QueenoftheSea Does anyone have any advice on how to make my new wooden clarinet not sound so Flat? If it's brand-new, then it'll take a while to break it in (don't really break it!!! gonk ) I'd recommend oiling, cork greasing...basically performing maintenance every day for about a month. It also may be because it's winter and that does weird things to wooden clarinets. 3nodding Clarinet lesson went well...I'm playing Mozart for solo & ensemble, baby!! w00t! blaugh heart Too lazy to go and get it from my room to see the title...it's theme and variations on a concerto of some sort...*knows that doesn't help any to find out which Mozart it is*

mm, first day practice about ten minutes on it doing long tones...slowly extend the time you practice ^_^
COOL! MOZART <3 biggrin I think nits just his concerto...he has no other clarinet concerto...unless we're talking about the quintet i must say i like brahm's quintet more XD
isleboehhi-...if you're the best clarinetist...D: how come you can't use correct grammar nor spell clarinet right...?
so the concert was pretty good, surprisingly XD ^^;
I have to finish my hw! must get rhythms right for all southern music DDD:

The word you are looking for here is "barrel" cool Okay, so it's not the concerto sweatdrop It's "Theme and Variations: Fourth Movement from Quintet for Clarinet and Strings..." my bad. But I still heart it very much. 3nodding

QueenoftheSea Does anyone have any advice on how to make my new wooden clarinet not sound so Flat? Ahh...switching from plastic to wood eh? I did that early this May I too sounded flat for some time. and don't listen to this person, schatz_ich_liebe_dich also u could pull in out the.... piece right below the mouthpiece pulling out the barrel makes your instrument even more flat. Basically, what I suggest to you (since I have gone through this) Is to take your time getting used to the instrument. It takes practice to adjust your embrocure and air support to make the instrument have perfect tone. I do recommend also using bore oil once a month. Basically, dail maintenance as well. Hope this helps biggrin I did all of this when switching from plastic to wood and now I sound great! but when I play on a plastic clarinet and sound sharp XD so I have to pull out the barrel oh and FYI to that person who suggested the barrel, push in if you are too flat to become sharp, pull out if you are too sharp to become flat

Our private lesson studio had a "Clarinet Social" last night, which consists of everyone going over to Sensei's house, eating food, playing clarinet, and talking about how much we hate trumpets and Mr. Davis how band is going at our respective schools. It's a lot of fun and everyone gets something out of it. For instance, we learned that Sensei's brother is a really good cook. 3nodding blaugh

The way I see it, since most clarinetists start on plastic horns, they are naturally made to be a little sharper (since a younger player cannot pull the pitch on a horn up quite as quickly nor have the embouchure/air support to keep that pitch up). Therefore, just about anyone switching to a wooden horn for the first time is going to have that problem, at least initially. The best thing I can suggest, other than basic maintenance and slowly working the instrument in, is to experiment with different setups. New reeds (different brands or strengths: if you're not on V-12s yet I suggest them), different mouthpieces (a longer facing will produce a lower overall pitch), different ligatures, etc....You might even want to measure your barrel against the length of your previous barrel. My wooden barrel that came on my R-13 is a little longer than I was accustomed to, so I had that problem for a little bit. I noticed the same problem when I switched mouthpieces only to discover that the combination of my lengthened barrel AND lengthened mouthpiece were the culprits. It just takes lots of air support and embouchure control, and those things come with time and practice.
Best of luck to you!

Noooo! It's horrible! The pain! The agony! scream gonk
The cork on the lower joint just disintegrated gonk Actually, it didn't disintegrate, it just broke in a straight line all the way down and the glue appears to have evaporated...and I can't get ahold of my repairman...(you'd think since OU's school of music is one of the best we'd have instrument repairmen coming out our ears, but nooo... mad ) I bought a sheet of cork a few months back...let's see if I still have it and it's still good. I don't want to lose any school playing time to shop work! crying

Either that or you can get a cork from a wine bottle, cut it up into ze small square, super glue it then YAY! o_O; DD: my teacher never called back, I really needed a lesson this week, maybe its my fault because I called the day before XD;. Or he could just be mad about me getting him tea......... sweatdrop

Actually no, it's the band of cork that connects the lower joint to the bell...(I suck at describing specific parts on my clarinet; I'm used to them just being there and me going "OMG this must be fixed! *points frantically to problem area* ") But I've replaced it with some synthetic cork until I can find my cork sheets. I know they're here somewhere. mad
Patience, young Miyoko! Your teacher will get back to you in time. It's still the holidays; he could be out of town. My teacher's going to the Fiesta Bowl gonk My sister is too, except she's with the Pride of Oklahoma blaugh But it's so quiet in town now...it's like everyone that had the slightest chance of going to the Fiesta Bowl has gone.
At least, that's what I thought until I went on OU's campus, and holy fudge! People everywhere with bags of Tostitos chips! eek It was like gameday all over again. surprised
