my least favorite quote:

Raoul: "Clearly, Madame Giry, genius has turned to madness."
-04 phantom

god i just want to slap the s**t out of him when he says that! Erik is not mad! he is in love for the first time, damn it! you try having a deformity on your face and then tell me he's insane!!! scream

ok, im done now sweatdrop

Actually, he is insane. Erik was (I'm going by the 2004 musical movie plot) a young boy of at least twelve or thirteen when he was rescued from a travelling freak show. Goodness only knows how he got there, how long he was there, and what he endured. Then to be shoved underground with nothing but one girl taking care of him, he had no way to develop social skills. Not only that, but his entire life excluding Mme. Giry was made up of human cruelty. That he was harboring an innocent affection for a girl could only turn into vice and insanity because of his life.

So, really, Erik is insane.
What she said. Having a deformity on your face does not exempt you from insanity, it merely provides a catalyst into insanity.
A man going around killing for the sake of well... just killing, kidnapping people, with a total lack of social knowledge or social skills and apparently no way to know right from wrong, yeah I'd say he's pretty insane. But that's one of the reasons why he is pitied by the viewers.
yeah, but... its just the way raoul says it!! he's so... augh!!!

And how was he supposed to say it? With his eyes crossed and his nose turned up in a snout?

It's a serious a grave line. It's supposed to be said the way he did.

You have to study Madame Giry's state in the situation, put it in context- she's feeling horrible, even at fault perhaps for what has been going on and is kinda... perhaps deceiving herself... I think Raoul was trying to be frank and honest.

She's halfway hysterical, really. She's trying to explain away Erik's behavior as her fault and the fault of things she should've done or not done. Raoul tries to calm her, but has to end up putting his two cents of the obvious in. Because rightfully, though he is a genius, he is absolutely mad with love and rejection.

Raoul de Chagney, hated mostly for his brutal honesty, not his foppery...Yeah, I can see that pretty well. Although, of course, because Erik's situation is rather unique -He was in a freak show, remember, and his mother hated him for his physical appearence- it seems kind of hard not to go insane for the one person who "accepts" you. Though yeah, he is a little mental.

Well he's got this sort of paranoia built up in him making him think everyone hates him. Whereas I'm sure Christine would've done the friends kinda thing with him had Erik not gone ballistic on her, he really brought all that upon himself and feeds that thought pattern.

This paranoia, once again, starts because of his deformity causing everyone to think he's a freak. Being born with a death's head for a face affected his mental state because it affected how others treated him, socially, physically and emotionally.

That's not entirely the cause, though. It started it, but with his mother hated him fueled the thought process that, no matter what, he would be hated for that face. While I'm sure Christine was disgusted by it and stuff, had he not acted so outragiously, she may've gotten over it and simply pitied him instead.

That's a theory. But think about it, it couldn't have been just her voice. She was pretty, she was young, and she was polite. Add that voice to it all and she's definately the ideal girl for, really, ANY guy. While his main reason would have been music, I think Erik was in love with her wholly and not just her voice. Because remember, she didn't sing well when he first discovered her.

Leroux's Book Quotes:

"You shall never see Erik's face."
"I will play you Mozart, if youlike, which will only make you weep; but my Don Juan, Christine, burns"
"When a woman has seen me, as you have, she belongs to me. I am a kind of Don Juan, you know!....Look at me! I am Don Juan triumphant!"
