Captain Amaranth Beautiful Propaganda I think the half boat, half airship idea is the best. Although since the boat needs to keep clear of the big waves, what happens to the city when one comes by? Put simply, it gets wet. Naturally, the city will attempt to steer away from storms whenever possible (the back of the city forming massive wave-breakers), and keep a watch out for any freak waves. However, undoubtedly a few will appear from no-where and hit the city, in which case it'll get pretty wet. With any luck, damage will be minimal. Oy, my imagination is going again. I can just imagine some sort of shutter system to protect buildings in the lower section in the event of a tidal wave, or some kind of erectable walls.

Retractable walls was my plan; somewhat less 'invasive'. Naturally, all 'coastal' buildings are made to be extra-sturdy.

Here's a question that struck me recently; How big should the Anachronism be?
I've always been musing about it being approx. Manhattan in size (supposedly the same as Stargate's Atlantis); but what do other people think?

That city had restractable walls that could raise and lower to fend off rogue waves and attacks. And a raft city the size of NYC. Why yes sir I'd like that.

When we're all done with this, someone has to put together a comprehensive list of all of The Anachronism's features and components.

Just a suggestion, the exhaust chimneys should likely be at the back of the city, so the clouds aren't obscuring the sun. ^^

@Xtopher: Indeed I shall.
@Kurisu: Depends where the sun is! And where the clouds are... But yes, the chimneys will be near the back of the city. Also, they'll have filters to remove soot, thus preventing lots of black smoke.

I personally would favor a large artificial island. Something like a tower in the sea, reaching down to the bottom and thrusting heavenward. Somehow, I just find that image more compelling than "great hulking raft-boat thing". Something tall and majestic, that's what I would want. A large diamond shape, for example, with enclosed docks on the outer rim, would be very stable. Some form of large paddles or screws could serve for motion.

It doesn't sound like a very nice place to live in; wouldn't a tower be quite cramped? Not very airy, no open spaces?

I'm not entirely sure what to think of this vast tower idea - seems very impressive, but something bugs me about it.

I would imagine it being the fact that a majority of the space would be indoors instead of out.
