Tal, William
Tribal
Sleeping Forest, Bizarre Path

After looking up to see one owl sleeping in a hollowed part of a tree, Tal turned around and smiled at Lot before resuming his walk alongside their new ally.

"Hey, Lot. Good to see you're alright. Basically, William is gonna lead us to a place where we can rest a bit without being attacked by monsters. And hopefully, he'll be able to lead us out of here."

William chuckled at Tal's words.

"Hey, you can just call me Billy, ya know. And yeah, I can do that. I know these woods like the back of my hand."

"Okay, 'Billy'. Can I ask what's up with those weird signs?"

"Oh, the owl signs? Yeah, those are fake. Basically, we took out the original sign and put two signs up to mislead people. The way we're going is actually where there are no owls. Although, as you can see, there ARE owls here still. We're not deep enough into the forest. Once we follow a few of the real signs, we'll be close."

"The real signs?"

"Yeah, like that," William said, pointing ahead. Tal then noticed that they were entering another clearing like the last one, with another fork in the road. Except this time, there was only one sign, which was between the two paths, with two arrows. One arrow, pointing left, read "WHERE THERE ARE OWLS", and the other, pointing right, read "WHERE THERE ARE NO OWLS".

He then proceeded to lead them down the path to the right, where there were no owls. Tal shrugged and continued to follow him.

Nikolas ignored the two, thinking inwardly about his assignment for a moment. But then he stopped suddenly, as he noticed the group he had entitled "Squad A" emerging from a nearby tunnel joining with the main expanse. The group was much smaller than it had been. The head Captain of the group bowed to Nikki shortly, before giving him a report of their activity.

"Lord Nikolas! I apologize, sir, but we lost more than half of our troops in the battle! But I will gladly take the rest of my men and march with you!"

Nikolas nodded to the soldiers.

"You may come with us. But I would prefer it if we all walked silently. Marching in enclosed caverns such as this is simply....foolish."

The man nodded, a smile now on his face. "Thank you, my Lord! Thank you!"

And so they resumed their march to meet their enemies in combat.

Remetheus
Tribal
Sleeping Forest, Bizarre Path

The small mage was a bit relieved that Tal had answered the question for him; it saved him the trouble of taking out his writing materials. Remetheus continued to follow, taking note of the path they took. It was somewhat confusing and he wanted to remember exactly where they went if they needed to go back and William wasn't there to guide them. He wondered what exactly what the meaning of the owls were and why they were so important that people made signs to keep track of where owls could be found.

Tal, William
Tribal
Sleeping Forest, Bizarre Path

Tal continued to trudge along the awkward, sometimes oddly curving, forest path they were on. He frequently looked back to his two Mage companions to check up on them. On the way, they entered many of the same clearings which led to a fork in the path, always with the same two-arrow wooden sign in between the two split paths; and William always led them where there were no owls.

Nikolas suddenly stopped walking, stopping the others by holding his arms out to the sides. He then shushed everyone and sniffed the air - a strange thing for a noble with such a high position to do - and looked to his right, where there was a wooden door set into the stone wall of the wide cavern.

".....Smells like chocobo....."

He kicked the door in, and saw that the small cave separated by the door was being used as a chocobo stable. There were only a handful of the beautiful yellow-feathered creatures in the cave at the moment, which meant many rebels had taken their chocobos out....or they just didn't have that many to begin with.

Nikolas walked at a fast pace to the opposite wall of the room, where there was a large, wide piece of wood standing against the wall. He knocked the board down with his hand, and there, previously hidden by the sheet of wood, was a small hole in the cave wall....but large enough for someone to ride out on a chocobo. It was an opening to outside of the wall...outside the city of Amoria itself. The Corbeau Plains could be seen clearly outside, the early afternoon sun hitting the short green grass and scattered Ash trees all over. It was a beautiful day outside...too bad they were spending it below ground. He spotted faint three-clawed tracks in the dirt outside of the wall.

He quickly motioned to the Captain and his soldiers.

"Captain...Take your men outside of the city through this opening and follow the chocobo tracks until you find the rebel and the chocobo who made them. And when you do, don't kill him. I want him brought to straight to me, without anyone knowing of the situation. Do you understand?"

"Yes, sir. We'll depart immediately." The Captain motioned to his soldiers to follow him, and they all headed outside of the wall the same way Blank had gone.

"Well, that little problem should be taken care of shortly. Let's carry on, shall we?"

Nikki turned and headed back to the expanse, and continued on the way, leading his two comrades to their next battle once again.

Lot
Tribal
Sleeping Forest, Bizarre Path

Lot looked over Remetheus to the front of the party. "Hey Billy, what's wrong with owl?" he asked. Lot was bored and the signs reminded him of the story about giant, man-eating owls that ate children when they refused to read. It was not a very good story, but it did cause Lot to increase his studies. He hoped Tal had a book ready if necessary.

"Wonder who the cowards were that ran for it," said Dansworth as she followed Nikolas. "Think it was that rebel general we fought earlier?"

Dansworth hated the idea of being deprived of a victim to kill in a battle. Even if she was a mercenary, Dansworth still had a large amount of pride in her skills. Thus, prey rarely had time to escape.

"Kupo. Probably," Fals said, keeping up with Dansworth as he strode close to her. If the general had ran away, would his soldiers stay? Probably. The soldiers might now know about their general's retreat. "But I guess we don't have to fight anything stronger than we did earlier? I'm also wondering if there are monsters here, kupo."

Tal, William
Tribal
Sleeping Forest, Bizarre Path ---> Silent Village

Suddenly, there really were no owls. This part of the forest was different. More silent. The air was thinner, and a bit colder. It was all a small change, but a noticeable one nonetheless.

"Oh, nothing's wrong with owls. In fact, I love owls. They're amazing creatures. Very smart. And wise. But the deeper into the forest we go, or rather, the closer to the center of the forest we get, there are fewer and fewer owls, unless you see them flying near the canopy, because they choose not to live too near to the village."

"Is the village nice-lookin'? I mean, for a place in the middle of the woods..."

"Yep. And there she is."

William, being in the front of the party, reached the curving ending of their path first, and pointed to where the others couldn't yet see, a smile on his face. Tal jogged up to stand next to their new friend, and turned to see what he was pointing at. He stared wide-eyed at the lovely vision before him.

The village was in a very wide grove, with quite a few trees standing by some houses. Just past the very thick wall of surrounding trees, a small hill could be seen, from which a small waterfall fell steeply into the small pond beneath. The pond, in turn, bled out into a stream which passed through the forest, and through the entire village. This was only one beautiful sight to behold; another was the houses themselves. One particular house near the village's entrance was actually comprised of trees, wood, ropes, and hammocks. It was more like an outside patio mixed with a treehouse than an actual house.

The other houses were built rather elegantly, with a strange wood with mixed colors of white, black, and silver. The roofs actually shone in the sunlight, which beamed freely here, unlike in the thickness of the forest. They were constructed in a comfy fashion, the walls slanting a bit, and the roofs sitting in an odd sort of lazy, inwardly drooping steeple. There were no real doors; only thick curtains hanging in the open doorways.

The houses were scattered amongst the grove; at least fifteen of them. And farther to the north, was an empty part of the grove...empty save for a few colorful flags. Tal wondered a bit on what those were for, but it was just a small bit of the wonder he felt at what he saw. This village was breathtaking; like an exotic getaway. And William lived here?

The young outlaw turned to his Mage friends. "Hey! Y'all come take a look at this! It's amazing!"

Lot
Tribal
Sleeping Forest, Silent Village

Lot hearing Tal's call, ran past Remetheus to enter the grove. "Wow, it looks just like the elf villages in the stories," He said looking at all the beautiful architecture. "I remember the hidden villages were supposed to be paradises in monster infested forests. Of course in the story of Gendric, the hidden village was really inhabited by monsters who tried to eat him in the middle of the first night, but I doubt that this is on of those hidden villages. I forget the name of that evil village though."

Remetheus
Tribal

Remetheus continued following, glancing at the scenery every now and then. The mage listened to William's explanation about the owls as he did so. Well, that explained that. At the curving ending of their path, Remetheus stood still for a while, letting the others go in front of him. After a few moments, he followed them. The village really was a nice sight.

"Well come on, let's not just stare at it all day. We can hang at my place for a while." William laughed at his three new companions and began to walk further into the village, then called "It's alright, everyone, they're friends!" As soon as he made this announcement, the "silent" village was thrown into a jubilant outburst as people ran out of their houses everywhere you would turn. A group of girls, no more than 9 years old, ran towards William, giggling.

"Billy, Billy! You're back!"

Several of the girls tackled him in a huge group hug, and he, playing along, acted as if they had defeated him and fell to the ground. He then popped back up with a loud "BOO!", and they scattered. One of the girls approached him and held out her hands, in which was a ring with a small white stone.

"Billy, Billy, look what I found! It's that thing you were looking for!"

William smiled as he accepted her gift. "Why thank you, young lady! And aren't you looking just gorgeous today?"

The girl giggled, her smile grown even wider at his compliment. She looked at the three guests which had arrived with William, and, Remetheus being the closest one to her age, waved. She immediately blushed and turned to run to a nearby house.

William chuckled. "Looks like somebody's got a crush on you, kid," he said to Remmy. He then turned to Lot and handed him the white ring. "You're a White Mage, right? Here, this might come in handy for ya."

Tal smiled at the cute little girls' insanely high energy. He couldn't remember anything from when he was that young. It was only eight or nine years ago that Balthasar Ziekden had found him and took him into his family. He lit a cigarette and waited for William, his substitute in the leader role, to carry on.

"Oh wow, is this what I think it is?" said Lot as he took the ring from William. He appraised the ring by holding it up to the light. "It is a white ring! Nice, this will come in handy. Thank you Billy."

Lot put the ring on his right hand. "Ooo, it's shiny. Wonder where it came from or who made it," he said to himself. Lot turned his attentions from the ring to the village. Watching the noisy children of the silent village ran around. "This place is fun."

Remetheus kept silent, raising an eyebrow (or a least attempted to) at the girl who waved at him. She ran away before he could respond, however, so he didn't think about it too much. The village was a strange change from Rosa for the little mage. He sighed inwardly, tracing the necklace his mother gave him, a habit he had when he was bored or when his hands had nothing to do. Since it was hidden by his clothes however, it simply seemed like he was clutching his chest.

Tal, William

William was headed towards the one house in the village that had the appearance of a wild jungle-man's dwelling, and Tal realized the truth of the matter before their brown-haired guide even told them.

"Welcome to my humble abode," William said with a mock-dramatic tone, grinning at his three followers as he waved a hand toward the tree house.

"I saw that comin'," Tal said blandly, exhaling a puffy stream of smoke as he did so. "It's really spiffy and all that, but we....really need to keep moving."

"Whoa, whoa, whoa, hold on, kid. Hold your chocobos. I need you three to sit tight for a while, 'cause I gotta make an announcement to the people in the village. So just have a seat, and I'll be back. With any luck, we'll be out of here within the next two hours."

"TWO HOURS?!" Tal began to complain, but William had already left the three, heading to one of the other houses in the village, and was ignoring all objections.

How much time had passed? It seemed as if they had been trudging along here forever. Where were those damn rats? These were just some of the thoughts going through the mind of the crimson-haired Black Mage. Fortunately, he didn't have to wonder very much longer. Their path took a sharp right turn, and once he made the corner, he noticed a small amount of light playing on the wall farther down their current cave. It appeared to be light from a fire.

"Well, well, it seems we're not too far behind after all," Nikki said, a small hint of a smile just barely making it onto his lips.

Lot followed Tal to William's house. There, he sat down in what passed for a chair.

"Well Tal," lot said in responce to their being stuck there for two hours, "I could always tell you a story. Like the one where gnomes stole my underpants and I had to go and get it back. Oh boy, that was a really strange day. "

While he spoke, Lot admired the ring William gave him. It's shininess entranced him.

Dansworth

Dansworth saw the flickering light from farther ahead and smiled. "Ah, play time again. I'd like to see these rats try running away," she said silently taking out her rapier. The disappointment of the chocobo stables had disappeared at the sight of this new chance for a kill. This was a perfect chance for a massacre. The perfect chance...

Dansworth's sword dropped a little as a new thought occurred to her. "Sir, you don't suppose this is a trap set by the rebels, knowing our pursuit. It's just what cowards do when they are headed into a corner with no way out."

The boy wondered exactly how much imagination did Lot have and how many stories he had heard. It seemed like he never ran out of things to say. Remetheus suspected some of what the white mage was saying was not true but it was hard to tell. The mage looked for somewhere to sit and decided to just plop down on the ground. It seemed like they weren't going anywhere anytime soon.

Fals followed a good distance behind Nikolas and Dansworth. He didn't want to have anything unsuspected pop up in front of him. The moogle didn't stay too far behind though. The small group stopped as they seemed to have found the rebels. Fals stood by, glancing at the surroundings every now and then. He didn't contribute anything, waiting to see what their course of action would be.

The young thief laughed at Lot's story. He didn't know what the hell a gnome was, but he got all sorts of odd mental images just from what the White Mage had said. Was it something you fought or killed? Maybe a small irritating rodent. Or maybe a bug most people couldn't stand, like an oglop. Regardless, he didn't ask the boy to explain, because he figured that would spawn even more random stories without explanations from the hyperactive mage.

Instead, he took another puff from his cigarette and began to share a story of his own. "Did y'all know....that up north, over all those mountains....there's a kingdom called Lydia? It's all ice n' snow...endless fields of white for hundreds o' miles. And then, if you travel a long way northwest...you'll come to a massive tower in the middle o' nowhere. The royal family lives there....But that country's not like Tribal....It's not all corrupt....From what I've heard, the nobles are actually decent to other people.

"But me, I've never been there. The farthest into Lydia I've been is up to the foot of one of the mountains. Never even passed on to the northern side. At least, as far as I remember...."
Here Tal trailed off, not from lack of things to say, but because he suddenly heard a sound which distracted him. It was strange to him, but somehow familiar at the same time. Remetheus and Lot would hear it as well, although he wasn't aware that they would. It seemed as if the sound were screaming into his mind. It was an eerie, low, haunting sound, but it had a touch of something....dark...Sadness? Pain? He couldn't exactly tell. He didn't even know what it was, in the first place. None of the three resting in William's house knew what it was. But they all felt as if they should.

Tal turned to his friends, unaware of the disturbed look planted on his own face; only thinking one question to himself over and over again...

"What was that?"
