Maia made a face at Toby. She crossed her arms. She really didn't want classes to end. They were enjoyable. She followed him back.
She Sat closer to Dari. "He's sick," she told him.

She could make all the faces she wanted. That didn't mean they had unending time and resources at their disposal. The money would end too, but she still had a good long while before she had to worry about that.
Dari opened his mouth to speak, but Toby beat him to it.
"I can hear you," the werewolf said, not taking his eyes from his screen and sipping his coffee. 'Coffee.' He wasn't 100% sure it wasn't motor oil.

"That's fine, I meant you to," Maia said. "When classes do end, can you teach me at home, Dari?" she asked, hopefully. "And after work, do you want to go shopping with me? I want to make something specific for dinner tonight."

Toby arched a brow but again did not turn toward Maia. Alright then. At least she wasn't trying to be sneaky. It was still a bit weird for her to talk to only Dari about him, though. At least dinner wasn't bizarrely personal.
"Sure," Dari nodded. "Just me, or...?" He gestured toward Toby. They'd all come in the same car, after all.

"He can one too," Maia assured Dari. "I'm making soup. I looked up a recipe," She looked to Toby. "You should rest when we get home," she suggested. "I'll bring your dinner to you."

Now his blue orbs perked up again, meeting Maia over the top of his monitor. "I'm fine." Here they went again. He had to be careful. The selkie was probably still on a warpath and he highly doubted she was going to tell him when the warnings dropped. "I prefer dinner at the table."
At the end of it all, chicken noodle soup had been pretty depressing. It wasn't like mom used to make or anything, but the fact that someone was trying to care for him in such a way made him sort of sad. He ate quietly, the tinkling of spoons against bowls often the only sound, and when everyone was done he got up and took everyone's bowls without warning.

Somehow the soup had made it worse. Maia was rather disheartened by this turn of events and ate in silence. She sighed and folded her arms on the table, resting her head on them. Toby was miserable and she had yet to be able to make it better.

Toby cleaned and rinsed and put the dishes in the dishwasher. He hadn't made dessert. Next time he would. Without a word he wandered off to brush his teeth ad get into his pajamas.
Dari was trying desperately to keep everything calm and content.
"So, what do you want to do tonight?" he asked Maia.

"Nothing really," Maia said, looking to Dari from her spot on the couch. Shed curled her legs under her, and looked particularly gloomy. "I don't know how to make him better. He's acting all weird and I know something's wrong but I don't know what and I tried helping..."
"Want to try finding Nessie?"

"He'll be fine," Dari reassured her, and then nodded. "Sure. We could try that." Everything was still tense and odd, though, and it only felt stranger when Toby emerged and sat cross-legged at the edge of the sofa and connected his controller.

After a while, Maia was leaning against Dari. She'd grown tired of the game after spotting the sea monster and having it escape again. "We'll never keep up," She complained, yawning and nesting against her favorite alien.
"I love you guys," she said, putting her controller down and hugging each of them. "Lets play tomorrow?"

"I don't think we're supposed to yet," Dari said softly. He looked to Maia as she fell on him and then smiled and offered her a hug. "I love you too, Maia."
Toby said nothing, but he gave Maia a bit of a stronger hug than usual. "Sure. We'll find it."

Maia wandered up the stairs, got ready for bed and brushed her teeth. She climbed in, but didn't fall asleep. She stared up at the ceiling. She'd told Dari She hadn't thought it was selkie love. That it was genuine. But what if it was?
What if it wasn't? Would she ever know? What if she kept having this feeling, and it drove her mad? Would she ever be able to tell Toby? It was a long while before she gave up on sleep and wandered down stairs.

It just so happened that Maia was emerging mid-conversation.
"--u expect her to not notice?" Dari's voice echoed.
"No, no. I guess I just forgot." Toby, weaker than usual. Defeated. There was a brief silence.
"She's probably going to keep trying."
"I know. I'm not sick."
"You are sick, just not chicken-soup sick." Another pause.
"...I guess so. ... Yeah. Yeah, I guess so."
"Want me to talk to her?"
"Nah. I think I'd rather just..."
"...what?"
"I don't know."

So something was wrong. And soup wasn't the cure. Maia didn't want to interrupt so she waited at the middle step and sat until they finished talking so they wouldn't think she'd overheard. Then she went to the kitchen and got a glass of water.
What was Toby sick with? It must have been pretty bad. She sipped at her glass of water and entered the living room.
