These lands were not altogether familiar, and a loss for direction became an increasing hazard as the sun dipped below visibility. It was only in the wake of desperation and panic did the survival instinct seem to fully kick in. While one may not be able to scrounge up knowledge that was not already locked in memory, there was a vast supply of tools at their disposal; one only needed to look at things in a different light.
After quick deliberation, half-expecting the experiment to fail, he snapped a small branch off the fallen carcass of a rotted log, and proceeded to intentionally snag the far end in the silk trappings of a spider web. The fireflies were few and far between, but he didn't have to rely on just a single pair of eyes, either.
Leading the small group back home by the eerie glow of the ensnared insects took little effort. It seemed only natural to take the stealthy route home after a day of battle practice, to flex both the physical and mental muscles when training.

There was a Totoma dark in color. His heart, however, was as light and warm as the sky color that pulsed across the dark blue void of his fur and danced in the shine of his front hooves. His carefree attitude was not widely accepted by his clan. This Totoma was often chided for being impractical and emotional. His eyes were wide, though, and his heart open to the wonders of the world around him.
As he was coming of age, he had great love for a female with fur as pure as snow. This Totoma became his steadfast companion; he told her of his hopes and dreams, his fears, and his triumphs. They sat for hours talking about their future naming ceremonies and what they would want out of life. She basked in his affections and employed him for her whims. He after a time asked her to be his mate, as was a custom in their clan once a suitable partner has been selected. He was met with rebuke; the snowy white Totoma had long promised herself to another. She scoffed at the idea and laughed at the thought of being with one with so sentimental. "You are only like a brother to me." An icy sheen overtook the male's heart. To have been used so cruelly by the one in all the world whom he had given his best self had crushed his spirit and zeal for life. All the lovelorn male could see was a world painted over by his anger and pain.
Thereby a duel at dawn. The three met on a cliffside; the female watched as the two males clashed with horns and hooves. The dark Totoma was weaker and smaller, no match for the gallant suitor. He was left to tend to his wounds while the couple celebrated.
Rage. Shame. Inadequacy. Heartbreak. Failure. It would have been enough to incite violence in even stronger hearts. There may have even been a flash thought of suicide had not pride in an icy heart turned thoughts darker. With every ounce the young buck could muster he rammed into the winner's side, throwing his foe from the cliff. The female lunged to catch him and slid as well but could only watch as the body bounced from rock to rock to land limply on the ground below. The female struggled to find her footing and pull herself up; however, she continued slipping down toward her lover.
The male, dark as night with eyes as cold, looked down at her. She returned his gaze, desperate for his help, her eyes pleading for mercy. She did not want to die. She did not even have a name yet. As the Totoma walked away, he snorted, "I will give you no honor."
