Now wasn't this interesting! Janga snorted to herself as the bronze continued to reek havoc in the boy crowd. One of the boys was down – no doubt the Healers would be on the Sands soon to come and pick him up – and who knew how many more the bronze would injure before he finally found what he was looking for. He would certainly take out the weak and stupid ones, if that was anything to go by. Save her a lot of trouble. She raised both her eyebrows when the punted egg suddenly decided to join the fray, surprised when the recently hatched brown made straight for his attacker. And they said that the dragons didn't know what was going on while they were in their eggs. This certainly proved any of the disbelievers wrong.

The group of male candidates was pure and utter chaos, what with the screeching dragons and the fighting. They were going to kill each other if somebody didn't sort them out. It was a pity a strong boy hadn't stepped up to take that bronze. Now look what was happening.

"Wherries! Just grab one! Or get out of their way!" She called, cupping her hands around her mouth.

Dashias ignored the girl who tried to grab at him. He nodded an acknowledgement to Bashir and stopped when the brown from the sunset egg finally hatched and launched himself at his bigger bronze clutchmate. If the two dragonets focused on each other and not finding theirs, then they would both go between.

Not good.

He stayed still, wondering if Dorath would bring her children under control. It was not his place as a mere human to stop sharp teeth and talons from attacking each other. Really, the girl was overreacting in his mind. Dashias moved further away and behind the trio. Should he call out, like a parent reprimending his child or should he sit and wait?

"Hey there! Stop it!" It slipped off his tongue and out before he could stiop himself. So this would be his fate, eh? Harper instincts took over. He took a firm stance, feet planted on either side and let his voice broadcast. At least, if he got injured it would give the two bronzes and the brown a chance to draw their attention somewhere else and Impress. "What do you think you are doing? Fighting like that? Don't you know you need to go find yours out there... How would he feel if you got injured and couldn't go to him."

His legs shook with fright and with the blind courage of stupidity. Dashias remembered what the Candidate Master had told them about standing still, not doing anything to upset the Hatchlings. But honestly, how could anyone just stand there and let this happen?

Rieta had been enjoying the excitement of the hatching, almost entirely forgetting her own role in it, until the hatching of the second, wild bronze. So fierce a creature! And sometimes, she supposed, hatchlings were fierce. But when his brother hatched, and the two began to fight, Rieta's hands flew up to cover her mouth in horror.

She took a step forward out of line, then another, then stepped back again, when the first bronze showed his head.

What were they thinking? Any of them? Was the hatching going to dissolve into no more than a brawl?

She looked to the grown dragons, almost fiercely. Shouldn't they be doing something? Weren't they supposed to? Her arms crossed in front of her, shifting in irritation and chewing her lower lip, Rieta watched. At least some of the boys near them seemed to be getting involved? But how could they stop it? The dragons were so powerful, especially so young.

In response to Bashir, Jaylin gave a sharp sigh and slowly nodded, agreeing with the calmer boy's view. In hindsight, his words did seem pretty stupid... But, a glance to Panata made him unconsciously rub his own side. That could have been him.

But ah! The Sunset egg had hatched, and a brown... Jaylin stared, then yelped and covered his ears as the two dragons met. "This is so stupid!" He exclaimed, skittering back and away from the dragons. Sure, many boys dreamed of being close to dragons. But to Jaylin, having two incredibly irate dragons this close was more than enough!

Eyes flashing to the shouting girl nearby, Avery couldn't help but smirk. There was a voice of reason. The boys were simply crowding around the fighting pair and shouting at them, as if that would do anything. Adding her own addition to the girl's statement, she encouraged someone to step forward.

"If you think you can handle that bronze, step forward and present yourself! If not, get to the edge of the sharding sands!"

It was really too bad they were supposed to be segregated by sex. It seemed there were quite a few girls willing to stare down an angry dragonet. Some excuse for bronze candidates they had over there!

It was about then that at least one boy made an attempt.

----

Jarvi, himself was very self-aware and knew that neither of those dragons were for him, choosing to instead make his way to the back of the boy's crowd and out of the line of fire.

As the brown dragonet tackled the bronze, Sellae ran for the wounded Candidate. "How is he?" she asked anxiously, eying the wounds on his side. His lips were pale. She felt her own face pale as well.

She wished there was something she could do to stop this madness. The feeling of impotence and futility was too much for her to bear. She wanted to scream at the two children; she wanted to snatch them like she would any other children and put them in a corner like two misbehaving toddlers; she wanted to shriek and rail and cry from the fear that someone else would be wounded, or that these two precious dragonets would kill each other.

She stepped up next to the boy who spoke to the dragonets, Da...something, giving him a weak smile. "Two dragons, two targets- better chances for you." And then she gave a bellow like she would give to her younger sibs when they were misbehaving. "HEY! BREAK IT UP!"

"You're right," Bashir agreed with Jaylin. "It is stupid. I've never seen dragonets do this."

And then his attention was momentarily diverted. In his mind, Bashir called Dashias all sorts of nasty names, but what he actually did was sigh. The dragonets' attention wasn't on him, and as long as he skirted their brawl, he'd probably be all right. Dashias, however, had never been at a hatching, and had probably never seen any of the pandemonium that could break forth. He looked very much like he was tempted to do something stupid, and Bashir would be disappointed if that happened. He liked Dashias.

"Everyone, shut up!" Doremy snapped, barking at the idiot group of Candidates who were - what were they doing? Attempting to lecture the newly-hatched dragonets like naughty children? What was THAT supposed to accomplish? There was only one Candidate who seemed to have the right idea, and Doremy took Avery's advice, backing up further. He'd felt what those claws could do without a hint of malice behind them, he didn't feel like sampling a proper mauling.

The level of noise and chaos on the stands was quite high enough without every Candidate with a streak of bravado trying to throw in their two cents, for Faranth's sake.

"You fardling dimglow!" Ayishia snarled at Dashias, throwing up her hands momentarily before returning to her ministrations of wound tending. "Be dragon fodder then. You'll be good enough for tunnelsnake bait when all that's left of you is bite-sized morsels!" All those berating the hatchlings were fools. Playing mommy to them was only going to make things worse.

She swore again, under her breath this time, but calmed at Sellae's appearance. "He'll be ok. Looks like the blood is clotting. I suspect that the healers can fix him up good once this is over. At least the sands are warm..." Ayi pressed on the wounds again with the sleeve of her robe, shaking her head disapprovingly.

To those assembled, she called "Give me a hand here, if you could. My hands aren't quite big enough to get to all of it." Anyone with half a brain would do at this point, since all the no-brainers were busy playing dragon tamer.

By the first egg...

Mishaal had had enough. He made a move towards the bronze and the brown. Yes, he knew he was a dimglow for doing it. Call it bravado, but he didn't like the chaos and the shouting, and he had this stupid urge to fix things all the time. And since everyone had tried throwing in their two cents on how to deal with this, he had no idea what he should do. In all teh hatchings he'd seen and been to this hadn't happened. But if the Telgar three could impress, so could these two males.

He didn’t shout. He’d move too fast. He didn’t get too close. Just moved nearer towards them, hands raised and eyes watchful, and tried to think soothing thoughts at them. Dragons could hear all humans, so why not? Soothing thoughts, thoughts about finding Their people...and thoughts about how even if they could kill him with those claws of theirs, their behaviour was NOT acceptable. It was sharding disappointing. He tried to summon all his strength of self and impress on them just how BAD this was.

Sellae glanced back as someone else stepped up next to Da...whoever... and then stepped back to Panata and Ayisha. "Here." She tore at the hem of her robe, careless. If she was going to Impress, it wouldn't be over the body of a fellow Candidate, shard it! And she didn't think the state of her robe would make a difference. "We can use this to tie you, maybe?" she spoke to Panata, but the mock bandage was held towards Aiyisha. "I don't really know what to do myself, though."

It was almost enough to make her remember that they were all adolescents here.

The sands swarmed with chaos, Candidates shouting orders at each other as well as those who tried to put a stop to the heated battle of the bronze and the brown. Amoreth turned and quietly assured those few who remained as they were supposed to that, so long as they remained where they were, the chance of them getting injured was slim to none.

She turned around to cast her focus outward again, trying to make sense of all of the ruckus. Ah, there now, one of the male Candidates stepped forward and didn't issue a single verbal silencing at the Dragons. No, he rather looked as if he were trying to lift them with his mind.. but that wouldn't be the case. Dragons, with their attachment to feelings and emotions, could sense distress in Theirs no matter where They happened to be at the time. Perhaps they could sense calming thoughts and assurances as well?

As she straightened her shoulders, pacing back and forth slightly in front of the remaining throng of females, Amoreth thought with all her might to try to strengthen Mishaal, to try to help him fend off the angry feelings of the Dragons.

Astonished into silence at the most recent hatching's behavior Trista glanced at the second malled boy of the evening. She had heard sometimes there were accidents during hatchings, but she had never thought there would be out and out fights. Dragons hated fighting each other didn't they? Oh she hoped this wouldn't turn out for the worst.

Glancing around at the boys she wondered who the two dragons would look to. Hopefully they would notice theirs soon and stop this senseless fight.

The battling dragons seemed more in a rush to Impress than the heroic bronze shielding the gold from harm. Their struggle continued, and if anything, got more violent. Splotches of greens dragons blood joined the red from the humans who had been injured in the sands, and neither showed signs of stopping.

The fight moved toward Dashias, and the raging bronze was knocked into him by his opponent. With a screech (yes, another!), he dug his claws into the boy and then pushed himself away, charging for the brown again. He hit him head on, sending him flying back. Back toward the clutch.

The Tye Dye Egg shook once, twice, then a green appeared with a loud cry. Her sound was not of fear or anger, but perhaps it was of warning. She looked around, then joined the more mild mannered of the bronzes in front of her queen.

The rivals neared the clutch, only to find themselves temporarily distracted from one another. The other bronze and the green screamed at them, shouting to go find theirs, or at least move away from the gold egg.

Off into the distance, a roar, that of an adult, rang out and each hatchling froze. It was scary. But whose was it?

Dashais turned and snarled at the girl who had tried to grab him earlier. "Would you rather they go between? If anyone of us has to be dragon fodder to stop them from fighting, then so be it. Don't call be a sharding fool because I know the longer you let a fight go on the higher the risk on injury!"

Two people in Healer green had slide past the dragons and were making there way over to the injured boy. See, there was a reason why the Healers got to be up close to the action. Dashias felt like he was quarrelling with his sister.

((edited))

The bronze knocked into Dashias, knocking him down. Claws dug into his skin and tugged as he pushed away. The Harper boy had reached out and sent calming thoughts to the angry bronze even as he flew back towards his brother, ready to do battle.

Dashias fell to one knee and patted himself down. He was bleeding, heavily from a large gash on his left arm. Thank the First Egg his left as he was right handed and blood dripped from scratches and tears on his legs.

Even if he never Impressed it would make for an interesting story telling his children some day... If he lived to have them. SUDDENLY! A roar of immense quality that outdid any harper bellow he had ever heard deafened the crowd and all Hatchlings stopped like they had been frozen in a cold snow.

Now what? He was breathing slowly, trying to ignore the blood loss. Please, please don't let them go between after this! Or it would all have been a wasted effort.
