"I know I wis stupid on it," Rory murmured. "I donnae really know tha' many girls outside o' me sisters, and didikai tend t' be a pretty honest." He looked up at the woman. "I donnae know how smart Lee is bein' about all this. She's thinkin' wi' her heart. Maybe it ain't such a bad thing. I feel like shite fae lettin' Lydia hae at me like tha'. It's always gonna be between us now."

"Thanks," the boy answered weakly, watching Ki Du sniff around. "I think th' pup's just about worn himself out fae th' while. I'll gae talk t' Mr. Katan in a moment." He shrugged one shoulder, more to himself than her. It had been already a long and trying day for him and now he had to go talk to the father of his future bride and confide in him as well what had transpired in the guest room earlier.

Rory flinched slightly, then looked up at Lee, giving her an apologetic shy smile. "Hey. Feel better now, yeah? Your mum wis just sayin' I could ride th' horses later. I thought maybe I could show you some basics so you can take care o' th' horse I'm gonna get you." He stood up, ignoring Ki Du, the puppy now sprawled out in a patch of sunlight with one foot waving about. "You mind lookin' after th' pup? I need t' gae talk t' your da."

Rory kissed the top of Lee's hair, smoothing it down some. "Shouldnae take long an' then w' can gae see your friends." He smiled warmly at her then gave a slight, polite bow to Mrs. Katan before heading inside.

At the study door, he knocked softly and stood waiting. "Mr. Katan, sir? You got a moment?"

Rory nodded a bit, walking in. "Thanks, sir." He sat down, looking around the study a bit, trying to work up the nerve to talk to the man that would be his father-in-law. "I guess your wife tol' you tha' she let Lydia gae t'day, eh?"

"It's not exactly what you think. I mean, it is, but I wisnae a willin' participant. I weren't e'en a sober one. Lydia offered t' hae some drinks wi' me while w' talked this morn. She prolly had nae idea tha' it's how w' do thin's at Farstep. I didnae realize till later tha' I wis th' only one drinkin'. Bein' as tired as I wis, I got drunk. I ain't too sure how she convinced me tha' she wis Lee, but it prolly didn't take much effort." The boy looked down, embarrassment, shame, and anger clear in his expression. "Lee knows about it an' your wife does, too. She let Lydia gae rather'n get th' law involved since I ain't an adult outside th' clan. I tol' Lee I'd gae, too, but she didnae want me too, so I guess w'll try an' work it out." He raised his head to look the man in the eyes. "I didnae want tha' t' happen this morn. Honest. I'm still not really sure what t' think about it."

"She's sad mostly an' a little angry. She says she still loves me, though, an' wants me around," Rory said softly. "I, um, I really donnae want t' stay in tha' room anymore. I'll sleep on th' floor, but let me stay wi' Lee, please. I think it might help if she knows I'm close by an' i know it'd make me feel better. I ne'er meant fae this all t' happen. Like I tol' your wife, I just donnae really know any girls outside o' me family an' Lee. I didnae know people wis capable o' taken advantage o' others like tha'."

"Er, well, nae, but can you blame us?" Rory asked, giving a slight grin. He frowned immediately afterward, though. "Cor, I canna believe I wis so stupid. I used protection e'erytime wi' Lee, but I donnae remember it wi' Lydia. I donnae remember anythin' wi' her other than her sayin' me an' Lee should see other people an' th' beer." The boy hung his head. "I'm an idiot." He muttered off a few phrases in didikai, clearly berating himself, then looked up at Mr. Katan. "I wis careful wi' Lee 'cause I donnae want babies reet now, but I donnae think Lydia would've been thinkin' th' same way. Chances are, she wis wantin' one before she knew me age." He rubbed at his arms as if trying to wipe away grime. "I think I wanna gae t' a doctor before I do anythin' wi' your daughter again. Who knows how many other Lydia's pulled this on or what she might hae."
