Yay, they were going hunting! Based on how the boys fought last night, it should be a cinch to get some nice, juicy, fresh meat. Orika listened intently to the Tategami rules, making sure she memorized every one of those edicts. Wouldn't wanna unintentionally break them and have to face Maya. Immediately, her mind jumped to what the boys might be thinking, especially Shisei. They would want to escape this prison as soon as possible, so what would they think of her rules? Well, can't enforce the rules without a good punishment. If they could just defeat Maya and Baki somehow... They needed to get training right away! She hadn't even finished the thought before Maya finished tying her hands together! "Mmmpph... Gah, these are so tight!" Orika whined as she tried untying her own hands without listening to Maya at first. Her fingers were too numb from the cold to do much untying. She wiggled over to Shisei, using her good leg to propel herself, surely but slowly. He was closer, that was all. "Hold still, okay?" she muttered, rubbing her fingers together for some warmth, then tackling Shisei's knot. It was easy, with Maya's finishing knot being fairly loose.

(There is no way to lie on this is there?)

Karite was first to protest Maya's idea of sharing personal information. He had kept his past hidden and if this was what Maya thought would make them closer he had to disagree. If anyone knew about his past he would surely end up dead, or ridiculed. "Maya, isn't that a little extreme? Some people don't like sharing about themselves. We know nothing of your past or how you got here?" Karite was hoping he wouldn't mess up. Keeping his life story a secret had been working very well. If he only had a weapon on him then this would have been so much easier. Luckily Karite came from a port city and spent a lot of his time around boats. Using his nimble fingers he began to trace the knot hoping to find the beginning strand and reverse whatever Maya had done. This shouldn't take to long after all as long as he kept his cool. If worse came to worse and he had to share rhyming things would make it all the more confusing to decipher. The game was on and only getting better. speaking up again to the other two Karite had at least figured out what kind of knot it was. "Mine isn't to complex of a knot does yours feel the same?"

Shisei’s eyes slightly widened at the form of the woman’s hands. Does she punch concrete every day? Her palms probably were in worse condition than the lion. Being as how the elder shinobi had no use for those techniques, the snake child felt slightly dismayed. He could not learn advanced techniques here. Still the kunoichi of lions did know the academy jutsu that they would need to pass. It was a start. Shisei would have asked her to teach him one of those, but he soon found himself tied back to back with his other two peers. “What is the meaning of this?!” the serpent youth shouted at the woman. As the woman explained the rules of this training, Shisei glared at the woman and said nothing. He allowed Karite to speak his outrage. Not that the serpent maverick had anything to keep secret. The past was the past. He wanted to learn jutsu. Or at least not be so close to the others. This was an invasion of space. There was only one way out of this quickly. Now if only his fingers could reach either of them. The boy struggled a bit trying to get a hold of the rope, but to no avail. The snake child would have to try and figure out which one of their palms are the closest.

"Nope. I guess Maya's not very good with knots and I doubt her lion can do any better," Orika whispered, quiet enough that Maya hopefully couldn't hear. That was one advantage they had, albeit not a real good one since she could still pummel them into dust... and legally. Orika took her hands off Shisei's, shaking them to warm up. "Eh, don't worry, Karite. She said you could tell about your favourite colour or something meaningless. Unless you're so secretive you don't want us to know that either!" the farm girl laughed, now resorting to shaking her hands to get the blood flowing. She had on gloves, but they were all but useless so close to the ground. Orika felt Shisei straining behind her and realized that he had made an attempt to untie her knot... but to no avail. "Come on, cough it up," she smirked, relishing in making the hated boy squirm. The angel inside reasoned that this would be a great chance to hear more about Shisei, but the devil liked to see his pain. While Shisei told his life story, Orika whistled at Karite, "Why don't you come closer so we'll all be warmer? Frozen fingers are hard to tie knots with." Her own fingers, now at least movable, started to get to work on Shisei's knot. She found the spot where the rope dipped under a thick pile of strands and pinched at the key strand, pulling as hard as she could. Her fingers screamed as the rope rubbed against them, but Orika simply gritted her teeth and kept on pulling until it came loose. Good, now all that was left was to unwrap the ropes and get past one more knot.

If Karite listens to Orika, +1 to Karite and Shisei's next roll.

The serpent child heard Orika’s voice and complied with her wishes. Her fingers began to untwine the boy’s bound wrists. There was not much pressure on his hands to begin with, but it was still a relief to be freed from those shackles. As Orika quickly loosened the knot, hopper whispered something about Maya. Shisei had to agree. “Yes. She seems more of the type to smash things rather than have enough finesse to get these tighter.” The boy’s voice whispered back. There was the penalty for his mistake from before. He had to say something about himself. But what? Shisei was scanning his mind for the least amount of information he could say. Then his mind remembered what the Tategami woman had said. “You want to know something about me. Hmm. I find it uncomfortable to have my hands bound. How is that?” the youth said trying to squirm and see whose knot his fingers can get to. Hopefully his attempt this time would be better than the first.

Maya chuckled as she watched them - she had expected Orika to be quick with the knots, since the girl had grown up on the rice farm. But it surprised her how terrible Shisei was with them, since he was the one always acting superior. She caught everything they said - she did, after all, train alone most of the time, and had to be aware of everything around her - but didn't comment on it. She didn't have to...she didn't particularly care about what they said about her, since they'd have to undergo her tutelage anyway. Shrugging, she responded to Karite. "No one has been around me long enough to ask anything of importance. My story is simple enough - I was born, I was sent here, I grew up relying on friends that always disappeared or disappointed me. Friends...well, people I knew. Not really friends." Maya shrugged again and watched them - that was the basis of her story, and she didn't mind sharing - but she didn't care to delve into details anyway. She rolled her shoulders, hearing the satisfying pops in her back, and began to smooth out Baki's mane, unknotting the parts of it that had become tangled while he slept. She would comb it out in the spring, take some of the weight off the lion's neck. For now, it kept him warm.

Karite listened to his surroundings as he feed one of the lose ends through itself. He was working his way backwards when he hit another knot. This one was going to need some work to loosen before he could just simply feed itself backwards. Then Maya spoke about her past. Not much detail was used and didn't do Karite any good. "When I first told you my name you said that you knew someone once with my name. Was he of any importance to you? Was he like me?" Waiting for a response Orika chimed in with a comment of getting warmer. While his knuckle gloves were covering his hands it wasn't working for his fingers, but he had the endurance to continue. "No offense Orika, but I would rather not. Nothing against your or snake eyes. I just don't feel the need yet." Looking up at Maya with his dead eyes one of same mind could see he was alone and scared. While his actions and appearance could never see it the boy hoped she could. He wanted someone to care for him like Maya was right now. He didn't want to be alone anymore. Karite felt the same for Maya. He didn't want her to be alone anymore either. He wanted a family, someone he could lean on and trust.

Karite didn't have to wait long before he felt the ropes loosening enough to feed the last end through. Following the knot he figured where he had to go and from their like mouse looking for cheese in a maze he made it to the finish. Unwrapping his hands the boy stood up shaking his vest to get the snow off. "So Maya, it seems I am the first one done. Before I call it a day I better help them." Walking over two the dynamic duo he knelt and looked at their knot. "Orika take this end and pull it to the left. Shisei you do the same with this end for Orika." Looking at the knot if they pulled these ends they would roll on top of each other and become looser. "Just cause I am finished doesn't mean I cant help you two guys out. I did grow up around ships. Lots a knots to deal with around those scurvy dogs." Without realizing it Karite gave away one of the largest hints to his place of origin. The reaper seemed to be slipping in his new environment.

The serpent youth took note of the quickness Karite was able to get out of his leather binding. As Shisei struggled with the line he gave one of his ears some attention to what the Tategami and Tategami in training was talking about. He only paid half attention because his mind was more focused on destroying his own bind. His ears only picked up when the tanned youth wanted to give his quote on advice. The serpent would have preferred to figure it out on his own, but he’d rather have his hands free and learning jutsu so he took heed of the advice. He pulled the end on Orika’s part and felt it loosen on her side. That was a start. Pale fingers kept fiddling around with the knot as Karite decided to let the rest of the world know more about his life. Around ships. That explained the use of knots. On Shisei’s year of vagrancy he did not pass any ships or worked on any. He had never planned to do any shipping out so had never dealt much with ropes. Little snake could guess that it is a skill that can be useful. His fingers continued to fiddle with knot that bonded him to the hurt rabbit.

The strings that kept the rabbit in place were becoming easier to undo. The reaper’s advice did help with undoing the knots. The snake youth would have to remember to find a book on knots and practice them. If that jungle drunk ever reappeared and wanted to make Shisei some sort of slave, he’d be at the woman’s mercy if she used a rope. Clearing his mind of such an apprehensive event, the snake youth continued to pull apart the strings. Move one piece here, and allow it to go underneath the next. Twist this portion. Another knot is unraveled and Shisei can feel the wrists of broken hopper becoming liberated from the tether. “Just about one more knot…” little snake thought to himself as his fingers continued to pick at the bind.

"Okay!" Orika replied, following Karite's instructions and pulling the end he pointed out to the left, "Although I think the exercise was to untie each other's knots." The girl gave a small laugh. She was a little mad at his arrogant tone that was beginning to sound like Shisei's, but help was help and truth was truth. There, Shisei was free! His hands should be more free to untie her, then. She turned back to Karite and quickly put together everything she knew about him. It wasn't fair. There was nothing spectacular about her past. Did that make her a weaker person than these two boys? Of course not and she'll show them that the strongest shinobi was made through hard work and that alone, not a cheesy tragic past. So let's see... Karite was a thief... and he worked on ships... with scurvy dogs... "You were a pirate?" Orika gasped, wide eyed in astonishment. Cool! Shimagakure seemed to be attracting so many kinds of pirates and ex-pirates. How exciting! "I mean, it makes sense! You look like you've had scurvy yourself and your hair is weird and I know pirates liked to dye their hair to intimidate people."

The snake youth got up from his position, massaging his wrists. They were not so tight, the tether hurt or left any markings on his skin. Still it felt good to be free. He gave a quick scan of his palms as he listened to the remaining person who was tied up make remarks about silver eyes. “Don’t make such assumptions…” the Orochi youth replied to Orika’s question. The snake child turned around gazing at the knot. “Besides what is intimidating green hair? It’s just a color.” he said as his fingers began to toy about with the knot. It seemed this one was a little more difficult than he expected. When he was toying with it before, little snake had actually made the knot tighter. “This won’t set well…”. Pale fingers toyed with the tether trying to release its grasp on hopper, but with time he plucked and picked at the rope the knot grew smaller. He took his hands away gazing at the knot. Damn. Maybe he should have thought this through, before just picking at it.

Maya answered Karite's question before making a comment on their training. "The other Karite ... he made it seem the Kun'Kumo were right sometimes. He never trained with a lion, so I don't really know...but maybe that's why Aunt Shuga never had him train with one. Was he important to me?" Maya pondered the question while she addressed something else. "Orika is the only one who understood the point of the exercise. Karite, you leapt ahead and didn't wait for your peers. Shisei is still tied, though almost done. You may not feel the need for help, Karite, but others may need you. Learn to work with them. You too, Shisei." Maya ruffled her own hair, flipping it backwards and then sighing when it fell in her eyes again. She'd cut it again or let it grow - cutting was the more immediate solution, but it would grow to this same length again. Letting it grow longer would probably be better in the long run. Shrugging, she turned back to Karite, her eyes unreadable. "Was he important? He was the first person to disappear from my new life on Shima. So I guess he wasn't." Maya turned her back on the three, and listened for Shisei to complete his training. It was taking him longer than she had planned for the trio. "Shisei, work a little less hard and a little more smart."

Karite laughed a little when Orika assumed he was a pirate. It would be funny to see himself on the seas all day when he was so accustom to the ground. His acrobatic nature would have got him killed quickly on the high seas. That and thieving from everyone he meet would have got him run through sooner or later. "Sorry Orika, I am not pirate. I have seen my fair share of them but I am not one myself." As Maya spoke about the exercise he shook his head. Figures that would be the goal. He was not use to working with other people. This was going to get harder he could tell. "Sorry Maya, about Karite I mean. I wont be that easy to get rid of. so looks like your stuck with me for a long time to come. As for the exercise, I am not use to working with people. I do things alone must of the time." The young Reaper did not lie. His late night adventures did call for a loner appeal. Having a partner along would only slow one down and make it twice as hard to concentrate on the surroundings. Working alone suited his old line of work, but now it seemed like teamwork was his new best friend. "It may take some time to get use to this."

Maya frowned, and tugged on Baki's ears. "You can't work alone if you want to be Tategami. That's your problem, Karite - you would have a partner you absolutely always have to watch out for, and the same for Kore. Being alone from now on will never happen - not even after Shinichi says you can all go your separate ways. Unless you decide you don't want to be Tategami after all." Maya shrugged and scratched Baki's ears, relaxing and watching, waiting for Shisei. They really did need team training; Karite had already showed that he didn't really know how to do that. She checked on the soaking hides, deciding that they still needed an extra hour. Then she'd keep preparing them, and decide later what to do - though she did want to give one to Mai, who had outfitted her for the winter. She rolled her shoulders again and yawned - thinking of how to train these guys wasn't hard, it would just be hard to get them to do it right.

Baki snorted and growled happily as Maya scratched his ears, eying the three newest residents to the grounds. The boy was back, and Orika, who he'd seen every time they visited the rice farm. She had grown up nicely, he supposed, for a human. The Orochi boy, though, didn't seem to like it here, which confused the lion. The Grounds were the best place on the whole island! Only the forests came in close second - otherwise there were lots of people around and not enough fun things for a full grown lion to do without scaring them.
