"And if I wanted to read them as well?" He came off a bit angry but didn't mean to. Frowning at the tone of his voice, he picked up a pen and began to sign them. Sheet after sheet, the same robotic movement from page to page.

Sighing softly, he got up and looked out the window. He hated the look he had just seen on her face. That look, reminded him of the way Ed had looked when he was upset with him. He missed Ed more than he actually wanted to admit, thus making the look hurt twice as much as it would have, had only Hawkeye been giving it to him. He hated to disappoint her as well.

He felt as if he had let Ed down by not explaining to him what the Philosopher's Stone was made of in the first place. It seemed as if he had lead him on a journey that was all a lie. At the time it had seemed like the right thing to do, but was it actually? This he could not answer. His mind turned to thoughts of wondering whether he would ever see Ed again. If he did see Ed again, how was he to act? Would Ed even be the same anymore? Could he possibly come back from where he was sent? Shaking his head, trying to sort out the thoughts, he looked to Riza, a serious look on his face, however, it also denoted an unspoken apology.

Riza jumped, stung by his tone and startled by his words. Roy Mustang was a man of calm collected thoughts...at least in an office setting. To snap at a disobedient susidiary during a training excercise...or to scold the Elric brothers in a conflict situation...that was one thing... But to raise his voice to his most trusted subordinate in his own office? Why, no one had ever heard of such a thing! A look of empathy and injury slid across her features as she fumbled for words.

"I...I'm sorry, sir," she stammered, so taken aback by his sudden irritation at her initiative that she honestly didn't really have anything better to offer verbally. "I...was merely trying to save you the trouble of reading through sub-par work. I know how much you need to get done, I figured it would be better not to trouble you with the trivialities of enlistee documentation." She swallowed the lump in the back of her throat and silently put back the paper still clamped between her fingers, which were now shaking slightly.

She just couldn't believe she had been reprimanded like that... She watched him sign the papers one by one, his lips pressed silently together in a grim line across his face, his right hand clamped so tightly around the pen it made the muscles in her palms ache in sympathy.

"No need to take my word on the content, sir..." she found herself saying almost inaudibly. "Please, feel free to read through them as you see fit..."

She knew it was a crutch. The paperwork, the harsh words toward his junior officers, the standoffish shift in his personality... They were all merely a crutch... A way of hiding his sadness and his injuries from the people around him. A lion licked his wounds only when he knew no one was watching...

But she knew. Riza always knew... And she was getting tired of it. She couldn't bear to see him this way anymore, it was eating her alive...

Sighing softly, he got up and looked out the window. ... Shaking his head, trying to sort out the thoughts, he looked to Riza, a serious look on his face, however, it also denoted an unspoken apology.

Her eyes flickered, chestnut flame, when Roy's onyx gaze fell upon her again, and before she had time to think better of it, she had snapped her eyes to the floor.

Wait--no!

She felt the surprise in Roy's energy at her avoidance of his eyes, and her shoulders sagged.

"Sir...hasn't this gone on long enough?" she asked him quietly, her eyes still cast upon the tile floor beneath her feet. "You've been on edge for so long now... Ever since Edward-kun's disappearance, you've not been yourself, and it's beginning to worry everyone..." She steeled herself and raised her eyes to his, then gave a start at the apology within the black orbs. She shook her head sadly. "It...worries me most of all," she admitted, and threaded her fingers together. "I know it's not easy...I know that we've all lost too much over the past few years...but..."--her features hardened--"if you don't move forward, Roy, you'll stagnate."

She saw him jump at the use of his first name, but she didn't stop.

"Whatever happened to Edward-kun, it wasn't your fault," she told him firmly, "so no matter how much we all miss him and wonder for his safety, you cannot continue to let it distract you so much. It's impeding your progress, and I can't let that happen."

She saluted sharply, her face drawn tight in its usual righteous and stoic expression.

"Sir, I won't let you do something I know you're going to regret later. I can't. I made you a promise, and I won't allow you to make a liar out of me just because you've strayed from your path." She pursed her lips and wondered if the next words to come out of her mouth were going to get her court-martialed. "This isn't like you at all, so snap out of it! Stop feeling sorry for yourself, stop blaming yourself for the Elric brothers' misfortunes, and for God's sake, let it go! I won't let you throw away all that you've worked for--all that we've both worked for--because you lost a few important things along the way!"

She lowered the salute and shook her head, her soulful eyes dark and filled with compassion.

"I know it hurts, Roy," she added, quiet almost to the point where he had to strain his ear to hear her, "but you've still got me... I miss Edward-kun, too...we lost a hard worker and a good friend when we lost him..."--she looked at the floor--"but you'll always have me... And if I lose you, then what am I supposed to do...?"

Kat took the map and looked at it. "Well, I wish I could help you, but, like I said, I've never been here before, and...." Kat continued to stare blankly at the map. The piece of paper in front of her probably would have been helpful to most people, but all Kat saw was a tangled mass of nothing.
"... I... can't read maps...." she admitted hesitantly.

"Heheh, you'd be surprised at the number of people who can't either... Well where are you heading to?" Riku asked the other alchemist.

"Well... that's the problem. I have NO idea," Kat answered, embarassed agian.

"if you don't move forward, Roy, you'll stagnate."

He found himself looking to the floor wideyed for a few moments and then brought his eyes up to meet hers. He couldn't believe that she had actually called him by his first name. It had to be a very serious matter to warrant her doing so. It had been several years since he had heard that much urgency in her voice, not to mention, since she had called him by his first name. All he could manage was an almost inaudible "Riza...". Sighing deeply he crossed his arms over his chest and gazed at the floor for a few more moments.

"You may be able to say that so easily, though I cannot let go if it that way. I made a promise to myself. I promised myself that I wouldn't let harm befall those boys. It's almost as if I took it on myself to be a father figure, no, more of a big brother figure. I failed them, and myself." It was not like Roy to openly admit things like this, but he figured if the s**t was going to hit the fan, it may as well. Frowning, he looked to her. "How would you feel if you broke the promise you made me? You'd not be able to forgive yourself, would you? Well, it's the same way for me with those two." Sighing deeply once more, he closed his eyes in thought for a few moments. It was also very much out of character for him to be getting so snippy with Riza. He cared a great deal for her. "Riza... why is it that in times of war and uprising you seem to hurt those people you hold the most dear to yourself?"

With that said, he diverted his eyes to the window and gazed out at the billowing storm clouds. Speaking softly, barely loud enough for her to hear over the thunder outside he mumbled "If something happens to me, I would hope you'd just move on and not bother with being too upset. If I am struck down, it's because I've done more than enough this lifetime to deserve it."

She paused. "Because...that is the nature of war, Sir," she told him. "There are some things that can be helped...but many more that cannot." She lowered her eyes. "Sir, I fear that if I was ever in a position to break my promise to you I would sooner take my own life than live with that weight upon me..." She shook her head. "But we...don't know that Edward-kun is actually dead... He's missing, yes, but can we not still cling ot the hope he's alive somewhere and trying to return here?"

She watched him study her eyes for a moment, and then closed her own sadly.

"I...want to believe that he's still alive...don't you?"

Riza made an audible choking sound, and her jaw fell open despite herself. Normally, she would never have allowed herself to make such a face, but she was so utterly shocked at the brig. gen.'s words that she couldn't help it. She took a deep breath, closed her mouth, and then fisted her hands and marched over to Roy's side, her eyebrows crashing down in fury.

"Sir, I apologize for this in advance," was all she said before she cocked her arm, straightened her fingers, and snapped her body forward to slap him across the face as hard as she could. She heard him grunt in pain and protest as he lurched sideways from the sheer force of the blow, holding his cheek, his eyes venomous as they met hers again.

She didn't move a millimeter when she saw his expression suddenly shift from rage and indignance to confusion and alarm at the sight of the tears gathering at the corners of her eyes. Her shoulders heaving and her hands shaking, she shook her head slowly.

"How dare you...?" she hissed dangerously, and was pelased to see that Roy almost looked a trifle frightened by her tone. "How dare you?!" She took a menacing step toward him, and he held up his arms as if to shield his face from another slap. She felt him jump when she threw her arms around his middle instead.

"How dare you ask me to believe you deserve to pay for your sins with your life...!?" she demanded. "How can you ask me to believe that, Sir? After all we've been through together, after all that we've lost and everything we've strived for... After I have stood by you all this time and held so much at stake for the sake of your dreams, how can you ask me to just forget you should the unthinkable happen?"

Her arms tightened.

"For every life you have taken, surely you have saved one..." she reminded him. "If you deserve to die for what you've done, then so do I..." she whispered, "because I have stood behind every decision you have made. That makes me just as guilty as you, Roy." Her shoulders quaked. "If you go down for your deeds, Sir...you're taking me with you. We burn together."

"I...want to believe that he's still alive...don't you?"

What a silly question that was. Of course he, just as many of the other officers wished and hoped that Edward-kun was alive and well. They didn't want any harm to befall the boy who had set out on his selfless mission, though quite often he could have been percieved as selfish, not selfless. He actually wanted to do nothing more than to restore his brother back to the way he was before the 'accident'. Frowning a bit, he looked away for a moment.

Riza_Hawkeye_Chuui
she cocked her arm, straightened her fingers, and snapped her body forward to slap him across the face as hard as she could.

Blinking in disbelief and pain, his hand reflexively coming up to caress the spot that had just been smacked, he just kind of stared at her. Not sure what to say, nor what to do next. He saw the hint of crystalline tears forming in the corners of her eyes, thus his dark orbs looked upon her questioningly. He hadn't seen her cry for quite some time, nay, he had never seen her cry before.

He was not quite sure what was going on, nor what was making her so upset. He had just stated the truth. She should go in just like anyone else would if the unmentionable happened to him. Sure, she might miss him, but he had hoped that she wouldn't let that stop her from living her life to the fullest.

He knew that she cared a great deal for him, at least as a friend. He didn't realize that she cared that much about him. He knew that she would protect him, but to be honest, he sort of thought she always just viewed it as her job. Frowning, he took off his coat and draped it over the back of his seat.

"R...Riza..." came a startled voice from deep within his chest. For some reason that he could not grasp, he ached from deep within. It pained him so to see her hurt like she was before him right now.

He had killed before in Ishbal and it hurt, but this was a different type of hurt. He hadn't experienced this type of a hurting aching sensation before. Blinking in confusion a bit, still holding on to his hot cheek where there was now a red hand print, he knit his eyebrows together trying to process exactly what was going on. Confusion on this level was not something he was accustomed to. He gently readjusted the eye patch that he still wore over his right eye so that it wasn't resting right on the red handmark, as it smarted quite a bit and there was no sense in rough fabric rubbing up against it at that moment. Touching that eyepatch brought back memories of what had happened several years prior. He was thankful that he was able to come out of that with a slight limp and an eyepatch which he had to wear indefinately.

A loud crash of thunder made him jump a bit and it seemed to make Riza hold on to him a bit tighter yet. He couldn't help but let his lips curl up into a small smile. He reached down and gently lifted her chin. There were a few tears running down her cheeks. With his thumb, he gently grazed her cheeks, removing the wet streaks.

His deep gray orbs gazed down into her eyes for a few moments as he sighed softly. "Riza... I... " He didn't finish. What he was going to say was that he appreciated her standing behind him every step of the way, but the look of pain that was in her eyes was enough to make one keel over.

He wondered if she knew just how much she meant to him and that he would never let her fall for his deeds nor any other reason that had to do with him. He would keep her safe and protected.

With that, he dropped to his knees and pulled her into a warm embrace. His large masculine frame engulfed her smaller feminine one. As arms wrapped around her shoulders in a hold that seemed like it would never be broken, he pondered what was making him do this. He didn't really care, all he knew was that it felt right. He closed his eyes and placed his chin ontop of her head, moving her head to rest on his shoulder while gently rubbing her back. "Riza... everything will be alright. I assure you that..."

His eyes drifted from her to the window. There were now black storm clouds swirling around outside. There was an ominous feel in the air and all he did was wrap his arms around her tighter. He would protect her.

Alphonse sat quietly as he rode the train towards Central City, pndering what he was going to do when he arrived there. The State Alchemists were hated and despised by his teacher, but there were rumours of one, his brother, who was a "man of the people." That was part of what was driving him to find out more about this organization and what the connection was to both Edward and himself. Perhaps there was an answer as to what had happened that he was left alone four years ago in Resembool.

If nothing else there are books there that might be of value in clarifying the gates and why the last attempt to get Ed back was yet another failure. Things seemed so close this time. Why didn't it work? There was little chance that the State Alchemists would help him directly as the gate only seemed to appear for most when human transmutation was attempted, a forbidden act for any alchemist to partake in. There are other ways to get such information, as long as you ask the right questions and hopefully are able to deal with the right people. There was that one State Alchemist the Winry mentioned so long ago... what was his name again? Rob... Ray... Roy...? Something with an R like that was all he really knew. Perhaps heading for Resembool first would be for the best. At least that way I would know who I was looking for.

Looking out the train windows at the landscape flowing past, there was a minor twinge of guilt. He had abandoned his teacher and was planning to stray from her path of instruction yet again. The last time was the beginning of the four years of blankness, and this was followed by restartuing the training in alchemy. Now, after all the years of study and work, he was going to try to deal with those people who served the military and killed at their whim. How can things always seem to end up like this?

As if reacting to his thoughts, the sky before the train was darkening, clouds covering the sky. The storm on the horizon might have been an omen of the times to come, but Al never did put much stuck in such superstitions. Knowing the ways of alchemy and science helped to eliminate a need for such thoughts. Too bad, really... becuse this also meant that there was little use for religion in Al's world as well.

"I wonder if I will ever see him again..."

Light_Ashtoreth

Ashtoreth sighed before running after the pair, "Ed, I'm going to the office anyway, and I believe that you'll want to be present for the report I have."
Looking at Reina she grinned slightly, "You can come too, it's always better to have someone who can help restrain the walking time bomb if he decides to go off on someone."

He stopped at the top of the stairs leading out of Central Station. Blinking a few times, his eyes went from person to person. Now there were several there. He motioned to Ashtoreth that several of her friends had arrived and told her that he would see her around later. Shrugging, he continued to walk ahead with Reina in tow.

Frowning, he raised an eyebrow. How did she know his name? He had never met this person before.

A sudden chill ran up his spine as he stepped out into what had been the daylight several moments earlier. Frowning at the sudden change in weather, he looked back to Reina. "I'm sorry that I was rough back there, it's just that I'm not completely sure what is going on here and I wanted to get out of the station."

Scoffing a bit he shrugged. Central still looked the same as he remembered it from before, not much had changed, there were a few new shops here and there but nothing of major significance. Suddenly rain started falling from the over saturated black clouds that now billowed overhead. The drops fell quickly and saturated his once dry clothing and hair. More shivers ran up his spine, though he was not quite sure what casued him. It was either the chill of the cold automail arm that was attatched to his shoulder or the feeling that hung in the air. Due to the fact that the automail was attatched directly to him, it seemed that whenever it was chilly out it caused him to get cold all over. Almost like the arm was a transmitter for the cold to go to his body.

"Reina, going to Central HQ will have to wait for a bit. This storm looks like it is only going to get worse. Right now, we just need to see about getting shelter." He motioned to the station which now had the doors shut. He walked back to them quickly, thinking that they would go back into the station and wait out the storm, however the doors were locked.

Hmm, that's odd. I didn't realize they closed so early. He walked back over to the window of the station and peered inside, seeing no one close enough to the window, he raised a white gloved fist and pounded on the window. Hard enough to hopefully get someones attention, though not hard enough to break the window.

The wind had now picked up quite a bit, leaves and dirt were blowing all around, thus making visibility next to nothing. Golden eyes darted about, looking for anything that appeared familiar with this limited visibility. Everything seemed foreign though. He did his best to make anything out, but failed. Something did not bode well with him. This storm was not completely of natural causes. There hung an ominous stench in the air as he dashed back out in the street, grabbing Reina's arm.

Dashing forward and making sure that she was still there with him, he headed for the nearest by building. Tugging on the large wooden doors, he realized they were locked. What the hell? Did the whole town just shut up all of a sudden? "Kuso! This won't work! We need to find somewhere else." His long golden hair was now soaked to the point of dripping, the hair becoming a bit too heavy, the ponytail holder fell out. Golden locks spilled down his shoulders as he continued to run ahead.

After a few moments of running through what now was a downpour he arrived at another fairly large building. He couldn't tell what it was, though for some reason it had an air of familiarity around it, he tugged at the door. To his surprise and gratitude the door opened with a bit of a squeak. He made sure Reina got inside and then he pulled the door shut behind him.

Turning around, he realized where they were. Both joy and dread crept up from his abdomen into his throat. He had both been looking forward to this day and dreading it at the same time.

They were at Central Headquarters, Central City.

"R...Riza..." came a startled voice from deep within his chest. ...

She took a deep breath and attempted to collect herself, but didn't have much luck. To think that Roy thought that little of her feelings for him had hit her like a ton of bricks. Forget about him? Move on?? Perhaps it made her a hypocrit for telling him to get over his guilt with Ed...but somehow this felt like an entirely different situation.

Roy had been a fraternal figure to the brothers... The big brother Edward lacked, the father figure Alphonse had barely known... He had gone out of his way to assure the safety of the youngsters, and--contrary to their beliefs--he would have done anything within his power to help them.

But the relationship between Roy and the brothers had been totally different than what was at stake here. Riza had been just as crushed as anyone to learn their fate... It was sad, it was tragic...but it had been nobody's fault. She had taken it with the proverbial grain of salt, bandaged the wounds it had left on her heart, and kept going. But if she ever lost Roy...the wounds inflicted would surely have been fatal ones. While she had been fond of Edward, she loved Roy... She loved him on every possible plane the word could cover. In ways she could't even begin to comprehend. When she had been a child, the simplicity of the word 'love' had been alien on her tongue and confusing to her brain... But now that she had found someone to aim those four letters at, there were times she was downright frightened by its prospects.

After all...it went against the very principle of self-preservation to value someone else's life more than one's own. But Riza was quite convinced she would not have thought twice about taking a bullet in the brigadier general's stead.

When the thunder crashed again, she forgot herself a moment and clenched her fingers around his shirt. Then she felt foolish. She had lost her cool and struck a superior officer. Moreover, she had shouted at the person who was more dear to her than her own life was. What a fool Roy Mustang had turned her into, she mused sardonically. What a lovestruck lunatic he had made her become...

But what a ridiculously wonderful madness love was...

Although momentarily startled by his actions, Riza didn't make any movement to pull out of his embrace. Truth be told, she wasn't sure she could have had she tried... There was a buzz about the office over who was actually stronger...the commander or the liuetenant? Anybody could tell you that Riza was a force to be reckoned with... WHile she had never arm wrestled Roy...or anything of the like...she was confident that he would have a difficult time trying to best her.

Now she wasn't so sure.

As she sank to her knees alongside him, she realized that this wasn't the embrace of a simple course of affection... His grip around her shoulders was so tight...so desperate and needy that she wasn't sure she could have broken it had she wanted to. It was the touch of someone who had been faced with his own mortality far too many times to contemplate the loss of anyone else close to them... It was the same power that had driven Riza to unload clip after clip, round after round after round of cold, steel bullets into the voluptuous raven-haired Homunculus who had claimed to have taken Roy's life that day so many years ago. It was the same passion and desperate carnal magnetic pull that had pushed her to the edge of her psyche and forced her to walk down a fine line between Roy's life and her own senses. When did the life of your soul mate become more important than your own...?

She closed her eyes and rested her head on his shoulder, listening to the steady sound of his heart as it thumped beneath his skin. She would have been more than happy to just stay that way forever... Together, they were safe there in that office... Nothing could hurt them anymore... Nothing could drive the nails of contrition any further into their hearts...

But Riza knew they couldn't stay that way for long.

There was work to be done... Paperwork to be filed, forms to be filled out... There were orders to issue and commands to be given. There was a big, scary world out there that they still had to face, no matter how much they didn't want to...

With a reluctant sigh, Riza put her hands on Roy's shoulders and gently pushed back, and his arms slid away from her. Still kneeling on the floor, she shook her head gently.

"Don't make empty promises, Roy," she chided. "Don't tell me it's going to be all right..." He started to protest to her words. She covered his lips with one slender finger. "Show me," she went on, slowly rising to her feet. "Show me that you can stand up and move forward the way Edward-kun would have wanted you to. Show me you can still be that amazing man who has left me in awe for all the years I've known him... Show me you have the strength to put the past behind you and live for the present... Live for the future..." She smiled softly and extended her hand to pull him to his feet. "Show me, Sir..." she said again, "that you'll be all right..."--she kissed his brow before he had risen to his full height--"and then you can tell me..."

And without another word, she released his hand, smoothed her hair, and wiped a stray tearstain from her cheek before she saluted him crisply.

"No matter the path you choose, Roy Mustang, I will always be two steps behind you...." she assured him. A thin smile crossed her lips. "I'd follow you to hell and bring you back, Sir, if I had to." He looked surprised at her words. She tilted her head toward his chair. "But before hell, Sir, I think you still have some paperwork to sign..."

There was a pause of thick silence, and then, despite himself, Roy Mustang laughed out loud...something he hadn't done in a very long time...

Ashtoreth looked at the on coming storm from the Central building, her eyes sharp, "Something's coming."

She heard the door slam shut and two pairs of foot steps, one having a slightly heavier landing on one foot.

'Ed, meaning the other is Reina,' she thought sighing, 'thought to be a ghost, while memories are what keep you going.'
Her eyes turned back to the area as she saw something move quickly, she focused her eyes to see green and black.

"s**t!" She instantly started running down the corridors to where she had heard Roy and Riza.

She pushed open the door without hesitation only to find the two in a deep embrace; she pulled the door partially shut.

"Don't mean to interrupt you two, but we've got a problem. I think I saw Envy... Mustang if your listening I need you to get everyone in you office immediately." She was about to go off but stopped, "Roy-san, Riza-san, I thought you may want to know, Ed's here." Then she was gone.

((I edited it hoping it sounds a little more respectful, I was just trying to make my character sound excited, I can't fix it anymore without changing later posts so sorry... again.))

"But before hell, Sir, I think you still have some paperwork to sign..."
a moment after he processed what she had said, a hearty laugh errupted from deep within him. Indeed, it was something he hadn't done for quite some time and it felt damn good. A smile actually crept across his lips. Not some sort of half smirk, but a true, genuine smile. He patted her head briefly as he looked toward the window, looking at what the storm was doing now.

"Wow... it's really coming down out there, isn't it? I hope these buildings can withstand this." His saying so was emphasized by the creaking of the building. The storm outside was causing the building to sound like a giant mammoth that was waking up from a hundred year nap. He eyed Riza uneasily as he looked toward the window again.

Suddenly his dark gray orbs were diverted to the door as it sprung open. In the door way he saw a younger lady standing. Frowning a bit at her rudeness for entering uninvited he shrugged as he looked to Riza. He noticed a look of surprise on her face as well. They had both never seen this young lady before.

"Can we help you miss..? W..what did you say?" His voice rose a bit as he heard her mention the name Envy as well as Ed. What was the chance she was talking about Edward Elric? Slim to none he figured. The corner of his lips turning down into a bit of a frown at her, he began to ask her if she was speaking of Edward Elric, however, she was already gone.

For some reason something awoke inside of him. It was a feeling of hope and a light at the end of the tunnel. Maybe, just maybe Edward was alive. Then his mind went crashing to the other name she had mentioned.

Envy... Envy was a homunculi. What on earth was he doing here? He had disappeared around the time Ed did. Frowning, he realized that all of what had happened may very well not be behind them. He rested a hand on Riza's shoulder as he looked to her. "Well... what now? Could Edward-kun possibly be alive? Also..." He trailed off leaving the sentence unfinished. He could tell that she knew what he was going to say.

That was the benifit of knowing someone for as long as he had known Riza. They could pretty much finish eachother's thoughts mentally. He removed his white gloved hand and stepped toward the door. At that very instant a loud crash resounded off of the walls. Within a split second, the once lit office and building faded to blackness. There were no more lights.

He moved back to his desk, tripping over a chair in the process, to light a candle that he had on it. Snapping his fingers, red flames erupted from their tips showering down on the candle and suddenly basking the office in a yellowish glow. Opening his desk drawer he pulled out a few more candles and lit them as well, handing one to Riza. "Well partner, let's go see what happened." He spoke the words with a light smile. He was hoping that he would find Edward alive and find that Envy was just in the girls imagination. Though the feeling in his stomach told him otherwise.

As the train pulled into the station at Central City, Alphonse gathered his traving bag and his coat, getting bundled up for the inclement weather he saw on the way into the city. There was a little anxiety about finally arriving here for some strange reason, but he pushed out of the rail car's exit anyhow, determined to get the answers he needed.

As he stood in the vast space of the rail station he saw that there were other trains waiting there, not moving out as he had originally expected. Can the storm really be that bad outside? It has to really be coming down for the trains to not be moving. Just then he noticed that the ticket kiosk was boarded up, as if this helped to explain what was going on around him.

As Al scanned the platform for who was milling about, he noticed a flock of girls seemed to be milling about like they were looking for someone. I guess there is someone of importance who is coming in today. I wonder who it could be? Of course, they could all just be here on a group trip of some sort, and be out of place because of the bad weather.

He moved off towards the exit into the main throughfare, pulling his jacket tigher as he looked for a place to head for. the rain was coming down in sheets, and he was having a little difficulty seeing where to go. A large building loomed in the distance, just at the edge of his perception, a darker area within the downpour. He managed a good grip on his suitcase and hurried in the direction of the shadow, hoping the doors would be about in the middle of the building, trying not to get too soaked.

Riza smiled. It was so good to hear him laugh. He didn't do that often as it was...but to finally see a crack in the cast he had built around himself since Edward's disappearance was a breath of fresh air to the lieutenant. After so many weeks of lingering beneath the clouds that had gathered over the brig. gen.'s head...she was finally seeing a promise of sunlight again...

Er...which was more than could be said for the weather outside at the moment...

Riza went back into no-nonsense mode.

"I'm sure this building was erected fully to city code, Sir," she said firmly. "Therefore it should be able to bear the brunt of a simple thunderstorm."

Her eyes widened at the stranger's words.

"Sir, what in the world was she..."--then she made a face, and forgot herself momentarily--"Sir, who the hell was that?"

He shrugged briefly and appeared to be wondering the same thing. Then she jumped, startled, when a crash of thunder shook the building.

Riza froze when the darkness fell upon them.

"Sir?" she whispered in the darkness, and felt him squeeze her shoulder and then he was no longer beside her..

She nodded once and watched as the red flames danced crismon light across his face. She was certain the same thoughts must have been running through his mind as were running through her own.

Edward's return would have thrown everything into upheaval. As happy as she knew she would have been to see the boy again, there would have been so many questions to answer and so much disarray to attempt to straighten that things would threaten to get abhorrently out of hand. Although, she couldn't help wondering if Roy would somehow manage to pull some strings--the way he always had when the Elrics were involved--to get the boy off the hook again...?

She grinned at the thought. Perhaps things wouldn't be so unmanageable after all...

But what was more...was the threat of Envy... Surely one of the most wicked and twisted of the Homunculi they had dealt with in the past, if Envy had returned, trouble was surely ahead... But if Edward had come back as well...the trouble...was certainly going to be much more than double...

First Lieutenant Jean Havoc sprinted down the long tiled corridors of Central HQ, his boots thudding loudly in the silence of the sudden power outage, his trusty Zippo the only thing lighting his path. His ever-present cigarette dangling precariously from his lips, he careered around a corner and dashed toward Roy's office. The buzz about HQ was that Edward Elric--the Fullmetal Alchemist who had gone missing weeks ago--had suddenly returned and was right here in HQ! He had to inform the junshou! His boots slid on the tile, and he grabbed the wall for balance before screeching around another corner.

Of course...not long ago, such antics would have been all but impossible for the young lieutenant. After (shamefully) being on the losing end of a battle with a certain female homunculus, Havoc had been left paralyzed from the waist down. He had thought his military career...and the prospects of continuing a normal life...were over for him... But the miracles of modern science had astounded him all over again and, after coming to terms with the idea of dealing with the impediment for the rest of his life...Havoc had been more than overjoyed to learn it could be rectified.

And what was more...he had even gotten a promotion out of it. A second gold star now adorned the shoulder of his uniform; that combined with the full use of his legs again had left Havoc in a reverie he was certain few people could comprehend.

Turning another corner, the flame from his lighter casting eerie shadows off the walls, he screeched to a halt when he heard an unfamiliar voice in the hallway, addressing Mustang and Hawkeye. Snapping the lighter shut, he pressed his back to the wall and waited a moment until he heard the door close and teh fall of the stranger's footsteps.

His blue eyes narrowed. Havoc may not have been the most studious of Mustang's subsidiaries...he may not have been the smartest...he may not have been the most technically inclined... But his loyalty to his commander was commendable, and his memory was sharper than even his tongue.

The voice he had heard in the hall did not belong to anyone he knew...nor anyone who had the permission to just barge in on Roy Mustang's office that way. Havoc cracked his knuckles and slid along the wall in the darkness. Whoever this girl was, Havoc didn't know her...and from the tone he had heard in the brig. gen.'s voice, Mustang didn't know her either.

Listening to her footfalls, he eased along the wall and got in front of her, pulled his Zippo out of his pocket, and flicked it open just as she had walked far enough to be stading right before him.

"Ya~, jouchan," he drawled lightly, chewing on the cigarette, "didn't anybody ever tell you it was awful rude to enter a commanding officer's office without knocking first?" He lifted a sandy eyebrow. "And I don't recall seeing your face around Central before..."--he noted her uniform, cast a look at the stripes on her shoulder, realized she outranked him, but didn't back down either way--"Shousa..."

He took a drag off the cigarette and blew it over his shoulder behind him.

"I know I'm in no position to give orders to you, Ma'am"--he enunciated the word with a slight edge of sarcasm--"but perhaps it'd behoove you to introduce yourself before making yourself quite so at home around here..."

((i read thru the whole thing, Ash, and i couldn't find any persona bio on you, really...and since Roy and Riza seemed equally as confused as to who you were...figured i'd give you an excuse to introduce yourself. sweatdrop kono RP wa tanoshiso~~ desu ne... heh heh...i look forward to seeing where this goes. njya~))

Ashtoreth gave the man a cold look, "Ashtoreth Sora, energy alchemist. As for barging in on Mustang, we've got more pressing matters to attend to. Now if you'll excuse me First Lieutenant, I have somewhere to be."

With that said, Ash sprinted down the corridors.

When near the door, Ash saw two figures. Letting her bionic implants switch to night vision, Ash sighed in relief to find Ed and Reina.

"Ed! Go to Mustang's office, pretty sure he hasn't moved since you've been... away," She then turned to Reina, "Though you're not registered in the military, go with him, it's better to stay in large groups."

Turning towards the door, she seemed to be thinking, "Oh! Ed, if I don't hear from three different sources that you were in that office, so help me, you'll wish Izumi-sensei was the one scolding you!"

Then she ran into the storm.
