Simplified is what I prefer to WRITE with (so much easier crying ), but I prefer to SEE Traditional. xd

But ever since I got this new computer (XP) I can't write Japanese/Chinese because I don't have the disk.

I haven't started studying Chinese yet, but I love to listen to A Whole New World from Disney's Aladdin in Mandarin. If it's not too much trouble can someone change these kanji lyrics to pinyin for me?

I'd help you out, but I don't recognize most of those characters, and to further complicate things, they're traditional, which are harder for me to read. sweatdrop

If you're feeling up to the task, you could always go to wiktionary and copy and paste each character and write down all the pronunciations (under "Mandarin" for each character).

Technically, Chinese is my native language...but I know almost none, because I was adopted at 7 months...I wish I knew more though. But a random fact about me relating to hearing Chinese when I was young, was that I developed perfect pitch, where I can tell you what a note is, or play one on command, that kinda stuff. It's cool, that's one plus to have heard Chinese when i was young, and being exposed to music early. Also, people say that music is a lot like languages, and languages come pretty easy to me. But enough blabbing, I'll just shut up now...

I couldn't agree more about the music and languages being very similar thing. I'm a multi-instrumentalist myself, and I speak several languages, and for me, learning a new language is just like learning how to play a new instrument. And if you already speak a language similar to the one you're trying to learn (say, for example, you speak Spanish and you want to learn French), it's considerably easier than starting from scratch, which is exactly like learning how to play an instrument that is similar to one that you can already play (ex. it was a easier for me to learn to play the bassoon because I'd just switched from bari sax).

I also happen to have perfect pitch, and it's made recognizing and producing the tones of Chinese that much easier. biggrin

That's good to know....I do want to re-learn Chinese some day.

I'm good at getting pitch and everything as well because I've always loved to listen to music and get every part right.

How do you get the language bar to type in Chinese? I've got it on ther, but I can't figure out how to change it.
PostPosted: Wed Jan 17, 2007 9:15 am

Click the little square that says "EN" (English) and change it to "CH" (Chinese), or if the square isn't there for some reason or if you're just too lazy to move your hand over to the mouse, you can just do CTRL+SHIFT until you're in Chinese mode.

And then once you're in Chinese mode, you can switch back and forth between typing in "English" (i.e. Latin alphabet) and characters by hitting left Shift.

So basically once you have the Chinese bar set to Chinese and you're in Chinese input mode, you can type the pinyin with tones at the end (ex. zhong1wen2) and choose which characters you want from the list if it doesn't correctly guess the ones you wanted.

Ahh, sorry, not trying to be rude, but I hate it when people refer to Chinese characters as "kanji" when they're not using it in a Japanese context. You're literally using the Japanese word for "Chinese character". DD: In Chinese it's "hanzi", thank you very much. biggrin

I thought so, but someone kept trying to convince me otherwise.

Ok, anyone know if tuttle is good for learning hanzi? biggrin

It's been a while since I have last written something in Chinese, but it seems like I still remember how to read a lot of words. I have to add that I learned the simplified Chinese, so I couldn't recognize some of the traditional ones or I have simply forgotten some of the words in the text. If you want the pitches on the pinyin, I can add them.

Some words that are often repeated, but are not necessarily sung:

阿a拉la丁ding -------> Aladdin

公gong主zhu ------> Princess

二er反fan閘chan probably means chorus, but I'm not sure

妳ni -------> feminine form of "you", in simplified chinese there is no difference between the masculine and feminine form

你ni -------> masculine form of "you"

我wo -----> I, me

(一yi個ge)嶄zhan新xin的de世shi界jie/全quan新xin的de世shi界jie -------> (a)whole new world
