"Breeding program starts in ten minutes!" one of the guards called out.
Simon whipped his head around. "B-breeding program?!" he stuttered in shock.
The guard who'd brought him in chuckled nastily. Simon's eyes narrowed in instant hatred. "Oh yeah, didn't I tell you? We're breeding you freaks. But I guess that doesn't concern you," he leered at Simon. "Seeing as you're still a kid and all."
Simon burned with fury and embarrassment as the guard laughed. He knew that was true, and was in fact hoping to use that to get out of 'breeding', but it was one thing to know and another to have it thrown in your face.
"Okay, back to your cages!" yelled the guard who seemed to be the boss. Simon's guard attempted to grab his shoulder, but Simon, slick with rain, twisted out of his grip. Head held high, he stalked haughtily back to his cage.
It wasn't a total loss, Simon thought as he glanced back at the open space. He was already starting to miss it. I got to meet the new kids. And I got to feel the rain again. He shivered happily. It's so good to have water on my skin that hasn't been processed and filtered and stuffed with a million different chemicals. It's like coming out from a smoke-filled room into fresh mountain air.
"Here ya go, brat," said the guard, snapping Simon out of his reverie. They were standing in front of Simon's cage. Simon walked inside. But just as he crossed the threshold, the guard gave him a push.
Maybe it was the sight of the snake-boy that inspired him, or maybe Simon was just fed up. Whatever the case, he turned with lightning speed and bit the guard's hand with sharp teeth.
"Yeeow!" the man yelled, stumbling backwards. Simon quickly closed the door of the cage. Its automatic lock clanged shut.
"I'm warning you," Simon told the guard, who by this time had realized the bite was nothing worse than a scratch. "The next time you hit me, or push me, or do anything to harm me, I'll fight back."
The guard smirked. "What are you gonna do? Slime me to death?" he jeered.
"Maybe," Simon replied. He jerked a thumb towards the guard's hand. "But are you really that certain I'm not venomous?"
The guard paled. "Medic!" he yelled as he ran down the corridor. Simon smirked after him.
I'm not, but he doesn't know that, Simon thought.
He slid down into the warm, murky water. Its familiarity enclosed him and he sighed. But not all of the guards are so easy to fool, he thought. Riley and Michael want to get out. I've seen it in their eyes.
Simon pulled his knees up to him in the water, gazing at nothing with troubled eyes. But even if we do escape... how can we guarantee that they won't track us? That they won't find us?
How can we be sure that this isn't their plan all along?

"Are you sure?" Nancy tried to yell back to Mina, but the wind caught her words and carried them away. Nancy kicked the bottom of the net in frustration. What good was it to be able to see and hear the others if they couldn't hear her?
She began to run her hands over the net, searching for weaknesses. Even a small hole, even the slightest give, could be exploited and used for her escape. But the material was hard and wouldn't give. Everything looked to be freshly constructed; no crumbling mortar or rusty links here.
"You're wasting your time, girl," Tom spoke up. "That net's made of carbonized steel. Even my knife can't cut through it. If you're looking for a way out, you ought to look elsewhere."
"Tom!" The woman guard elbowed Tom in the side.
A scream cut her off. Nancy turned her attention back to the courtyard below, as she saw a new boy turning into a... lizard? snake? A reptile of some kind. Whatever it was, the transformation was painful.
"Hey!" Nancy yelled down, but no one heard her.
Nancy whirled on the guards, who took a step back. "What the hell is going on?!" she shouted. "Why isn't he in his cage, where he'll be safe?! Why did you just dump him in the dirt like that?!"
The taller and burlier of the two male guards shrugged. "Just followin' orders, I guess," he said. "You're all supposed to be in the courtyard, so he's in the courtyard."
"But he's in pain!" Nancy yelled, her eyes tearing up.
The guards shuffled their feet and avoided each others' eyes. Tom looked straight at her. "What are we supposed to do?" he asked her. "We're up here, he's down there. How are we supposed to help him? And besides..." He dropped his voice. "You, of all people, should know how many don't survive."
Nancy flinched back as though she'd been struck. Images paraded through her mind: the puffin that had transformed too far and died gasping and clawing for breath; the brave little sparrow with the broken wing from his flight; the chickadee who'd lost so many feathers she died of cold...
Nancy turned away so they wouldn't see her tears. "Why are we up here, anyways?" she asked. Rain started to patter down. "There's a net on the courtyard below. Why can't I be with them?"
The woman started to answer when Tom cut her off. "Because high command is paranoid," he said. "The net below is just scrap metal. They want to make sure you stay here."
The taller guard grimaced. "You're being mighty talkative, Tom."
"I'll say whatever I want to, Bill," snapped Tom. "The new program is bull, and we all know it. Why the hell shouldn't I talk to the girl? It'll all be the same in a few days-"
"Would you two shut it?!" snarled Marie, the last of her frayed nerves snapping. "The girl can hear every word you're saying!"
The two male guards subsided, though not without some subtle glares that promised retribution later that night. Nancy remained with her head on the net, watching the scene below. But her attention was solely on what the guards had said.
"Thanks for the info, guys," she whispered under her breath.
The four stayed as they were until time was called and Nancy was taken back to her cage. "You can relax a little," Tom told her as he shut the door. "Your turn's not till tomorrow."
"What? They're gonna make me breed too?" asked Nancy. She put on her best 'cute and innocent' face. "But I'm so young..."
"Yeah, the body of a fifteen-year-old and the mind of a thirty-year-old," Tom muttered as he walked away.
Nancy lay back on her cot to process the information she'd gathered. And I'm not the only bird who's survived anymore, she reminded herself. I'm not. The image of the peacock girl floated up in her mind. It sparkled as it slowly dissolved into blackness.
Nancy clenched her hands. I won't let her die like all the others.

((Oh that. sweatdrop I was kind of thinking that only Nancy's rooftop thing would be carbonized steel, and that since the net below was much weaker, the trick would be to get the birds up there with some kind of wire-cutter and take it down, avoiding the stronger net competely. Or one of the nets could be retractable or something. But if you really want me to change it, I will.))

Riley stretched as she grew tired. She watched as a guard walked in with a scientist. "Stay back beast." He said as he unlocked the cage. The scientist stepped in and the guard closed the cage door.

"You do know, this gives me a chance to kill you." Riley said. The scientist laughed and wrote something down on her clipboard.

"You could but then we'd shock you." The scientist indicated to the electric stick attached to her belt. Riley would have grabbed it but then she noticed that was a cord tied to the stick and the belt. "All I want is some blood." The scientist said. Riley chuckled.

"Funny. Me too." The scientist rolled her eyes and took the blood that she needed. The two of them left and Riley sat back again.

It's amazing how no one has noticed the key in my pocket yet.

Michael still leaning against the bars of his cage had his eyes shut listening to the rain."Don't be so quick to threaten them...Just enjoy the sound of the rain..."He said.

"It's kind of hard not to. Is it my fault that I want to get out of here so bad? I mean we're so close I can taste the freedom." Riley said and then sighed. "But then again you're right. The rain does sound nice." For awhile the two of them just sat back and listened to the rain. The rain began to pour harder and harder. In the back of her mind, Riley wondered if it would even be safe by the time they did get out of there.

((is the electric stick gonna be able to shock her even when its not corded together? Curious.))

"the only problem im gonna have is knowing when to escape..."he said.

(No the cord is just attached to the belt and the stick so that no one can tack it with out actually detaching itself from the belt. It's a precaution thing for the scientists.)

"I think we should do it when the scientist have gone home and the guards are asleep. That's usually in the early hours in the morning. I think we should go with the plan at 3 o'clock. That's our best best. Unless you have a better time." Riley said.

Riley smiled. "Oh yes we do. Every night around the same time, Carol always makes a noise." Carol was the old guard always on patrol at night. To the other guards he was nice but to them he was like the rest. Mean, rude and full of hate for the "beasts." Riley continued. "Every night when he's fully asleep he'll snore and then there's a bang. The bang is his feet hitting the floor. Then when his feet hit the floor, that means that he's in a deeper sleep. That's how we know."

"Ineresting I've been here all this time and I've never hear him". Michael said thinking back trying to remember.

Riley smiled. "That's because you're a heavy sleeper."
