~*KIRI of the SAND*~

After gathering her knuai, Kiri started walking back towards the canyon entrance. After walking a few feet, she stopped and looked up at the canyon walls. Well...I could work on my chakra control and speed. Concentrating her chakra to her feet, she walked up the canyon walls before sprinting towards the entrance, still clinging to the wall. At least she could count this as successful training. As Kiri ran, she noticed a boy towards the entrance and came to a sliding stop. Huh, I wonder what Akira is up to

Akira was doing one-handed pushups, switching hands in-between every group of 20. He didn't want to dehydrate himself again, so he kept it down to 500. After he had worked up a good enough sweat, he stood up to get ready to do some running, when his eyes met another ninja, Kiri. He remembered her from the academy, and had seen her around every once in a while.

"Hey, you're Kiri right? I think we met a few times in the academy."

Akira wiped the sweat of of his forehead. He was dripping in it, obviously he took training very seriously. Most of the other Suna genin were only training that hard when they were preparing to go for the chunin exams. Akira obviously wasn't there, this was just normal for him.

"I'm surprised you're not off at the Chunin exams like most of the other genin, I thought I was the only person not there! So, were you getting a little training in too?"

Akira usually didn't let things distract him from his training, but cute girls around his age always seemed to be the exception. He wasn't even aware of it himself, however; it was the only reason Akeru was able to steal a victory over him.

Kiri smiled and jumped off the cliff wall, flipping and landing perfectly on her feet. Hearing his words, she rubbed the back of her head with a sheepish look. Nope, you're not the only loser out here...I didn't quite make the cut for the Chunin exams mostly because I don't have a team and it's a team test... She looked away for a moment, then looked back to Akira. You're Akira right? I'm Kiri.

"Well, just because we didn't go doesn't mean we're losers...I heard the exams were very dangerous and people could even die during them. I'd think of it more as we're developing ourselves to perform better instead of rushing in recklessly and gambling with our lives."

As Akira said that, he thought to Akeru, who did go to the exams. He hoped that she would make it out alright. She was stubborn and headstrong, so it was definitely possible for her to try to much and not know when she was beaten. He definitely wasn't looking forward to her coming back as a chunin and being the one officially in charge of their group, but he was hoping she came back in one piece and not in a box.

"Yeah I'm Akira of the Kazeryu clan. Hmm...If you don't have a team, then I guess you're going to be put on ours. We only have me and Akeru right now, but teams are usually in threes. If you are, just hope Akeru doesn't come back a chunin; she's already pushy enough without having to be our leader..."

Hearing what Akira had to say, Kiri shrugged. A little danger isn't always a bad thing. I mean, this IS what we are training for anyway. If we aren't willing to take risks then we won't go anywhere or do anything to really help the village. Looking to the boy, she smiled. I hope we'll be on the same squad. You know what your doing and won't be a problem. My worst fear was getting stuck with a couple of pushovers, or lazy Genin.

"I know it's inevitable that we'll be sent into danger. I actually look forward to it; I want to use my strength to defend Suna. I just believe that it's important to be adequately prepared for the dangers that we will face, there's no point in losing your life if you fail your mission."

It was easy to see that the Kazeryu way of risking all to defend your home wasn't lost on Akira. He had trained very hard to be able to defend it, and was willing to give his life to protect his home and its people. But he also knew that dying without a reason was nothing but a waste.

"Oh, Akeru and I are definitely far from being lazy or pushovers. Akeru is actually very clever, and a strong genjutsu specialist. And me, well, I don't actually like talking about my own abilities; it makes me sound...arrogant... But I do work hard to hone my skills every day."

When Akeru made it back to Suna, she went immediately back to the training canyons. The look in her eyes was one of pure fury, and she seemed to ignore everyone and everything, including the wound she had recieved during the exams. She needed to get it looked at, but now her mind was on nothing but the fight; the one that she had lost.

She stood in front on a training dummy with a kunai in hand, gripping it so tightly she was cutting off the circulation of blood to her hand. She then charged towards the dummy, throwing her kunai so the sharp edge landed right in its neck. Her attack wasn't done however, as she quickly drew another kunai while continuing her forward dash. She stabbed the knife into the enemy with all of her strength and frustration. It became dislodged, falling to the ground, but that still wasn't enough. Akeru landed on top of it, stabbing down with the kunai over and over. If it was a real person, it would have looked like a brutal murder scene from some horror movie. In every blow, Akeru dumped all of the negative emotions she was feeling. The dissapointment she was feeling in herself had gone far past its boiling point. When there was nothing left of the dummy but strands of hay, she finally stopped, breathing deeply as her eyes looked towards the ground but weren't focused on anything. Her hands reached for her head, grabbing her own hair tightly in frustration.

"How!? HOW COULD I LOSE!?!? I...I'm supposed...supposed to be...

Akeru's hands just seemed to go limp, and her whole body seemed as if it began to deflate a little. She sunk down, hiding her face in her hands. Anyone who got close enough could hear her sobbing, speaking quietly to herself through her tears in a distressed voice.

"I...I'm a failure...Who am I to think that I'm special, that I belong here? I don't even...I don't even deserve to be a ninja..."

Akeru looked down, seeing her tears dripping on the Suna headband around her thigh. She didn't feel like she deserved to wear such a thing anymore. She reached down and untied it, letting it drop to the ground beside her.

Kiri listened to Akira with a smile. Well then, at least she got that wish. Things were started to look up as she thought about how great a squad they were going to make. Now she just wondered who their sensei was going to be. I can understand not wanting to talk about you skills, but my reason is a bit different than yours... Looking up towards the sun, Kiri thought about her past and how horrible it had been

"Well, don't worry about it. If we are going to be on the same squad, then we'll have plenty of time to learn all about eachother...umm...our fighting styles, I mean. And we can probably get the whole team situation settled once Akeru gets back..."

Once Akira said her name, he could hear her frustrated screams coming from elswhere in the canyon as she was visciously attacking a training dummy. He could tell from the sound of her voice that she didn't seem like she normally did, however.

Why is she back so early? Ohh...the exams must not have gone too well for her...

Akira figured she had lost in the exams, and was taking it pretty hard. The fact that she had returned home so quickly and wasn't her usual gloating self showed that something must have happened. Akira didn't think she was a person who took a loss well. It would probably be a bit dangerous for him, but he figured that he should go and see if she was okay.

"Uhh...that person yelling seems to be her. Umm...I'm guessing the exams didn't go too well for Akeru. I'm going to go see if she's alright..."

When he actually saw Akeru, he expected to see her in a rage that he would somehow have to try to calm. However what he saw was disturbing. Akeru had fallen to her knees and was crying. Akira had never even inagined he would see such a thing. The loss must have really hit her hard if she was acting like this. And then he saw her remove her suna headband and knew that he definitely needed to do something. He hurried over to her and knelt down beside her and spoke in a calm, caring voice.

"Akeru, what's the matter? Did something happen at the exams?"

When Akeru heard Akira, she quickly turned her head away from him. She didn't want anyone to see her crying.

"A-Akira...It-it's nothing, j-just don't...don't worry about it."

She had hoped it would be enough to make him go away, but clearly it wasn't, as he stayed there, still waiting for an answer. It just made it even harder to have to admit it to someone.

"I lost, okay! I thought I was the best one there, but obviously I'm just a failure! When it was time to actually fight, I just...just wasn't good enough. So just...just leave me alone, please..."

Akeru knew that she had made fun of Akira a lot and now that she was utterly broken, she figured this was going to be where he rubbed it in her face for revenge. She didn't know if she could take that, she already wanted to quit being a ninja.

Akira thought he would have loved to see Akeru finally humbled, but he seriously missed the loud, bossy, and annoying Akeru. This feeling sorry for herself one just seemed kind of pathetic. The way that the girl had tossed away her suna headband showed what she was thinking. Akira sighed silently; she was his partner, so he had to do something to pull her out of this.

"You have to know that they grade you at the exams by your performance, right? It doesn't matter if you pass or fail, but how you perform. So you can still become a Chunin...but I'm thinking that's not the problem here..."

Akira looked down towards Akeru's headband and picked it up. He seemed to stare at it for a while, not looking back to Akeru for a while.

"But that isn't the problem, is it? You didn't go there to become a Chunin, you went to prove you were the best. And what you found out was that you weren't, right?"

He knew it wasn't the most gentle thing to say, but Akira figured being gentle wouldn't really get through to Akeru. Besides, the only real teacher Akira had in these kind of situations was his father, and he definitely wasn't the sympathetic type. This 'tough love' kind of thing did seem to work pretty well though.

"And now that you did lose, you decide to sit here, sulk, and quit? I though Sukami Akeru was somebody smart and tough, not somebody who gives up just because of a little bit of failure."

Akira then held the headband out to Akeru and offering to help her up.

"You weren't one to let things keep you down before, Akeru. Don't let this keep you down now..."

Akeru slowly turned to look at Akira, her eyes still wet with tears. She didn't seem to have calmed down at all, instead looking as if she was upset with Akira.

"Who the hell do you think you are, Akira?"

Akeru reached for the headband, snatching it from Akira and tossing it even further away. She then looked him directly in the eye, giving him a look that would make him think she was about to punch him in the face or something.

"You keep talking like you know everything about me! You don't know anything! You have a family and people that care about you! But what about me, huh? I don't have any family, not a single friend, and there's not anybody here that would give a damn if I just disappeared! The only thing that made me matter was being the best, but that was just a lie I told myself."

Akeru's head lowered, and the tears began to flow freely from her eyes once again. Now she didn't care if anyone saw her, she just wanted to cry.

"I...I don't even matter! Nobody cares about me...and why should they!? I-I'm a horrible person...and I...I don't deserve to be a ninja!"

"That's not true, Akeru! There are plenty of people who would be your friend if you let them. And yes you do matter, you wouldn't have that Suna headband if you weren't a valuable part of our village."

Akira put his hands on her shoulders and looked her in the eye, letting her know he wasn't just lying to make her feel better. His voice became much gentler than it was before.

"Listen, a single loss doesn't mean anything. You're still the strongest kunoichi that I know. If you aren't the best now, then just keep working and training until you are. And I'm always here to help you too, if you need a training partner...or guinea pig as you like to say. I'm here for you, you know? We're partners...and friends..."

Akeru looked up to Akira, her tears changing from ones of despair to ones of happiness. It might have been just a simple gesture, but it meant a lot to Akeru to hear someone call her a friend and to tell her that she was important. They were things that she hadn't ever heard living on her own. She wrapped her arms around Akira, locking him in a tight hug as she let the tears drain from her eyes for a while. Once she was finished and had finally calmed down, she released him, moving over to where she had thrown her headband. She looked at it for a while, dusting the sand off of it.

"Akira...thank you..."

She placed the headband back around her leg and wiped her eyes, making sure they were dry. She then turned around back to Akira, looking at him with a cheery smile.

"Oh yeah, and I'll kill you if you tell anyone you saw me crying!"

Akeru definitely seemed to be back to her old self, seeing as she was back to threatening people with a smile. She was still slightly embarrased that Akira saw her whole emotional display, but she figured she could live with it.

"Well...I guess I should get back to the exams. I could still become a Chunin...plus there are some other suna ninja there that I need to root for."

Akira couldn't help but chuckle as he heard Akeru threaten him. Now that was the Akeru he knew! And he knew she was probably 100% serious about it despite the smile.

"Don't worry, you're secret's safe with me. And...its surprising to hear that you want to go root for the other, but definitely go for it. I think they'll all appreciate you being there."

Akira would have gone himself, seeing as there wasn't going to be any missions for him to go on until the exams were over. But this also gave him the chance to do much more intense training, though hopefully nowhere as near-fatal as the one his father put him through.

"And Akeru, someone as smart as you probably already knows this, but remember what you learned from your loss and take note of anything else you see. If you want to be the best, you have to constantly look for ways to improve yourself."
