*Pushing his way through the darkness of the fo'cstle..*

"Why aren't these lights already lit? I'll have the hide off of the midshipman's back that did not do his duty. Godsakes it dark..."

*Lighting a lantern, he continued down the narrow corridor that lead to the doctors quarters. Verily soon, he found himself at Baxter's door.*

"Reginald? Are you in?"

*Knocking quite hard, the door opened slowly and the Captain stepped into a small cabin that was rather well lit. Stepping into the hall to hang the lantern where it was most needed, he returned to the cabin.*

*Looking about the empty cabin, he spots no one. Not even a lump in the bed. Wearily he turns to make for the upperdecks.*

"Oh dear... where ever could he be?"

*Still holding her wrist as she went below, Jaden tried to shake off a little of the water her clothes decided it must retain as she headed to the med deck. Getting to the door, she winced a little as she instinctively reached out and grabbed the door handle with her right hand. She willed her hand to close around the metal handle, but to no avail, it refused to respond. She cupped her right with her left a moment before entering the medical deck sighing to herself*

"Ok, I'm here.... but without my other hand, how in the hell am I going to complete this task..." she groaned at her own stubborness over her injury.
"I'll have to figure out something..." she thought as she steadied herself once again as the boat rocked again against the waves of the turbulent sea.

*Taking the handle with her left hand, she entered the medical deck and shut the door behind her just as she thought she heard the hatch slam shut above deck. Since no one had been in the infirmary since the party, the deck was dark and oddly quiet as she searched for something to illuminate the room. She found a match and a small lantern hanging beside the door that she lit and took off the hook on the wall. She looked about the infirmary for the sack of sand she had used earlier. It was sitting in a slump in a remote corner of the room. On her way over, Jaden passed a few shiny glass doors to the cabinets nearby when she stopped for a moment. She looked into them and her face fell a little. Her hand wasn't the only thing that was bashed about on the deck. Now that there was a lack of water pouring over her or beads of sweat rolling down her face, the cuts from rolling down the deck came into full view. Every gash, slash and gouge on her hands and face were red, raw and bloody from the saltwater in the wounds. She quickly wiped away a streak of blood that began to trickle down her cheek from her hairline before she shook the thought off of other places that may be bloodied and bruised from her little trip down the deck and hurried off to complete her goal.

She took the now dry pail she had used earlier to hold the water while scrubbing the floors and filled it with as much sand as she could carry one handed. Obviously, she was going to have to make a couple of trips as she lugged the pail over one-handed to the table. She had just set the first pail of sand on the floor to scoop out and scatter with her left hand as she heard a shuffle of footsteps coming toward the infirmary.*

Reginald dragged the still unconcious sailor down the hall way with his arms wrapped under the arms of his patient and wrapped around said chest. As he reached the makeshift operating room, he noticed the door still closed.

"Odd, I thought Miss Kale was coming down here to get sand down, oh well no matter. I'll have to improvise."

Baxter leaned his back on the door, carefully removed one of his hands and grabbed the knob. He shoved into his deck and pulled his patient along behind. He then maneuvered him up onto the table.

Now he noticed that there were traces of sand around the table, and that the room was illuminated. He then saw Miss Kale near the sand bag in a bloody mess, favoring her right hand.

"OK, that's enough, you go have a seat in the corner there, I'll see to you in a minute," Baxter started to walk over to the sand bag when the ship keeled hard to one side causeing him to lose balance and slide into the cabinets; his left shoulder went through one of the glass windows in the doors. Immediate pain shot through that part of his body. He put it out of his mind as he saw what became of the others in the room. The lad he had brought down here had fallen off the table, as if he hadn't been through enough already.

Miss Kale was sitting in the corner, no doubt forced there by the sudden movement of the ship. She was still concious, which was good.
"Don't move; stay there." He got up and walked over to the sand bag. He poored some more into the pail that got lodged under the bag. he then poored it around the table and set to work on his patient whom he had placed back on the table.

His hands were run ragged from the rigging line ripping from his hands. Reginald did his best to clean out the open wounds and wrapped the seamen's hands in cloth. The doctor then pulled off the shirt of his patient and found a name sewn into the inside,
"Higgins."

"Well, that's nice to know," Baxter said to himself and rolled Mr. Higgins onto his side. The areas of his body that collided with the wall were black and swollen. "Lucky for him he's unconcious, this is going to hurt." Baxter produced a scalpel, and he made a few incisions over each blackened area to let out excess blood and relieve the pressure. He then cleaned out his cuts and bandaged him up.

Now to the part that worried Reginald the most; Higgins' head had slammed hard off the cabin wall and was swollen. Things were no doubt awry inside this man's skull, but Baxter wouldn't know for sure until he woke up... IF he woke up. For now all that could be done is a compress wrapped around his head and doused in cold water, which Baxter did. He then drug him to his bunk and returned to the Medical Deck to tend to his next patient, Miss Kale.

*As the ship pitched to one side, Jaden felt herself lose her balance once more and fall into the heavy sandbags in the corner. She stupidly tried to brace for the fall and landed on her right hand, wrenching it even more. She yelped in pain as she tried to muffle her shout by biting her lip.

She heard the Doctor shatter one of the cabinet windows as his shoulder smashed into it as well as hearing the sailor he brought below topple to the floor. She heard the Doctor tell her not to move but she needed to sit down in a position that was far less uncomfortable. Still trying to be strong in the face of obvious pain she bit her lip again rather hard as she repositioned herself on the sandbags and remained seated.

Jaden tried to watch the doctor as he worked on the crewman but her eyes started to swim. The exertion of getting back to the main hatch after sliding down the deck as well as her body banging off of the random items was begining to finally catch up to her. Sandbags may not be the most comfortable place to fall asleep, but exhaustion and pain caused her to pass out on the burlap bags as she vaguely noticed the Doctor bandage up Higgins.*

"OK, come on, get up on the ta-," Baxter looked over and noticed that Miss Kale had passed out from exhaustion. He kneeled down and put his hand on her shoulder.

As he gently shook her he spoke,
"Miss Kale, you must get up now, a burlap sack is no place to sleep, and I need to check your injuries."
PostPosted: Sun Sep 17, 2006 7:27 pm

*She didn't realize she had been asleep and could have sworn that she had merely closed her eyes but a moment. Coming to, she looked around rather suprised. Seeing the Doctor kneeling right before her and shaking her awake, she scooted back towards the wall just a bit and tried to focus on him. Shaking just a little, Jaden tried to answer Reginald, her eyes still swimming from the pain in her hand and the scratches, scrapes and bruises on her body.*

"Wha... I wasn't...you were just wo-" she pointed towards the table and looked over, expecting Higgins to be laying still upon it, only to find it empty and cleaned off. She sighed, exhausted and admitting she fell asleep, and looked up at the Doctor.
"You um... said you needed to check my injuries?" she asked as she held her hand gingerly within the other while attempting to get up from the makeshift burlap bed she had fell asleep upon. "Surely you could help someone else before me..."

*Above deck, the crew had been fighting the foretop which snapped as easily as a twig and blew off into the sea on the port side. This is what made the boat lurch earlier and caused the Doctor to crash into the cabinetry and her to topple into the burlap sandbags. During her brief slumber however, the crew and Captain laboured to remove the anchor-like mast. They had just freed the ship of its detrimental dead weight when Jaden had come to and had started to get back to her feet, trying desperately to feign any possible sign of injury. That's about when the Lady decided to lurch forward away from the entangled mess of the foretop mast.

She had just gotten to her feet and had begun to straighten up, only to be thrown towards Reginald by the boat's recent freedom from her anchorous mass. She fell into his chest unexpectedly, and winced slightly from the aches and pains she had already.*

"I'm.... so... sorry..." She said, blushing a deep crimson, about the same color as the rest of her irratated wounds.

As the ship lurched again, Baxter managed to maintain his footing. As Jaden fell into his chest he grit his teeth to stifle any sounds as the pain in his shoulder shot back to life.

"It's fine; sit there on the table and we'll see what we can do."

He led miss Kale over to the table, "move as quick as you can now, I'll have more word to do soon enough."
PostPosted: Fri Sep 22, 2006 12:20 pm

*She gingerly climbed up on to the table, her bruises and wounds aching and her hand throbbing yet unable to move.*

"really, Reg-" she stopped short, cleared her throat, and corrected herself, "Sorry, I mean... Doctor... I'll be fine... my injuries can wait." she rambled off as she placed her right hand in her left very carefully and as inconspicuously as she could.

*Jaden looked around the infirmary over to where the broken shards of glass lay on the floor near the cabinetry. Remembering the Doctor hitting his shoulder in the panel, she looked back and saw his shoulder red and bloody from the encounter.*

"Perhaps you should fix yourself up first... you'll need to be able to move that shoulder if you are helping others." She motioned to his shoulder with a nod of her head.

"I'm the doctor here, I'll worry about who's injuries are more severe. As you can see, I move my shoulder just fine," Baxter carefully moved his arm about as he said this.

"Now then, let me see your hand," Reginald carefully Jaden's right hand and extended the arm out toward him, slowly turning the hand palm up. He gently squeezed all around the wrist. "Congratulations, Miss Kale. You only wrenched it quite badly, nothing broken." With that said he put a splint on to immobilize the hand.

He then proceeded to clean and bandage the more serious cuts she sustained during the storm, while passing over the small surface scratches. He also wrapped a fair amount of damp linen around both of Miss Kale's hands to help treat the brush burns she had fro holding onto the ropes.

"There, you should be fine now, You shouldn't be doing any heavy lifting with that hand so try to help out with easier tasks for the time being. I'd best be going above to check the rest of the crew now."

Baxter prepared his bag with several items needed for treating small injuries. Barring any serious wounds, he would just treat them all up on deck.

*She winced at the squeezing of her wrist while the Doctor checked to see what injury she had sustained. To her relief, she was not going to suffer through weeks of agonizing torture with an immoble hand. On the other hand, she was going to go through a couple weeks of not being able to manipulate her lockpicking tools. The bandages wrapped around her hands made them far too clumsy to be so agile with a set of lockpicks. Sighing at this realization, she sat quietly as he continued to wrap her hands in bandages.

Once he finished with cleaning the wounds and wrapping her cuts, she looked down and her hands. She had once heard of ancient cultures in lands like Egypt who wrapped their dead in bandages until completely covered. Although the Doctor didn't quite do that, she did feel rather incumbered by the wraps on her hands. They were, indeed, quite the nuisance for a theif even if she wasn't going to make a point of stealing from anyone aboard the ship. Anymore.

She spent a great deal of time fussing over the dull pain of her wounds and the dull sensation she got when touching her hands and fingers together due to the bandages blocking out her more tactile sensations. She hadn't noticed that the Doctor was packing up supplies to go back above deck. It wasn't until she heard the door open to the medical deck that she realized Reginald was leaving the deck.

She sighed at her situation and slowly got off the table. Instinctually holding her injured hand, she went through the door and closed the medical deck door before going above to the stinging sea air.*

Reginald had just made it to his quarters adjacent to his makeshift operating room when he heard the bell go off, and a muffled yell. He set his bag down next to his footlocker and dediced he should head back above to check out the commotion.

Escorting John in, he pointed to one of the tables,
"Let's have you sit there shall we."

He then walked over to the cabinet to fetch some thread and a needle. He then walked back to the table.

"John, this is going to hurt; no sudden movements though." He bent over to put the wound at eye level. As gently as he could, he stuck two fingers from his left hand inside the wound and spread it open, checking to see it any of John's innerworkings were damaged. He saw one artery and it was no longer bleeding, meaning it was only nicked and was able to clot on it's own.

"Well, that's good enough. John, the blade that once called this cleaved area of your flesh `home' managed to nick an artery, thus all of the blood. No sharp movements of any sort for quite awhile, lest you open the vessel again."

He then proceeded to stitch up either side of the wound. He then bound the area in bandages and a compress to help keep the wound closed so that it might heal properly.

"If you walk carefully, and I do mean carefully, preferably having somebody attend you, then you should be able to attend in the Wardroom. In fact I know just the person, Miss Kale shall be you escort when she arrives. So how about that, not only will you have somebody to help you out, but it will be a pretty lady to boot. Not that I recommend acquiring serious injuries to pick up women. NOw if you excuse me, I must be getting back to the wardroom, and so should you for that matter. Please tell Miss Kale that I humbly request that she tend to the mess I made in here after escorting you to the wardroom?"

Alright, Thanks for the help.

*slowly and carefully sits up on the medical bed, John takes a deep breath and then plant his feet to the ground. John slowly walks over to the nearest wall, extends one arm to the wall to help him assist his walk out to the main deck where he could find Miss Kale*

*Jaden walked through the door to the infirmary and sighed from relief. Although John's wounds made quite the mess, it wasn't even a fraction of the cleaning job she had to attend to when she was first found on the boat. Mainly she had to clean some minor instruments and wash down the operating table and lay new sand. She rolled up her sleeves and small smile curled across her face as she set off for a pail of water and some soap to clean everything thuroughly.

Once back with the pail, she scrubbed the delicate instruments first, making sure they were the most clean. Not knowing if he had used a simple needle or any of the other few pieces, it was best she cleaned them all and be sure. Once dried by the air, she wrapped them in a small towel to keep them from rolling off the counter. She then turned to the table. Most of the blood was still wet or slightly sticky, just starting to set into the wood grain. She took out the brush and scrubbed diligently til it came up in about 20 minutes or so. Finally, she swept up the old sand and went to the bags in the corner and retrieved a new layer of sand to place at the foot of the table.

After about a half an hour, she looked at her work and wiped a bit of good labor off her brow, went back above deck to dump the bloody water. She stood at the rail a moment to feel the cool breeze upon her face and somewhat refresh herself before heading back below to sit beside the wardroom door. She ran her hands through her hair and reached down to her pouch on her waist, fishing out the black satin ribbon she had stowed away in there. As the soft material slipped through her fingers, she remembered that it once enclosed the letter she gave the Doctor. Smiling to herself, she slid it under her hair and pulled it up into a tail to keep it off her shoulders. Less hair in the way means less chance to have John accidentally pull it as she has him lean on her while leading him to a bunk.

Content with everything being in order, she headed to the Wardroom to sit outside the door and wait.*

*She hurried down the steps and through the entrance of the infirmary. Jaden slipped through the door and fell back against it, closing it shut. She closed her eyes and slid to the floor, emmitting a deep and heavy sigh. She couldn't believe she had just been so rash. After a few moments and after regaining a bit of composure, she got back to her feet and wiped the embarassment from her brow before setting up the task of getting everything in order for the Doctor.

She went to the cupboard and pulled all the bandages in stock and laid them out carefully as she counted them. She then began to make sure his tools were in place and within easy reach. Jaden made ready the beds in the infirmary as well before looking about. Taking note of the fact she'll no doubtedly reset sand before the day was through (be it good or bad), she filled a bucket close by for swift preparation.

Now she began to worry in her little idle time. What was soon to happen plagued her thoughts and she found herself wondering what this next battle would entail and who amongst the crew would find their way to the operating table. Her thoughts went back to the Doctor for a moment before she shook her head and tried desperately to find something else to do before she alerted the doctor that all was in place.*
