Hugin the Raven "Hn?"
He turned towards the young-looking woman and smiled. How she knew his name was anyone's guess, but... wait. Those ears. Blue eyes, same smile... but as he superimposed the image that was fresh in his mind with this one, two things were different.
"You cut your hair- that beautiful hair of yours. And what's with the black color?"
He said all this with a fond smile as he sat at her table.
Nedyfay Darkchild. Gods, how long has it been? Nedyfay Darkchild indeed - but her body was fuller, healthier, than it had been when he had seen her last, her eyes had life in them again, and she was smiling because she meant it and not just because it was expected of her."My hair is naturally black, and the hair had to go off - split ends and all that. It will grow out again, promise!" she laughed and leaned over the table to pick her trade mark bag off the chair opposite her so that he could take a seat. Leaning back she closed her book and pushed it away from her a little bit, before taping a small sip of her drink."Surprised to see me? Do have a seat, by the way."

Evan sat and took a good look at Nedy. She looked so... much... better. In fact, she looked as if something had truly changed in the past few... what, months? Years, maybe? He remembered her being a tortured soul- someone who ate little, slept less, and was apathetic to the point where she was looking for a place to die. But now... he awnsered her with a voice that was filled with no small trace of wonder.
"Damn, Neds... you look beautiful. I almost didn't recognize you. What's happened?"
And what else are you hiding from me, besides your hair color?

And what else are you hiding from me, besides your hair color? While he was looking at her, she looked back with a level expression, her eyes expressing curiousness as well as a gentle humour. His reaction pleased her, too - it had taken determination and work to get out of the hole she had dug for herself, but she had managed, not just physically but also mentally. The happiness she had once thought was not meant for her was now held like a small, warm gem in her heart somewhere, and nothing would take it away from her. This happiness was her own; not a happiness that other people were responsible for."Thanks, Evan, you aren't looking too bad yourself. As for what happened, well, it was this or dying."

Evan nodded. "I figured you'd be able to fight your way out of whatever it was that perpetually haunted you. It's why I tried so hard to help, back when you were down. Then again, I don't suppose you needed it after all."
He smiled. This was good- maybe the world wasn't all going to the depths of oblivion after all. His mood had improved vastly since he had entered town. And she said he didn't look too bad himself. If nothing else, that was good to know, and nice to hear.
"I hope you don't mind my asking where you've been and such. If it's too sensitive, you don't have to awnser... but I'm just curious what you've been up to."

"Out and about, really, just doing a lot of things. Serving tables, for example. Sold my flat in Barton and lived at a youth hostel for nearly a year. Read a lot, saw a lot of movies, tried to make each day the best one I had ever had."
Her musical voice held a quiet pride at what she had done. While telling him what she had done she gesticulated a a little, obviously feeling more secure about herself and thus daring to relax. When the last words passed her lips she idly pushed a lock of stray hair away from her face. When her hand came down in hung in front of her for a moment before her jaw set and she lifted the other hand, janking the black gloves off, exposing the skin of her fingers. Her hands had several small scars, but none of them all that horrible, in fact they were hardly visible; she had come to understand that it was only she who saw them as clearly as black splashes on a white background. Putting the gloves on the table she breathed out through her black, wet nose. There were still some things she needed to work on.
"How about yourself, then?" she asked, because she genuinely wanted to know. When she had been about she had often wondered how things were going; she could follow Winter's process easily enough, as the girl was now a gothic fashion model, and wrote letters on a regular basis, but as for others she was completely in the dark.

He nodded and smiled. She had been working- keeping herself busy. He figured there were other things beside the things explained, but he respectfully did not ask. He sighed to himself as she took off her gloves, seeing the scars that she bore, but thinking nothing of them. She had improved, and by leaps and bounds. How many scars she had did not matter anymore.
"Oh, I've been doing quite a bit. My business in Durem has gotten quite fruitful as of late. Of course, I can't begin to explain how many things are going on at the moment, but suffice it to say that things are good for me these days. Not to mention that I've enjoyed seeing Winter's success. Her face is everywhere these days- I'm glad for her."
Not to mention that he missed her something awful every time he saw her face. But that's beside the point.

"I have heard of your business! You must be a very, very well-off young man by now. I'm very glad for you, although you must be very busy. Remember to take care of yourself."
The last part bore a silent warning; she was still a mothering person, and if she even had reasons to suspect he was not taking proper care of himself she would intervene and follow on his heels until he got the message.
Nedy's face flushed when he mentioned Winter's success as a model; she was very proud of her daughter. The girl had grown up considerably, and she did not think seeing her own transformation was the only thing that would surprise Evan.
"Yes, Wint is doing very well. She is taking a break this month though, simply kicking back. Has a nice apartment in Durem, actually..."
Her eyes searched his face when she said this, trying to judge if it was safe for her to reveal that Winter also had started dating and even had one or two steady boyfriends. Those relationships were long past though.

Evan quirked an eyebrow. So she was still in Durem? He wasn't watching her anymore. He didn't have to- she was all right on her own. But he figured that she would have moved somewhere else than the city by now- somewhere where there was room to breathe.
But she was still in what was practicly his back yard... His skin darkened slightly as he asked the next question, though his voice sounded quite steady.
"I trust she's been seeing someone? I certainly hope she's happy."
It was all he had wanted for her, after all... well, not everything, but most of it.

Ah, he did seem to blush a little there. Nedy would not have noticed it if she had not been watching his face, but there it was. He still cared for her daughter, but she was not sure in which way. That he cared was the most important thing.
"Not anymore, no," the vixen replied casually and sipped her drink, licking her lips behind her hand after she put the glass down to remove the fringe of white on her upper lip.

His eyes widened again. Not anymore? He fought back a wide grin. He had to keep himself contained- celebration would come later. For now, he simply sat there, content with the fact that she was free. After a bit of contemplation, which he was totally faking, he decided to grow a bit bold.
"You wouldn't happen to have her number... would you? I mean, it's been a long time, after all."

"You wouldn't happen to have her number... would you? I mean, it's been a long time, after all." "As a matter of fact," Nedy began with a smile and reached for her bag, looking through in and producing a pen, a thin pack of yellow Post-Its, and a refillable diary, "I do." The addresses were all the way in the back. She found Winter's, just to make sure she did not give Evan the wrong information, and wrote down Winter's home address and mobile phone number with elegant handwriting on the top of the yellow pieces of paper. When done she pulled it off and handed it to Evan, letting him read through it while she packed down the things she had taken out of the bag."Give her a call."

With everything in him, he fought not to spring out of the chair, drive home, and call the one girl that he had been looking for all this time. But he said nothing- did nothing. Simply nodded, smiled, and put the post-it in his right pocket. He'd have to enter the contact information into his cellphone for later...
In fact, while it was on his mind, he did. Adress and everything. He then gave the post-it back to Nedy with a smile.
"Don't worry- it's not leaving me anytime soon now. In any event, what's that you're taking a drink of? Looks good."

"Hot chocolate, with whipped cream. Want one?" the woman replied cheerfully, taking the Post-It and crumbled it in her hand, placing it on her book so that she would remember to throw it away later. Evan kept himself under pretty remarkable control, but she had seen him light up. If she was not very mistaken, it would not be long before he and Winter got back in touch again. It would be good to see that happen.

"Certainly. I'd love one."
He wondered if he should ask where she lived as well... but decided that he would re-connect to his friends and contacts one person at a time. For now, he simply asked for her number as well, just as an emergency contact. If this was any indication, they might be seeing a bit of each other, and he wanted to have her number in hand just in case something happened.
"I might need your number as well, just in case something happens. May I?"

Nedyfay leaned left sideways and got eye contact with one of the waitresses, pointing to her cup and then to Evan. The waitress, a girl of merely sixteen, nodded and set to heating the milk and whipping the cream straight away. With a smile of thanks Nedy then straightened, turning her full attention to Evan again, only catching the last part of his phrase. Tilting her head, she smiled sheepishly.
"Afraid I didn't catch that - what did you say?"
