Dante Araquenosse

Dante nodded. "That would be the most prudent course of--HEY!"

Once again, Dante's sensitive ears picked up the sound of footsteps softly making their way away from them; his hand shot out, grabbing onto Scyeth's wrist.

"Not this time," he told the boy, eyes narrowed.

If the boy looked close enough, he'd see that the man's brows were furrowed in thought rather than anger. He didn't have time or the energy for anger--and right now, anger would have looked ridiculous anyway, with his cape blocking his breathing orifices as it was.

"Scyeth." Dante's grip tightened ever-so-slightly. "You will be punished for disobeying a direct order from authority--I can't change that. I can, however, see what I can do to lessen your punishment--and make sure you don't get expelled--if you help us round up the other students and get us out. The fire is fading, anyway.

"You can either help us and the other students stay safe...or you can go deeper into the building and risk your studenthood here, at the least--your life at worst."

Dante's grip slackened, and he let his hand fall. These boys were their future--they had to be treated as such if they were to ever amount to anything, if they were to learn what they must do to save the world.

"The choice is yours, Scyeth."

Scyeth did not like being man-handled. Scyeth really did not like being man-handled. He twisted, a glare smoldering as he listened. Yes, well, he knew that was coming eventually and...getting expelled did not sound like that much fun. At all. His dad would skin him alive. (Do you know how painful that would be?) He shifted unhappily, pulling his arm to himself as he continued to stare Dante down. He wasn't afraid, if nothing else.

"But they're down there," he insisted. He swore he heard someone down the hall...or was he just that disoriented?

The youth shivered as the hand suddenly placed itself onto his shoulder, causing him to become tense not at first understanding where it came from. But as his eyes traveled up to Al he calmed considerably and gave a soft smile as he looked up at him. A nod followed. "Yeah, I'm alright. How about you?" he asked, peering at the fellow teenager and inspecting him. Al seemed to be perfectly alright, as much as he could be, but the question was asked more so as a leeway to a friendly conversation rather than actually finding any injury. But of course, if there was something wrong that the teenager couldn't see at least he had asked so that all problems could be fixed.

He took a moment to look about them as well, investigating the area with tired, but worry stricken eyes. Relief did flood him, but it wasn't over just yet. "Yeah. I'm so glad they were able to get it started," 'Lij' answered again, truly appreciative for the cool water flowing down. Sure they would be soggy and slick, but the temperature felt refreshing as though all of the damage of the fire on them was slowly being washed away like a primal baptism.

Dante stared back, part of him approving and part of him annoyed. This boy reminded him of someone--his arrogance, his stubbornness, his utter unwillingness to listen to anyone's viewpoint but his own--

Of course. Don't you realize, Dante? This is the way you are--or, at least, the way you used to be.

His gaze might have softened a little at that.

"Yes, they're in there. But will you take the lead to get them out of here? Will you get them out of here for us? Or will you stay in here, risking your life and the life of those you cherish and love?

"I can't answer that question for you. You came here to learn to save lives, hopefully. Can you stand up to the challenge?"

Micajah in all honesty had no earthly idea where he was or where he was going as he ran around the building, his steps careful and his hands over his mouth as he dashed amongst the smoldering remains of what had been the fire only moments before. The sprinklers seemed to be doing their work against the flames and against Micajah's better directions, as he was now pretty sure he'd passed that same pile of ash at least once or twice before.

This could be worse. It could still be very much on fire in here, instead of only so little.

He was trying to make the best of the fact that his complete and totally inability to find his way in any place he's never been before had snuck back up on him and rendered him useless in a building that was totally dangerous and could collapse at any given time. Well, not really collapse, but Micajah had a flair for the dramatic at the moment, didn't he?

I should have stayed back there with the others and just gone out with them when we all made our grand exit. That would have been the best idea, and yet now here I am running around with a chance of dying from smoke inhalation before I even know where the hell I am.

That thought exasperated the youth and he stopped his rather futile running, mostly hoping that he'd be able to find his way back to the others at least, or even for the better hope of everything he'd hear some voices and could follow them to a way out.

Or he could always smash a window, get out that way, and lie later that the window had been destroyed by the flames. ....That was option number 2.

"Geezus, where the hell am I?!"

Alexander's hand released the fire extinguisher's lever as a blinding light past over him. His pushed his shirt over his eyes and waited for it to recede. The heck was that?! He hoped it wasn't another explosion, but it seemed to unusually bright to be natural.

"Ah--! Oh..." He felt the strange sensation of cold water hit his broiled skin and he pulled down his mask, letting it settle around his neck. Oh finally! This was perfect. Oh, but his poor hat was getting wet. Oh well. He wandered out of the room to find RuiZhi and saw another boy running down the halls with an extinguisher.

Sasha set his down with the little pile they had started and walked much more confidently over to his kinda friend and looked up at another student he'd never seen before. He meant to ask who he was, but it didn't seem important and Alex never liked to speak up. "Do you think... Is it safe to go up yet?" He wasn't sure how fast the sprinklers would take to quell the fires, but it couldn't take that long right?

Without the weight of the fire against him, RuiZhi could better hear what was going on around him. He recognized Dante and Ardanay's voice...a quieter one he couldn't quite catch, and..."Scyeth?" he called down the hall, hopeful. That bonehead boyfriend of his! Running off like some hero! He'd have to give him something as thanks for his actions. The blonde moved when no one else would. He adored the Aussie for that.

He replaced his glasses, looking over to Alex with a smile. "Not yet. There's still some embers...most of us are barefoot." He declined to mention that he could already feel an ungodly amount of blisters on his feet from his own running over wood, glass and flame. RuiZhi would have to find his salve for swelling and burns when he got back to his dorm. He looked between the remainder of the fire and his new friend, extending a hand to put kindly on his shoulder.

"Thanks, Alex. For being so self-sufficient." The young man had barely needed to be told anything, acting on his own...RuiZhi appreciated it more than his tired body could express at that moment.

Scyeth blinked. Dante...wanted him to lead? Him? The blond blinked again and unconsciously tucked a strand of hair behind his pointed ear. He nodded. "Yes...sir," he added, typing his head to one side curiously. Perhaps...perhaps he had misjudged Dante? Yes. This was going to require some further investigation. "Yeah. I'll lead them out," he confirmed, still slightly disoriented. He took a step back and dipped his head to the professor. "I'll see you later, I guess," he said as he turned. He would have to be punished, of course.

The blond headed down the hall. "RuiZhi?" he called. Oh, ow. Yelling hurt his throat. The blond cleared his throat and coughed. He shook his head and headed further down the hall. "RuiZhi, you and whoever is down there, we need to get out now, okay?" He sighed and hoped his boyfriend wouldn't put up too much of a fight.

RuiZhi heard Scyeth, but didn't much take his words to heart. They weren't his words, that much was obvious. "Just a minute more," he replied, brown eyes turning over the dying flames. "Just to make sure. Then we can go." He didn't want to take the chance of a respark, even with the water. Once they moved to the room...then he'd leave, but not until then.

More didn't wait for the fire to disappear completely, leaping over some of the still burning embers while making his way down the hall. He'd worked with Lorioth before, helping with feeding and taking care of the animals, so he was familiar with the room more than the other students were. He slowed his movement in front of his destination, staring in disbelief at what awaited him. Whatever he chased away hadn't been joking about eliminating the threat.

The blonde ran his hands over a fallen beam, completely blocking the doorway. No way in...no way out. He squinted up at the ceiling, able to see straight through to the next floor, before turning his singular eye to the beam again. He knew he could move it, just like he had with the door; it wasn't as solid of steel, having recently been heated, and he just had to move it enough to get in. Drawing from that quiet heat within himself, his hands gripped the beam, pulling it. His muscles barely strained with the effort as the soft metal crashed into the hallway, leaving the broken door frame bare.

Moving inside, he found the woman who had run inside, laying...on top of someone? More kneeled down, checking their pulses, getting a good look at the white-haired woman. She was wrapped soundly, but she seemed a little big, as if she was...pregnant. He stared at Alex for a moment, understanding why the woman had run as quickly as she had. Now he had to ensure the efforts weren't in vain. They had to be moved out as soon as possible.

***

Herei didn't exactly approve of sending the students into the building, but what else was there to do? He went in with a group, to the control room. There were precautions taken for emergencies such as this, but why weren't the sprinklers working...?

After a great struggle, the students finally got the sprinkler systems online. 'And let there be rain, he said', Herei thought with a tired smile. It was a very intense night, if he did say so himself. But look at that, the students had really proven themselves. He'd have to have a talk with the Headmaster over the entire situation, of course, but for now, he could be mildly satisfied with their performance. The fire was going out. So now. "Everyone out of the building." Who knew how stable it was after being ravaged with flames? Safety first. Heh. How ironic.

***

"Is she alive?"

More blinked and turned, surprised to find Doctor Kenth at the doorway, looking worse for the wear. Looking back to the two women, he gave a slight nod. "Yeah, they're both okay, so's the baby--"

Kenth came into the room, seeming not to hear a word the blonde said. He kneeled by the two, his lips pursing tightly as he felt for Alex's pulse. It was there...but faint. She'd inhaled too much smoke, and the water would only condense in her lungs at this rate. "Idiot," he sighed, sounding more relieved than angry. Carefully manuevering her against his chest, he picked the woman up, looking over her burns and blisters. His icy gaze shifted only briefly to More. "Bring the other. Follow me, quickly."

The student did as he was told, lifting the pregnant Lina with ease. He was surprised how unscathed she was, given the fire's intent. She had a little soot in her hair, but the safety blanket had kept her unharmed, and it seemed the other had taken the brunt of the fire's wrath. More shook his head, following Kenth, who had already left the room and was moving swiftly down the hallway.

Moving as quickly as he could without jarring the woman in his arms, Kenth breezed beyond everyone watching without so much as a glance; he was too focused on the soot-covered face of the dark-skinned woman in his care. He had what he came for. She was safe now...he'd see to it. He hadn't failed her this time. She just had to hold on a little longer, and if he knew her half as well as he knew he did, she wasn't going to give up yet. He'd take care of her, this time.

***

With the combined efforts of the students and the teachers, the rest of the fire was contained; the damage to the building was severe, but not as bad as it could have been. As last of the embers were snuffed, the students were dismissed to return to their dorms, the teachers free to do the same. A beautiful sunrise greeted the wet and scorched group, marking the turn of a new day, and a victory for the young Saviors.

Self-sufficient? He would have laughed out loud if he wasn't so shocked. Sasha was glad his face was smudge with smoke or else the deep flush across his face would have made itself known. "Ah, well... to be honest, uhmm this isn't like the first time I've had to put out a fire..." Alex laughed sharply, sounding a bit strange in the spacious hallways. Of course he never had fire extinguishers, they had to use water and snow, but it worked. He had been terrified, but his brother had been there to pull him along.

He had never been called self-sufficient or independent in his life. Now, his brother on the other hand was not afraid to run into the unknown. And he was always scurrying behind to catch up. He was never sufficient when he was with his brother. But maybe that was the problem. He was never without his brother and now when he had no other person to hide behind, Alexander could express himself. It felt nice.

Sasha looked back to see that same scary blond running towards them. Unwrapping the shirt around his neck, he stuffed it in his hat and waited for his friend Zhi to leave with him. What a weird day. Exhaustion finally hit him as his adrenaline waned and his grey brown eyes felt so heavy.

RuiZhi smiled again to Alex, shrugging. "I don't see you brother here, Alex. Just a few of us. And I appreciate it."

He looked down the hall, freezing in place as More took off, shock keeping him stapled in place as Kenth rushed by shortly after. What the heck? He took a few steps towards them, but his feet were still bare and he didn't dare abuse them further. As quickly as they left, they came back into sight, with...

RuiZhi paled at the sight of his sister being run out of the building. And was that...Lina...? The gravity of the situation seemed to hit him in the head like the building had fallen on him, and it was all he could do to lean against the wall and keep himself standing. The Italian had looked worse the first time he had to take care of her, but still...he would never get used to seeing her in a state of near-death, which was something she seemed to wear frequently.

Taking a shuddering breath, he thanked whatever gods were listening that his sister had been so reckless, for Lina's sake. Who knows what would have happened to the pregnant woman, left alone in that room...? If they hadn't acted when they did...he felt goosebumps on his arms, despite the heat that still curled over his body. It had been that close...

Well. The purpose of their voyage was safe now...and he told Scyeth he'd leave quietly. "Hey," he said quietly to the male Alex, "let's get out of here, huh?" RuiZhi pushed himself onto his unsteady legs, moving down the hallway towards where he hoped Scyeth was. He was ready to sleep, now, perhaps for a few days.

He had studies to get back to, after all.

Micajah flattened himself back against a wall as two people came rushing past him, each burdened with a figure in their arms, and he raised an eyebrow as he watched them head towards what was very likely to be the exit. He didn't dare make eye contact with either of these people, whomever they might be, as he very clearly assumed that a response would end up with him on the fire-warmed ground in a puddle of his own blood.

He wasn't looking forward to that.

I suppose now that the main focus of this event, I think it was that woman in the first man's arms, is out of here then I have no further reason to stay in this building as well. I'm hot, tired, and want a bath.

His shoulders burned, the bottoms of his plastic flip-flops were ruined, and he was sure he had enough soot in his lungs from not covering his nose and mouth as he went to create a pot of ash. Well, that may have been an exaggeration, but still. His lungs hurt and he was cranky.

"This is the last time I'm doing something this stupid without putting a shirt on, or at least a mask. I'm not going to make it to fifty at this rate and I'm not even a smoker."

Micajah's words were wasted as he scampered in the same direction as he'd seen the Kenth/More pair go, his steps a little less paced than theirs and his stride noticeably slower. He wasn't in a hurry, but he wasn't going to lag. There were things he needed to notice, things that were important.

"When I get back, I need to call my Father..."

That thought dropped his stomach worse than the fire had.

Somehow, the next few hours after the initial catastrophe passed in a daze for the Head of the Science department. There was so much paperwork to be filled out now. Apocalyptic amounts, and he knew fairly well it would not be a simple piece of cake to get through it all. He would have to compulsively sit in an office surrounded by papers. There was damage control, and a standard check. There was a numerous list of things.

However, at the time he didn't much care. It was over. Nobody had died. That was all that mattered. Sure, he'd probably be coughing up smoke and the likes for a few weeks, but so would everyone else. And sure, his hair had almost been singed off at the ends. But it was okay now. He could rebuild. He had no lives to mourn, no students to lose. Of course, there were punishments to be handled and taken care of ... but he hoped they would not be severe.

His students, his in particular, had done fairly well.. he thought. It was a group of actual Science students that had taken the initiative and so he would speak up on their behalf. No matter. Now... he wanted to go back to rest. He took himself out and away from the building, his back facing the light of dawn.

Nathaniel stood in the hallway a moment longer, looking at what was left of their battle with the elements. Looking at the building he wanted to be apart of but had not truly helped to save. He was both ashamed and proud. Proud that he had run in this time. He had almost done something, but almost was not good enough. At least it wasn't like last time, where he had had no chance. Last time, he'd been held back... he'd watched as the torture had occurred. Been told of the massacre. His parents gone, lost to the wind and blood.

This time, he'd gone forth. He'd been useless. But that would change. It would all change. He scanned the surroundings before smiling at Jaden, nodding. Yes. Yes it was all okay. He resisted an urge to hug the blonde, and instead let go of his hand, to prove he felt better, and went to leave the building. They would all need a good long rest after this, and the Brit was no different. His shin had been abused, his lungs were filled with smoke, and his eyes watered from the smoke as well. However, he was a bit inspired by how Professor Veilwood had endured the smoke inhalation and had had long hair. He had tied it back, sure... but it made him all the more admirable to be a scientist willing to endanger yourself. Especially when that scientist had long hair even though it went against most lab protocol and would be easier if shortened.

Many things had come from this night. Both good and bad. And he'd watched it, endured it, gotten beaten up in it... but now it was done. Now it was through, and all he wanted... was to go to his dorm... and sleep.

Weiyuan Leung

PostPosted: Mon Jun 16, 2008 9:13 pm

Weiyuan slowly got up and moved out of the building, dragging his feet the whole way. He absolutely knew that his lungs were burning, his hand needed to be looked at, he was tired, he was probably going to be attending lessons sick for awhile, and he wanted to cry. Without a word the male went back to his room, only sparing a glance to see the results of all this. No one died at the very least. That was good.

It was time for bed and if anyone stalled him he might just punch them.
