"Someone should warn Amara and Fletcher," Arahad spoke up quietly, looking around at everyone.

"I will," Rhea said with a nod. "But I should not go alone, I think. Will someone come with me?"

She looked to Cindy hopefully.

"I'll come," Cindy replied knowing what Rhea was not asking.

Besides she rarely if ever saw the couple, they never came down, and it was rare for the trip up to see them. If people didn't know they live up there it was easy at times to forget they were even up there at all.

Rhea smiled warmly at Cindy. "Thank you."

Haradhel looked at Rhea seriously. "You just make sure your parents are aware of what's going on," she said firmly. "Make sure they're prepared for anything. We have no idea what's going to happen, and when - or even if."

Rhea nodded. "I won't forget," she said softly.

Haradhel looked over at Elrohir. "Perhaps we should get someone to talk to some of the workers about training in combat as well," she suggested.

Elrohir nodded thoughtfully. "I know Vanya would go for it," he murmured. "I'll speak to Aragost about it. Most everyone else will be gone."

"Don't forget about the new people," Arahad piped up.

"Of course," Elnara blinked. "Aras said that they had used to be their trainers ... I'm sure they would be able to help out with that."

"Good point," Donovan murmured, "Since they're already use to teaching..."

So it would be something they already knew which would be good, and it would be good for everyone to know a bit of self defense.

"So do you think that will cover everything?" he glanced at Elrohir, since Elrohir and Haradhel would have better idea of who was here, who wasn't and what everyone was capable of.

Elrohir and Haradhel exchanged a glance. "Gwaethir ..." Haradhel murmured.

"Someone's going to have to find him," Elrohir nodded. "He went out hunting this morning. He can be out for days at a time ..."

"He's always watchful for danger, though," Rhea pointed out, "and we need food here ... I'm sure he'll be careful, he won't let anyone take him by surprise. And if he sees anything he'll let us know."

Elrohir nodded slowly. "Then we let him come back on his own, see what happens, I suppose," he murmured.

Kara remembered Gwaethir vaguely he wasn't really around that often, but she knew he had been on Lin's list of favourite people to follow around. All that she remembered was that he knew it seemed by smell that they were very different.

"I'm sure Rhea is right... he pays attention to what his senses are telling him."

And not just his smell she knew, though it was all second hand.

"From simple to complicated..." Donovan murmured, "Ah well, it happens."

He should stay longer after they come back he thought to himself, to just see if there is any news and to hear what was found out if Ahren's group didn't take too long to get back. He was curious, being away a lot left him out of the loop often.

"Better complicated than compromised," Ahren shrugged. "Now if only we knew where we needed to look."

The Four Lands were vast, one could travel for years and not see it all ... though he supposed the first place they should check was the Northland.
PostPosted: Fri Oct 23, 2009 5:33 pm

"Northland?" Donovan hazard a guess.

He didn't know the Fourlands that well and it was the only place outside of the Southland and Borderlands he had been when he wasn't on a hunt.

"It's the only place where they can sell children none of the humans will take them only the dwarfs will."

Which was an odd irony, it was smart because then they didn't have to worry about elves hunting them down if they kept the children. Smart enough not to keep the children they kidnapped but not smart enough to just stop all together.

"So... I guess if there's anyway to see if it's gotten smaller or larger is there."

Ahren dropped his fork and stared at Donovan open-mouthed. "What did you say?" he asked, his eyes wide.

Rhea blinked at Ahren, and then her eyes widened with understanding. "The diversion ..."

Ahren clenched his jaw. "We have to check the Northland first to make sure," he said quietly, "but then my guess is that the Southland is the next place to check."

Donovan was surprised, he would have thought the Northland would be the first place to check, but this was back when Yue gave the captain a good scare for not doing a good checking.

"The Southland?" he questioned, "You mean the Human Southland?"

Since it was the only other place he could think of, never been there of course so he couldn't imagine what the place was like.

Ahren nodded. "You said it yourself. The humans would be too stupid to keep the elven children themselves ... but banking on that, it would be brilliant of them. Not to mention, by now, the dwarfs have got to be running low on gold - you know how much they've been shelling out, you should see the treasury here! But the humans have been the ones receiving the gold that we've been missing, so they're the ones that will have the money to buy the slaves. Not to mention, the humans would have more use for them, and what with the treaty between the humans and the elves ..."

"They would be almost above suspicion," Rhea finished.

Ahren nodded. "It's brilliant."

Donovan blinked, that was actually true even though he hadn't thought of it like that. It had been how many years? Over 70 years at least since Haven and probably closer to a century since his first ever run in with the slavers. The economy among the dwarfs must be bad... gold coming out, but none coming back in.

"And dangerous...." Donovan replied, "Careful now, don't want a war breaking out."

He remembered the only death of a child to his knowledge, and Adoni's words about how close the two races could be at war over this. People had fought wars over less nobler things than children.

Elrohir closed his eyes tiredly. "Can you see the elven people sitting still while the humans steal their children and kill them off when they're no longer useful?"

There was silence in the room for a moment, and Elnara hugged Garrick, who was sitting in her lap, closer. She remembered the last war ... probably better than anyone else there, considering it was far more recent for her than for anyone else. Actually, of all the people in the room, she was the only one who had been a part of it.

"No, no I can't," Donovan admitted, "But I would still like to avoid it for as long as possible. Wars are messy, people's views get strewed and all it's going to do is make relations worse."

Personally he would just like to quietly assassinate all the people involved but he doubted that was possible.

"Besides there's still some misgivings from the last war from the humans not helping when the dwarfs attacked. Those feelings already there can blow up really easily...."

He wasn't concerned about himself actually, and he didn't really care about the humans. The people here though.... Donovan was a cynical person by nature so he could foresee many more wars within a shorter period if the humans and elves went to war. The dwarfs were already under occupation... the humans might find allies in them.

"Trust me, we would all like to avoid war," Elrohir murmured, "but sometimes it is necessary. And is that not what we are doing here? Waging a war on those who are participating in the slave trade?"

"That's different, Elrohir," Rhea said softly. "That's not an entire race against another."

"Bit of a shame Terexin is gone," Elnara spoke up with a faint smile.
