"Don't worry, I know how this particular thing works..I've done it several times myself." Cringing lightly, talking even causing twinges of pain...that happened when you had a section of your face excised. He knew she was upset though....and frankly well...he was seeing some spot of light in this...then again he was crazy enough for such things. "I do appreciate the....gesture....however. It's for Zykariel after all..."

Yeah daddy didn't sound unhappy, thus he let his friend tug him off and upstairs to see his mother, whom was still in bed, though she wasn't really so much in reverie yet she looked like she was trying to.

Lateef's slight distress turned to horror as Malik laid out all his plans. He shook his head, clenching his fingers tightly on the edge of the table and downing the drink that was brought to him. "Ahkallyn is harmless and he is only looking out for what he still considers as his kingdom. Kieran doesn't let it bother him and neither should you." Stress balls drenched in blood? "Malik you are turning down a road that is not a good path to take. You are jeopardizing not only your family in Andal but the privelege you have of visiting our cherished plane." It was news to him that Mahlari and Malik were making deals though. "Items pass between our two planes constantly. That will not cause any suspicions to raise with the Brigade. If you have dealings with Mahlari, that is your own choice and if she chooses to send Khaiver, that too is between the two of you."

He rubbed his forehead for a moment, attempting to figure out a way to explain things to Malik. "It doesn't matter why or how long you were there. The only way anyone can gain entrance to Andal is through a sponsor. The sponsor is held responsible for what the guest does. At one time Andal was an open plane, allowing all who wished to come in, do so. Mostly it was elves and then one day we had a visitor. He looked like an elf though he was of a different sub-race, spoke like an elf, even acted like one. We welcomed him with open arms. It was the worst mistake we ever made. He showed little mercy. Even children fell to his sword. After that Andal became a closed plane and all who wished to gain admittance had to have a sponsor. The Brigade will not, in good faith, harm a guest. It goes against their policies and their procedures. Instead they take to task the one who sponsors the guest because they have jurisdiction with that sponsor. In your case, Kieran is the one who will pay. I caution you to proceed with extreme caution, Malik, because whatever you do cannot be taken back and you will cause fon will be ble than you are bargaining for. Piper will be cut off from her parents and Isle and your son will have his grandparents snatched from him. I don't think you want to explain to either of them that because of your hateful vendetta, they can no longer see their family."

"You would kill an innocent child!" He'd already alarmed Lateef when he mentioend using his status as Piper's husband, now he'd gone way past the line. "You would commit murder to appease your vengeance? Malik, you are playing with fire and as an ignorant child, you will be burnt. Andal has some very cruel laws, the Brigade's word is law. Each kingdom handles it's own. What Mahlari does within her kingdom is her business. If she isn't compromising the integrity of the plane, the Brigade stays out of it and you have no rights to question what she does either. I cannot in good faith allow you to go through with this." He went very quiet and then met his gaze directly. "There was a lot of stir when Kieran announced that you were to be coming. Many compared you to the unspeakable creature I mentioned before. Kieran stood up for you but now I'm beginning to question his judgment in doing so. If you would harm an innocent child because of crimes you hold against its mother, how can I in good faith, leave Piper here? Or your son? Would you slay your son because Piper betrayed you?" Lateef was half afraid to hear his answer.

"Dont' say that! By the gods Sevilin why can't you just hurry up and hate me and be done with it?! Don't thank me prettily and tell me it's okay and don't pat me on the gods be damned head and tell me that I'm a good puppy because I did what I was told!" Angry tears pricked at her eyes and she shook her head. "Leave Zykariel out of this since this has nothing to do with him. I did this to you. I did. I took this dagger and removed that piece of your flesh and I delivered it to your enemy. See your blood? I drew it! Now stop being passive and just do whatever it is that you're going to do!" She threw the bloody dagger at his feet and backed up until she hit the wall, then sank down to her knees, covering her face to hide the sobs that were racking her body.

Zykariel blinked at Piper laying there and shook his head. She didn't look too good but hsi mother had said she'd be fine. "Mommy said she'd been hurt real bad and even health takes some time work. She'll be okay Malikhai." He climbed up into the D'vinn's bed and lightly began to pet through her hair. "And soon she'll be picking you up and hugging you and reading stories and giving us steel for Keeley.

He crawled up on the bed as well, settling down next to his mother and his friend. "Mommy's was having bad memories earlier I think...she didn't look happy..." This was not fun...mommy was supposed to come back and everything was supposed to be like normal again.

Caprice had watched the two boys toddling into the room. Aw, they looked so upset too...and she knew that was Malik and Piper's room. Leaving her own room, she wandered into the other, watching the boys crowded around Piper who well...looked like hell. "Are you boys being good little elves by watching over Piper?"

He blinked, watching her...of course she wanted him to be mad at her...obviously he knew this wasn't acceptable behavior, you didn't go around hacking up people's faces, it wasn't appreciated. Getting himself up, he picked up the dagger, and placed it on the nearby side table before walking over to her and kneeling down in front of her, taking her head in her hands and forcing her to look up at him. "Tell me...what do I hate most about myself?"
PostPosted: Thu Apr 19, 2007 8:16 pm

"you leave Piper and my son out of this!"

Malik stood up, his chair forcibly thrown back from him.

"You haven't seen what I've seen, and you surely don't know what I know! I will not let someone that threatens my house to be able to throw around weight without any recourse or fear of it because of the damned Brigade and thier ignorant, foolish, outdated and outmoded ways of thinking!"

he leaned forward on the table, nails digging into the wood some.

"So would you love to tell me exactly how then, am I to make sure that Khavier holds his word? hmm!? what promise am I going to have that Sevilin's would be tormentors and family won't come trapeezing over to this plane because her thrice damned chaindog and her sister have the exact location to my home!? Care to answer me how the Brigade thinks that they can lay claim to Sevilin who has forsaken that plane, while I am supposed to sit idly by and unable to do anything for my own safety or to protect my son and my wife from Mahlari's dogs of war? oh heavens forbid that, because while SHE can send anyone and anything here without fear of the brigade, I can do nothing in return because Kieran pays the cost for HER actions on me!"

Narrowing his eyes lightly.

"Her unborn child, if it is killed will be done so because she will bring it upon herself. I have told them already, that those in my house do not abide by Llothian or Cafellian or any of those theocratic trappings. and I have instructed him to abide by our faith, and to do his job with the upmost ability. which means when she enivitably tries to put boots to him for something beyond his control, like an interrogation that gets an answer she doesn't like, he is going to respond in kind. I only speculate that his reaction will be to hit her where it will hurt most, and for a pregnant woman, that is the unborn child."

his nails left traces in the wood, and he stood himself up crossing his arms lightly.

"My father acted that way. so confident, so sure because of the master leash on his hand. that he could do to those under him as he would, because he need not fear their reproach. and that is exactly how Mahlari is treating me. she knows, or at least is sure, that no matter what whom she sends or does, that she is beyond my grasp. I can't touch her, without risking Kieran. and my father was butchered by a creature that you met already. recall the winged feline at our wedding, the male?"

"He slaughtered thirteen families for the crimes of my father. left me a patchwork quilt of an elf, until death restored my flesh to what it should have been. if you push a caged animal it may cower...push it enough and it will bite back. right now I am stuck in a corner, because I right now have to abide and deal with Mahlari lest I risk Khavier being sent to do things I won't even think of, or risk the Inthra household trying to reclaim Sevilin. yet I cannot send her any message, I cannot threaten or demand anything, because she can simply ignore me. I have no weight to throw around, and why? because your Innoruuk's cauldron be damned Brigade. I can't touch her so you say without Kieran being harmed for it, and she knows that I won't have Kieran hurt or imprisoned anymore than I would want my wife to be. they are family to me."

his voice was getting angry again, frustrated.

"So you be oh so kind and tell me how exactly I am to make sure my home is free from Mahlari or the Inthras, without risking Kieran and without breaking any Brigade rules, and I'd be more than happy to accomadate. I can't simply shut down the gateway, I need it to keep my kingdom and Piper happy with things only a surface can provide, such as various foods and wood of standards and strength simply not found here. You claim I can't have Mahlari injured or assaulted because Kieran suffers even through a middle person. I can't go there myself either and deal with it because Kieran suffers and I get my family banned from the plane. So I'm open to suggestions. and don't give me that let sleeping dogs lie garbage. that woman needs to be brought down a peg or two for general purposes and to show her that she cannot trifle with me without fear of a response. I will not be blackmailed into bargains by that woman and I won't be looking over my shoulder for Khavier or the Inthras for the rest of my days either."

Lateef's eyebrow rose as Malik went violent. Just more and more irrevocable truth that he was capable of many things. He did not flinch at Malik's tone nor did he react in kind. Instead he merely sat there and listened. "You have no right to raise a hand against Mahlari for anything she does to Kieran. Rest assured she has been dealt with regarding that incident and it was not lightly as you seem to assume. The Brigade is serious about keeping peace and they will not hesitate to exact the penance on anyone, even a royal. They are not above the law the way many royals are." He leaned back in his chair and unfolded his hands laying them flat on the table. "If you feel that Sevilin has been unjustly accused, take it to Tyrrael. Present your case and see if you can get him exonorated. At the very least, it's worth a try. I don't profess to be an expert on the matters of the Brigade, but I do know that they operate on a principle of fairness to all. They do not merely execute and ask questions later."

He looked thoughtful for a moment. "You spoke as though you wanted to affect Andal directly, Malik and that is the meaning I took from your words. Hear me well, if you do anything to Mahlari on Andal, Kieran will suffer. Anyone who comes to this plane no longer is protected by Andal. If Mahlari herself comes here and begins to ransack your home, you have every right to slay her where she stands. Same with the Intharas and Khaiver. The Brigade cannot interfere in such things unless a special circumstance is wrought. For example, Khaiver is here to finish this deal you have going with Mahlari, yes? If he does nothing to you, you can do nothing to him. The moment he raises a hand against your house, you may defend yourself, even if it means killing him. If Mahlari raises hell about it, again, appeal to the Brigade Master. Provide the undeniable proof that you were provoked and all will be settled that way."

"But the same goes for you. If your necromancer causes problems and gives Mahlari just reason to slay him, she is in her rights as well. She too can provide the Brigade Master the proof required and there will be no further investigation. The ways of the Brigade are neither antiquated or outmoded, nor are they ignorant. The Brigade exists to keep peace on the plane and prevent anyone from rising to too much power. Even Mahlari is held under the same standards. She has already been taken to task many times, she will not push Tyrrael." He swiped a hand over his face. "Have I calmed your concerns?"

She swiped the backs of her hands under her eyes and stared at him for a long while. Slowly understanding dawned and she lifted a hand to his unmarred cheek. "Your beautiful looks," she whispered. "That doesn't make it okay, Sevilin. Please don't tell me that makes it okay..."

Zykariel glanced up at Caprice and nodded. "She needs someone to watch her and make sure she doesn't get up and hurt herself more. Mommy will probably give her more health pretty soon too."
PostPosted: Thu Apr 19, 2007 9:05 pm

Yes one could say that he was taking this all too lightly but in reality...well he had shut down. Turned to that place and that facade of his that protected him both from joy or grief over things. "I'm not going to tell you that that makes it okay. Sweetheart. Because it doesn't and I'm in a severe amount of pain right now and of course knowing how it's done, I know this isn't something that's going to go away over night to...but I don't have time to feel sorry for myself. I never have."

Standing up, he pulled her up with him, merely pulling her into a hug to soothe her. No he never cared about himself, it was always about her and Zykariel...he was pretty sure his arm would be falling off and he wouldn't care at the moment if something was wrong with one of them. "And...I can see where you're coming from...and that does make it okay in a respect. You're a healer, you know how a body works...I have no doubt you took some care in it. Khaiver would of made sure I would barely be able to make an expression again I'm sure." Tilting her head up so she looked at him again. She could probably see through him though, how he was more or less not reacting to what was going on with himself. "But did you honestly have to bash me over the head with my own weapon?"

Walking over to the bed, she brushed a hand through Piper's hair and took to motion of making the woman more comfortable in the bed, rearranging pillows and such, pulling covers up...poor thing. Then attention to both boy's resting a hand on each's shoulders. "You're very good guards, do you know that? Some of the best guards I've seen in a while."

He smiled lightly under praise, it was nice. "We're gonna do our best. Can't let anything happen to mommy, or daddy would be sad again and I would be sad too. Daddy gets mean when mommy isn't around." A look to his friend and he giggled lightly. "Mommy doesn't like health."

A sigh, and running his hands through his hair.

"your brigade's standards of taking someone to task and mine are most assuredly on opposite ends of the spectrum. in Norrath if anyone had dared strike a royal, they'd be dead where they stood. period. Drow are used to pain and uncomfort, even the highest ranking ones. putting Mahlari in a cell won't phase her as long as her sister isn't sitting next to her. if you want to chastize a drow and make it stick, you do it with force."

a slight smirk though.

"You think I didn't plan for him to not come back? which is precisely why I sent whom I sent. he's disobeyed me on several occasions with his experiments, and could have gotten me into a very real war with Deepwater and the Purians. fortunately it worked in my favor in that instance, so he didn't die for it. but I don't forget, and I'll let him reap his own rewards."

"As to sevilin, there's nothing to exonerate. I know he did those things, and I know he was probably well within his rights to do it. half of the killings smack remarkably of some arrogant or foolish youth venturing into a place they should know better than to. and Kieran...those two have been at it for years. never once have they seriously injured each other, and only once did they even come close and I prevented that. my complaint with that was that it's a damn laundry list. it's at least two or three pages. yet not once has sevilin been brought to task or heel for it. which to me, shows that someone was waiting until the crimes got to an execution point before bothering."

picking his chair back up and settling down in it.

"what I want is simple. I want her to fear me enough that she won't bother me. even if it's more of a 'I won't touch that because it's more trouble than it's worth and bites'. I tried to do that with my end of this deal. apparently making her cowtail to you and getting her and her sister's blood didn't dent her. having Khavier sent back in pieces might, but he won't be so stupid as to provoke me save through his veiled blackmail threats."

settling his arms on the table with his hands folded together.

"Sevilin doesn't live in this fortress. he has his own place, though it is still on my lands, it isn't exactly close. which is the reason for my slight paranoia with the Inthra household. if they come for him, there's very little I can do to help him before he's subdued or captured. in my world, the solution is simply destroy the Inthra house, or break it at least. make them more concerned about themselves then me. again, this is an option I don't have. and I don't exactly even in the least like the idea of having to essentially beg the brigade master for help, like a child trying to get his parents to make his sister stop pestering him."

yep malik was in overprotection mode. still concerned with piper, now having to worry about Khavier and Mahlari and the Inthra house and trying to make sure that Sevilin stayed on his plane in his service.

"and now I have vials of blood that won't be useful in my plans. I was hoping the method of usage woudl be enough to throw off any scents. and I only picked the elder silvercrest because he'd have the most reason to use them. though I bet Lord Soultide might too with that Fluffy fish and that woman of his constantly changing emotional states."

though...hmm..idea. save that for later. might prove useful.

"But I think that's all the buisness to discuss. you're supposed to be on vacation, and I don't want Caprice trying to beat me with her knew harp for having you work too much."
PostPosted: Fri Apr 20, 2007 3:05 pm

"Mahlari fears far more than you might think Malik. In many cases she is inviting her own destruction by not allowing her own rune mages to achieve Master status, and she well knows it. Tyrrael does not play with her and does not allow her to play with the others either. He would probably be horrified that she'd been given papers regarding anything. I still tell you to plead your case before him. He's not an unreasonable man and many things pass through the lower legions that are never approved by him. Mahlari could make up anything, present 'evidence' and get the Brigade to write something up regarding it. Generally though Tyrrael approves these papers, in these situations but things don't always go according to plan."

He frowned for a moment and blinked, "How can you know how Mahlari is affected by one of your gestures? I would have thought her being a plane away, you wouldn't know such things. Ah well..." A shake of his head and he leaned back in his chair once again. "I would stay on the safe side and leave such devices here in Labyrinth, Malik. Have I quieted your fears now?"

Zahara blinked up at him, flinching at her nickname coming out of his mouth after everything she'd been through and everything she'd done. "Yes, I was afraid he would completely destroy your face and I...I couldn't let that happen. I couldn't let him do it since he would have done so much more and you already haven't moved past your history with him." She saw him withdrawing, couldn't read his eyes, which scared her and she shook her head. "Sevilin...don't pull away from me just now." It took her a moment to let his question sink in and her lips twitched so slighlty it was almost imperceptible. She did give him a grateful look. "It seemed like a good idea at the time?"

He too beamed at praise. It was nice to receive it from another adult besides his parents or Mr. Malik and Miss Piper. He turned his gaze to Malikhai's mother and then back to his friend. "No one does. If that was all Mommy could do I think lots of people would run when they saw her coming."

"there's no way for her not to be affected. the runic cirlces I was going to have on those balls is very, very dangerous. commonly used to torture someone to the point of breaking them. so I'm sure she'd know whom was responsible, but she'd have no way to prove it other than it's effects. and with me and sevilin not on the plane, it would leave your brigade to chase shadows over it. no one else that knows it would use it."

A shrug.

"drow know drow. I know that she sent Khavier for the exact purpose of throwing Sevilin's world into disarray, and because Khavier can't be provoked so easily if I push. she knows by the fact that I brokered a deal that Khavier's papers worked to get my concern. and that my counter offer was in the manner of trying to make a deal too hard on her for her to go through with. But we'll see about this brigade leader. myself and Piper have been dicussing taking Malikhai to Andal during winter to visit with Kieran and Fianna. perhaps I'll take this up with them then, and give me ample time to catalog other events that may happen."

but getting himself up, and gesturing out of the room.

"Would you like to try some of the Underdark's food yet? I think you'll find it a lot more enjoyable than you make guess. in fact, many foods here are quite similar to the surface. some are the same type but meaner and larger."
PostPosted: Fri Apr 20, 2007 3:26 pm

Sevilin shrugged lightly. "He probably would just for his giggles." But he only gave a light sigh though perhaps almost a surprised look...he wasn't big on facial expressions right now...at her statement. Than again she was good at reading him, almost too good at times. Well what was he suppsoed to say to that? Lie or make an excuse? Probably not the best options...he'd just continue to deal with it and gave her a nod to the statement. Did feel a bit better when he picked up on that slight mood change of hers. "Next time, use something heavier...I'll stay out longer. Then you won't have to yell at me."

"That's because it tastes horrible, or usually gives you a worse feeling before it starts to make things better." Piper shifted in the bed, giving a wince as she did so...oh she felt horrible. Now that she wasn't on a constant go, it was like she turned into a rock over night. So very very sore still...rather excruciating really...she figured she was feeling it now because she was calm, all the adrenaline and urgency was gone...aw, horrible.

He giggled about health, but then gave a happy surprised look and sound, turning slightly to his mother to give her a big smile. After all, it was a good thing to see her...somewhat alert. Though she still looked bad even to his childish opinion. "But we gotta do it, right?"

Caprice chuckled at the little drow's comment, weren't these two just darling? "Oh I think your mother could catch them if they tried to run, don't you? A good healer never lets someone inured out of thier sight without good reason." Turning her attention over to Piper, reaching over and brushing red and silver strands from her face. "Yes, you always said that. Feeling better than you look?"

Lateef was beginning to think he'd never put Malik's fears to rest and so it seemed that that was the case. "I wouldn't mess with Mahlari under any circumstances Malik. Leave it alone and just deal with Tyrrael when the time comes. A clean record is a great boon in those times and since he will see you personally, it would be to your benefit to have no suspicions roaming about the plane regarding you." He shook his head at the food question. "No thank you. I'm just not brave enough to try anything yet and my stomach really wishes to handle nothing. I'm going to go check on Piper and then Caprice and I were thinking of exploring for a bit." He quirked an eyebrow. "If that's alright with you?"

Her gaze scanned over his face once again and she dropped her eyes. Things were a long way from being over or even settled but right now it was all too fresh. She actually gave a chuckle this time though. "I'll keep that in mind next time you piss me off." She reached out and grabbed him by the arm for a moment to keep him from going anywhere since it seemed the conversation was done. "This was an isolated event. It wasn't a vendetta against men, my hatred expressed, or even because you upset me in some way and I'm using Khaiver's demand as an excuse. I didn't want to do it Sevilin...I need you to believe that."

He nodded. "She's a real fast runner, though not as fast as Daddy, and she'd never let anyone who needed health get away or hide. She caught me when my tummy yelled at me." He did turn to Piper and gave her a grin as well. "Yeah but Mommy always says that what doesn't kill you only makes you stronger. And health doesn't kill you."
PostPosted: Fri Apr 20, 2007 4:41 pm

"My concerns are put to a rest for now, Lateef. I can read that in your eyes, questioning it. as for exploration, I wouldn't object to it. just be sure to be armed. I can supply weapons if needed. I'm not entirely sure all of Sevilin's runics are at top notch with magic being the way it is right now, so better safe than sorry."

though a slight grin at the food thing.

"you just need some more acclimation time. Isle was the same way for a bit. if your exploration was refering to the fortress, I would suggest not going to the lowest areas of the basement, and not to the back area of the arena without myself or one of the breakers. everyplace else is fair game unaccompanied."

He blinked at her again, obviously this was really bothering her...then again tears had told him that much and he wasn't dense...well, not that dense. He could be sometimes. But Sevilin merely raised a hand and rested it on her shoulder in comfortable manner. "I know you didn't. You can't stand it when I don't eat or bleed through facial orifices...and despite how you may have a certain hate for the male species...you're above petty revenge..." Quiet for a moment, before quirking an eyebrow. "Got anymore of that nasty tasting stuff?"

"That's true Zykariel, very true." Taking a moment to try to sit herself up...which was being very unsuccessful at. Stiff and her body was absolutely protesting against her. Like she had ignored every form of abuse it had endured during her little quest, only to have it all realized and crashing down on her now.

He frowned as he watched his mother struggling to do simple things. That did not make him a happy little elf...and if he knew mommy, she never stayed down for long...she always was up doing something or other. "Zahara said you need your rest mommy."

Caprice sighed and shook her head in that motherly manner, before helping Piper up, but did push her back against the propped pillows after that. "And Zahara is right about that." Granted she didn't know Zahara too well...Lateef did more than her. "You need to eat too. I wouldn't try to do anything if I were you...you're a wreck. Though I must say, your hair does look nice long like that." Giving a chuckle to that one.

"Weapons would probably be appreciated. I have a dagger that I don't use very often. Generally I rely on the weather to get me out of trouble I happen to fall in but I don't think I have that option down here." He nodded to Malik and then left to find his wife. Knocking on Piper's door, he pushed it open and glanced in. "Oh good, you're in bed resting. Caprice, can I see you for a minute or are you the only thing keeping her down?"

She really needed him to understand that little piece of information above all. They had come so far and she knew she'd jeopardized everything they had to this point. He apparently didn't take it wrong at all which she thought was a blessing. "I always have it." Reaching into her pocket, she removed the vial and handed it to him. "Take the whole thing and it will slowly numb the pain. I'll keep giving it to you every few hours but you need to eat as well. Nothing solid, just a milkshake or soup." She turned to head towards the kitchen to cook before looking back. "Sevilin, I want to be engaged." And then she headed for the kitchen.

Piper was not supposed to move, that's what Mommy had said and Zykariel was right there with Malikhai trying to keep her down. "Mommy said not to let you move. No matter what. I don't think you even get to go to the bathroom without her permission." Though he gave her a smile. "Do you want some water?"

Piper gave a cough, after all, Zahara may of come in with a dose of magic forn healing, but that didn't mean it was snap your fingers all fixed. She still had fluid down in her lungs and such. And there was that painful achey feeling that she would probably kill a man if it would make it stop. "Aren't I popular..." Turning her attention to the boys, giving them a smile. "You know, some water sounds grand right about now. And I'll behave and rest like Zahara told me to." But oh wanted to move so bad. Encourage them to help out, it was good for them. But a look up to Caprice and Lateef. "Oh no, I feel as bad as I look. But I'll be fine...the boys are watching me."

Hey! He was like daddy now! He said something and then mommy actually listened and didn't do anything silly! Add another point to the emulation of Malik scale that he was almost constantly trying to push higher. Thus a grin from him. Though an odd look to his friend. "What if she has to go really really bad and your mommy isn't here to say she can?"

Caprice considered the answer a moment before she brushed Piper's band from her face again then got herself up and followed Lateef out of the room. "She's in good hands. Now what's wrong with you? You don't feel too entirely thrilled. And you need to eat something too. Do I honestly have to tell that to everyone around here?"

Yes that's right, he was admitting to being in pain, even if he wasn't showing it, and thus was willing to take whatever nasty thing she made that he had to take to make pain go away...because this was not one of those pains he was used to. Taking the vial, he uncapped it and downed it, shoving the glass tube into his pocket. "Right...because talking is difficult and painful enough, I'm sure eating would be hell." Though he was left there standing stupidly and blinking like an idiot at her last comment. Another blink and then he followed her into the kitchen. "What was that?"
