Unless you are Autoranked, or are human, pretty much. There will be rare exceptions, however. If you have a damn good bio that supports your age, than sure. Such as my character, who was, at the time, spelunking near the center of the earth for diamonds (for his latest lover >.>) and thus wasn't even aware of the virus until he came back out.
Did the virus infect literally every entity in Soul Society, or just actual shinigami? Cause my character was a citizen in Rukongai at the time (or after wards, at least). If that would lead to his death, then you need to state specifically how long ago the virus ended, so people can create their character to accommodate that, not that it really matters. I'd say at least twenty years, to be honest.

@BJ: I asked Lan about that. He says its only been 5 years, hence almost everyone starts E-ranked. =O

@Aria: Lan also says that you can auto-rank Espada 1-3. :3

And no one has posted wanting espada positions.... no one is asking me questions... and only one hollow has posted somewhere that i can see. It may be a while before i try and autolevel someone.

@Aria: I figure that it will be a very, very long time before my hollow would even make it to that level, and I do plan to go to the very top of it all....but what do you mean by only one hollow that has posted somewhere that you can see? Of the few hollows we have here, I've managed to see the...both of them post. I must be missing something here, so I'll be waiting for my "here's your sign" moment once I figure it out...still, your words make me curious.
@Tao: 5 years since the virus died down/off, so then all characters are technically 5 years old?

Not all Shinigami died off from the virus, but if that's the case, then most shinigami would be five years old.
Quite frankly though, I highly doubt a majority of people would be playing five year old shinigami.

There's a list. I don't wanna track down all the hollows. What if one starts in karakura, or brazil, or in some random territory. i don't want to have to look through every area for each hollow. But the actual application thread which is made to reduce my clerical work load has not been touched.Telling me you want to be espada is fine and all. but if i have to look through 800 pages to find your first post, then i will be too bored, tired and or lazy to care about raising you, since raising you takes even more effort on my part. I have a couple "auto levels" where i can raise a character all the way to S rank on a whim. But i like to follow a character for a while before then to see if i like a person, and their roleplay style. An auto level makes you espada 2 or 3. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~` maybe the virus only effected people with a certain level of raitsu?

Heart, not all shinigami start as children. When others die, they arrive in Soul Society at the age they died out (could be wrong, though). If that is the case, very few people would be children, and more likely teens.
And 5 years would be the only one that makes sense. Say we make 20. Sure, for Shinigami it would make sense. But Hollows grow in power quickly to gillian class by eating others. In twenty years, there would be more powerful hollows, and that's what I'm trying to avoid.
5 years is the only number I could decide on that made sense. People can have character's of any age, as long as they realize that they only died 5 years ago at most.

Regardless of what makes sense, everyone still has to start as E-ranked. If they want to be older, they could just give an explanation as to why they're so old while only being E-Ranked.
Meh, I guess five years it is though. xD

Hollows don't start out with a hunger for other hollows. it takes them a while to aquire that taste, and it is usually only done after they eat the soul of the ones they swore to protect/get revenge against. Sometimes this takes a while to do.

Sometimes this takes a while to do. I am considering making a hollow but I dont think he can get auto ranked because my first character got auto ranked to S-rank.

can't you still advanced the old fashioned way though? Either way, i'm being stingy with my auto raises, so as to be as fair as possible. i hope....that is the intent anyways.

Only problem with that is there is so few people here as hollows to rp with that I wont get a chance to eat them, and me being the npc mod does not really help to damn much you know. That and I have never rp-ed as a base hollow before I have no idea what drives them.
