Another page, another protocol. it felt like All the words where starting to jump off the page and smacking her on the face at this point She flipped another page and continued reading. The buzzing and bleeping of the machines where all that could be heard, that and the page flipping. Even though she was alone on the bridge. She enjoyed it.
She crossed her leg and sulked in her chair getting more comfortable. "The following duties are not inclusive of all duties,The communications officer performs other related duties as required or directed". she read aloud. "Oh man.." she said laying the book down on her knee and letting out a grunt. Well she was the one that Accepted being a Communications officer AND chief of maintenance.

Damn, had he really done that? Kirk had lashed out harshly, and was rather surprised at Uhura’s brushing it off. Well, that was for now. He’d have to talk with her again when she was sober.
Jim grinned, shaking his head. “Ah, well that does make sense. I don’t fly the Enterprise but I do command it…Sides,” he wavered the barkeep over and ordered a glass of water, “its getting close to my evaluation time. I gotta look my best.”
He prayed the evaluation happened next week. Kirk didn’t want to be called away just when they were nearing the Vulcan Colony.
“You know something, about taking things seriously….I think you should lay off the drinks before you tumble out of the chair.” He gave a nod to the barkeep when the glass was set in front of him. “Sides, I would know that the hang over juice ain’t tasty…deadly with toothpaste, mind you.”
Oh Jim had learned the hard way. That had been a nasty hang-over with a bad combo of chemicals. He had awoken in the Academy sickbay with Bones hovering over him with worry…and of course scolded him for hours on end at how stupid he had been.

Sure, Jim-boy, just screw it! “Well, I think some past evaluations would disagree with that statement of yours. Some would call me brash and young captain kirk who chases anything in a skirt.” Yeah, he heard those little songs floating around.
“Oh, I just can’t say no to a pretty face like yours…” he seemed to take the bait, until, “But this will be the first.” Damn, he was starting to act like an old fart. Hell, if his mind wasn’t so wrapped around regulations and being the Captain. He would have taken the drink, one gulp.
But, this was the now, and he had to keep himself in check. Jim didn’t want to revert to his old habits despite how they lingered. "Look Uhura, I think you've had enough to drink for the night...lets take you to your room..and I'll get you the hangover drink..." s**t, that meant he'd have to see Bones.

A drunk Uhura was quite amusing, he’d admit that to himself. Jim sighed heavily when she moved from the bar and started to dance. Not to mention sing. He didn’t know the song that sprang from her lips and quite frankly wanted to get her out before she casued.
Now, she was acting like a stubborn child. Fine. She wanted to challenge him? She got it. Kirk approached the lieutenant, “You know, that’s fine with me. I always love making a great exit.” He rolled his eyes. This was going to be painful, he was sure.
In a few swift moves, thanks to living on the farm, he picked Uhura up and carried her like a sack of potatoes. She could kick and scream all she wanted as Jim carried her out of the bar.
“I think this is working out nicely.” He commented on.

"ok, Im done.." she said in a determined tone. The book was boring, she read 5 chapters in and she had a idea about her duties now and her eyes were getting tired. She set the book aside and rubbed her eyes letting out a yawn. Blinking a couple of times she leaned on her control panel and closed her eyes again. The stinging stopped and she let out a smile. She started remembering life on earth. Going to the beach with her friends, shopping, movies, boys. She missed all that. At times she kicked herself for giving all that up for StarFleet, but she knew that she needed a change in her life. Or she would have ended up as a trophy wife to that man her mother wanted her to marry. "ugh.." she said.
She remembered having this argument in the kitchen with her mother after she told her she was joining starfleet. Janices mom wanted her daughter to finish highschool and to marry a rich man thinking it would be best for her. Not go to starfleet. But janice just wanted to live life to the fullest with no strings attached, Before she knew it, Janice got home and was introduced to a man that her mother practically picked out. Thats when janice knew she needed to get out there. She never really did say goodbye to her mother. All she did was leave a letter saying she left to join starfleet and not to worry, because she was going to make them proud parents. After she graduation she got back in contact with her parents and in the end they were both proud of her.
Her eyes shot open again and she snapped out of her day dream. She stretched in her chair and picked up the book again. "Chapter 6: Equipment functions....Oh joy!" boring.

“Logic dictates that I should,” Jim replied back, chuckling about his handy work. If he hadn’t gone with this plan, it would have been more trouble getting Uhura to follow nicely. “Oh, and one more thing, you’re drinking that hangover juice.” He informed the lieutenant.
It was but a few minute trip of carrying Uhura to her quarters. “Okay…down we go.” He set her down nicely on her feet. Kirk didn’t want her to tumble over and bash her head on the floor. “I’d advise you to stay in your quarters but somehow I doubt you would..” Jim eyed the woman in front of him. He thought he’d never see the day.

Janice set her book down and looked at her watch. "s**t!'" 2 hours have passed. She skipped over to the navigation panel to see how much longer they had till they got to vulcan. "Half an hour? jesus! how long have i been reading?" she asked herself while picking up her communicator. "Captain?" sh asked.

“A lot of women would agree with you on that logic.” Jim knew quite a few past flings that had indeed smacked him across the face. Hey, it wasn’t his problem if he couldn’t commit to them or call them. It just wasn’t him, at least that’s what everyone assumed of him.
Kirk nodded to the last bit, as he bid her a farewell. He’d most likely have a nurse return with the drink and let them deal with Uhura if she didn’t consume it. “Talk with you later…” he gave a short wave before leaving the lieutenant to her drunken dreams.
He hadn’t gotten far when his communicator beeped at him. Jim flipped it open, hearing the voice of Janice. His hesitation was evident when he didn’t respond quickly.
“…Kirk here. What’s the problem?” he inquired. Jim hoped there wasn’t one. Damn, it was already a day to put down in the books. Well, he needed to update his Captain’s log later, or else it’d pile up on him. Even without hearing that the status was, Jim was already on his way to the bridge.

"I just checked the the Navigation system, And we should be arriving on Vulcan within half hour".. She paused and hit some buttons. "I spoke to Scotty earlier so he could have the transporter room ready.. So that should be set by now" She shifted her weight to her other foot placing her hand on her hip. "Its your call now.."

Excellent. He’d be able to see Spock and get the low down on how things were going on in the Colony. Also, he’d try and seek out future Spock as well. He wondered how the two of them operated so closely. Jim would be surprised if his Spock never noticed the other one.
Whose to know? Perhaps the old b*****d slithered in without batting an eyelash. Though that didn’t seem very Vulcan-like, and lets face it, the future version was more laid back, comfortable in his skin. Where as Spock of the now, was still trying to control his emotions, to hold back.
“Thank you Ms Rand.. I’ll head to the transporter room now. Kirk out.” He flipped the communicator closed and placed it back on his belt. Stepping into the lift, “Transporter room.” He told the computer as the lift took him down.
Kirk wondered in the back of his mind if Janice was still apart of the landing party. It would almost seem wise for her to stay aboard the Enterprise..except, he wanted her to come.
