Well, for a "hang out thread", there sure are some serious discussions going on. xd

Hmm. You're right.

Well, I went to this mandatory meeting for college. The entire thing was teaching us how to read the books they gave us.

I mean, come on. We made it to college. I think we know how to read and look at indexes. Maybe that's just me, maybe I'm the only one who thinks that people who make it to college know how to read, but seriously, there was no point. Unless of course you don't know how to read, in which case, it would have been quite informative.

Yeah... You'd think... I think that it's supposed to be teaching kids that slacked in High School (Guilty. sweatdrop ) how to do things they should have learned how to do in High School, like proper studying skills and stuff.

But I'm still doing well without ever having gone to one of those things. whee

Ooh, other off-topic thing!

Since my roommate disappears to goodness-knows-where (Like, he left sometime last night), I watched the first disk of Azumanga Daioh (His DVD, which is why I waited until he wasn't here. sweatdrop ). I don't think I've laughed so much in a long time. It's great. Makes me sad that I know there's only so much of it. sad

I think I cried when it ended. I loved it xd

The college stuff wasn't studying. Seriously, the whole thing was teaching us how to read the course catalogue.

Ugh so today was quite tramatic.

My younger sister has the habit of going out and getting drunk on the weekends, which is all teenagey and stuff and I tend to cover for her. But last night she had 2 of her friends over and said that her boyfriend had been drunk as well.

Normally I wouldn't care but her boyfriend had been driving them. So at that point my older sister censors kicked in, so the next morning I called my mother and told her and went upstairs and talked to my Dad. I felt bad about getting Leigha's friends in trouble, but I thought that it was a serious safety issue and decided that I'd rather have them alive and mad at me then dead and happy that I didn't tell.

So Leigha's friends were okay but Leigha was uber pissed and was denying that Scott had been drinking, yadayada. Scott came over and denied that he had been drinking, the whole shabang.

I felt kinda bad because I felt like a rat, but at the same time I knew it had to be done. So right before Leigha went to bed I went in and talked to her and told her that I didn't tell because she'd been drinking, I told because she said that there had been drunk driving and that if I ever think she's putting herself in danger I won't cover for her. And I also told her that if I know she's drunk I'm not going to tell on her but that she should watch how much she drinks because alcoholism runs in both sides of our family and where her brain is still developing she's a high risk of getting it.

It went over well and she said that she understood and she wasn't mad and she's just mad at one of her friends who tried to blame it all on her and her other friend.

Anyway she and I are good now and life is back to, fairly, normal. So horrah!

Wow, that sucks. I'm glad she didn't stay mad at you, kinda ticked that one of her friends pulled an Adam.

When I was talking to her she told me that she wasn't mad at ME and that she hadn't been mad at me. She was just mad that she had gotten into trouble, but she knew that she had gotten herself into trouble so she didn't have a reason to be mad at me, and she understood the reasons that I went to my parents.

It's good that Leigha and I have a good relationship, it makes things like this easier.

You're a good older sister.

Whereas with me, I get ratted on for having a good time, and then my parents get at me.

I mean, god. I wish you were MY older sister. My brother would relish the chance to rat me out.

Why is abortion illegal during the third trimester? I'm just curious as to why this isn't considered robbing a woman of her right to privacy. It's just as invasive as regulating first and second trimester abortions, isn't it?

Because at this point in time the fetus is viable and if given birth to rather than aborted it would live.

I'm all for induced pregnancy in the third trimester (ie if a woman doesn't want to be pregnant she still has the right to have it removed because of privacy, bodily integrity, and such), but I am staunchly against abortion this late in the pregnancy because the fetus is able to be born and survive on it's own (further by this point in time brain functions are not questionable, the ability is indubitably there). There's no need to kill it then remove it when you could just remove it (unlike first and second term abortions where removing it DOES kill it or lead to death and not live birth).

I guess one way to look at it is this: If you don't want to be pregnant in the first trimester you can remove the fetus through abortion or induced miscarriage which leads to death of the fetus in all instances. It simply isn't viable. If you don't to be pregnant in the third trimester you can remove the fetus via abortion or early-induced birth which leads to death in the first instance, and survival in the second. Since the fetus is able to sustain it's own life, and meets the criteria for being a legal person (or so I'd argue) to intentionally kill it when you could have saved it would be gross neglect.

If artifical wombs were created, I'd be all for making them a legislated alternative to abortion, just as now I'd be all for permitting women to induce birth early. The right to have bodily integrity and privacy protected... the right to have a fetus removed from your body would still exist... it's just a matter of what to do with it afterwards.

Of course, the question of personhood and what grants a fetus rights is still debateable for those who would debate it (ie 3rd trimester fetus has them, 1st and 2nd does not, and so even then artificial wombs would not be as demanded or necessitated as say, induced birth).

But it isn't a person, legally. Why is it protected? And why exactly are fetii killed before being removed during the abortion process? Wouldn't it make more sense to just remove them, since that way technically all you're doing is keeping the woman's bodily integrity and you're not directly killing any human?

That's what I've always wondered; I mean, Pro-Choicers are always saying, "I don't want to let it stay in my body," but if that were the case, why don't they just take it out? Why do they have to kill it first? Sure, they'll die afterwards, but the aim of the abortion isn't supposed to be the death of the fetus, that's supposedly just a "side effect," so why is it that the procedure specifically and deeply involves the death of the fetus?

On more hangout-y matters... whee I finished Azumanga Daioh half an hour ago, and it is amazing. I'm gonna have to buy it for myself. As soon as I have money. crying
