All he could hear was laughter inside his head. It took every ounce of his long practiced control to mask his own amusement behind wide eyes and murmured shock. This was just too perfect.

"Telgar behold!" Kannaroth cried to any dragons who might happen to be close to her - but not so loud as to reach and disturb the hatchlings - and then more specifically to Hers and her sisters. "A new queen is born! Let us bow before her! Let us bask in her glory! Let us ignore what she keeps at the base of her tail and close our eyes when she chases other female dragons, a queen is born!" This was just about the best thing ever. Everyone had been fawning over that egg, praising it, ogling it and it was a bronze! "Never before has there been such a queen," the small green crowed, "be stunned by her unmatched beauty. A new queen is born; the future of Telgar is secure!" She was going to be laughing about this one for turns!

"Hush!" Y'kar gave mental grin, and nudged his lifemate's mind to quiet her. "Don't distract me, I want to see which blushing girl this queen of ours selects, I wouldn't miss seeing our future weyrwoman chosen."

Honestly she wanted to see it too, so Kannaroth calmed herself and returned regarding the sands with amused interest. Still, she couldn't resist one last chuckle. "Bow to the queen sisters," she sent out privately to Roesth and Nellath, "we'll not see another like her anytime soon!"

Yulu had to look at the clutch the moment the Golden Egg started to crack. . . .and she had to cover her own mouth to keep from laughing the moment a beautiful...Bronze emerged onto the Sands. It was no Queen at all, the whole Weyr had been fooled into believing so, and she openly cackled at the disappointment everyone in the Weyr must be feeling.

"Dorath's curse is still upon this place no matter what, eh? Suits well enough, even with a new Queen."

You should watch what you say.

The voice that chimed in her head made Yulu nearly jump again, his heart thudding in her chest as she was still not used to such contact, and she looked over at her lifemate who stared back with weary eyes.

"I'll say what I mean and mean what I say. I've no fear here, now that I have you."

Kannaroth's comments certainly do not fall on deaf ears. Kaveth's head whipped around to stare at the green, eyes red as she bellowed. Malkai's expression soured, but she held out a hand to the gold dragon. They could deal with the smart mouthed green later.

The bronze moved slowly through the remains of the rest of his clutch's egg shells, quite a different figure than the clumsy Skananth and the more determined Pipith. Surprisingly, he didn't move straight into the group of remaining boys. Instead, he had his eyes on the girls, who had been expecting him to be their chosen life partner. He moved quietly through the crowd, wings tucked close to his body so as not to knock any of them over. Every girl near him received a small touch from his snout. An apology perhaps?

Certain girls he seemed to remember better than others. He lingered a little beside Canoake, watching her with one blue eye before he moved on to Layla. The bronze butted her gently with his nose, shuffled his wings, and finally turned to look towards the boys.

His decision was easy.

Valentine-Mine, come with your Morgath. Our clutchmates await us.

In all the hustle and bustle that the surprise bronze had caused, the Streaked Sky Egg had burst open, revealing a little blue. He seemed not to mind being out of sight, however. The blue practically slunk along the sands, his body low to the ground as he made his way towards the boys. A boy made the mistake of nearly backing into him, no doubt his eyes still on Morgath, and the hatchling snapped. That got the boy's attention and he leapt back with a start as the little blue took a nice bite out of his ankles.

Realizing he'd been spotted the blue hissed, fanning his wings and backing away from the male candidates. Go away!

Canoake held her breath as the egg finally shook itself and began to crack. This was it, the gold was finally going to hatch and make her life's match. The Telgar beauty waited, breath held as she tried not to get her hope's up. She refrained from stepping forward to make herself known and it was a good thing she did not.

As the egg cracked, a wondrous beast broke free. Shaking free of its membrane and shell fragments, the dragon stared at the dame before it. Slowly with confidence, it bowed and turned to face the crowd.

Bronze.

Canoake let go of her breath and tried not to cry. No! It couldn't be, could it? Maybe...maybe the shade was just dark or maybe it was wet from birth. However, the fact registered and imprinted itself on her brain. Telgar's supposed gold was a bronze. Handsome, lovely, respectful... But still a bronze. Her fists were balled up on her sides as she focused on the other egg that was left.

Just maybe.

The largest egg didn't always have to be the gold, did it? Oh, how she didn't want to give up her hopes of Impression. Canoake had chosen to stay at Telgar to take her chances on a gold egg. Maybe it was still there? Even if she didn't get the gold, maybe a green? It took all of her inner strength not to allow tears to run down her cheeks. Still a chance, still hope. But for now, Canoake's naturally inquisitive nature was wondering...

Who would he Impress?

EDITED IN:

As the bronze passed her, Canoake had the chance to feel his soft skin. He really was a lovely thiing. Canoake promised herself she would make sure to get on his rider's good side. He knew who his was meant to be and he went to someone that Canoake only knew by name: Valentine. This fellow, she would watch with interest.

And at last, the other egg hatched. A blue. An angry but striking blue. Canoake had been drawn to during the Touching. And when a boy got in its way, she could only grimace as he lost flesh.

Oh well. That is how some hatchings went. But then, he swung towards the ladies. Raising an eyebrow, she smirked. Wasn't this interesting? This one had opinions about males that she shared. Not good for anything really.

Tofir watched the bronze Impress to another young man he didn't know well. It was a little frustrating to realize that for all his efforts to interview as many candidates as possible, he'd managed to miss all of the ones who'd Impressed so far except for Yulu. He wondered whether she'd shorten her name in the dragonrider honorific, or if she'd leave it as it was.

It was as he was pondering this that a blue slunk from the remaining egg and made his way toward the boys. He frowned at the blue's snap, wondering whether that candidate would require immediate aid, or if he could last until the blue Impressed. Since he didn't immediately fall over, it didn't seem he had been hamstrung, which was good, but he might still be in some discomfort. Might. Probably was, in fact, and considering he was on sand cleaning that wound out would be exceedingly unpleasant.

He glanced at the healer in charge questioningly and took a few steps onto the sands before he received in answer a sharp head shake. No. He wasn't needed there. All right then. The boy would just have to wait in discomfort until the hatching was over. Tofir didn't envy him. For the first time since the hatching started he tried to influence one of the dragonets. He thought very hard that the blue should find his person soon, so that any injuries which occurred could be handled.

Marcillus grinned when the bronze moved by the girls and returned the touch with a brief one of her own before she clapped for Valentine. That was a lifemate to be proud of, even with the cat-calls of the dragons around them. Marcillus shot a glare at the adolescent green before turning her attention back to the sands and realized there was an angry blue snarling at the boys.

What? Why? She tilted her head to the side, nervous once more. Would that one claw through the candidates? The only reason she didn't back away was because expectations demanded the Candidates present themselves in a confident manner.

Still... an angry dragon, even if he was little, was intimidating.

Well, at least he liked her. Layla smiled at the bronze, and dared to think a welcoming thought to him as he nudged her. Maybe he would remember her sometimes, and give her another nudge. That was the most contact she had ever had with a dragon. She just hoped it wouldn't be the most she ever had. The bronze moved placidly onward and Impressed without trouble, as she had expected the queen she had thought he was would. Well, good luck to him, she hoped his rider treated him well...

Oh.

And there was the last dragon, the streaked sky egg. He did not look like he was very pleased at all. Gulping, Layla kept a close eye on the blue. She hoped he Impressed without hurting anyone anymore, she really did.

Yulu watched as the Bronze moved about the girls and honored them with different motions, Layla even getting a soft touch from his massive nose, and she was about to make a remark when Impression occurred just as quickly as her own had. It seemed like all of these dragonets had been so calm, save for that runt of a Bronze, and it was certainly something that the Weyr needed - even if their Gold had turned out to be a Fool's Gold. Hopefully they could get off the sands soon then with all eggs hatched, a little blue spilling out onto the sands, as Yulu was ready to get out of her dress and into something way more comfortable.

I'm getting tired too and the Sand is hot on my feet. It hurts to walk, so carry me out when it's time to go

"I'm pretty sure that I told you before that you're more than capable of doing it all on your own, and I'm not your Mother. I'm your lifemate, which is different, but I'm not going to bend over for all your whims."

. . . . .

There was a little huff from the hatchling as she found her second attempt had failed her, though soon her head swung out towards the Blue that was making a scene, prompting Yulu to do so as well. This one seemed to hate the boys, or at least one close enough to him. Interesting.

Not a gold. Not a gold at all! Allia had moved out from hiding when the supposed gold egg had started to hatch, relatively certain that any potential danger was over - after all, it wasn't like a queen would maul anyone, right? That question, however, was never answered, as a bronze emerged instead. She kept a careful eye on the large dragonet as he made his way through the group of girls, and was relieved when he moved on...the little bronze had been vicious, after all, and she didn't trust this one either.

...and then a blue emerged, slinking around, then snapping, hissing. She cringed when he took a bite out of some unlucky boy's ankles. Still, at least he was over by the boys and not here!

Shamth had been awoken by L'pin's loud laughter, the kind that shook both his body and his mind, and the Blue blinked his eyes for a moment to let his thoughts settle before he could finally understand what all His was going on about. It turns out that the lovely Gold everyone had wanted and prayed for was nothing more than a Bronze, an overly friendly one at that.

It amused the massive Blue to think of how many people were sadly in tears on the sands now, many of those girls without a hope or chance until the next time a dragon rose. All their dreams were dashed before they could happen, and that rather tickled his sense of humor just as much as it tickled L'pin's own.

Well now, we have another blue as well. Mine do you see him?

I do indeed, but you're still certainly better Shamth. Look how tiny he is, and scrawny. This hatching has had few good beasts, unlike the one you came from.

The Blue rumbled, pleased, and went back to now watching the hatching. It was very near the end, the least he could do was spare some attention.

The blue snapped his teeth, eyes now a vivid yellow as he backed away from the group. Though they maintained their distances, the male candidates appeared to have formed a loose semi-circle around him, perhaps hoping to keep his interest. This only seemed to make the hatchling more and more frightened until he gave a loud creel and dropped his head. Like a bull ready to charge he pawed the ground and then ran full out towards the candidates. They scattered, but not before the blue managed to take out the closest two, leaving large bloody wounds on the first and what would probably be some nasty bite marks on the second.

He didn't stop at that, however, continuing past the candidates and straight towards the Stands. It seemed the front row remembered Pipith, as they scrambled back instantly the moment the blue darted up into their midst. Unlike the bronze, however, he didn't simply grab someone and toss them over. He seemed to be looking for something, eyes darting left and right as the crowd moved to get away. Without warning he lunged at a woman, who screamed as he jumped on top of her and snapped at her chest.

"Help! Somebody help!"

Several of the Healers were already moving towards the Stands, though their pace was a little hesitant as though they were scared to frighten the dragonet further.

When the blue hatched and then, began his rampage after the bronze had Impressed, Kaatan watched for a moment in horro,r before trying to make his way down the crowded stands. With the rush of bodies upward, his descent was difficult, and he was not making quick progress as she called out for help. His reaction was far, far worse than the bronze before. He continued to make his progress, making his way to the woman as quickly as possible, but hoping that someone would be able to get there first. I won't know what I'll even be able to do, but that woman can't get mauled! Not today!

Yulu found herself starting to move the moment she heard someone call for help, her body moving before her brain could register what all was going on. Even though she had a dragon now, that whatever happened from here out was not longer her concern, she couldn't allow anyone to get hurt through her inaction. She had made a promise when she stepped out onto the sands only a short while ago and she intended to keep it.

No, stay here. You cannot leave me.

Erath's commanding voice suddenly cut into her thoughts as she had moved away from the table without much regard, and the young woman turned her head back and glared at the beast who stood sitting and watching her. The command came again, along with something about hunger and duty, and as much as it hurt Yulu's heart to ignore her - she turned back away from Erath and started once again towards the woman. She noticed the other healers were moving too, but she was a bit closer than they were. She wasn't going to be stopped unless there was force involved. . . and she suddenly got the stopping bit she needed.

Erath had come up rather quickly behind Yulu and knocked her leg out from underneath, not really sending her down but at least stopping her stride by disrupting her balance. The Green showed no signs of aggression, her mood still entirely calm, though her voice was quieter than before.

That's not your place anymore, you're a Dragonrider and no longer a Healer. Let those who wear those colors do their job, as you should be doing yours.

Yulu wobbled on her legs as she looked down at the Green, though her next words weren't quite what she'd wanted.

"I'm still going, but you'll just have to come along if you're unhappy. We have to do something as Riders as well, because the Weyr is our home."

Cass watched, aghast, as the little blue charged the boys, running over two of them and damaging still others in the crowd before he leapt onto a woman who proceeded to scream for help. Horrified at the scene that was unfolding before her eyes, Cass was on her feet before she realized what she was even doing. What could she do, she couldn't do a sharding thing! What good was a tiny little girl like her against an angry dragon? even if it was only a hatchling.
She took an indecisive step, almost as though compelled to do so by the violence and bloodshed that was unfolding before her, and nearly fell over Vespereth in the process as the little girl planted herself firmly between Cass and the blue in the stands.

'Don't go mine!' she cried out mentally to her rider, eyes whirling yellow and orange with alarm, a hint of red mixed in. All these stupid males and their violence!!! 'The big ones will handle it.' the little green pleaded, looking from her rider and then to Kaveth, waiting for the gold to call out to her wayward son. Surely she would tell him to stop being such a bloody git!!! The little green stamped in annoyance and worry. He'd better not come over here near hers or she'd show him what for!!!

Cass, held firmly in place by her newly hatched lifemate, kneeled down beside Vespereth and wrapped her arms around the green's neck for comfort, though she was unable to look away from the increasingly bloody scene.
'Oh someone, please make it stop! Things were going so well...' she cried out mentally, Vespereth crooning to her as she did so.

Akerth had settled to wait as T'rus watched the hatching. His hunger gone, he was fighting the post hatching exhaustion as best he could. He wasn't just going to sleep when there were things to do. And there were always things to do!

As such, he saw the blue hatch, forgiving at first, his wildness and getting to his feet only when his clutchmate began to head toward the stands. He was not close, and he was not as speedy as some, but he was deliberate, and he had T'rus at his side.

Enough! He sent firmly, broadcasting but intending the message for his clutchmate. He would not have such disorder, not from one in his clutch. And T'rus, knowing though he did that this was unorthodox, was not in disagreement. You will behave and find yours. Now.
