I just finished Phantom today after less than two weeks of owning it. I LOVE IT! It's so amazing yet incredibly depressing. Little did Erik know he would have thousands of fan girl oogling over him in the future.

I just finished the book, and I was slightly disappointed by the ending. I adored the book up until Christine entered- that's when I got agitated. She felt very very out of character to me and it felt like yet another book that was twisted to make Christine truly be in love with Erik which by my reading of Leroux's book isn't what happened. *twitchspasm* I liked all the Erik background... I did love that, it made me happy, but the ending severly disappointed me....
And spoilers since some people have not read: Also I felt that the whole Christine had Erik's child, nearly died, and then could not have Raoul's child is done WAY too much since the ENTIRETY of Progeny was based on that.
In conclusion I LOVED up to page 339, I liked Christine's first journal entry but the rest made me cringe.

Kay really did mess up with Christine. Then again, the whole original plot that she added liberties to wasn't that great. And I agree the ending was not right, even if it did make me like Raoul's character. She gets points for not bashing the poor guy.
But then again, people buy it for the before of the story. Not the during or the after. If we wanted the during, we'd read the original book. If we wanted an after... well... keep wishing.

I did get twitchy at the original plot part but her description of his life prior was wonderful. I didn't so much like the part with Giovani but it was nice. I feel like the whole Christine didn't have Raoul's child and never will.... was one big punishment to Raoul

And Christine bearing Erik a child and not her husband irks me. I would think Raoul would be more capable than Erik. We don't know how far his deformity went after all. What I truly dislike about the book is how every woman Erik comes upon in his life loves him. I know Kay writes romance for a living, but for God sake, y'know?

From the moment Lucia entered I knew she was gonna die *cackle* But you're right... too much Erik loving... and since he was what.. 13 during that part I think it would have lessened the emotional scars since he was still developing. Progeny was based ENTIRELY on the whole Christine and Raoul were raising a child that looks like neither of them and is very musically talented and Christine knew he was Erik's and nearly died carrying him and couldn't have another child. Oi... Giovanni was a nice chapter... but that's about it... it would have been fine without it.

In the very end of the book, it's apparent to me that she would have been a lot happier if she had ended up with Erik! She was depressed until she had Charles, then when she dies, Raoul says that "she was with the one she wanted to be with" or something like that. SHE SHOULD BE WITH ERIK! THEY WOULD HAVE BOTH BEEN HAPPY!

I mean come ON. She would've been forced to live UNDERGROUND the rest of her life, and so would've their child. Do you know how many illnesses and diseases come from being exposed constantly to DAMP, WET, AND FILTHY areas? Not to mention the rats and that water! Christine would've died sooner from a disease and their son would have been too ill to do s**t. Not to mention Erik DIED. The boy would've been left alone underground probably to follow in his father's footsteps, which, FYI, ain't such a grand idea.

Are you kidding me? gonk I was emotionally scarred when that virgin was given to him and he was so extremely kind to her but she refuses to go near him and he basically says "So you'd rather die than lie with me? *emo sigh*" Omigod I cried for like two hours after that passage crying

But c'mon the girl was, what, fifteen? And she had been trained all her life to be a sexual slave. Then to be given to a man who had a repuation as the Angel of Death, not to mention that whacked mask, I'd be scared too.

About your murderous rage- I wanted to do that too but I feared being warned for flaming or something XD I completely agree with you... not to mention the fact that Christine does not love him.

The level of flaming depends, really. I wouldn't have done anything since you'd have been in the right.
Plus, I was having a b***h moment then. *shrug*
