Sorry for bringing this up, but I missed it yesterday and wanted to respond to this. My intention isn't to stir anything up, I promise.

Chaoscarrier
My first NFS experience showed me rather clearly that NFS, in a lot of ways, is much closer to a game than an RP. Like using writing and math as a medium to replace the coding and years of software development. Hm. I'm having trouble describing it, but basically: If you neglect the 'game' by electing to write for fun and not keep up in levels, you can very easily become the bystander who winds up forced to watch everyone else have fun because your stats won't allow you to have any kind of impact or ability to set the pace.

You're absolutely right. NFS is more of a game than an RP. That's part of the allure. If we wanted to just simply RP, why bother having a system? We'd just go and type whatever we wanted, learn whatever jutsu we wanted regardless of whether it made sense or not, start out at any rank we wanted as long as it wasn't already taken.

I've been in those kind of Naruto RPs before. They're not pretty, because it's too easy. When you let anyone be anything, even with rules, utter chaos ensues. You start seeing Uchiha with shadow control. You start seeing things like the Byakingan, which is just a combination of the Byakugan and Sharingan. Or even worse, you start seeing things like eyes that can control time, immediate descendants of Kaguya who have laid dormant for hundreds of years, or other ridiculously overpowered crap.

NFS has always had more allure because of the grind. Your character only becomes powerful if you are devoted to making them powerful. You won't see Plot-no-jutsu turning an academy student into a Sage Mode Kage overnight with the system.

But yes, that means that anyone who just wants to use it as an outlet for creative writing will fall by the wayside. The system rewards effort. The more you put into the game, the more you get out of it.

Chaoscarrier
"Multiplayer". Lol

Yes, multiplayer. Everyone has the equal opportunity to level as far as the system is concerned. But even without the system in place, you can still go to other countries and RP with people. Raven, Vash, Karasu, and I all RP'd in my Shippuden guild, and that's with Raven and Inuvash being from a different country. Being lower level doesn't prevent you from interacting with everyone. Same for being higher level.

Chaoscarrier
But with events like the Chunin Exams that bring people from everywhere together, it becomes the most important aspect, cause if you're not producing the check necessary to create the setting, you're left to watch everyone else create it.

You're correct about the group RP being the most important of the aspects, but it's not the only important one. To some people, their goal is to become a Chuunin. In NFS1, I never left Genin. I never became a Kage. I was only in the Akatsuki because no one else wanted to join. And that was because everyone else was putting out more lines than I was. But I don't feel that because I was left in the dust, the system should be changed in any way to bridge the gap. If anything, it's given me the drive to get there first so that the same thing doesn't happen to me. But it requires time and effort and a lot of typing.

Chaoscarrier
Chunin Exams was probably a better example too cause the less capable of competing you are, the sooner the festivities of that event end for you.

Well, that's what happens if you join the Chuunin Exams without being able to compete. I remember the one and only time I joined the Exams. Worst mistake I made, because it gave Wolf an opportunity to kill my Nara only a couple of days after he and I had been in an OOC argument. But the point there is: The Chuunin Exams are a system event first, RP event second as far as I see it.

I'm not entirely sure what it was you were getting at with what read to me as your commentary on the state of the guild, but if you came back with the intention of being a contender, as you said, then by all means contend.

Woo! The Yomi Clan looks like it is actually garnering a couple votes. ^-^

If it ends up going through to the finals, I would be happy to help people out with backstory questions and stuff, too. If there were any questions about abilities or past events or things. I know the backstory isn't huge in the submission. ^-^

I'm well aware of the shenanigans that happen in other guilds. I moderated for a One Piece guild with over 100 active players at one time. There were constant problems daily because what we really needed was just a sort of 'guidelines' system to mold the idea of what our point values were like when scaling compared to RPical representation, but the owner was literally scared to death that even doing something like that might kill the guild. Ironically, sort of like how NFSv2Redux overwhelms most new players with the sheer amount of learning to be had.

The funny thing though is, you're not actually 100% accurate in the idea that people can't do crazy stuff here in NFS. You could make most any of that stuff you listed RPically very easily with nothing, but a dual bloodline and cheesy/creative writing. It's all RPical. The part of NFS that's nice is no matter how weird the RP side of things gets, the system is always the defining measure of our strength. In that way, the RP doesn't lend anyone unfair advantages. Same for Sage Jutsus and other crazy forms. They can mold custom jutsu and stories any way they want, but if they can't back it up with the stats it won't do much

Kaguya Benjiro
But even without the system in place, you can still go to other countries and RP with people

Can we though? In RP guilds the concept was much more open, but here it's always been "RPical justification (stealth, etc) or automatically get NPC screwed by the other country."

But I don't feel that because I was left in the dust, the system should be changed in any way to bridge the gap. If anything, it's given me the drive to get there first

Well, I mean.. that's gonna be different in one way or another for everyone. You exemplify that your own commitment wasn't enough to 'make a difference'. My experience was dampered heavily because I was tossed into a situation where I wasn't allowed to do anything. Like a friend bringing you over to play games and then you're forced to sit there and watch them play something the whole time. I keep up because it's the only way to creative write and still be in those events.

Kaguya Benjiro
Well, that's what happens if you join the Chuunin Exams without being able to compete.

This is true, but the fact remains that if you elect not to participate, you also forfeit all the group exp and event bonuses. So, if you were struggling to keep up, choosing to actually RP without being forcibly swept into something set, you're more or less acknowledging you'll never have a presence and forfeiting that experience would bury you from competing entirely.

My only experience with the Chuunin exams was solid. I had been so bulky, as one of few really active players at the time, that I stormed my way in, almost goof'd up the first stage on a whim, and then cremated my prelim, 1st round, and semi final round opponents. For people in the lower side of things, they fumbled so hard off of just their low stats that they automatically lost the first part of the event and got poisoned. Then when they were pitted against each other, they ran out of resources long before the battle could have any proper conclusion. After that they missed the next 3 rounds of the event. The strong got way stronger and they wallowed in a pit of "I had to do this for exp, ..but why? I'm still miserably behind and I sacrificed my personal story for this."

Kaguya Benjiro
if you came back with the intention of being a contender, as you said, then by all means contend.

I came back with the intention of contending, so that I could creatively write freely without being under the player bases boots.

That moment when we get so excited we miss the clear stopping signs and fall off the deep end.

This is absolutely adorable. I'd learn the tricks of cosplay costume creation to make memorable events like this happen if I could be a dad.

Awesome! I am super stoked that I actually get to create the actual clan around this character. Thanks a bunch for voting guys. ^-^

Hope to see some really interesting characters built around it, and again, I will be around to help with backstory ideas, and would love to plot with anyone who takes it, to make interwoven stories and such. =]
