~Ninian~

Ninian watched in silence as Roy stabbed the monster, his voice furious, his rage evident with every strike of his swords. Finally, the bandit was left in immense pain, his insides literally on fire. Roy sheathed his sword, stepping back to watch the man burn to death.

Ninian took one step forward. "You are the reason my kind had to flee our homeland," she said quietly. "Humans like you are the reason we dragons grew to hate your kind." She turned her head in order to see Roy and Sue. "Humans like my son and my friend are why I need not fear humans as a whole. But you," she continued, the malice returning to her voice. "How could you do such despicable things?" Her hands shook.

"Such a shame... that I could not tame you..." Feo said, coughing painfully. "...you would have made a fine addition... to my harem.... ..."

She stiffened, then took another step forward, glaring down at Feo.

"You are not worth killing," she spat, "but there is no point in leaving you alive. Die!"

With a flick of her wrist, Briseschal flew through the air, the flames not damaging it in the least. The shimmering river coiled around his neck. In seconds, the monster's head was rolling to the floor, landing in a jingle of coins and a rustle of cloth. Even if he was already dead, it didn't matter. He was dead, the cruel, twisted being nothing more than a headless mass of burning flesh.

Ninian gasped as Briseschal returned to float around her. The last she could remember, Roy was just about to stab the bandit leader. She quickly averted her eyes--eye--from the horrible sight of the headless, flaming corpse.

And there was her son, standing right there, and behind him, Sue. The tears welled up once more.

"Roy . . . Sue . . . you came for me," she whispered, not entirely masking the disbelief she felt. "You--you came for me! Oh, Roy!"

She rushed to her son, wrapping her arms around him, in part to make sure he was real, and in part because the mother needed to hold her son as a comfort. The dancer was emotionally overwhelmed, still hurt and bleeding, and scared out of her mind. She had hallucinated seeing her husband, been attacked, blacked out, been injured in a place that was still healing, blacked out again, taken captive, nearly raped, almost mistaken her son for her husband, and blacked out a third time. But Roy was here, and so was Sue; neither had left her behind. She did not even want to think about what would have happened if they had arrived even a moment later, or had not even come at all.

She let herself cry for a moment, needing to do so if only so she did not explode from the emotional turmoil of the past few hours. She needed thee safety and comfort she found in her son's arms.

Finally, she pulled away, wiping away her tears with a hand, wincing when she brushed the left side of her face, which was surely a mess by now. "I--I'm sorry," she stammered. "I got your shirt wet." She made a noise somewhere between a laugh and a sob. "Thank you, thank you both for coming to save me." She smiled up at Roy, turning to smile at Sue, too.

"W-we should get out of here." She glanced back at the flames. Remembering why they had entered the desert in the first place, she added, "Amara! We have to save her!" However, as they began to stumbled out of the fortress, Ninian did not know how much help they could possibly be. She wasn't even sure if Roy could use his left arm, and from the way her legs wobbled, she wasn't at all certain she even had the strength to dance.

The bandit fortress was quiet. As far as Ninian could tell, they were the only ones still alive inside it.

"Thank you, thank you both for coming to save me."

When Sue heard those words, she couldn't think of anything else to say but... "You're welcome, Ninian... but you need not thank us. We were merely doing what we believed was right."

And that was the truth, wasn't? Even if Roy had gone a little (or maybe a LOT) overboard with the torching of the bandit leader, it was for a good cause, so it wasn't like the Pheraen Lord was a complete monster. Still, to see such hatred in her friend's eyes... it made the nomad quiver.

She wanted nothing more than to get out of this place, and leave the horrors of the fearsome battle that took place behind. Besides, Ninian was right, they had Amara to still rescue from the clutches of their enemies. This group's work was far from over.

"Let's go, General Roy, Ninian." Sue finally said. "We'll pick up the others on the way out... and maybe take a few of these brigands' supplies while we're at it." The nomad then grinned at the thought of eating food, whether it was made in the desert or not. "I don't remember the last time I had a meal! It will be a brief reprieve for all of us."

Roy heard his mother speak with malice in her voice to the burning bandit before them. Never had he heard such malice in her voice, not even when he was a child. But she had her reasons for those words. After all, she was almost raped. He then heard the bandit speak.

"Such a shame... that I could not tame you...you would have made a fine addition... to my harem.... ..."

Even though Ninian was the one that responded, the young lord believed the statement was directed towards him. After all, the fat man was looking up at him as he spoke. He chuckled.

"Heh...even at Death's door, you still think about your harems." the young lord replied. "I am no one's property. Even if you did kidnap me to force into your harem, you'll find that this beast is one you can't tame. One flame you can't control. I am my own man, and I will never be someone's property."

This was an interesting bandit, if Roy looked at his last words. He thought not of death, but of the 'what if'. Most men used last words that went along the lines of "If this went my way, then blah blah blah." But...at least it wasn't the usual "Bah! Scum...you're all scum." response he and the others usually got back in Elibe when they were fighting bandits.

Ninian had decapitated the bandit, just to make sure he was dead. Roy pulled the Rune sword out of the fat man's leg with a strong tug. He flicked his wrist to the side to wipe the blood off the weapon, the ground splashing red from the move. The dark sword was then sheathed, and he looked over at Ninian and Sue.

He heard Ninian's words, then felt her run into him to wrap her arms around him. He winced, since his mother's body had brushed up against the burns and the useless left arm. Once the pain had subsided, he wrapped his good arm around his mother to hold her close. Yes, this was the real one...and not his imagination. His anger from before had literally dissipated, as if it was never there. Both he and his mother had been through a lot. And by all means, both dragons needed rest. Rest, and maybe therapy.

"Of course we would come for you...I would never leave my mother behind, or remain kidnapped. I've already lost you once, I don't want to lose you again. You're too precious to me." he said softly to the dancer.

The redhead blinked at the dancer's apology concerning getting his shirt wet with her tears. He glanced down. A tear-soaked shirt was the least of his concerns. Blood from the bandits (as well as his own) was splashed all over it, and there were quite a number of burn marks from the Bolganone tome. It was also torn in several places.

"It's all right, mother. It wasn't in the best condition to start with." he replied.

He smiled gently at his mother, before he heard her mention Amara. Right...that was the main reason Ninian had come out here. Well, she certainly wasn't in any condition to go with the others as he watched her stumble, and he didn't have the strength to hold a weapon up. His anger from before had gobbled up the strength he had. The young lord reached out and caught the dancer before she could fall over, then gently pulled her towards him so that she could have someone to support her.

"We're in no condition to go with them, Mother. We'll only be extra baggage. Let's head back to Eyris to rest and recover." he told her.

Darko caught up with Roy, Sue and Ninian, carrying a red book. It was the fire tome that the fat man was carrying. Since none of them could use anima magic, it would be better off in more capable hands. He already had an idea who to give the book to. The young lord then asked the imp to look around the treasure room to see if there was a staff that they could take with them. There was a small chance, but he just wanted to make sure.

It wasn't like they were running. Ninian was having a hard time walking, and the young lord was already beyond his limits. The imp came back after a bit. Nope...no staff.

He nodded at Sue's comment before they made it outside.

((Just so people stop complaining and hopefully we get somewhere with this cause I don't know either. ))

If this was expected then it sure wasn't a pleasant sight to see. The area was now crawling with bloody corpse and a few people who were with them fighting or were already done. Ephraim himself actually, seemed to have finished and just when he thought more was coming, it didn't. That only meant that Roy and Deborah succeeded in killing the leader..or nobody else wanted to die.

It didn't matter, Ephraim was tired, his arm was quite frankly hurting like hell after being severely cut by a warrior. The killer lance was driven into the sand, only the shaft was visible. He let out a heavy sigh, dropping himself down onto the ground. He no longer looked normal, his cloak was tattered, his hair was covered in dirt, hat had grains of sand and dirt rubbed along the outside felt. Not to mention half half of his body was covered in cuts and bruises..mostly dried blood that are either his, or his opponents. None of that mattered now, things were quiet, nobody else came and really..Ephraim was just..tired.

Moments later the group who went into the fort emerged safely, kind of..if you ignore some of the cuts and bruises they got. Ephraim didn't say anything or move for the time being, simply gave a wave of greeting. At least they were safe...

((And crap *poofs* ))

The screams from further within the fort weren't any of their companions--Charice was sure of this. They sounded... awful. Someone was being tortured, alright. Really? she thought to herself, a bit disgusted. We could've just... just...

She wanted to finish that thought with the words "just kill them", but could she have avoided giving in to hatred if she were in Roy's shoes?

There was a thief she had recently cornered, kept away from her by an Iron Lance in her hands. One good thrust would skewer him, and it seemed plain enough that was her aim, with the gold he'd acquired as the prize. But he was a man of Sentria, and he could see that only a woman of Sentria would wear long robes with a face mask like that. He knew that if one really wanted to know what such the woman felt at that moment, he needed only look into her eyes to see they had gone from rather greedy to... disinterested?

"So, uhh..." the thief began.

"...Go, get out of here. Just one thing before we go..."

--------

She flew off toward the spire. If everyone else in the group was going to take their time, that was fine; they'd catch up with her in due time. Maybe she could scout around, figure out weaknesses when they attacked.

She hadn't taken anything before she left. Lugging around loot in the desert? It would just be added weight and burden, totally unnecessary right now.

Hence, before she'd left, she'd asked about the location of the pantry in the fort. A neat bag of assorted exotic foods and expensive spices were stored in a small bag, tucked away in an alcove on the roof.

The thief was long gone, deciding that Feo had, so to speak, "died for his sins".

~Ninian~

If she was truly honest with herself, all Ninian wanted to do was curl up and sleep for a long time. She was hurt with injuries both new and old, physical and emotional scars that needed time to heal. Sue was alright, but Roy . . . could he even use that left arm anymore? The blood from Ninian's head wound had slowly dripped down the side of her face and down into her dress. When she had embraced Roy, some of her blood had gotten on him, mixed with her tears, and some of his blood had stained her dress. None of that really mattered.

Supported by Roy and walking gingerly, Ninian slowly made her way out of the fort. There was no way they would be any help in rescuing Amara now.

Ninian nodded at Ephraim when she saw the knight--prince--man sitting on the ground outside, covered in scrapes and bruises of his own.

She turned to look up at her son--when had he gotten so tall? And why was she only noticing now?--before speaking. "Roy, let's go home. Back to Eyris," she corrected herself. "Sue, Ephraim, you're welcome to come with us, but . . . Amara. . . ." She glanced around, as if to find the tower from this far off. "I don't know how you could get to where she is, or even how to get there from here. If I went, I would only be in the way, and someone would get hurt trying to protect me." It had happened before, after all. "It was silly of me to want to come in the first place."

Tired, exhausted, and completely drained, the dancer waited to see what the others would do.

"None of us can hope to go after her, Ninian... I'm sorry... we must leave the others to Amara, and have faith in them. Deborah and I are the only ones are are able to have at least most of our full strength... " she remembered Charice as well, whom was likely unscatched and Akihi, whom was left behind in the sands and probably terrfied.

Yeah, by that reasoning, three of them were in condition to fight, and it wasn't like the path back to Pantheus was going to be easy. They needed more capable fighters to escort the injured, but it wasn't like warriors rained from the skies. This group would have to again make due with what they had.

"We're going home, all of us are. When we recover, and if they stilll need us.. we will save Alihi's daughter!" Sue declared, urging Andre forward to act as a scout. She had of course taken the food and water supplies, and handed some to Ninian, Roy, and Ephraim. Charice and Deborah looked fine on their own.

Leave the others to find Amara..right..if only Ephraim was willing to go back. But to him, this journey was more then just finding her. For some reason it had turned into something more and the lancer was going to get to the bottom of it. Had fate given him a chance to make things right with Lyon? They were never wrong to begin with but Ephraim couldn't help but feel the guilt in his heart.

He kindly accepted the ration from the young nomad and took a large gulp of water from the pouch. "I'm not going back.." Ephraim muttered. If all the force in the world was going to stop him no matter how s**t faced he looked, he was still going. If he still had energy left in his body then he damn well was going.

That group of bandits probably did a number on him..who could say. Truthfully, Ephraim wasn't tired because he was hurt, he's tired from all those bandits including the heat. Scorching heat! Who knows how long they've been out there. He's probably well fried by now.

But the next question that came to him was....how were they to get back there? Last time they got their was by a sandstorm and a guide but alone he can't even get there. Ephraim teared off a piece of bread and popped it into his mouth, trying to regain his composure. It wasn't like him at all to let his emotions get in the way but since he got here that hasn't exactly been keeping it down. He stuffed the rest of the bread in his mouth and stood up, ignoring the grains of sand he could hear dropping off his cloak. He took one more gulp of water and tied the pouch to his belt. Ephraim walked avoided the corpses on the ground and made his way to retrieve his spear, once back into his hands, it was over his shoulder once more.

Yeah...the left arm was indeed useless. Who knew when it would properly recover. His left hand still hadn't finished healing either, from weeks ago. Perhaps they would never completely heal. It would certainly take a long time for him to adjust without the damaged limb. He would be just like those war veterans with the amputated limbs, except his was still attached.

They had soon made it outside. Ninian was holding onto him as a support and Darko was perched on the rapier hilt. The fire tome had been stashed away in his bag. He glanced at the others who were waiting for them to come out. The job was done. Now they just had to go fight the woman at the tower and save Amara and Blossom. Oh, and the Raven too.

Sue had pulled out some rations, and Roy glanced over at them. He wasn't hungry at the moment, but he was pretty damn thirsty. His good arm was currently being used to support his mother. The injured arm was...well, injured. So he had no hands to eat or drink with.

The imp took Roy's share of the rations from the nomad and stored the food in the bag. He then fluttered up towards the lord's face, holding the canteen, filled with water. The young lord opened his mouth as the cool liquid (water) waterfall'd into his mouth. Refreshing.

After Ninian had gotten some water too, the young lord looked at the others.

"We should probably head back to Pentheus to regroup. We've got Alihi and Abel there waiting for us, remember? That wyvern rider too. We can't save Amara without them." he said.

Well, now they had a reason to go back. The young lord glanced over at his mother.

"I do not want to see you to collapse in this heat. So stay close to me, alright Mother?" he told her softly.

Little did he know that he had almost used the exact same line his father did so many years ago.

~Ninian~

Ninian took a wonderfully cool sip of water, relishing in the feel of it sliding down her throat and satisfying her thirst for the moment. Roy said something about heading back to Pentheus and she simply nodded. She would go wherever her son was going, in part to ensure his safety, and in part because she did not want to be alone just now.

"I do not want to see you to collapse in this heat. So stay close to me, alright Mother?"

What?

"I do not want to see you to collapse in this heat. So stay close to me, alright Mother?"

Ninian was quickly lost in her thoughts, searching for the memory of where she had heard those words. Then it hit her; Roy had said almost the same thing mere hours ago when they had first set out.

"Stay close to me when we reach the desert. The heat can't be good for you."

And then. . . .

"Please, take my arm. I do not want to see you collapse in this heat."

"Oh, I couldn’t . . ."

"Oh, come now."

"Very well . . ."

Once the pain had passed, the dancer looking at the sand and doing her best to hide the flash of emotion on her face that would give away her thoughts, Ninian sighed internally. She had to accept that Roy would forever remind her of his father, of Eliwood. He looked too much like his father not to. But unless she was willing to never see Roy again, she would have to face the memories, to face the pain and heartache that came with them.

She frowned slightly. She was tired of crying, tired of always hurting. She wanted it to stop.

I will not let Eliwood's memory bring me pain any longer, she decided. It is not fair to Roy . . . or to myself. I want to be stronger, and so I will start with Eliwood.

The moment she thought about Eliwood, the heartache returned. She forced the pain away, forced herself to think of the happy times as happy, and not reasons to be sad. She could remember Eliwood; that in itself was a blessing. She remembered the time she had forgotten even who Nils was and shuddered. She was grateful to still remember her time in Elibe, however brief it had been in comparison to the many years she had spent in 'paradise,' that land on the other side of the Dragon's Gate.

And yet the more she thought about Eliwood, the sadder she had become. Once, before she knew for certain that he loved her, she had come to the conclusion that she must forget about him. She would only bring him pain, and the fact that she was a half-dragon . . . But Eliwood had not cared about that. He had loved her anyway. After Bramimond had resurrected her, Eliwood had fought to keep her in Elibe, to keep her by his side, and yet she knew that she must leave. Nils, however, had let her stay, more or less sacrificing himself so that she could stay. And up until that point, Nils had been the one trying to tell her that she must forget about Eliwood, that she must not fall in love with him. She wondered what had happened between the two while she was dead to change things. Perhaps she would ask Nils about that later.

She sighed again, out loud this time, barely noticing their slow progress across the sand. Gently, she turned her head so that she could see Roy's face.

"Roy," she began, speaking quietly so that neither Sue nor Ephraim could hear her. "It does not have to be now, but . . . when things have calmed down, will you--will you tell me about--a-about your father? What he was like a-after I--after I left?"

She hated to pry, but it was a step. If she could learn to talk about him, if she could teach herself to look back fondly on those memories . . . then maybe someday, she would be okay. Maybe happiness was too much to ask for, but if she could just be okay . . . She had shed so many tears in her life, so many moments of sadness, and so few happy times. She wanted to change that, to learn to be happy here with the life that she had. Chances were she would never see Eliwood again. As much as that hurt . . . she would have to teach herself to smile again.

And maybe, just maybe, little by little, she could be okay again. She would never be able to completely forget Eliwood, and maybe she would never be able to move on, but maybe, just maybe, she could be just okay.

I've been dreaming for so long...
... To find a meaning, to understand...

• ◄AKIHI► •

Indeed, Akihi had been left behind. After his demonstration of Excalibur, he was completely drained. Digging a hole for himself in the sands and just drifting off to a peaceful dreamland sounded so appealing. He would have done so, too, if he didn't remember that there was technically still a battle going on; he wasn't directly involved, though, since he didn't bother to follow the others into the bandit fort. He would have been only a set-back for those who went in side, a stumbling and weak mage who would have been unable to cast a single spell due to magical exhaustion.

Staying behind is the right decision. He told himself, sitting down on the sand, his legs screaming from supporting his tired body while they were tired as well. I... I did all I could for now... it's up to them to save Ninian now...

And, in fact, they did. When Akihi noticed some familiar people emerge from the bandit fort, a slight smile came to his face. He rose to his feet, balancing Elfire and Excalibur in the crook of his elbow. The mage followed the group, not really having anything he wanted to say. From the looks of things, he wasn't the only one who was tired. It would be a long journey back to... Pentheus, was it? He wasn't sure; he wasn't really listening to what the others were saying. They weren't addressing him, so he didn't exactly need to listen. Besides, the mage needed some time to think.

Akihi did not have a clue what he would do from here. Would he allow himself the time to recover, possibly to miss out on saving his niece... or would he press forward, disregarding the possible consequences for pushing himself too hard? The choice was difficult.

The secret of life...
... Why am I here to try again?
PostPosted: Thu Nov 12, 2009 8:12 pm

Roy blinked in surprise at Ninian's reaction. Rather than get a response, she had turned her head to look at the sand, purposefully trying to hide her face. Why...? Was it something in those words that caused this reaction in her? She seemed deep in thought, worrying about something. He didn't need to look at her to notice that she was having an internal struggle.

He looked away. You worked so hard to get her back safely, and look...you just had to say something like that that would have triggered this reaction. Good going, Roy. his inner voice told him.

The odd thing was, she didn't display this reaction earlier when he had spoken similar words. No, it had to be something that was within those words he had just spoken. Someone must have said something very familiar to those words for her to be like this. Someone very important to her.

"Roy, it does not have to be now, but . . . when things have calmed down, will you--will you tell me about--a-about your father? What he was like a-after I--after I left?" he heard her speak.

Huh?

Why was she asked about Father, of all times? And then it hit him. Of course...his father must have said something like what he had just said to his mother in the past. That would explain the reaction. He sighed weakly on the inside. It probably didn't help the dancer at all that he was here. He probably reminded him too much of her husband. And now he was speaking the same words he had said to her so long ago.

...You know, that would probably explain why she had that sad look in her eyes almost every time she looked at him. Was it really that bad, that he had to look and act so much like his father? Was he hurting her just by being around, reviving forgotten, painful memories of the times when she and his father were still together?

He cast these feelings aside before he responded.

"Yeah...I'll tell you about Father...not now though. When we're fully rested and safe...I'll share a story." he said to her softly.

The young lord then noticed Akihi walking with the group. There was the mage he was looking for.

"Akihi, when we get to Pentheus, I have something to give to you. It might help you out if you plan on going with the others to the tower." he told the mage.

Silence. Emptiness. That was all that was left in the bandit fort. The bandit group with the highest growth rate had been demolished; wiped out from the face of the world.

However, through the rubble, there was movement, there was a noise. Life? Could it be that there was somebody still alive, after this massacre?

Sand moved ever so slightly. The body of the massive Goliath moved, turning slightly to the side. However, it was not this monster that was alive. This fellow had died of blood loss a while ago. No, the body kept moving, until finally, a person erupted from underneath and crawled his way out.

Ali slowly got to his feet. He stumbled, as he walked back inside. He looked around and heard no fighting, nor saw any people. Still breathing heavily, he dashed into Feo's open room, to see blood spattered everywhere. Surrounding the most blood, which had dried up quite a bit, was a pile of ash. Not far away from it was the bloodied head of Feo, which must have been chopped off, before the flames got to it. Ali looked in shock for a moment, then slowly walked over... and lightly kicked the head and ashes into the open pit. He was not going to miss that fat, disgusting jar of lard at all.

Ali grabbed a few items and weapons, then walked outside, cautiously. The intruders were nowhere to be seen. So, they came in, killed everybody and rescued their friends, then ran off. Ali growled. This was the best line of work he had, since his last group. Having to prove himself to another group was difficult! You had to hope they didn't try to kill you on the spot! Ali shut his eyes tightly and raised his head to the sky. "CURSE YOU! I'LL HAVE MY REVENGE! YOU BIIIIIIIIITCH!"

After he calmed himself, he went back inside, and went down to the jail cells. That kid who was pretending to be a cow was still there. Ali could use this kid for something, if not just to have help traveling the desert. He opened the cell and dragged the boy out. "Listen, you! Your friends came in and killed everyone. They left none alive! Then they left, leaving you here to die. I'm the only one that's left!!"

Ali grabbed the boy's hands and bound them with some rope, leaving enough length for himself to hold, to make sure the boy followed. "You serve me, now. If you try to flee, I WILL kill you. If you escape into the desert... you will surely die, before reaching anywhere. So, that being said... it looks like we'll be having a nice long trip, trying to find a new bandit group to join."

Ali smiled menacingly. "We better get going... I've got an appointment to make with a nice group south-west of here. Ha.. ha ha! Ha ha ha ha ha!!"
