Toby shrugged. "I'm no sure. GPS and... imaging or something." He took the phone back and tucked it away again. It was on silent. Nobody could possibly need him at this time of night for anything more important than this. "I don't know. Knowing the constellations definitely adds something."
Dari looked over toward Toby. He was waxing poetic, lingering in memories. Hopefully he wouldn't fall any deeper.
"But you're right. They're beautiful as-is." Toby shifted and cocked an arm under his head.

"Constellations?" Maia considered that. Those were those things that people made up. The pictures in sky. "We could make our own constellations." she decided. It seemed more fun than just looking. And it'd be fun with just them knowing. "Those stars look kind of like a heart," she pointed out the shape. "What do you see, Toby?"

Toby personally had issues seeing stars as anything but starts. The big dipper, sure. Orion's belt, yeah. Anything else? It was random gobbledygook. He tried his hardest either way and began to connect stars randomly in his head. Nothing. He turned back to his app, pressed a few buttons, and held it up in front of Maia.
"Find them. We can mark our own."

Maia wasn't sure how to control the app, so gave Toby a puzzled expression before finding the heart on the computer screen. "How?" She asked. "Oooh. I see a fish!" She looked to Dari. "What about you?"

"Like this." He touched a couple of stars to connect them, stopped it, then deleted what he had done and handed it over.
"A fish?" Dari asked, "Where? I don't... shapes are so..." He pointed. "I can see a seal."

Maia took the phone and connected the stars for her two constellations, then offered it to Dari. "You found a seal?" she asked, impressed. "I want to see. Where?"

Dar connected a great number of stars himself, more than lay in the average constellation. Toby just watched from over Maia.
"That's a big one," he commented.
"You can find anything in the stars if you look hard enough." There might be an all-encompassing constellation for all humanity knew. The stars they saw here were different than those on his home planet.

"It's the best," Maia beamed at Dari. "I like it best of all the constellations we've found." Best out of three; but it was a seal, and that made it automatic best of all. "Do you want to try finding one, Toby?" she asked. "It doesn't have to be a real one. It's like connect the dots. But you're making your own shape."

Dari smiled and handed the phone over Maia to Toby. Toby took it and looked through the screen for shapes.
"Oh, look. I made a star." He showed the other two. Dari chuckled. Toby had created a slightly lopsided five-pointed shape. A star, sure, so far as Ursa Minor was a bear.
It would be the next week when things started to get strange. Toby was unaware that he had been caught with his only bedtime buddy these days, so that certainly wasn't the reason. He hadn't slept well. He hadn't slept much at all, and he'd given up trying earlier than he usually woke up. When Maia arose, she would find him cooking an elaborate breakfast far too large for just two people and just one morning.

Maia woke early, and when she wandered down the stairs, found Toby in the kitchen. She blinked. Was she dreaming? Toby usually liked to get at least another hour's sleep. What was he doing? Were they having guests over this morning, and he simply had forgotten to tell her? "If you'd woke me, I would've helped," she said, coming to stand beside him. "What're you making? Are we having a party?"
Maybe she ought to get dressed, then. If Lorien or Annie were coming, it'd be awkward to be caught in her night gown.

"Hm?" Toby asked at first, as if nothing had made sense, and then came up with a response. "No, I'm fine," he said and offered Maia a smile. The comment on a party struck him as particularly odd until it began to sink in. He looked over the abundance of food he'd prepared and realized it was too much for just the two of them. He hadn't realized. He'd just started cooking.
"Oh, uh. I thought we'd leave a little early and bring some in for Lori and them." It was a lie, but it'd be the best way to get rid of this food anyway. Some would be better the second day. Other things needed to be eaten today as they wouldn't warm back up well at all. At least he'd only just started on eggs.

Maia of course, thought the gesture was incredibly sweet. It was awfully nice of Toby to offer to prepare breakfast for his friends. She beamed at him. "I'm sure Lori would like that," She said. Toby's cooking was better than the stuff at the cafeteria anyway. "Can I help?" she asked. Maybe she would be able to give something to Seamus; but even if Toby refused, it'd be nice to help make something for their friends.
Was Dari up yet? She poked her head out of the kitchen and looked for him.

"Oh, I should probably stop, honestly." That much was true. Potatoes and biscuits and sausage and bacon... really, he should. "We can bring some to Seamus, and Lori. Maybe Kelly or Annie too." They certainly had enough.
Dari was awake, lounging for now on the couch, painted already but with bare head and glowing eyes exposed. He had been through this before, several times now. It was best to just let it happen than to try and make Toby confront his emotions.

Maia nodded. Probably. They had enough food to share with a number of people. "Alright. But next time, I'm helping," she said. "I'll take Lori's and Seamus' to them in research if you like." She took a step back, gave Toby a hug from behind, and wandered out of the kitchen.
"Dari, there you are. Good morning!"

"Sure, that'd be good." Better than him showing up with the shameful evidence of his own annual emotional breakdown. He wiped his hands on a paper towel and turned to Maia.
"How do you want your eggs?"
Dari smiled and waved to Maia. She obviously had no idea, but that was probably for the best. The charade could only last so long, though. Sooner or later Toby was going to run out of distractions.
