Shanya wanted nothing more than to look away from those ice blue eyes. It was obvious the king wanted an answer, but he probably wouldn't like to hear what was on his mind. If anything was scarier than angering Leila, it was to anger the king.
After a moment of thinking, Shanya decided that whether or not he did choose to tell he would probably get a negative response. "Well, Miss Leila seems to like you, so I'm afraid that if you decide to let someone else guard your room she would get angry," he explained, greatly hoping that Leila wasn't here to listen. "Sh-she just really scares me, and nothing more."

Reiba raised an eyebrow, then pulled away and slapped himself in the forehead. "Same as always... making everybody worry about the strangest and most trivial things." The young king groaned, even though he was smirking. "Leila likes me, I know. But it's okay if somebody else guards. She'll be somewhere close by watching."
"But if she scares you, I will have Raziel guard the door. Or better yet, I could just leave the room unguarded. Which do you prefer?"

"A-actually, I'd be more comfortable with Raziel-san guarding the door," Shanya said hurriedly. As much as he was afraid of Leila guarding, it was probably much worse if nobody was there.
"Why do you care so much for me anyway?" he suddenly asked. "You're a king. You have more important things to do than to take care of someone like me. So what if I was your friend? That doesn't mean anything." Out of all of the slaves and servants in the castle, why did the king have to protect him? "What about Miss Leila? She likes you and you know that, so shouldn't you worry about her instead of a childhood friend?"

"Very well then, I'll see to it that Raziel is at the door instead of Leila." Reiba said quietly, smiling as he ruffled Shanya's hair. He gave a low whistle, which was loud and clearly audible through the echoing hallway. A slight rustling was heard, then the sound of disappearing footsteps. Raziel was climbing the stairs.
Shanya's next question caught Reiba off-guard. "Why do I care about you so much? Well, let's look at it this way. You were like my brother. Leila is like my... friend. Now, if you were going to kill somebody tomorrow, and it had to be between your brother or your friend, who would you kill? A sensible person would pick their friend." Reiba whispered quietly, pulling Shanya close by his side. "Besides... we were a lot more than brothers and childhood friends."

"How so? We were both kids, right?" Shanya asked, still worried. "How were we more than brothers or friends?" The most that children would think of a bond would be something like a friendship or brother's relationship, not more than that, right? At such young ages they probably haven't heard of anything besides that.
Shanya immediately shook the thoughts out of his head. This is irrelevant! What was he doing earlier? Right, he was asking the king why he was so important when there could be many other people that his attention can be focused on. There was obviously a reason why Shanya had to return to the streets, or so it was claimed. He still was skeptical about the story of his missing past that was now taking over his mind.

Reiba put his finger over his lips and smirked. "The walls have ears, and the doors have eyes. Here is not the best place to say my secret to you." He whispered as he began leading the way up to his room. The stairs seemed much longer than usual, winding upward and upward until Reiba was sure that they were already touching Heaven's gates by now. But instead, he got the gates of hell.
Leila was standing in front of his room, arguing with Raziel. Reiba gave a small 'ehm', which made the blonde assassin/slave disappear down the stairs beside him. She didn't even turn to glance at him, but she glared whole-heartedly at Shanya.

Shanya immediately felt ashamed and guilty. It was exactly as he had thought. Leila was very angry at him, no doubt. She probably hated him now that she wasn't allowed to guard the door at least on this night. It's probable that she wanted to be near the king, since she liked him.
He didn't mean for things to end up this way. The king insisted that Shanya tell him what the trouble was. Why couldn't he hide his feelings more effectively? It would have been better this way and he may be able to deal with the fear anyway. After all, he had worse fears even before he was turned into a slave. Just another fear wouldn't do anything to hurt him. Anything would have been better than for Leila to hate him.

Reiba looked back and smiled at Shanya assuringly. "Don't worry, she doesn't hate you. She's angry at me right now." He whispered as he guided the younger boy towards the large room.
After flicking on all of the lights and closing the door, Reiba finally left Shanya's side and moved towards his desk. He immediately took a hold of the painting there and moved it against the wall so that Shanya couldn't see it. No use showing him what he had been trying to protect him against, right?

Shanya felt a little uncomfortable and very unworthy being in the king's room. It was as if he was a sinner in Heaven. Not to mention that the king actually invited him or actually insisted on bringing him here.
"Your Highness, are you really sure I can be here?" he asked, very nervous. "I... feel very bad for staying here when I could be someplace else." He felt just as guilty for unintentionally making the king rescue him from the strange cave and those unknown presences that lived there. The king had told him that they were separated at that very cave, but how?

"It's perfectly fine. I have supreme control, and nobody can question my authority. What I say goes. If anybody gives you trouble, don't hesitate to tell me, okay?" Reiba said, pushing the canvas harder against the wall. "But that excludes Leila. If she gives you trouble, please excuse her and let her go, okay?" Reiba asked, finally deciding that the picture wasn't going to hide itself any better and walked away.
"You must be tired. There's clothes in the bathroom that you can use. Go take a shower." Reiba said, a graceful and brilliant smile curving his mouth.

"But what about your Council?" Shanya asked. "It's obvious that they don't like me, and if they find out that you let me in here..." He trailed off, not knowing what else he should say. The Council definitely will get mad, since they didn't seem to like him, or commoners in general.
It seemed that he had made more dangerous enemies during his time here. Not to mention that this was only his first day here. It seems as if luck or someone up in the sky really hated him.

"Screw the council. The only person who has a problem with you is Kitsuma, and he's only one man. The rest of the council fears me, because they know what I'm capable of. Kitsuma just has higher authority and power." Reiba replied, walking over to the closet and opening it. He grabbed out a plain black t-shirt with baggy, over-sized khakis. "Besides... nobody questions the king when there's a lovely couple in the same room." Rieba cooed quietly, messing with Shanya's head.

The last sentence made Shanya turn red in embarrassment. Lovely couple? What was the king saying? "You shouldn't say such things so casually," he said, not bothering to hide the blush since it would be in vain. "It can be very misleading. Maybe you should say that to a princess instead of me." Despite what he said, however, he was a little glad that the king said this.
Strange as it was, Shanya couldn't help thinking of the king as a friend rather than a master. It was like he wanted to revive some kind of friendship, perhaps that same one from years ago. As much as he hated to admit it, he was starting to believe that the king's story was true.

Reiba laughed lightly as he turned away from the closet to look at Shanya. "Psh, what princess? I haven't seen a descent looking one since Princess Mononoke." The young King smirked, bringing up one of his favorite anime characters. The entire scheme of the movie was strange, but it made complete sense in the whole "heart-breaking story" thing. It was funny in some parts, super and completely gory in others, and just a plain 'ole love story.
"Besides... Girls have never appealed to me." Reiba muttered under his breath as he disappeared into the bathroom, securely locking the door behind him.

Still a little confused and embarrassed, Shanya was left alone in the room. There didn't seem to be much to do except wait for the king to return. Deciding to stare out the window, he watched the stars in the sky and the lights of the town, which seemed a bit content now that the beggar was off the streets.
What the town didn't seem to know was that Shanya's life was actually becoming more tolerable to live. Up until now, he had considered finding some broken glass from wine bottles and end his life with them. For some reason, something in the back of his mind just kept him from doing just that.
