensive about it –

C’ross.

C’ross opened his mouth to say something to I’saak and K’yne, then turned to look at Nimith questioningly. The blue’s head was resting on his good knee with every outward appearance of calm affection. But the voice in his head was quiet and steely.

I like you. But so help me Faranth, if you say something dumb right now I will end you. Us. Whichever.

C’ross shut his mouth. After a moment’s further consideration, he opted for awkward avoidance play #47: the abrupt subject change. “So hey, what’s the deal with those last two eggs? Do you think we’re going to see some atypicals? I haven’t really seen a silver or a crimson or anything up close – they didn’t have them back home. I've got Trill, but that's different." Firelizards weren't as impressive as dragons... and he'd seen the silver from a distance at the Candidate lesson, but he'd given Devith a respectful wide berth, same as he'd given the queen a wide berth. You just didn't approach large adult metallic dragons uninvited. Bad idea, that.

[Shenja and Kalteth]
Shenja smiled.
"Yeah. You... hit it right on the nose there." Surprising, not quite real, yes. That was exactly it.
He stroked Kalteth, enjoying her croon before handing her another neat slice of meat. She was so soft, so warm, so just... so. He could feel her mind so close to his. This was perfect, a perfect moment.

Kalteth was momentarily distracted by the compliment looking with happy eyes at Phasianth.

"What?"
she explained with a mental giggle, nuzzling Shenja.
"... He meant you were beautiful. And He is right."

"Yep." he loved Kalteth. He loved her so much.
Another green sister approached and Shenja had to stuff food in her face to get her to put her attention where her stomach said it should be..
"Silly." he whispered, but he meant it with love.
Kalteth thought this was great.
She managed, on her own this time, to refocus her attention on her food.
"I dunno, Kal..." he felt a trill of delight at using a nickname. It felt right to be so familiar, so close. "Some of them seem awfully big..." He was afraid, almost, that in a game of tag one would break a rib. Which would be an adventure, not necessarily a fun one though.

"Er..." it was probably a good thing that he had put the knife down. "You heard that?" heard wasn't exactly the right word.

She was talking in his head. Why was he surprised she could hear his thoughts.
He thought as hard as he could at her. Or tried to.
Kalteth looked at him with some reproach.

"No... Just testing."

[Diedre]

Diedre had nobody to talk to, so she moved a bit to watch the brown. Obviously, that wasn't going to happen. Browns did not impress to girls. It just didn't happen, did it.
Looking back at Shenja she felt a pang of mental anguish that she dared not pay attention to. She looked away, back out to where the new green and the relatively newly-hatched brown wandered. Had he slowed? No, it had just been her imagination.
She toyed with her hair absently, her nerves being run a bit raw by the hatching. No. She would not think about Shenja until this was over. It would have been nice if she could have talked to him, but girls on one side, boys on another. That was how it went. That was tradition.
And now she had nobody to talk to.

The watchful brown impressed, which was good, she supposed, but her brain was occupied trying not to think about things. There... really was no point to hoping, was there?
Hoping didn't bring dragons, thats what they told you. You could hope all you wanted, but that didn't mean that a dragon was out there for you.

Shenja hadn't even cared about standing and look at him... No, don't look at him.

Instead, as the brown impressed, she looked out to the sands. Two eggs, still sitting there. What would come of that?
PostPosted: Mon Apr 29, 2013 8:57 pm

Wykla
Weyrling and dragon were in good hands. She approved as Corloss took the bucket of meat readily. “Congrats again.” With that she headed back over to the feeding station. Surprisingly, or maybe not, a bright and loud blue Impressed to one of the younger healers. This was an interesting bunch.

DraconicFeline

Thrarothar and Bumilth
He placed a small piece into her mouth and watched carefully. His mind was all a tumble. He had Impressed, but it was to a green. And worst M’rine had watched the whole thing. There was no way he could save face now. Not that Thrarothar would give her up for anything in the world.

The green waited patiently for the food to be given. She chewed carefully. Watching the other newly impressed dragons as she did, the table holding the buckets of meat caught her attention. That was tall! She crouched down ready to jump and felt arms around her neck. Green eyes peered up to see the owner of the arms holding her back.

”Oh no. Don’t even think about it Bumilth.” He looked down with a laugh as he’d devised her intent. “You jump up there and you’ll knock all the meat flying. Then everyone would have to eat sandy meat. Plus I don’t want to have to clean it up. Now eat.” Thrarothar proffered more meat to his dragon.

She considered his argument for not jumping. It was so high she’d have a great view. Though now that she looked carefully she could see all the buckets on the table taking up room. Drats! Bumilth opened her mouth and chewed the meat. Distraction came in the form of a green sister. Kalteth! Yes I do! How much later is later?
