Biohazard EXTREME

Yeah, but I found that as time went by, the side quests got more and more ridiculous. Even with FF9, it's like, if you wanna do all the sidequests, you pretty much HAVE to buy the strategy guide, because some of them are so out of the way, you can't possibly know they're there. Same with FF10, and I'm assuming 12, too.
Maybe they realized they went overboard.

i dont think you have to buy em, sure i own the guides to all ff games. but i rarely use em unless i get stuck.

I'm not talking about getting stuck. I'm talking about completionists. People (like myself, at times) who have certain games where they just have to do every little sidequest, unlock every secret, etc. etc. etc. And in Final Fantasy 9, and 10, and 12 as far as I know, doing all that in one playthrough is damn near impossible without hints. Heck, even FF7 and FF8 have some pretty 'out there' sidequests.

Not for hardcore gamers.
Or, even, take FFX-2, for example. I haven't played it, but I do know that you gotta... I can't remember exactly, either do all the sidequests, or get all the ultimate weapons, or something of the sort, to get the best ending. So you're gonna tell me that most Final Fantasy fans just play the game once and settle for the mediocre ending? Or do most of them dish out $15 on a strategy guide to make sure they get the best ending possible?

Either way, side quests should be challenging to DO, not challenging to FIND. And in Final Fantasy, finding them is the hardest part. They'll be as absurd as, "Walk around until you get a 1 in 100 chance battle with this one enemy." or something of the sort.

on x-2 you just have to get a certain percentage to get the good ending.

sure if you want to do every thing you might need the guide. but its not required tho if you just want to beat the game.

so ive made to ch.11 out of 14 on ffxiii and now i finally have some freedom WOOT!!!!
in ch.9/10 you do get some freedom in you can choose the chars you want to use. now you get almost full freedom where you can choose your chars, you can learn all class's and you can go off doing side missions and mastering class's tho they recommend you wait till later because most of the monsters are really strong. which i am finding to be true.. tho i may just masted the 3 class's each char originally had. and i learned some thing, took me a bit to figure it out. but you don't have to be in that class to get points for that class. originally i thought you had to be in a class to get points for it. but the points you get you can use for any thing. and i also learned that you don't have to be in the party to get the points either. because some times alot during most of the game the party splits up several times. and when the game switches to each party they have the points the other chars earned from fighting.

Yeah, but that's still 80% of sidequests, and how many of them are ridiculously out of the way.
And it's an RPG we're talking about. Generally speaking, most RPG fans like to do every side quest, especially if it lands them a better ending. And when it's completely out of the way, and you aren't given any hints on how to obtain it, then it's pretty much near impossible, especially since a lot of them are unavailable until you return to certain areas later on in the game.

Even something like obtaining Yuffie in FF7. I mean, it relies on the fact that you're gonna be roaming around in those forests looking for her, but how would you even know to do that? It would be helpful if there was a character in the game, just some random home dweller who says something like, "I was just roaming around the forest south of Junon and this crazy Ninja girl attacked me. Better be careful." Or something of the sort. And Yuffie is a mild case, there are far more out of the way quests in other FF games.

Well, that's $15 - $20 out of your pocket for each one of them.
That's how they screw you. Of course, nowadays, there's no point, really, even if you're stuck, usually someone will post a Walkthrough on GameFaqs a couple of weeks after a game's release. And the more popular the game, the faster, so FF13 Walkthroughs will be all over GameFaqs in no time.
