They looked almost like swim shorts, which is why she liked them, they reminded her of back home and surfing the gorgeous curl. It didn't matter how many times Landon would try to outdo her in terms of style, that boy knew nothing of how the ocean curved and flowed like she did. Damn her petite frame. With a light sigh of pondering, the Hawaiian then began to grab some milk, eggs, and fresh fruit like pineapple, mango, and papaya.
"Alright, I'll just make you some pancakes then~" She told him with a smile as she placed everything on the counter before moving the fruit to the sink so she could properly wash them of dirt and other undesirables. As she stood there, her delicate hands scrubbing at the skin of the fruit underneath a luke-warm stream of water, Leilani's mind began to wander back to what she had said earlier, about Andrew coming over to talk to her about what she said the night before. But how could she bring up the topic in a casual manner? There was nothing really casual about the truth of her statehood and how every native on her islands petitioned against her joining the Union. "So what would you like to know first?" She questioned as she turned off the sink and shook her hands dry before moving the fruit to a chopping board and grabbing a knife so she could prepare the pieces in a proper fashion. "About my previous Kingdom and monarchy? How it was like being under Arthur's rule? Or how I truly joined the Union?" She glanced over her shoulder back at him, her messy, ebony curls cascading over her shoulder and down her back like a waterfall. (HawaiianRollarcoasterRide - . . .)

But upon hearing his answer, she nodded her head slowly as she cleared her throat, returning her gaze back to her food preparation as she began to mix the eggs, milk, and flour in a large mixing bowl. "Well, until the 1890s, my Kingdom of Hawaiʻi was an independent sovereign state, recognized by the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Japan, and Germany," She began as she moved to turn on the stove, bending at the waist so she could watch the flame as it flickered on before adjusting it to the correct amount that she needed. "My people lived peacefully with the missionaries that had come over from America for years, since they had brought over religion and education that my people hadn't recieved before. It was a really great feeling to be able to create my own alphabet and everything." She smiled to herself as she continued. "But on June 30, 1887, I remember that day well, a meeting of residents including the armed militia of the Honolulu Rifles and politicians who later formed the Reform Party of the Hawaiian Kingdom demanded my King Kalākaua to dismiss his own government cabinet headed by Walter M. Gibson. I don't know if you remember him, but he was my prime minister at the time and a dear friend. He was one of the only Americans who sided with my people to try to keep our Monarchy from falling to the control of the United States."
The memory of Walter M. Gibson was strong with Leilani because he was such a beloved man to her native people. He was kind and gentle but fair and intelligent and it was a day day to hear that once she fell to statehood, that he fled to San Francisco and died a penniless man. But she was still glad that she was able to find his body and give him a proper burial alongside her people. He was 'ohana to her, that much was sure. "The meeting called for a new constitution, even though I already had my own and it was very well-written." She paused for a moment as she mixed in the chopped up bits of fruit into the pancake mix and continued to mix it with a wooden spoon. "The next morning, a shipment of arms was discovered and the Honolulu Rifles took control and arrested Gibson for planning a rebellion. Kalākaua called in US Minister George W. Merrill, and the British, French, Portuguese and Japanese representatives and requested help but they all suggested he comply with any demands...which he did." She swallowed a lump in her throat at the memory as her demeanor saddened, pouring some of the mix into the hot pan as she finally began to cook the pancakes.
"Over less than a week, the new constitution was drafted by a group of lawyers, most were members of the Hawaiian League, which was a group of men actually in favor of ending the Kingdom and annexation by the United States. Eventually, my King Kalākaua signed the document, despite arguments over the scope of the changes. It created a constitutional monarchy, stripping the King of most of his personal authority, empowering the legislature and cabinet of the government. This is called the "Bayonet Constitution" nowadays because of the threat of force used to gain Kalākaua's cooperation. At the time Kalākaua had been forced to sign the constitution under threat of arms, military rifles held to his head just in case he tried to stage one last rebellion." She almost sniffled, but continued as she flipped the pancakes over so they wouldn't burn. "They stripped my people of voting rights, their property, and their heritage. And although King Kalākaua's sister, Queen Liliʻuokalani, assumed the throne after his death and tried to regain my monarchy with a noted rebellion, it was too late. The Hawaiian League overthrew her power by dismantling my monarchy and seizing all of my goverment buildings. Pearl Harbor was seized as a new American military base and I was officially granted statehood."
Leilani paused once more as she lifted the pancakes out of the pan with her spatula before placing them in a nice stack on a plate she provided for Andrew. "I know that was a rather long and detailed history, but I wanted you to know the truth about how I became a part of the Union," She had turned around at this point with a slightly hallow smile as she placed the plate on the table before him before providing him with utensils, syrup, butter, and other things he might need that she could provide at the moment. Her shoulder strap had fallen off and was hanging off her shoulder, but she quickly fixed it with her thumb before it could reveal anything to him. Taking a seat across from him, she then placed her elbows on the table before interlocking her fingers and resting her chin upon the bridge she made with them. "And I know what I said might have wounded you, saying that I never wanted to be part of your family. But in all honesty, at the time, I hated every single one of you for subjecting me to that kind of humiliating betrayal. My people welcomed your founders and businessmen with open arms and they all used me for personal gains while ripping my identity from me. But..." She paused once more, staring up at him with those beautiful eyes of hers, a soft pink hue now kissing at her cheeks. "I'm still happy that I've finally gotten to know the lot of you better. You're not as bad as I lead myself to believe and although I might not be 'true sister', I just hope that after everything that we've been through, you don't think of me any differently." The State of Tennessee ☀Andrew S. Andrew didn't even recall Hawaii's people being part of the debate at the time as if her monarchy had been so inconsequential in their eyes they conveniently forgot about it all together. Instead he remembered the debate being about how Leilani joining would effect their politics rather than what was happening to her. They had all been so incredibly selfish. Andrew hesitated when Leilani looked him in the eyes and for a moment was lost in their blue depths. They looked so vibrant and timeless in the weak morning sun that he felt as if he was looking back into a world that was too pure for someone like him to enter. It was like he was seeing Leilani for the first time and it hurt. He faltered as his face turned red although he wasn't sure if it was from shame or something else as he turned his head away. How could he not think of her differently now? Everything he thought he had known about her--which was limited from the start--had been a lie perpetuated by people who had put her on a pedestal either for her tropical beauty or the novelty of her rare pool of demographics. By thinking of her as his baby sister, who needed his care and protection, had he been any different from the people who belittled her sovereignty and independence? "I'm sorry," he mumbled softly after what felt like an eternity while he struggled with this new revelation about how condescending he had been to her. "I... I didn't mean to talk down to you... I really didn't." Tennessee opened his mouth and almost tried to explain he had thought he had been helping her, but in light of all she had said that felt like nothing more than excuses to justify his bigotry. He couldn't look at her now knowing the degree of his hypocrisy and ignorance when he claimed he wanted her to be part of his family. When he got mad at her for not acting like a part of the family he really had been the same as those men who tried to destroy and cover up her true culture... "I'm so sorry, Leilani..." She had seen Andrew snap on seemingly nothing before and she didn't know if he would pursue Alfred for everything he did to her or sit and cry or something else along those lines. But as his lips finally parted, only after he looked away with a red blush spreading across his cheeks, the island state tilted her head to one side, blinking slowly as she listened to his apology.
As she was about to say something in return, she was then haulted by the rest of his sentiment. The same amount of guilt that was emitting through his tone of voice and actions.
"Andrew," Leilani said in a voice just above a whisper as she lifted her head from her hands and moved so she could stand up, pushing her chair back. Her hand fell from his cheek to the base of his neck, her fingertips brushing against some of the baby hair that had curled outwards. Her other hand found itself dislodged from his hand before being pressed against his other shoulder for support. If there was one thing that she didn't want to happen at the moment, it was all of this causing them to fall over and get hurt. Her center of gravity had been shifted forward along with her right leg, which had been picked up from its place and knelt over Tennessee's lap as he pulled her into him. Now sitting upon the lap of the fellow state, the Hawaiian's blush deepened at least a few shades of red as she watched him plunge his face into the cleavage of her free, supple breasts.
"A-Andrew," She breathed, finding this to be very uncharacteristic of him, or at least what she had grown to know him as. A few of her ebony curls had shifted, falling over her shoulder and resting on either sides of his cheeks as he hugged her to him. In this moment of surprise, she felt her heart begin to race once more as her general demeanor became weaker from the shock of it all. But as he spoke to her, she lowered her chin so she could make eye contact with him once more, the blush continuing to kiss at her tanned cheeks. "You'll try to...?" She had attempted to repeat after him before he finished his sentence. It took some effort from him, and she could see that clearly, but once it was said, Leilani sat there upon his lap, speechless.
Everything whirred in her mind at this, as she stared into those chocolate brown eyes of his. Is he serious? She had questioned in her mind as she blinked down at him before adverting her eyes to the side and down at the ground, herself now having a turn at being the embarrassed one. He's really willing to let me be myself and not just as I'm supposed to be. But what can I say back to that? The island state struggled to find a proper response that would be able to satisfy the emotional level this conversation had gone in, but only one thing came to mind.
Turning her head back to face his own, Leilani's eyes softened as her smile returned, dancing across her lips beautifully. She moved the hand that was propped against his shoulder back to his face, as the other continued to play with the small hairs on the base of his neck whistfully. "Thank you," She whispered to him as she moved her hand to his forehead, easing some of his brunette locks from the area before she leaned forward, eyes closed, and kissed at his forehead. "Thank you so much Andrew. I really, really appreciate it. I know it's not easy for you to say or do, but I can't properly express the elation I feel." She whispered against the skin of his forehead before she kissed it once more, basically to seal everything that she had said into his memory before she pulled back, still fine with his face embedded into her coastline as her hand coupled with the other around his neck.
"Now," She began with a cute giggle that shook her coastline slightly, enjoying the rather inimate contact from Tennessee that she was recieving. "Would you like to eat your breakfast? I'm sure you must be starving." She said to him in a soft tone, interlocking her fingers once more behind his neck. She wasn't sure what exactly made being with Andrew like this so comforting and enjoyable, but she definitely knew that it was a feeling that made her feel loved and accepted. She wasn't really sure if she would be able to repeat this kind of contact with anyone else but him at the moment, mainly because Andrew was the one whom she had developed the closest relationship to thus far. She had placed the skillet, spatula, mixing bowl, and other items she had used into the sink before filling them up with water to soak, so scrubbing them later wouldn't be such a grueling task. She gripped onto the counter as she watched everything fill up with water, biting the inside of her cheek, just as she always did out of nervousness, before she cleared her throat and answered his question.
"I would actually like to know everything about you, but from the beginning this time," Leilani turned around, her plate stacked with pancakes in her hands, before she moved forward to the table and sat down across from him. Picking up some mango-flavored syrup, the Hawaiian then poured it over her breakfast as she let out a sigh through her nose. "So how about you tell me about what kind of place you were like before the explorers arrived, you were some sort of territory by then right? Or were you settled just like the rest of the original colonies?" (HawaiianRollarcoasterRide - . . .)

The State of Tennessee ☀Andrew S. Hickory☀ ♪ ♫ ♪ ♫ ♪ ♫ ♪ ♫ ♪ ♫ ♪ ♫ ♪ ♫ ♪ ♫ ♪ ♫ ♪ "Um, well... Kinda both," Andrew muttered awkwardly not really knowing how to explain the peculiar situation of his birth. He loaded his pancakes with the flavored syrup as well while he tried to think of what his earliest memory was. "I guess it was 'round 1769 or so... That's when I met Mr. Bean," he mused. "He told me I was part of Virginia and most of the other people who came over the mountains to live with us agreed. It wasn't 'till Cherokee noticed me nearly two years later and told Virginia I was on their land that a colony even knew I was there." Andrew was quiet for a moment as he recalled the British Indian Agents who were sent to investigate him as a child. He wasn't too certain how to talk about his first encounter with England, but there was obvious tension in his shoulders at the memory and he stopped eating. "That's when the lobsterback showed up," he said. "He barely took a look at me before sayin' I was dangerous an' me just livin' was an act of defiance. Then he ordered me to be disbanded..." Tennessee sat there a moment as he recalled when the person he had always been told by his people was his 'mother country' greeted him with a death sentence. Though he felt a little better after talking with Arthur it was still an unpleasant memory. The boy shook his head as he recalled he was still talking to Hawaii and blushed at himself for getting distracted by the old memories. "A-Anyhow, my leaders asked Virginia and North Carolina if I could join with one of them. Virginia said I was North Carolina's problem an' North Carolina's governor wanted nothin' to do with an illegal settlement like me an' instead threatened my people," Andrew said a bit more casually as he carved up his pancakes. "So, I wound up goin' to Cherokee and askin' to rent land. Chief Attakullakulla said I could stay and I lived by myself 'till North Carolina finally adopted me in 1777 or somethin' like that. Some people called me a separate State or Republic, but I just called myself the Watauga Association..." He scarfed down a few more bites of his breakfast as he finished up his story before looking back to Leilani and feeling a little embarrassed. "Didn't have nothin' as fancy as a king or queen, though..." he muttered. "Most of the colonies tried to keep their distance from me 'cause England told 'em to and they thought I was a dangerous person for livin' alone in the mountains like that." Tennessee poked lightly at his plate with his fork and glanced back down again, trying to act nonchalant about basically admitting he spent the first eight years of his life being rejected, threatened and feared by the family he was supposedly related to. ♪ ♫ ♪ ♫ ♪ ♫ ♪ ♫ ♪ ♫ ♪ ♫ ♪ ♫ ♪ ♫ ♪ ♫ ♪ Grade 9 The Volunteer <> <>

【 Mahalo nui ia Ke Ali`i wahine 】 〖 `O Lili`ulani `O ka Wo hi ku 〗 Leilani Kamea Malu Freshmen ﹙ There’s no place I’d rather be ﹚ x﹙ Then on my surfboard out at sea ﹚ xx﹙ Lingering in the ocean blue ﹚ xxx﹙And If I had one wish come true ﹚ The Hawaiian's eyes softened slightly as she listened to Tennessee's rather sad tale of how he came into existence. Although she wanted to just sit there and stare, she found herself glancing away from him just as often as he was to her at the moment. She picked up her silverware, her ears still perked so she could drink in every last detail, before beginning to carve into her own stack of pancakes. She cut each into a small triangular piece before she stabbed the top two layers with her fork. With ease, she was able to pick up the pieces and place them in her mouth, making a small sound of elation as she found her pancakes to be even better than she originally thought.
But this small triumph in her mind became overshadowed by what Andrew told her next. No one wanted him. Not Arthur, not Virginia, not Charlotte. Nobody. He was isolated from the world, just like she was. But the only difference between their two stories was that she was isolated by her geographic location and partially by choice, but Andrew, he was isolated because they thought of him as a threat and thought that it was best to keep him at a safe enough distance away. What a sad childhood to have grown up in!
Leilani stabbed at her pancakes once more as she watched him make eye contact with her once more as he began to wrap his story up. After placing them in her mouth so she could begin chewing, she then pointed her fork in his direction as she waited to swallow. Once she did, she cleared her throat before sighing, wiggling the fork a little bit as she looked back to him. "Andrew," She began once she swallowed, picking up her glass of orange juice before she gulped down a few sips so she wouldn't choke. "I'm sorry to hear you had such a rough start. I honestly wouldn't have thought you went through something like that, especially with all of the love and affection you recieve from Charlotte, Christian, and the rest of those eastern states." She said to him as she lowered her fork to pick up a few more pieces before raising them to her lips. "But I'm also happy to hear that the natives that you mainlanders had were just as accomodating as my own." She smiled softly at this before she popped the pieces into her mouth and enjoyed every last bite of it. (HawaiianRollarcoasterRide - . . .)
