I have no understanding on how we came to this convorsation but...
A play off of "I think therefor I am", never heard of it before, but my interpretation is that, if you shop, your investing in western culture, for some reason I just forgot, not sure if im gonna be able to retain it now...s**t...

The discussion chain went...

Tau aesthetics > Tau morale > Human morale > Propaganda and Media in real life.
biggrin

Basically, "I shop therefore I am" was a phrase slapped across shops all over supermarkets and departmesnt stores in post war baby-boom era America.
If you buy something expensive, then you feel expensive, you are worth more, you are expensive. Expensive is good, it shows wealth and class. If you buy low brand then you are poor, you and not worthy.
It's the staple of the American economy and redefined marketing.

So, as a middle-class housewife in 1960's America, would you want to have something that says "I am rich, I am fabulous, envy me" or "I am poor."

Exactly.

Tau would be affected by "For the greater good". It doesn't just say "For the greater good." It says you are a part of a whole. We are advancing. We are great. You are a small cog in the magnificent machine. You are going to fight and do well and it will make your comrades and your superiors proud.

It's not in the text, it's in the meaning behind it.

yeah, theres always another meaning behind everything that seems to be af few simple words.

But this system will not last forever, like america did, and China, and Russia, everyone started not caring, and went lazy. Ethereals might hold it together though, if they were not the leaders then it would end pretty fast

From another angle, he broke free of being told what to do, and now lives the American life. The "free life with liberties."

The american life is a big house with a white picket fence, sitting by the pool eatting cheetohs, I doubt he as all that going for him. He probably took on like 4 waaaghs at the same time and got himself killed

I read that last year in the beginning of the year in literature. 3nodding It is in most literature books these days. I think it is simply called "The Necklace". 3nodding
You are from Michigan aren't you?

As for Farsight: I definatly agree. I love him just for doing what he is doing! xd He is just like America during the Revolutionary War! xd heart
I am actually planning on making a variant of him pretty soon out of a few actual GW pieces cut to fit on a Forgeworld commander. 3nodding
It will be pretty sweet in the end. biggrin

nope, Im pretty sure that a picture in my barracks isnt gonna raise my confidence

And I'm pretty sure you've never been in a battle (not that many of us have, although 40k does draw in more than its fair share of military folks), or even a competitive sport into which you were emotional invested, else you would understand the power of "simple" words and imagery on the morale of an individual and even moreso a team.

That's why I compared it to the thing everyone feels and experiences. Value and self worth. The keeping up with the Jones' dillema.

I think morale is one of the most important factors in a battle.
I play paintball in a forest type field, so when you encounter a large group of opponents, you feel a bit helpless when your numbers begin to dwindle. 3nodding
I love it when I am putting up a last stand in a fortified area. You sit there, being shot at from nearly every direction by over a dozen opponents gets the adrenaline going REALLY fast and when you see reinforcements coming in from the side from a recent insertion, you regain that sense of hope and fight even harder when you know that you have a chance of winning.
Also, if you are crazy enough (like me) you will fight as if you are actually going to die right then and there.
"Fight for your honor, your lives, and for your people!!!!"
I always loved leading my men into battle, guns blazing in a blind fury, and running the other team into the ground as they cower under the endless stream of paint heading towards their faces! twisted
I feel like an Ethereal pushing my men onward to victory, but I don't have nearly as many downsides to falling in battle as an Ethereal does. rolleyes

I think Farsight realised that it was necessary to expand on the Tau dogma to retake what was lost and expand the Empire.

He may well have gone off on his own with his own loyalists because the Tau heirarchy would never accept what he planned to do. That's the thing. his actions became legend, and pushed the Ethereals out of the light as the true leaders, so they got jealous and called him heretic etc, and employed someone they could control easier instead.

Perhaps.

It's all speculation really.

He didnt expand the empire, he went out on his own, for his own gain, not the emperors
