She could tell he was slightly uncomfortable but that just made him cute. She liked shy guys. Ok so she liked MOST guys but that was beside the point. So, he was a guardian animal just like her. Interesting. She had never met a horse guardian. But then again horses were protective of their herd so why not? His questions were normal, she was more than happy to answer them.

"I live with my family group; parents, siblings, aunts, uncles. That sort of thing. We travel about the lands in a pride. The only time we are solitary is when we are given a guardian assignment. Then whomever is choosen will leave the tribe until his or her assignment is complete," she said.

This was why so many thought Sphnix's were solitary. Whenver they encountered one it was alone. But rarely were two ever needed to guard something. However some of her kind had been left for thousands of years to guard something, human memories were so small. Her father had told her stories of a distant cousin who was STILL guarding an ancient temple. His only reprieve was when they came to visit every 20 years or so. Ah well. One day she would get an assignment and terrorize anyone who tried to infiltrate her guarded area.

"I have friends outside my clan but mostly the undead, as they are our natural friends. Mummies and such you know," she grinned. It was a natural and accpeted friendship between her kind and mummies. Cats were the guradians of the underworld and mummies respected them. In return the sphnix would guard the vunerable mummy until it was strong enough to take care of itself. It was this partnership that gave her resistance to hexes and curses. Mummies weren't always good at their spells in the beginning.

It wasn't really shyness that made Petro less-than-relaxed about the lack of distance between him and Nefertari. He just didn't want anyone near his mane. Of course it could be misconstrued as shyness, and he'd rather it be that than the real reason, which was something he'd prefer to keep under wraps.

"We don't really travel much. Usually it's to discuss negotiations with the other clans or to deal with trouble within the forest. That's what my uncles and aunts tell me. Too young to tag along, they said," was that a hint of annoyance in his voice? No. Not a hint. Petro really hated it when they used that reasoning to get him to stay behind.

Speaking of under wraps, Petro shook his head, "No, I wouldn't know. It's why I asked."

"Ah I see. That must be very annoying for your age to be used against you when you merely wish experience. Thankfully my family wishes all to see what life is like. Good or bad, harsh or gentle; it must be seen so one is prepared," she smiled sweetly at him. She felt bad for the boil. How annoying she would be if her parents had refused to take her places merely because she was too young. Her brothers had tried that once and she had snuck out anyway. Then they had gotten in trouble for not telling their parents were they had gone with me. She giggled to herself a bit then looked back to the horse.

"Oh mummies are interesting creatures! Bit wobbly with thier magic at first but they get better with practice. My best ghouldfriend is Haspet, she can cast some wicked curses," she laughed a bit. She remembered the time she and Has had been out when a boy mummy had pulled out one of Tari's feathers. Has and cursed him to burp feathers for a whole day. It had been very hilarious.

"So you don't get to meet any other creatures? Not even ghosts and such?" that surprised her. Most creatures at least had some contact with others. She was also not getting any closer to him. She realised he must have that 'personal space' mentality. Then again horses didn't liked to be pinned. The freedom of running was usually their preference.

"It is infuriating," Petro nodded with a frown. "Colts and fillies aren't going to say or do much. Just watch. But we gotta go through a rite of passage before the elders think we'd be ready first."

Which wasn't going to be for a long, long time.

"What do mummies look like?" he'd never heard of them in his clan's neck of the forest. Maybe he had a mummy friend and they just called them something else where he was from. "Tikbalangs like to keep to ourselves. We have ties with some reapers and dwarves, though. Not so much the undead or ghosts. But we don't turn them away if they need sanctuary."

"Ah you have a rite of passage too!" Tari's face lit up. She was so excited to meet another creature that went through a rite of adulthood. "We sphnix have one as well. All cubs must go through their Rite of Pride. It's when we gain the ability to become a fully formed Sphnix. Not the little form here," she motioned to herself. Normaly Sphnix were huge creatures with terrifying roars. Tari thought she had the roar practiced pretty good herself.

"Hmm, well mummies were once humans but have come back from the dead. They can be many things but they are all preserved bodies in some shape or form. In my country, mummies are bound in linen and preserved with oils and other secret chemicals. Most have cursing or hexing abilities. But I've heard of other mummies preserved in bogs, ice, and even regular sand," she thought as she spoke, trying to remember all she had learned about mummies. They were a varied group but she liked her kind the best, they smelled better due to the oils they were preserved with.

'Sphinx have ties with many creatures. Mummies, were-creatures, ghosts, even some crafted creatures. It depends on where the pride travels," she nodded. She shivered even under her feathers, "I do wish they'd do something about the window. But tell me about your rite? Do you have to battle or go on a quest of some sort?"

Tahki had noticed it was cooler in the cabin but it didn't make her shiver all that much. The gryphon wasn't completely sure why it seemed to be bothering as many students as it was. Tahki took the candy out of her pocket and took her jacket off and handed it to the Sphinx.

"This should keep you warm," Tahki told her friend. Even with out a jacket the exposed part of the cabin didn't make the gryphon shiver. Tahki was just fine.

((gonna head off to bed after this post))

Petro looked pretty damn pleased himself. He hadn't expected to run into another monster who was also a guardian of sorts, granted he hadn't seen for himself what sphinxes guarded but it was still an honorable thing to do. He studied the ghoul, wondering how large they must really be if her current form was considered little and if they could rival those of his elders.

"Bound in linen?" he canted his head, "Like that one?" he asked, gesturing towards the small mummy he'd seen in the train car.

"Sounds like you've met a whole lot of other creatures." Way to state the obvious Petro. When the sphinx shivered and remarked about the window, the boil suggested "Maybe we should go closer to the others?" It didn't occur to Petro to offer his own body heat, seeing as how he too felt the chill. At the question about his rite of passage, the tikbalang looked thoughtful for a moment. He wasn't certain sharing too much information about his specie was a good idea, but he figured since she was as also a guardian creature she would know and understand the importance of keeping things in confidence. He wouldn't be repeating what she'd told him, but all the same he decided to make it clear, "I'd appreciate it if you didn't share this with anyone else." His voice dropped low when the other winged ghoul (there were a lot of winged ones, he realized) offered her jacket to the sphinx. "My kind goes on a journey that tests our minds and bodies. The actual destination varies for each and we're not always guaranteed to return. When we come back with proof of our success, we are given our adult name depending on our journey."

He folded his arms across his chest, though his skin was still prickled with goosebumps, it hadn't been as bad as before Tari's wing wrapped around him. He turned his attention towards the gryphon, "You aren't bothered by the cold?"
PostPosted: Sun Dec 12, 2010 10:05 am

"Oh! Why yes that is a mummy. Quite a cute thing," she giggled. She was surprised she hadn't noticed it before but she had been distracted by meeting her fellow lion/eagle Tahki. Speaking off her new friend was already showing a sign of friendship Tari would never forget. Tari beamed at the offer of the jacket and took it gratefully. She hated being cold and hadn't packed any warm clothing. She didn't think she really owned any. She turned back to her new friend as he talked about his rite. She understood the need of secrecy, after all Sphnix kept the secret of their ultimate riddle.

"That sound similar to ours without the journey. We must first test our bodies and defeat at least three adults in battle. Then we must test our minds by coming up with a riddle that our Pride Elder can't solve. Once we do we are allowed in the Temple of Bast and we achieve our adult form," she nodded as if everyone did that. Her body was most definately ready. She could beat up all her brothers and sisters already. But her mind was another matter. Coming up with a riddle that her grandmother hadn't heard was difficult. But it was designed to be, otherwise the sphnix could easily be defeated by an two-bit hero that wandered by.

"A true sphnix stands as high as two men with a wing span of at least four men. Our roars can be heard across the sands and all thieves steer clear of we protect less they feel the sting of our claws," she recited from heart the words of her grandmother. She spoke this to all the cubs late at night around the fire. She would trasnform and give a mighty roar just to prove the point. She had been so impressed when she was younger, now she was determined to be the best Sphnix in her clan.

Once the adrenaline has subsided, the cold began to settle in. While he might have lived in the mountains and snow, Haku wasn't a creature that thrived in that sort of weather - it was purely because his parents loved the snow that they lived there at all. Shivering, he tugged his jacket closer and pulled his long tail about his neck like a makeshift scarf, wishing for a thicker coat.

Finished with that, he realized the trio he was conversing with earlier had struck up another topic to discuss, which he listened to with quiet curiosity. Something about creatures in "Egypt" and rites of passage from what the sphinx was talking about (he didn't catch much of what Petro said due to the wind in his ears and the commotion for that gift the creature left behind). Moving away from the open window, he clutched at his not!scarf and prepared himself for some choice comments about it.

"I t-take back what I said earlier. Some heat would be nice now," he mumbled as his attempt to re-join, wishing he had the resistance Tahki did against the cold. Stripping in the wind, to think! He kept his mind busy by continuing to listen to the ghoul's story about . . .

. . . Dear Jack. He could only wish his family prepared him as much. >>

As Laiha made a blind reach for the object, she might have been rather surprised to find that it was right in her hand. Well, the only humane thing to do with a seemingly inanimate trinket at this point was to either stick it on the roof of the train as mistletoe, or keep it with them at all times.

The door opened behind them, and in the cabin appeared a motley assortment of gnomes. They were wearing tweed, and one of them had the world's tiniest violin. As violin gnome started playing, the rest of the gnomes began handing out handkerchiefs, knives, forks, and spatulas.

"We will be serving your meal now," explained Spatula gnome, "Which consists of young pathling, tenderized in a light pumpkin cream, with your choice of greens, chilled blood, or pickled eyeballs."

Another gnome took out a few candles and lit them on each makeshift 'table' (mostly consisting of upturned luggage). Well, who died and gave this car the first class treatment?

A logical student may have recognized the options. Laiha only had a moment to laugh in triumph and clutch the little trinket to her chest before the car door opened again. She gasped and looked up, eyes narrowing. Was something else coming to attack them all? Of course, what she saw instead were delicious, delicious gno-- FOOD.

Oh thank jack they were bringing food! Food to eat! Certainly it would be fancy food, which Laiha was not particularly fond of or opposed to. She hastily shoved the skulls and leaves into her pocket and dove at the nearest "table" to take her seat. She paid no mind to her companions, the thought of food excited her too far. She was so anxious she nearly ate a candle, flame and all.

[[ It took me another person to remind me Cupid was one of Santa's reindeer. Clearly I am the best ever. |D Also anyone can feel free to sit with Laiha, I promise she won't bite (them). ]]

Nefertari was about to agree with Haku when the gnomes made their entrance. She blinked as they suddenly started setting up 'tables' with candles and some delicious sounding food. She giggled a bit and sat down around one large piece of luggage. She arranged her own silverware around her area then placed her napkin in her lap. She may be part lion but she had manners. At least until the meat got here, then she was a bit more wild. She motioned for Tahki, Haku, and Tor to join her.

"Well shall we adjourn to the dinning table my goof friends?" she laughed a bit. Now that she was closer to the floor, the wind wasn't so bad so she was a bit warmer.

|~| I would make Haku do so if he wasn't adverse to poor Laiha's hostility from earlier and if Nef hadn't invited. 8D; Though feel free to let her dive at, say, his food when she's done with hers. He's a slow eater! Or anything to antagonize him really, like . . . getting food on his clothes. XD |~|

He bristled a touch as the three-eyed girl dove at a table near him, half thinking she was going to lunge at him to eat; and how right he might have been had it not been for the gnomes! Though he had never heard of "pathlings" before . . . It sounded exotic.

"My pleasure," Haku said in return as he sat, trying to situate himself so that he was facing most of the students; notably he was on his knees rather than indian style, hands in his lap. The main problem, though, was his tail: where to keep it so it wasn't occupying so much space, yet not in the way? He settled for tucking it between his body and the ice-cold wall, which made him shiver violently once. Anything for food, he supposed.

An odd word, though, "friends." Was he now? Huh . . .

He supposed it was a nice thing to think about. All the nicer knowing first class meals were heading their way! Although -

"What are pathlings?"

The loss only seemed to trouble the teen slightly, mostly because she didn’t know what it was, exactly. It was probably best that she hadn't gotten a hold of those skulls and bells anyway since material like that, unless it benefited her in courting individuals, would have been dropped or lost during the ride.

As several gnomes worked their magic around the room Natalia took a moment to decide what it was she wanted to do next. Seeing as she hadn't made any friends at all BUT had managed to get a response from the devourer, she opted to stick to what she was (vaguely) familiar with (for now) and slid from her seat, only to plop beside Laiha. To make things much more awkward, or for Natalia to make it known that she wanted the others attention, she sat and faced the purple creature.

How lovely, thoughts seemed to race even when she wanted to engage in conversation, they were setting up the cart to look classy...

Without warning, she spoke to Laiha with the same, ever-present smirk fixed to her pale pink lips. "I see you won something finally. Congratulations...” Through her teeth, a pink tongue flicked out and pursed each lip. Although not particularly attracted to the purple thing, she had definitely grown fonder from simply watching the girl work. Turning forward to scoot her chair in, the monster continued to speak but chose to keep her gaze on the candle light.

Sepheran hadn't noticed the slight chill until he was slowly nodding off. Being a cold-blooded monster Sepheran never did well with the cold. It wasn't long until he had drifted into a light sleep.

Sepheran didn't even seem to stir when food had begun to be brought in by the gnomes, and that's saying something. If there was one thing Sepheran enjoyed it was a nice warm meal in his belly. Instead he sat alone in one of the vacant seats his cold body slumped slightly. Well...luckily the candles might provide some heat that will end up warming the car enough for him to wake up in time to grab some leftovers or something.
