"I wouldn't take it too personally," Zach laughed at Emma's reaction. "After all, he was a bit cracked... and he isn't exactly the most loving guy around."

"Hmm."

The former peasant girl held herself as if she had been a noble for five hundred years.

"In any case, if you wish me to remove the curse, you have but to ask."

"I'll be sure to keep that in mind," Zach nodded and decided to use the silence to drink a bit more sake.

There was a faint hissing as white mist began to pour from underneath the door of the tavern.

Emma rolled her eyes, standing and flinging a net of spellfire over the fog, which almost instantly solidified into a very surprised and bloodlust-driven vampire.

"Nice try."

Grey enjoyed the silence, closing his eyes and allowing his senses to reach out. He could feel the life force of every living creature within half of a kilometer. He sipped his coffee quietly... He coughed abruptly his coffee having gone down the wrong pipe. He stared at the vampire with glaring eyes. "Go figure."

Zach eyed the vampire on the floor with thinly veiled interest. He was always intrigued by the ability to become mist like that and wondered what it felt like to do so.

"Oh, hey there Doc," Zach turned when he heard Grey coughing. "How long have you been there?"

"You'll never kill me, witchling!" it snarled, trying to throw off the net of violet fire that pinned it to the floor.

Emma almost laughed. "Who said I intended to kill you?" There was a blur of black fabric and the vampire went limp.

Emma had just put the heel of her shoe through its chest.

Grey looked at Zach with eyes that showed great understanding. "Since the beginning of the Earthen evolutionary sequence, my young friend." He shook his head, wondering why he said that. "A few minutes. Sorry, wasn't quite myself there." His vision flashed for a few seconds and he rubbed his eyes, pained.

Emma withdrew her heel, disdain and contempt apparent in her features.

There was a neat puncture hole where she had stamped.

Grey looked at Emma once more with the understanding eyes. "Why do you despise the vampire, young elf?" This time, though, he didn't just shake it away. His hair color actually started to fade.

Young? Anybody that had the right to call her that must be ancient indeed.

"Aside from the fact that he tried to kill me? Nothing in particular."

Grey scratched his chin, and seemed shocked for a moment before understanding. "I must have had my memories shattered and they must now be reforming, because I was certain I had a beard last time I checked."

He returned his focus to Emma. "It is in his nature to be vicious, young elf. If they showed compassion at all times, then how would they stay alive? Now, if he was specifically targeting you then it is understandable to despise him. Do you think that that was the case?"

"Would you consider breaking into my estate in the middle of the night with at least ten companions specifically targeting?"

She paced around the body, keeping her eyes on Grey. Shadows darkened and seemed to elongate.

He smiled. "Well, then I would have to say that they were either ignorant or particularly vengeful." He sipped his coffee and stood up, examining his surroundings until his eyes caught the date on a newspaper. "So, it has been quite a few dozen years that I've been sleeping. A good nap, but a bit exhausting to awaken from."

He realized he hadn't introduced himself. "I am known by most as the Neutral Philosopher, but a few people simply call me Grey." He bowed down in a way that was more gentleman-like than Doctor Question could have ever done.

"A bit of both, I found." She knelt beside the fallen vampire's head, taking it in her hands and releasing a modicum of power.

"Lady Emma of Bainbridge, at your service. I don't believe we've ever spoken properly, but I get the sneaking suspicion you already know quite a bit about me."

The bow was much appreciated. Chivalry was a rarity in this day and age.
