Gage's Houndour gave Alyss a dirty look. Tossing all your pokeballs sure was the fastest way to show off pokemon. Gage kept the smile on his face, but he was pretty disappointed with what this girl had. The only notable ones she had was her starter - the Chikorita, and the Eevee. The predatory glint in his violet eyes, behind sunglasses, faded away, and he let out a small sigh that came out as a low whistle. "Pretty decent start there, girl. What's your name? I'm Gage Barrows, maybe you've heard of me?" Of course it was unlikely that Alyss ever did, unless she lived in Canalave at one point in her life. But Gage knew what he was doing. Aw, seemed that Houndour didn't like her. She frowned a little at that, but shook the thought off, looking up at Gage. She then nodded at what he mentioned about having a decent start. "I already know that my Blitzle and my Shinx will be able to help me out with the gym since they are both electric types. But the only thing against me right now is the fact that I'm not sure either of them know an electric move yet." She then paused to think about his last statement. "I don't think I've heard of you Gage. But it is nice to meet you. I'm Alyss Nayr. I came from Lilycove in Hoenn."

"Lillycove? That's a lovely town, I've heard. The area around there is really nice. I'd love to visit sometime." Gage nodded knowingly, making small talk, and again grinned. "So electricity is the name of the game, huh. Got to get your pokemon super charged to get your super badge." He laughed a little, and looked again at the Blitzle and the Shinx. They were just babies practically, and even though Gage couldn't quite gage how long Alyss has had them, he could tell they were not in peak fighting form. And hey, Gage was feeling kind of generous right now. Maybe he could do what Des was doing and help out the newbies to bring out their true colors. "So what have you been doing so far to train 'em?" "Ah yes it is a lovely place!" She said, nodding with a smile. "Yeah that would be the plan. Though I figure I am only gonna use my Blitzle in the match since he's the stronger one." She added. "As far as training it really hasn't been that long. I've only started this journey just recently. But I figure that the training has been going fairly well. Xavier listens to me just as well as my Chikorita."

Gage was in a good mood, and he again chuckled. "I didn't ask if you were just training them or not, but have you been doing anything special to help toughen up your pokemon?" Gage wiped away a little tear of amusement from his eye and he put his sunglasses back up on the crown of his head. Houndour sit his rear on the ground, getting bored, so Gage withdrew the Dark pokemon to his pokeball. After replacing the ball back on his belt, he picked out another one, giving an underhand toss for the one for his new shiny Trapinch. As the Trapinch took a look around its new surroundings, opening and closing those huge jaws, Gage explained things more. "It's super rare for a gym leader to only have a single pokemon to battle. You're going to need to use your other pokemon too. And you can't just rely on their electricity. Want to let them practice their zapping on my Trapinch? They should be capable of a little something right now. Don't worry, he won't even feel it." She paused for a bit, thinking about what he said earlier. He had said what she had been doing so far to train them, and so answering whether she was training them or not seemed fitting. She frowned even more as it seemed that this was just something funny to him. Though her attention was drifted away when he brought out a shiny Trapinch. Whoa, something that rare. Though zapping that? None of my Pokemon know an electric move. She took the consideration into effect before shrugging. "I understand he won't feel a thing because of the fact that your Trapinch is part ground. However there wouldn't be any shocking going on. No one has learned an electric move yet."

So Gage just ended up shrugging. He had wanted to see the best Alyss's pokemon could do, but even their best wasn't quite what he had in mind. Pausing to think now, he scratched his chin as he watched the Trapinch skitter sideways and bare its teeth at the Chikorita and Tympole, feeling threatened by the Grass and Water type. Just so long as their was no biting going on, Gage didn't bother with helping the green Trapinch out. Gage stuck his hands in his pockets again, and shifted his weight to one leg. "Alright, no charge and zap. Okay, okay, so you did say they didn't know how to use their electric moves yet, but I didn't know you meant they were THAT low of a level that they don't even know 'em." Gage paused again. "Nothing bad about training them the old fashioned way. How many trainer battles have you competed in? I could use some practice for my pokes too. Well what did this guy expect? She did say that she had only started her journey recently. "The only one closest to getting an electric move is Xavier, and he should just be one level off from Shock Wave." She said, recalling the info. "Although I haven't actually done a trainer battle yet." She looked down over to Alu and Lily who both looked back at the Trapinch, then looked away from him.

"Excellent. Let me go switch out some pokemon real fast." Well, Gage was no Team Celestia Admin, but he knew he had to mix some work with pleasure, or catching rare pokemon were going to come to become too difficult. Battling other trainers was part of being a trainer too. Hell, maybe someday he'd even capture a Legendary pokemon at this rate, but if he slouched on his training where would he be then? Gage laughed again, this time at himself, and he gave Alyss a small salute after he recalled his Trapinch. She was cute, for a snot-nosed kid, and Gage swiftly jogged over to Blyse to switch out his pokemon. He didn't need to train the shiny pokemon he had caught. Those were going to be traded away based on looks, not on their battling power. So no point in toughening them up. To make room and to start making the levels more even, Gage deposited his Houndour. He returned within a few minutes. "So lets get your Xavier up one more level. Your Blitzle against my Pikachu?" Gage next tossed the pokeball for his electric rat, and still half wild, this was the first time his Pikachu had been out of its pokeball since he captured it. Two round black eyes studied Gage, then blinked, and seemed to accept fate. Gage tapped his headset, entering the name for Pikachu to get it to recite the moves his had. He was - and he was already running back to Blyse City before Alyss could say anything. He was an oddball to say in the least. First showing up with strong Pokemon, then asking questions that followed on questions related to the same one. Her head was spinning a little as he was gone. I'm not sure what to think of this guy. She thought, scratching the back of her head. Sure he seemed nice, but there was just something off about him. When he returned, he asked about a battle between her Blitzle and his Pikachu. Just from the looks of it, that Pikachu was strong. She was unsure that Xavier could hold his own, but she put on a smile instead. All she had to do was put herself into the advantage spot. Electric attacks would be useless here due to Lightning Rod. This would be a fun fight. "That's fine with me. And it will be a learning experience as well." Plus, getting new tactics will be a good thing for me. She thought, thinking about her first move. Of course when in doubt, strike with ailments. "Use leer!" Xavier looked back then nodded, staring down at the tiny mouse to lower her defense. After this, she could go in and strike. Gage was an oddball for sure, but genius is always best with a tincture of madness. Now he had it in his head to try to help a trainer who'd actually take some of his advice. Maybe soften her up, get some back up in case he got into a hard spot. Gage was paranoid of what happened back in Canalave happening again. Maybe that Nolan kid would say he had ripped him off. And frankly Gage was so absorbed with what he had to say, Gage had a hard time hearing what Alyss was saying. So then, funny thing about this match up is that Gage knew electricity was useless on either pokemon. Pikachu wasn't sure what to do in this battle though. Whenever she was out in the wild, all she would do was zap whatever got in her way and run away after. Unsure, she glanced over at the human that had captured her after taking the Leer straight on. "Don't look at me, focus on your enemy, Peek. Use your Double Team." The Pikachu was notably nervous and frightened, especially because of the harsh tone Gage took when issuing an order. But she bunched up on all her four legs, and then dashed forwards, using her explosive speed to leave several copy images behind her. Well, things seemed to be looking up so far. She wasn't able to see into her opponents mind, but the fact the leer worked made her feel more confident about the match. The only downside was that this was going to be very annoying since she would have to find the right Pikachu to strike. "That isn't any fun at all for me." She said softly, looking around. They all looked the same. It was time to assess the situation. The Pikachu was frightened due to the Leer and Gage's command. She had also lunged forward, so more than likely one of the images near the front would be the right Pikachu. She kept on thinking this before deciding her command. "Avoid each of the targets Xavier! Quick Attack to get away from them. Don't let any of them catch you!" She called out. Once his Pikachu would reveal herself would be the prime moment to strike. She looked over to Gage and held a smile on her face. She wasn't going to let this battle end badly. Gage was doing some calculations of his own, measuring his Pikachu's strength, size, and speed with the quality of her Double Team move. Hitting record on his headset, he had the time, patient while he also tested the rodent's endurance. Adjusting his tech again, there really was only one move to use since electricity wasn't an issue here. "Peeks, one-two combo, hit it where it hurts." Your guess what Gage meant by that was as good as Pikachu's, but she wanted to battle under her trainer. The real Pikachu broke away from the after-images, darting here and there, and came in for an attack. She had to jump to aim a tail-slam down at the Blitzle's snout. Well her assumption had been wrong on where the Pikachu had been, but she had managed to get Xavier some distance. However it seemed that wasn't enough as the Pikachu did land the hit onto Xavier's nose. Well that's actually good for me. She thought. "Don't let that hit batter you much. Lunge forward and slam that Pikachu away." She called out. Xavier shook his head a little then charged to the Pikachu recovering from air. Pikachu flew back after the Blitzle made contact, no space to dodge while she was in the air. Barely catching herself on her back legs, sliding backwards, the landing did slightly more damage than the attack. "You call that sorry move an attack?!" Gage shouted at his pokemon, adjusting his headset again - not impressed at all. "Use Slam like you mean it, Peeks! Another Double Team now!" Pikachu winced, having thought she didn't do so bad, but she wasn't going to let some human tell her she couldn't attack. Now angry sparks flew from her cheeks, and she really put some effort into her next dash, this time circling around Blitzle. It was going to take some time to close the circle with mirror images, but if she succeeded, it was going to make it even harder to guess next time where the attack was coming from.
