Devon KnightlyTheme songI often wonder why I carry all this guilt... "Hero?" called Devon as she walked slowly and cautiously through the park. "Hero, now is NOT the time to play hide-and-go-seek!" Shivering slightly as the wind blew at her, the teen stopped and stomped her foot. "Damn it, Hero, now is NOT a good time! Where are you?!" ...To you it's just a memory, but for me it still lives on

❝Salem Hart...❞ †︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀† A tune that was mellow yet fiendishly deep vibrated between the lips of a man in a tree, stretched out along a wide branch, his arms folded behind his head, resting against the trunk of the tree. He lost himself in the notes, closing his eyes and embracing the feeling of the evening breeze against his skin.
As Salem drifted into a peaceful sleep he was startled by a loud noise and a thump that resonated up the tree trunk. He bolted up-right, nearly losing his balance. "What?" He looked around with half closed eyes for a second before becoming fully awake. "What the hell woke me up?" He pulled himself up and nimbly perched on the branch, near the trunk so that no sudden movement by him would catch someone's eye. His stealthy vision allowed him to see just fine in the dimming evening light. He searched the ground for people. Sure, it was getting late but rebellious teenagers snuck into the park often. But this would only mean he would have to scare them off. Just then he spotted the source of his annoyance; a girl. Salem wondered if she was lost. Running away maybe. Well either way he wouldn't be able to sleep with a brat running around the park causing trouble, he had to do something. He sighed and positioned himself on the branch.
Salem leaped into the air like a pouncing cat. Mid-air his body shifted rapidly into the shape of a toyger cat. With a thud his paws hit the ground, and there he was standing quietly behind the girl, his tail waving curiously in the air. Acting as though he were a clueless cat he let out a hungry meow to get her attention. †︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†

Devon KnightlyTheme songI often wonder why I carry all this guilt... Devon sighed, pulling out her cell phone. At this rate, she would never find the little kitten! Quickly dialing the number of the only person who could help, she shifted in place slightly and waited, the phone pressed to her ear. Unfortunately, it only came to voicemail. "Ryder! Look, I know you're busy and all that, but I really need your help. Hero's gone again and I can't find her and I'm freaking out! Call me as soon as you get this, okay?" Hanging up and slipping the phone into the tight pocket of her dress and sighed, jumping when she heard a meow. Devon turned excitedly, only to frown. "Damn, you're not Hero." Lowering herself, Devon bit her lip and watched the cat. "Have you seen a grey striped kitten?" she asked it, feeling stupid the second the words let her mouth. "God, what am I doing? I must be nuts if I'm talking to a cat. Cats are never helpful when it comes to finding things. This is hopeless." Her head fell forward to rest on her knees, and the girl tried to calm herself. ...To you it's just a memory, but for me it still lives on

❝Salem Hart...❞ †︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀† Salem affectionately thunked his head against the girls' knee when she knelt to him. Annoying as she was, a girl is a girl, and being held is being held. "A gray kitten, huh? Well that shouldn't be too hard to sniff out. If I can get her to follow me maybe I can find her damn cat and get her outta here." He sat for a second and looked around in the ever darker surroundings. His lungs expanded taking in air, and his mouth parted a little bit to taste the scent. "Got it!" he exclaimed happily, but in his form it only came out as a happy-sounding meow. The scent was weak, and would probably fade soon with all this wind, they had to start moving quickly.
Tail twitching and ears perked, Salem pawed the girls' head gently. Sometimes, he loved being an animal but he wished there was an easier way to communicate with humans sometimes. †︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†

Devon KnightlyTheme songI often wonder why I carry all this guilt... The girl rolled her eyes and looked up at the cat. "You've got what?" she asked, pushing her hair back. "Come on, cat, just tell me! I haven't got all day. Stop pawing at me and just tell me, damn it!" Sometimes, she loved being able to communicate with animals, but she often wished they would just talk, instead of thinking she couldn't hear them. ...To you it's just a memory, but for me it still lives on

❝Salem Hart...❞ †︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀† Salem's pupils dilated in fear and his ears flattened to his head, pulling back like any surprised cat would. "Did she just...?" Salem stared up at the girl for a while. "Is this chick nuts? She thinks I'm just a cat but..." Salem's thoughts trailed off. His mind refocused on the task at hand; getting this girl out of the park so he could sleep. Staying in this form was already exhausting him.
It wasn't too hard to pick up the scent of an animal that wasn't a resident of the park, it welled up in Salem's nostrils as he inhaled deeply. Salem let a low guttural growl bubble up his throat and sputter out of his lips. "Fine. C'mon." Somewhere in the back of his mind he was hoping the girl wouldn't consciously respond to it. Salem stood up and trotted past the girl, in the direction the scent led him; to the forest trail behind the playground equipment. †︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†

Devon KnightlyTheme songI often wonder why I carry all this guilt... Following closely, Devon rubbed her arms lightly and sighed. "So, come to this park often?" she asked, trying to make conversation. Distantly, a small grey kitten was playing around in a pile of rubbish, clawing at piece of newspaper. ...To you it's just a memory, but for me it still lives on

❝Salem Hart...❞ †︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀† Salem led the girl through the forest along the trail. By the scent the little cat couldn't have been more than ten or eleven yards away. The closer he got the more he realized the kitten also wreaked of the girls' scent. The smell of her soap, the softener in her clothes. A small patch of hair stood up on Salem's back when the girl spoke directly to him. He thought about ignoring her but he knew there was something different about this girl. Besides, it wasn't often people talked to him, so he should take the company while he could get it, even if it was in animal form. "... I live here." He murmured, pretending to be focused on hunting down the cat.
A quick movement a couple yards away caught Salem's eye. He stopped in his tracks and looked back at the girl following him. It was the kitten. Salem wondered if she could talk to it, too. "Come to think of it, that's probably why she's so worried." †︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†

Devon KnightlyTheme songI often wonder why I carry all this guilt... "Really? The park? But doesn't it get cold at night?" she asked, tilting her head. "I mean, I'm not really one to talk, since my apartment is usually below freezing, but still." Hearing voices, the kitten trotted out of the rubbish, coming towards Devon and Salem. She stopped in front of Salem, tilting her head to the side. "Who are you, and why are you with my human's human friend?" she asked him, her small, cute voice catching Devon's attention. The teen scooped her into her arms, holding her close and scolding her. "Hero, I told you to stop wandering off!" After settling the kitten into her favorite spot in Devon's arms, the girl knelt back to the ground, scratching Salem behind the ears gently. "Thanks, I owe you. Her owner would have been pissed if I lost her." After a moment's thought, Devon set Hero back on the ground and picked up Salem, scratching his stomach lightly, and his sides. "I know cats don't really like humans, but how would you like to go out with me and Hero tomorrow, as a thank you? I'll pay for everything, and you get to pick where we go." ...To you it's just a memory, but for me it still lives on

❝Salem Hart...❞ †︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀† Salem disregarded the girls' last question when the kitten came up to them. His ears flattened at the kitten's remark and he choked back a grumble in his throat "Ungrateful b*****d. She's been worried sick. And if it weren't for my help, you'd probably be lost out here all night." His complaining thoughts continued as the girl fussed over the kitten. "And then where would you be? You look like the pampered type, you probably wouldn't even last three days out here without your human."
"Hm?" Salem glanced up at the girl, his bitter thoughts being interrupted. The sudden contact made the hair on his back stand up and he jumped a little bit. It felt good considering the last time he'd had affection was probably the last time he seen his mom, which was a long time ago since he ran away when he was 7. Salem was about to tell her that she didn't owe him anything but before he could say a word he was suddenly whisked up by the girl. The shock of being lifted up combined with the embarrassment of being scratched made Salem lose his grasp on his current shape. Despite having done it for years, he still had to focus on remaining in one form after a while, it got tiring.
Fur shifted to pale human skin, size expanded, and his cat features melted into his human self. The two came tumbling to the ground under Salem's adult male weight. "Damn it, that could've been a date!" Salem cursed as he hazily pushed himself off the ground, reaching for his scraped elbow. †︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†

Devon KnightlyTheme songI often wonder why I carry all this guilt... "OOF!" Devon wasn't expecting the sudden wait, andhit the ground hard. So hard, in fact, that she thought she saw the cat turn into an attractive male her age. Wait...
"Holy crap, you're human?" she exclaimed, standing and brushing herself off. "Why didn't you say anything, you jerk?!" Spying blood on his arm, however, made Devon soften instantly. "Let me look at that," she said, taking his arm and examining the scrape. Pulling out an antibacterial wipe and a bandaid, she quickly washed the wound and covered it, smiling up at him. "There, all better." ...To you it's just a memory, but for me it still lives on

❝Salem Hart...❞ †︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀† Salem was embarrassed and scared when the girl realized what was going on. His instinct was to run, to jerk away when she grabbed his arm, but he quickly realized that he didn't have the supplies nor the money to take care of his arm and in raven form -his most important form- he wouldn't be able to fly with a wound there.
He stood there for a second with his gaze fixed on the ground. "Thank you." He held his arm out of reflex. "I - ah.... I was just trying to help. I knew if I approached you in human form you'd..." He looked up at the night sky and yearned to fly away from the situation, just leave her standing there. She didn't need him anymore, she found her cat. He could go back to sleep now. He was exhausted. But he couldn't transform with the scrape on his elbow. "Anyways, you found your cat, right? Glad to help... I'll be going now." He started off on the trail back to the front of the park. †︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†

Devon KnightlyTheme songI often wonder why I carry all this guilt... "Wait!" she said, grabbing his hand and holding tightly. "You didn't answer my offer."
Devon was completely and totally serious: she wanted to repay him for his help, human or no. Hero, who was rubbing against his leg, nodded her approval.
"Come on, it'll be fun!" she said, her eyes twinkling with excitement. "Please? We can even bring your girlfriend and make it a date!"
This, of course, was just a way for Devon to see if he had a girlfriend, but she doubted the cute male knew girls well enough to see the ploy. ...To you it's just a memory, but for me it still lives on

❝Salem Hart...❞ †︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀† Salem looked at her over the bridge of his nose, his head only turned to her slightly. He stayed standing away from her. "This is a joke, right?" His eyes slid down to the gray kitten at his leg. He smirked and crouched down to the little cat. "You weren't too friendly with me earlier."
Red judgmental eyes flashed up at the girl. "I don't have a girlfriend. Besides. You don't even know me. I don't even know your name." He stood up and shoved his hands into his pockets. "I helped you so you would leave the park. You woke me up when you were throwing a fit about that cat." He nodded down to the gray kitten. "Trust me, you've got nothing to thank me for." †︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†︿ ﹀†

Devon KnightlyTheme songI often wonder why I carry all this guilt... Devon shrugged, staying in place. "That's easily remedied. I'm Devon Knightly." After offering her name, she stood a little straighter, then nodded determinedly.
"Now then, don't give yourself such little credit. Without you, I'd never have found her. Even if your intentions were less that honorable, I want to repay you. Please, let me take you out?. ...To you it's just a memory, but for me it still lives on
